Great stuff - as a fan of S.S. since he mid 70's. I briefly met Rick and Maddy in the mid 90's when we were part of a performance benefit concert at the Albert Hall. More of a moment for me, rather than them, I'm thinking..
Marvellous! Oh to be able to go back to the 70's and see that line up again! Saw them several times at Sheffield City Hall and going to see them again on 8th November in Doncaster. 👌
It was great to watch this video. Unfortunately for whatever reason Steeleye Span has always performed this song live at a faster tempo than the album version and neglect to include the gritty lead guitar strums. The album version has a real dark feeling to it. By all means this is a good watch, but to hear the best you need to hear the album version.
I have never seen them live. I am so glad this was posted on YT! In the '70s Steeleye Span received a good amount of airplay in the NYC area. So I knew who they were. I love that there is available footage of their performances! Great dancing!!!
Seeing Maddy Prior dance across the stage brings back great memories of catching their live performances. I have seen Steeleye perform this at almost all concerts I have went to. A great all time classic Scottish ballad. Great and sad to see Tim Hart in his Steeleye prime. A must see is Tim Hart's final performances with Maddy at Cecil Sharp House in October 2008 while Tim was seriously ill.
like Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span revolutionized Medieval and Renaissance period folk music into "Folk Rock" during the 1970's....Maddy Prior was the female vocalist for many years and Richard Thompson was the guitarist......
Thursday 7th November 2024. 14.33pm. Dear Sir/Madam. Good-afternoon. How are you? I trust you are well. This is the official song of The Bull Of Sudan. The Uncrowned Champion Of England and Northern Ireland. I welcome all comers, none barred. THANK YOU GOOD-LUCK TAKE CARE.
I can remember Maddy playing the spoons and the whole group telling a truly appalling joke, then, after their regular set, going offstage and appearing in rock'n'roll gear to sing Buddy Holly's 'Rave on'. Great days from a great band!
How true My wife bought us tickets to see Steeleye Span once thinking she was going to see Steely Dan That was the first and last time that she listened to English Folk-Rock!
I always knew steely Dan was a fake band, so these are the real musicians that played for them in the studio, huh? And everyone criticizes the monkeys and Milli vanilli, ha! 😁
such ia cool band ... i only heard that most known album from cartrips as child .... But they allways makse me think of another outfit that is wat more obscuyr, very similiar and you wonder, why they, "Fiddlers dram" only made one album, its here on youtube i it´s entirity and its one good song after another .... their hit is their worrst i think and doesnt sound like rock....Roadtrip to bangor i think its called, it´s a little cheeky with lyrics like "cracking open a bottle of cide, laying back spreading her fanny ...
Maddy Prior dancing on the piano when I saw them open for Jethro Tull remains one of the highlights of my concert compendium.
She's awesome 😎
An Enchantress!!!
I use this song to interest (some) students to history. The song is from ~1720s, and opens up a whole history. Well played by SS!!
I always loved when Maddy danced.
That drum beat. Ancestral Celtic Northern European memory.
Stammen Sie aus Afrika?😂
@@spackretiredThey're from Germany. Why did you say Africa? Which, by the way, is a huge and diverse continent and not a country.
What a sound, Maddy, what a voice ! fantastic. Best ever !
Soberba interpretação do grupo e com uma voz da Maddy Prior a seduzir...fabulosos!!! Steeleye Span forever and ever!!!

As a musician you often get carried away.

I agree...slower is better
Saw Maddy dancing in a pub in Fulham one night in 1971-ish. Magical!

Thank you, this is amazing. I love Steeleye Span
The most beautiful voice ever, Freddy Mercurcry your eyes out.
Seeing Maddy dancing is something wonderful! But the band is great!
Fun to see Peter on mandolin, and Tim on dulcimer.
That's not a dulcimer , but a slide guitar!
It's a dulcimer!@@tommyrawlings3046
@@tommyrawlings3046it’s a Mountain Dulcimer, as opposed to the one you play with the hammers.

Absolutely brilliant fab voice seen these live on the rocket cottage tore
I love the way Maddie says "France" as though it was obscene although I know she doesn't feel that way generally
My parents would have loved to hear this.... Maybe they had, actually... Well, tonight I'll have a drink with their ghosts and enjoy this with them.
brilliant band i saw them back in the seventies!
They will be at the New Forest Festival in July

Great performance; my favorite line-up of the band.

What language is Maddy Prior singing in? Olde English?
scots, it's a dialect of english spoken in parts of scotland
Lowland Scots.
