      Frog's Theme and Magus' Theme are just so good, and showcase their character so well. Frog's is knightly and heroic while Magus' can stand as a boss battle theme or just show his power. There's so many others that are too good, but those 2 always stand out to me.

    • @briansmith8898
      @briansmith8898 2 роки тому +3

      I think it's that amazing soundtrack that really makes the game, IMO. Chrono Trigger has some interesting ideas, and a well written story, but that's hardly unique. The sprite work is wonderful, but there are other titles with great sprite work and animations. But it is the amazing soundtrack that ties everything together into a cohesive whole. Every emotional beat is accompanied by a corresponding change in the soundtrack. They also used different styles for the different time periods, and every one is a banger. Each theme could carry a game on its own, but the collections is truly special. The end theme, To Far Away Times, is one of my favorite pieces of instrumental music from any source.

    Chrono Trigger and Star Ocean: the Second Story--two absolute MASTERPIECES from an era where game creation was truly an art. I've done a lot of research into the limitations and tribulations of creating 16-bit games--everything from sprites to RAM allocation, layering, bit-level masking and music creation and--holy crap. That they could make Chrono Trigger during the SNES period is nothing short of a marvel.

    I actually thought that the "Lavos inside of Lavos" boss idea was pretty genius. Just like how you discover who the real enemy is in the future, Lavos's true form as a space-faring advanced alien (as opposed to the dinosaur-like shell) is pretty amazing. And what's more is that the true heart is one of the pods you fight, not even the humanoid being in the middle. It makes it some obtuse and cool. I remember my first fight against Lavos and upon it being revealed that I had to progress inside of the shell I was literally mind-blown.

    • @CivilChev
      @CivilChev 8 років тому +30

      Plus if you have Lucca in your party when Lavos reveals his "final form" (C'mon, this IS Toriyama after all. xD) she mentions how he's adapted to a humanoid like form by gathering DNA from the entire planet and using it to birth Lavos Spawns, to send them to different planets to repeat the cycle.
      The "Parasite" Lavos is only the protective shell that harbors the true Lavos inside, always learning and adapting to new things.

      For me, the most mesmerizing thing about Lavos was the idea of Lavos. This final character was at least a decade ahead of its time. He wasn't just the stereotypical evil monster. They touched on some really heavy shit with this one...the forest scene in Lucca's side story where everyone's talking about fate and what/who put them on this journey? Their realization before the final battle about what they're actually fighting? They weren't making bad guys like this in the 90's

      Black, Blue, White, Silver, Gold. Black and blue are the only triple techs Magus gets. Silver, white, and gold are extra triple techs for non-Crono combos of the original six members.
      One you get in Zeal, one in the black omen, one from a nu in the village ruins in the far past, one from having Frog catch a stone throne at the party in the mountains in the middle ages.
      I can't recall the location of the fifth stone at the moment. Maybe in the island dungeon in the middle ages where you got the rainbow shell?
      The black stone is dark eternal, a group-hitting shadow tech with Magus, Lucca, and Marle.
      The blue stone is Omega Flare, a group-hitting shadow tech with Magus, Lucca, and Robo.
      Let's see... white is the poyozo dance with the ladies... silver is spin strike... Ayla is in that one.
      The gold is Frog...
      Eh. that's all I got for 2:20AM.

Though, if they ever decide to, I just wish they ignore Chrono Cross ever existed, like Radical Dreamers. Is is weird how Square managed to, even back then, forget what made CT so great. All those useless characters that had next to no motivation to go with you and were, ultimately, redundant, and took focus away from the actually important characters, the weird "infinite reality" that looked more like an excuse to screw up with the Chrono Trigger ending, the unsatisfying "true" ending, the weird battle system where everyone and, literally, their mother can use mostly the same magic whereas magic was a central plot item in CT and the convoluted story that had no impact unless you know CT (and most of the impact is F*CK, they did that to that character?!).... I could go on.... The music, though, is awesome. Maybe even better than CT, which is a tough thing to achieve.

There is too much for me to say in a comment but one thing i will target is that this game, to me has the greatest soundtrack Ive ever heard in a game. Its all about the graphics, if you need to make lots of HD models, stages and shit and properly lip sync them with equally good voice acting which is probably from many takes, people make smaller stories which is sad and usually these short stories have no replayability. Anyway the graphics are just an excuse, game devs need to work less on a game with nothing but good graphics and more time into making something that you could actually have fun with for multiple playthroughs, which was something more important in the past too :(.

      +Tetra Helix It's not about the graphics at all. Graphics actually are pretty important to a game's overall tone and immersion, as well as visual communication and literally everything you see on screen. Don't put the blame on graphics when they play an important role, when you probably should be putting the blame on the fact that developers only make games as a cashgrab. They make the games so short because they have so little time to make them, so many of them are made to be played pretty much once at $60 for the weekend, so you can still feel like paying $60 for the new game next month.

    Here's a big tip if you aren't sure if you are ready to face lavos or not. You know Spekkio right? Go see him at the end of time, he teaches you and every character except Robo, Magus, and Ayla Magic. U find him behind Gaspar the old man, the door he tells you about, there lies Spekkio, the self proclaimed Master of War. See Spekkio is a Nu. Those round Smiley green haired things? Ya, turns out each one of them is STRONGER than Lavos! Spekkio isn't the master of war, he is just the last remaining Nu, so I guess he's not wrong then. He says that if he looks weak to you it's because you are weak. And if he looks strong to you it's because you are strong. Regardless, if you beat him on any of his stages then you are ready for Lavos because Spekkio will NOT take it easy on you. He will absolutely destroy you if you aren't skilled enough. He changes his form as you grow stronger, at first he's one of these little sheep looking monsters. But his final form is said to be a pink Nu. With me, in my new game plus, I'm in my lvl 80's and he looks like a big blue muscle bound demon thing. Keep in mind I got to my 80's on my first playthrough and although even if your monster (ds version only) resets, Spekkio's form does not because your level does not reset. So tldr, focus on defeating Spekkio, if you can't beat him, probably don't go fight Lavos. Best thing is that there are no penalties for losing to Spekkio. It's all just practice, as he puts it.

    You forgot to mention this game's amazing soundtrack. One of the best soundtracks ever made for a game IMO. Yasunori Mitsuda is a genius. If you enjoy Chrono Trigger music, I have been remaking the entire OST with real instrument samples to make it sound like a modern game soundtrack. Check out my stuff, you won't be disappointed.

    The trial in the game actually has another layer that is only revealed in the side quests.
    The Chancellor is actually being impersonated by Yakra's descendant. And because you messed with the timeline, you actually helped Glenn defeat Yakra in 600 AD. Yakra XIII's goal was to get back at the crown, but he just happened to sentence you to death for "kidnapping Nadia" along the way.
    And on an unrelated note, the Lavos that kills Crono in the story is actually much stronger than the end game version. If you do beat him, you have to fight the last two forms right then and there. Normally, you can teleport to the End of Time from inside Lavo's shell, but not in this case. However, if you finish off the Lavos Core, you get the same ending as if you beat him at the very start of the game, the "Dream Project" ending where you meet the creators.

    Why does Chrono Trigger need another sequel? Let me ask this:
    Do you really want it? Or do you just want more Chrono Trigger? Here's the problem with both answers you could give; it will never be the same. The creators of the original won't make a sequel because it could never be as good as the original.

      Super Nintendo games' soundtrack as a whole was the pinacle of the genre. I don't remember having that kind of atmosphere conveyed through music in any game from further generations (maybe except for Sonic Mania but that one doesn't count for obvious reasons). Chrono Trigger soundtrack particularly is like a proof that God exists
