- How to replace the string on the Toro 60-volt Max cordless 15 inch / 13 inch string trimmer, from the moment the string runs out to resuming cutting. This is not a difficult job but it can be a bit fiddly. UPDATE: There is feedback that this method and process is also used on the 60V Greenworks Pro.
Need the Owners Manual ... Home Depot have those too,

I’ve literally watched 20 other videos on restringing my line and this was by far the best. No talking, simple, quick, and good angle to watch it be done. Thank you 🙌🏽
Thanks for the confidence boost, Steve. It's good to know this approach is working out!
A man of few words. Still demonstrated perfectly. Good job!
Thanks, Kathy.
For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.
Thank you, monica. Check out all our helpful videos for even more to love!!
I’m getting really frustrated with this feed line. I’ve followed this and even have purchased the pre loaded spools and put it on as directed here and I still have to stop 10 times during edging to respool because the line isn’t feeding auto or it goes inside the housing. Even my cheap B&D never did this. It’s brand new
Are you using the 0.08 line, Chris? Larger sizes may jam. If you are, then maybe try using the 0.065 line but it should work with 0.08. Otherwise, contact Toro for help.
@@PicRic Yes I am. The first jam and issue I had was actually the pre-loaded out of the box spool. Pretty much turtled back inside the housing. That’s when I followed here how to respool it. It worked for the next weeks trimming but then started having feeding issues with the auto feeder. When I put in a Toro Preloaded line following the end of this video…same issues. It’s constant either taking the line inside or won’t feed. When it does feed it is too much and I’ll find pieces of it in yard. Thanks so much for the suggestions and help!
@@chrismiller6589 My pleasure, Chris. Hope Toro can help you out.
This is the same spool for my 80v Greenworks trimmer and have the same problems stringing it. Even the preloaded ones don’t work after a bit. FLAWED DESIGN. Life is short bought a different trimmer.
Probably got your spool reversed.
Great video, thank you very much as I shut off 5 earlier videos on people that just wanted to talk, just perfect training! 😀
Thanks, Ray! It sure helps - and encourages - me when I see my Subscriber numbers climbing following such positive comments!
Thank you for an easy to understand tutorial. I went through 4 other videos before I found your video. Thank you for posting. I like the trimmer. Works great and quiet. Powerfully.
Thank you for watching! Please, like and subscribe for many more review and how to videos in the same style.
This was awesome! I have been begging my husband to weed Wack with the Toro trimmer I bought him. He said there was something wrong with it and hasn't used it for several years. I pull it out from the dust today, watched your video and guess what! It was out of line. I watch your video, bought some new line and restrung the cartridge myself. Finished my whole yard! It's wonderful!!!! A thousand THANK YOUS!!!
I love a good news story, philomena. A thousand, "You're welcomes", to match!!
Worst trimmer for adding and dispensing line. Spent $$$$$$ on a full line of 60 v max tools and the trimmer SUCKS.
Hi Frank. Do you mean 'it did until you followed this video?' I know the instructions leave something to be desired - that's why this video is here. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Super simple to do great trimmer!
@@lauferg25 Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Gianna.
Same here, but I still like Toro (my old gas Toro push mower lasts like 20 years, still working, I gave it to my neighbor when I upgraded to battery based). Toro is pretty good for yard equipments (not like those new names). Also invested a lot on their 60v products (push mower, string trimmer, blower, hedge trimmer, chain saw, pole saw, snow blower, snow shovel), have 8 ish batteries, it'd be hard to switch to another platform. lol.
The trimmer isn’t bad!
Thanks so much for the help, I couldn’t get mine working using just the instruction manual. Very difficult for me to restring.
You're welcome, Kevin. Thanks for the feedback. Enjoy your yard work!
Amazingly simple. The critical step is the first one, which I never would have guessed on my own, folding the line in half and wrapping it around the middle into the same direction. Thank you 🙏
That is an easy way to get the right amount of line and to keep it balanced between each feed out isn't it. Thanks for chipping in and contributing your thoughts, Dan.
Great! Pleased to help, Dan.
Thank you for this video!!! I couldn't find out how to wrap it properly, without having to re- do it 7 times. I did the method that you used in the video, and didn't have to fix it once while using it for over an hour! Thanks again!!! 👍
That's great to hear, Dylan. Pleased the video helped.
Thank you so much for this. I just got this thing and used it once and one end of the line got lost somewhere inside so I had to take it apart and then spent the next 40 minutes having a whole meltdown about missing my dad bc I couldn’t figure it out from the included instructions. Great video. Thanks so much again! 🙏🏻
Thank you for your kind words, Crafty. Very pleased to have helped you out.
Product is getting returned tomorrow. The spool that came out the box didn’t feed multiple times. Followed the instructions re lined it. Works great till it has to feed line. Then nothing. The bumper gets stuck in up position. Sad. No more Toro products for me.
Oh, that's a shame. I think it's the first time this problem has come to light on here. What are you going to get instead?
Simple instructions shown efficiently with no voiceover required. And it works for my weed eater! Bless you. You are doing Gawd’s work!
High praise indeed! Thank you.
I appreciate this video very much , Thanks for such a detail and clear video
Thank you, Darvin. Very pleased to hear you find it so useful.
Great video! 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for visiting Captain Larry.
Thank you for this, very clear (the manual sucks at showing this). But I still can't quite see how the second end of the line goes into the up/down notch as shown in 2:23 to 2:43. There are two locations with the notches to hold the string, one one each side. But they're both on the top side of the spool. Putting the line from the top half into the notches is straight forward, how do I get the string in the bottom half into the notches. That's the part I'm not quite able to see in this video. Thanks!
You need to 'unlock' the cords before feeding through the exit holes. The video shows this from about 2:48 on. It's a fiddly but necessary step. Does that work for you, Toby?
@@PicRic oh oh oh, those notches are just to hold it until it's back in the casing, right before feeding through exit holes. Got it, thanks!
@@tobygohn4147 Yes, that's right, Toby. The cords need to be under tension to prevent them loosening off and causing problems.
I can’t get the plastic thing off to even reach my string. It’s like jammed or something. Advice?
The first piece of plastic housing has two buttons which do need a bit of force to push to release. The second piece should lift right off. If either are sticking due to the build up of organic material then a little gentle and even leverage may help while also pushing the buttons or gently working the inner housing to release it. Let us all know how you get on, Rebecca. Good luck.
My string got short do I need to replace it or just pull it out?
Have you gradually extended the string - via the bump - over time and no more will come out? If so then replace with a new string. If not, then have a read of the instructions first.
Thanks for this. I thought I was just stupid and doing it wrong. Nope. It's just not the best line feeding system.
Pleased to help, Buff'. Is there a "best line feeding system"? Let me know when you find it!
@PicRic Ego probably has the best system. You just feed the line in till it's even on both sides, then press and hold the auto load button. Milwaukee has a similar loading method, but you manually rotate the head after loading it in.
A lot less fiddling about. Don't even have to take your gloves off with the other systems.
The Ego and Milwaukee batteries also charge significantly faster than the Toro system.
I've got a Toro string trimmer and a leaf blower. Just bought a new Toro 2.5amp hour battery too. But I also just started buying Milwaukees M18 stuff. Was planning on using Toro for lawn tools and Milwaukee for power tools. But I might start buying the Milwaukee stuff for the yard too. The feeding system on the Toro and the battery charge times is just way behind their more expensive competitors.
@@BuffaloWarrior7 Very interesting, Buff'. I also have the Milwaukee Quik-Lok String Trimmer, ua-cam.com/video/TP2GFHuMOQ4/v-deo.html. It is easy to use, reload included. Their edger is very, very good and I see more Milwaukee M18 Quik-Lok tools on their pipeline. I am not too bothered by the slower Toro charging time but then I don't rely on these tools to earn a living. Thanks again for great input to this conversation. Don't be a stranger now!!
Works a lot better when it’s strung the correct sirection
It sure does, Blake. There is a little diagram on the spool itself that you may find useful next time, ua-cam.com/video/WSGxNG7JgKg/v-deo.html.
I have this one. But now it's button feed bump is broken. How can I remove it? I have a replacement shipping to my home. Just tried to remove it, couldn't figure out how. Really appreciate it 🙏.
Oh, I've never had to do that. Are you replacing the bump cover or something more? Will your replacement come with instructions?
@@PicRic some ppl (below) said just use a flat head screw driver to push the screw down (not to screw it off) to get it off. Will try that. There is no instruction in the manual about how to remove it. "Pushing it down" is kind of against human nature (maybe Toro thinks everyone would know this?). I tried screwing it off (but looks like it's fixed), squeezing the inner port inward, no luck. Took me 15 minutes yesterday and no luck. DIdn't want to force it. Well, will let everyone know. I assume the bump head will be worn sooner or later.
@@mwang168 "some ppl" can you be specific about your references? What screw? Where is it? I know the manual doesn't cover replacing the bump head which is why I asked if your replacement will have guidance?
@@PicRic pinged you below.
@@mwang168 Sorry for delay in getting back to you. The references you link are mixed in nature. Have you received your bump head kit now? Does it have guidance? Is it a subject that ties in with this video?
Great video, but why not talk and explain it as you go. Was it 10 feet of line per spool, or total?
Hi Randy, it is one 10 foot piece of .080 inch string that is bent at the midpoint, clipped into the anchoring slot in the center rim of the single spool and wrapped clockwise around each of the channels. That is what the video shows and that, in turn, is what the Operator's Manual describes. No magic, just helping out by showing how. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@PicRic Thanks for the clarification. I've misplaced my owner's manual, so I needed the "refresher" lesson!

Do you keep the line in the wind cord locking holes? Or are those just to keep in place before feeding it through the exit on the main head, and take them out before replacing the head?
You need to 'unlock' the cords before feeding through the exit holes. The video shows this from about 2:48 on. It's a fiddly but necessary step.

I'm pleased it did. Thanks for letting me know, SuperFitRoy.
Thanks for posting this. You've taken the frustration out of spooling trimmer line on this Toro.
Thanks for the feedback, John. Happy spooling!
10/10 i have orange braided .87 in mine, no jams ever. This video is perfect for demonstrating how it's done. You are a gentleman and a scholar my friend.
Thank you, Ian. As a graduate of the School of Hard Knocks, University of Life campus, I appreciate your candour!
Return these if you own them. Home Depot stopped carrying them. I’ve gone through three and none have worked past out of the box. There is a reason the toro line is done at Home Depot
Return what? The tool, the line, the spool? I can see that my local Home Depot have plenty in stock right now and I can get them delivered too. Please make your comments a bit clearer and more specific, will you, DS?

I have one of these. I hit a black pipe hidden in tall grass and cracked/broke the plastic piece that the spool snaps onto connected to the motor. Now it's off balanced and I have to find a replacement part. I figured it would be tougher than that.
Sorry to hear about your mishap. The manual indicates that all parts are available and you can obtain them from Toro here, www.toro.com/en/customer-support.
I guess its button feed bump broken. Mine just broke too. How did you remove it? There is a flat screen in the center, but I guess it is a fixed one. Someone said turn clockwise,. But no luck here. Really appreciate it 🙏
thank you so much. i was ready to call Toro and go off. they did not explain this in the manual. thank you!!!!!!!
You are welcome, Nick. I'm pleased to have helped. Your kind feedback makes it worthwhile.
Don't know about this one but the new Toro 60V trimmers are WAY easier to feed new line. Turn the arrow on the know to the arrow mark indicator. Slide the line in the feed side (about 10') through until the string is equidistant on both sides. Then, turn the knob counter-clockwise until the string is fully inside the casing, with about 6" on each side. Viola, ready to go!
That sounds similar to the Milwaukee trimmer ... Are you familiar with that one, pj?
Looks like a husqvarna T35 head like i put on my dewalt trimmer
Oh yeah, it does doesn't it. I wonder if they are fully interchangeable?
@PicRic i have dewalt for quite a few yrs I've tried all the heads echo dewalt husqvarna I've found the husqvarna to be my favorite head with least problems looking to maybe change to the toro i just got the super recycler battery mower

Call me dumb but ah...What gage does this model take?
Great question, andrew. I used the 2 mm / 0.080 inch string recommended in the manual. Part No. 88201.
How do u get it to loosen , when the line gets short .. tap the spool to ground ? Tried it didn’t work .. cut my finger trying to , get this too to work properly, guess it’s gonna be returned
Great question, Zeek. It could be a number of things; Is the string the right size - 0.08 line? Is it wound correctly? Is the bump mechanism clean? Can you manually advance the line? Let us know what you find.
Thank you! This was simple and straight forward!
Thank you, Milos! Great feedback. That's the goal for all videos on this channel.
the bump head on mine keeps getting stuck inside the line housing. i have to stop, remove the head and twist the bump head out and then i can continue. if not it wont advance the line. ive had this problem since day one, I've had it a year now, this is a constant headache.
if possible i would like to remove this bump head and put on a trimmer head that uses cut to length lines.
I've never had that issue so it sounds like a problem with the head on yours. Have you contacted Toro about it?
@@PicRic i contacted their website and the response was refer to the manual on how to load the trimmer line properly. i also noticed on the posting board, other reviews that had the same issue. im guessing this is why the newer version has a different head.
@@jerryhardyjr5312 Yes, could be. Will the newer head fit on yours?
@@PicRic possibly, i dont know, i dont know how to remove the bump head, if i did, i would try to attach a different style line housing.

Thanks for showing your appreciation too.
Great video! After winding tge string when u put the 2nd part into the 2 holes does the string cross over the central divider? Hope that makes sense i cant get the self feed to work. Thanks
Great point, John, but no, the string must not cross over the central divide into either of the other - separated - channels.
There are temporary string holes/clips built into the reel for each channel. Does that make sense? Let me know. Thanks for watching.
@PicRic thanks! So it has to cross the midline to temporarily clip them on because both sets of holes are on the same side of the spool right? Just when you unclip them it shouldn't cross then right?
@@couchistopdog
Correct, yes; In the video you see the string under tension to prevent it unraveling and then feeding the strings through the outer holes - that is when the strings are each in the respective channels and not crossing anywhere. Is that clearer? If not, I'll respond tomoz coz my laptop needs to update and won't let me put it off any longer.
@PicRic Thanks that's how it did string it but the line won't feed out for some reason.
@@couchistopdog You are clearly diligent, John, so it is safe to assume everything is clean and free from debris, the correct string size is used, the winding direction is correct, the spool is the right way, battery is charged and the bump feed springs back into position without hesitating ... Did you keep the lines strictly separated and under a bit of tension until both fed cleanly into their respective holes? If so then ... I dunno, maybe try a thinner gauge string? What do you think, John?
Thank you. I have never done this correctly. I left an empty trimmer at the end of the last season. Fall Me was just lazy and Spring Me was pissed at being left with this chore.
