  • Its March 2023 and the trout season in Scotland has officially begun!
    Using various tactics, I try my hand at catching some early season trout on the Mauchline & Ballochmyle beat of the River Ayr, East Ayrshire, Scotland.

    Another great video Robert, thanks for sharing, I’ve fished that stretch for the first time last year, it’s an absolutely stunning part of the river, and got a couple of good grayling at the same spot you got yours.
    I use the Agility 2 rods too, superb value. Just got the Agilty 2 Rise in a 4wt which should be good for up there.
    Thanks for the tips on set up, moved from Stillwater to river last year and still picking things up. Haven’t used streamers yet, but had a lot of success on that first pool with the klink ‘n’ dink set up.
    The way you structured the video is great, nice and clear so thanks again

      Thanks again for watching Murray, really glad you enjoyed the video!
      I’m re familiarising myself with the river too after quite a bit of a hiatus, only really starting again since last year. Good to know you’ve had a bit of success on the beat as well.
      There are definitely some really good trout there, hopefully we can winkle one or two out this year 😊
      Keep me posted with how you get on 👍

    Nice to see a river i also fish on UA-cam.The pool you fished where someone has built a seat.It used to be my favourite grayling pool on that section of the Ayr.But the Ayr was very poor for grayling this Winter past.It was full of Cormorant all winter.Maybe they are giving it a good hammering.I am home from work in a few days.I will likely fish the Clyde or Avon first before the Ayr.Looking forward to wetting a line.My name is Robert also.Look forward to watch your white Cart video.Always fancied getting the white Cart permit.Maybe next year.

      I hope you get into some fish on the Clyde or the Avon. I think the Clyde is on my list this year, just on a day ticket down at Abington. Quite fancy a go at the Annan too. Tight lines 🎣

      Thanks very much Roddy! I’ve always fancied wetting a line on the upper Tay. My wife and I stayed at Balintaggart last year at GrandTully and I have to say there’s some lovely looking water about there.
      I’ll be up at Dalmarnock or Dalguise for a shot at the salmon at some point this year too 👍

    I love my 9'6 5wt sigma, very good rod and reel combo. I also got the 10ft 7wt sigma but it was no where near as good IMO. I also upgraded to a premium fly line which was a good investment the line is much thinner, has less stretch and memory than the stuff that comes with the combo

    Just bought a season ticket from Mauchline and Ballochmyle club, can't wait to get on the river, it's my first time fishing the river Ayr. I travelled down from Glasgow to Failford to check the river out, looks great, any info on that stretch just behind the pub down through the gorge is it safe for wading etc any information much appreciated 👍

      Hi Erica, thanks for watching and welcome to MBAC! I’m sure you will love fishing the river Ayr, plenty of nice trout and always the chance of a salmon at the back end of the season.
      I actually haven’t fished the stretch down at Failford yet, it used to belong to another club and Mauchline only got the rights to that stretch this year so I don’t know it too well. Im sure if you ask the guys on the clubs Facebook page someone will be able to provide some info.
      Thanks again for watching and tight lines for the season 😊🎣

      Yeah if you have Facebook you can join the Mauchline and Ballochmyle Angling Club Facebook group and get in touch with Gordon Millar he will sort you out with a permit. Or if you find yourself passing Belston Loch which is the clubs stocked Loch you can pop in and see Max, you can buy one from him.

    It might not be your type off fishing but I've been useing a Shakespear Agility2 10ft 3wt for over a year now on still water trout, great fun, Shakespear do make a half decent rod. Had a 10lb trout a few weeks back and the Shakespear rod handle it great.
    Question, have you considered a trout spey / micro spey rod for those tough areas where you can't back cast? I keep looking at these 11.3ft double handle rods... any thoughts?

    • @robertdoesfishing
      @robertdoesfishing  Рік тому

      Oh nice, I hadn’t really considered the agility as a stillwater rod but I guess there’s no reason not to though! Glad to hear you’ve had success on it 💪 🎣
      I have an 11ft switch rod that I’ve yet to try out but it will most likely be for summer salmon/sea trout fishing. I have seen the trout Spey outfits and I would probably like to have a try of one first to see how I get on with it before committing to buying one.
      Thanks for watching! 🙏

    Love the video. The river looks very "peaty". Is that the case? What sort of natural flylife is there?

    • @robertdoesfishing
      @robertdoesfishing  Рік тому

      Thanks very much Mat!
      Yeah the Ayr is a peaty river, most of the rivers certainly in Ayrshire are peaty and have the classic tea stained water.
      Regarding fly life the usual suspects appear on the river, upwinged flies, stoneflies, caddis, Mayfly, midges and gnats.

    Hi Robert, looks a fantastic place to fish, is that the helmsdale waders? The clyde is nearer to me and has some decent trout in it but I'd have no idea where to go. Mr Mcphail fishes Ayr aswell. Look forward to your next video. Hopefully I'll be out within a month and a half.

    Robert I'm so new to fly fishing I've not even got a fly wet yet 😅...anyway watching the video and whilst you were describing your rods set up I couldn't take my eyes off your fishing vest...I've seen less equipment on a policemans vest 😅😅....my question is : what should I carry as a minimum when I start my fishing...should have started earlier, but ended tearing tendons in my ankle 😢😢... hopefully get out in the next few weeks 🤞

    • @robertdoesfishing
      @robertdoesfishing  Рік тому +1

      Ha thanks Jack yes the vest might seem a bit overkill to some, but to me I like to have everything I need on me if I’m out for most of the day including my lunch in the backpack section of the vest. The main thing is, it keeps everything I need and doesn’t hinder me or get in the way.
      As a minimum you’d probably want, Rod, reel, tippet/leader, flies and a net.
      Sorry to hear about your ankle that doesn’t sound pleasant, I hope it heals up soon and you can get out on the water!

    • @brianr9529

      A rubber net so you can release fish without their fins being damaged. Thin long scissors or a release tool incase a fish takes a hook deep. Polaroid glasses to see into the water. Essential stuff.
