Gaudete - Steeleye Span (Live, 1989)

- Gaudete is a sacred Christmas carol, thought to have been composed in the 16th century. It was published in "Piae Cantiones", a collection of Finnish/Swedish sacred songs published in 1581. No music is given for the verses, but the standard tune comes from older liturgical books.
The Latin text is a typical medieval song of praise, which follows the standard pattern for the time - a uniform series of four-line stanzas, each preceded by a two-line refrain (in the early English carol this was known as the burden). Carols could be on any subject, but typically they were about the Virgin Mary, the Saints or Yuletide themes.
Steeleye Span released the song on their 1972 album "Below the Salt", and it became a hit single in 1973 (No. 14, UK singles chart). Guitarist Bob Johnson had heard the song when he attended a folk-carol service with his father-in-law in Cambridge, and brought it to the attention of the rest of the band. This performance was part of their 20th anniversary concert in 1989 at the Beck Theatre in London. There is a version already uploaded to UA-cam, but this one was better quality.
Maddy Prior: vocals
Bob Johnson: vocals, electric guitar
Peter Knight: vocals, violin
Tim Harries: bass, keyboards, vocals
Liam Genockey: drums, percussion
Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete
Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete
Tempus adest gratiae, hoc quod optabamus
Carmina laetitiae devote redamus
Deus homo factus est natura mirante
Mundus renovatus est a Christo regnante
Ezechielis porta clausa per transitur
Unde lux est orta salus invenitur
Ergo nostra cantio psallat iam in lustro
Benedicat domino salus regi nostro
Her voice is mind blowing. I'm happy to know there are other people out there that feel this kind of music deep in their bones!
Me too
I have heard dozens of versions of Gaudete...no one compares to Steeleye Span and to Maddy's pure and crystal clear voice.....simply the best, folks
Been a fan of Steeleye Span for almost 50 years now. I will never get tired of listening to Maddy Prior voice.
Anybody who complains that she sings Latin with an English accent is being a f***ing snob.
Anything that's worse that's worse than singing Latin with an English accent, is not being able to sing it at all.
We sang it with a Dublin accent in school! Lol.
Maddy Prior is a goddess with the voice of an angel. Beautiful.
That was gorgeous. I'm a bit late coming round to listening to Steeleye Span!! I was born in 75. Better late than never!!
She is! I nice heard them at a lunchtime concert at a music shop in Melbourne and they chatted with customers. And there I was, face to face with this glorious singer who was also nice and I went all Fangirl and couldn’t talk...🙁
@@greatraven1 what year was that? (I might have been there, too!) I certainly went to Melbourne for a few concerts with Steeleye Span and I vaguely remember a lunchtime one.
@@28102650 sorry, Andrew, can’t remember, but the lunchtime event was at Basement Discs, which does this sort of thing often, though not often with the likes of Steeleye Span. Does that sound familiar?
It wouldn't be Christmas without this wonderful song ...
that girl sings like an angel, nuff said.
I LOVE this song - lively rhythm, harmonies that strum the ear
How many other bands can sing a song in Latin and get away with it? Brilliant!
Gaudete actually is sung by not so few bands. And some of them even know how to pronounce Latin. (Sorry to say, the voices here are truly great, but those "gau-day-tays" and "vir-gee-nays" really do hurt my ears. I can't help it.)
Listen to this, it'll blow your socks off
It's just glorious isn't it?
Almost as good as Gary Wilmott's wedding.
@@bulletproofblouse straight away you’ve got em by the jaffers
Crap I forgot to listen
kommen sie bitte und listen to Kraftwerk
Simply beautiful
Great song to listen to on the way to a cracking owl sanctuary
I’m producing pellets
nice
But you must be wearing your string-back driving gloves...
Beautiful - my Christmas song!
Never realised how sublime this is until I played it on a good sound system in a large Church.
So beautiful....it just brings tears....
Beautiful, love this.
Heard this firsy in their 1970s Dublin concert. Unreal, aethereal singing. This is a gorgeous version too.
So beautiful, long live Steeleye Span!
wonderful, her voice and tone is so pure
The ultimate professionals!
I’ve sung this, also a capella, and it’s not easy to maintain concentration on pitch and rhythm and timing. And when the audience begins cheering when they realise that one of their favourite songs is being sung, there’s an extra special bit of concentration needed for them to listen closely to each other. Watch the facial expression change slightly, and then the smile, and finally the shift in stance. All done very quickly but I’m sure done as part of the concentration process.
What a classic ❤️ incredible singing. Spine chilling
how can anyone not love this?
Language scholars have been known to cringe at the dreadful Latin pronunciation. I don't mind it, though, because the song comes from a time when people still spoke Latin as a matter of course, so it makes perfect sense to me that it would have been spoken with regional accents.
My current obsession! Love the Latin. Her voice is so pure! Uk
Still the best version.
Makes my skin crawl. In a good way! : )
Amazing key, range and Xmae love. I'm a E8 and N4 Gal and this beautiful song calms me down when I miss my beautiful sensitive muscular Polish builder fiancee! Uk 🇬🇧

Rap Quuen too rich. Eastenders lovebirds love this winter classic. Adorable. Uk 🇬🇧
I came here looking for new material for my repertoire. I had forgotten just how beautifully they perform this song all those decades ago. I doubt very much this will make it into the list because it is just too hard for an old fart like me. Never mind, I can dream can't I?
I remember the original.........1976/78 ??
MERCI ✊🏼🎼🌺🙏🏻🇨🇭🇫🇷⚔️🛡
I have know idea what Liam Genockey said or did to Maddy at 2-10 but at least she managed to finish the song
Excellent and Thanks for this video!

You should all listen to their performance of "The Weaver and the Factory Maid" from the same concert:

Also, in case anyone's interested, I uploaded several virtually unheard Jean Ritchie recordings from the 1940s, which I made into this playlist:

Latin is a great way to discuss business when about' in the undereducated & underinformed Uk.
I don’t know if its funny or tragic 🎭 that this song is more famous for an Alan Partridge association
I love this song and I love the Alan Partridge element as well.😄

Latin speech sounds so much better than german, when sung by british artists. A perfect song! Still a wonderful voice from Mary.
Wonderful
