This channel is a supplement to my main channel: The Folk Revival Project (find in the "Channels" tab above). It will mostly consist of short videos, usually a single song, accompanied by information about the song and singer.
Justus Begley - Lady Margaret and Sweet William (Child 74) [recorded 1937]
This is a recording from 1937 of an Appalachian man named Justus S. Begley (1881-1956) performing a traditional folk song called “Lady Margaret and Sweet William (Child 74, Roud 253) to the song collectors Alan and Elizabeth Lomax. Begley lived in Hazard, Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains, where he ran for sheriff the year this recording was made.
The song is a traditional English ballad which was probably passed down in the oral traditional from Begley’s English forebears.
See the left hand side of the video for information about the song and singer.
Begley taught the song to the Ritchie family. Here is a link to Jean Ritchie's version: ua-cam.com/video/ua0QuXO4wgE/v-deo.html

This is a recording from 1955 of the Scottish singer Belle Stewart (1906-1997) singing a traditional folk song called “The Blackbird” (Roud 387), which was popular throughout the British Isles, particularly in traveller communities. Belle Stewart, a Scottish traveller, would probably have learnt the song in her youth from family members. This version of the song inspired a popular recording mad...

This is a traditional version of the popular song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" sung by the English traditional singers Bob and Ron Copper of the renowned Copper family of folk singers, and recorded in 1952 by the folklorist Peter Kennedy. Cam ye o'er frae France - Steeleye Span (Live, 1989)
I stil love Steeleye Span
For me the fiddler is the star musician.
67 comments only? WTF is wrong with the world! The woman and her backup are GOAT!
Crazy great!
I remember her coming down off the stage in the Apollo Glasgow , many years ago, and step dancing up and down the aisle - pure dead brilliant
Lovely rendition. Of course it was 35 years ago!
Great musicians!!! And in my humble opinion, this is the best song they ever did!
Maddie Prior is the sexiest woman ive ever laid eyes on!
ye cannae whack Maddy Prior step dancing to this tune
Wow what a amazing voice
just listened [again] to Steeleye Span Official Bootleg CD, needed a fix so listened and watched here again GO MADDY ye canny whack it
perfection
It don't get much better than this.👌
Sounds great and love her voice 2024
Great version of this!
just had my weekly fix, is there really anything better than this music and dancing ?
The days is long and lonesome The nights are getting cold I’m going to see my true love Before I get too old Oh get around Jenny get around Oh get around I say Oh get around Jenny get around Long summer day Met a possum in the road Mad as he could be Quiled his tail, whooped my dog And bristled up at me Oh get around Jenny get around Oh get around I say Oh get around Jenny get around Long summer day.
Wasn't that the drummer who worked with Gerry Rafferty?
Yes. Liam Genockey
I LOVE this song - lively rhythm, harmonies that strum the ear
Seems funny to see Swarbs with a clean chin ha! Love ya Swarbs, never forgottenX
Maddy Prior step dancing across the stage, pure dead brilliant
Absolutely Enchanting!
Quite some performance.
Remarkable. I have sung R Vaughan William's setting
WhatsApp elle?❤
All those people sitting clapping politely. We'd have been dancing in the aisles.
Uplifting music - makes me feel very happy 😊
And my soul
The best folk rock group ever & no one sang like Maddie! She's the sexiest woman ive ever seen!
How things have changed with audiences - they’d all be up on their feet joining Maddie in the jig if it were this year.
Ah Bless Maddy, wonderful xx
Simply beautiful
Beautiful, love this.
Beautiful - my Christmas song!
What a melody. Just like the rest of the Suite, it doesn't leave my head. Which I'm more than happy with.
Parcel of Rogues...
Wonderful
Brilliant mixture of clog dance and gaelic dancing. Same with singing, barely understood a word but the music is wonderful. Proves how we must keep regional music going or it will all be pasteurised and bland.
It's about George I and his foibles. Also, Jacobite (Catholic) objections to scores of heirs passed over for a protestant. The lyrics are hilarious.
Keep repeating myself, love Maddies voice. But watch her hands! To me it looks like she is using shuttles on the looms. Fitting in with song.
I love Steely Dan
Mady Prior a great voice.
really wonderful
The fourth verse goes like this: I leaned my back up against a young Oak Thinking that he was a trusty tree At first he bended and then he broke And so did my false love to me We have the same song over here. (Ireland) Though there's slight differences to the tune.
I knew that version from Pete Seeger first
Lang lebe das Haus Hannover! Long live the House of Hanover!
Maddies voice is brilliant! Long live regional accents! Traditional music. I'm from top end of Nottinghamshire but sound more like South Yorkshire. Lets not all end up sounding like BBC!
they just make it look so damn easy.
Gosh, that was fun! Saw them twice back in the day (Ottawa)- brilliant. Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada.
Tears....eyes....hairs on back of neck.
The arrangement of the song is truly a masterpiece..!! Thanks for the post.
Fantastisk stemme❤
And she and I'd keep our shuttles in play
