This time, we are talking about the deep lore of DOOM & DOOM Eternal, focusing on elements that the community has long thought to be plot holes, as well as some new questions introduced in the Ancient Gods Part 2.

You mean sensible instead of sensual?
@@PresidentNUT None of what you're saying makes sense. Carmack didn't make any of the games by himself, he was just the guy who wrote the engines without which the games wouldn't exist. He left id Software before Doom 2016 came to fruition, and Hugo wasn't involved with the series until Doom 2016.

Hugo is a true Plot Hole Slayer
I bet you can patch plot wholes better then anyone mr conagher
More like a Plot Slayer. lol
Awesome to come back to this interview after the dark ages has been announced! Hugo had a plan this whole time!
Hugo is like: the real question is not "why" but "why not". An example, Why is the Doom Slayer ridiang a dragon? And the answer is: WHY NOT? IS COOL
that planet doesn't have horses, so, you know, drago-transport
People call it a cheesy story with all this stuff. I mean what the fuck Doom Slayer is riding this dragon like his damn pet. What is not cool about that? This game is hitting you with so much over the top things that I literally can not wipe the smirk out of my face. Oh you want to shoot a planet with a big ass canon? Oh you want shoot yourself out of a canon for fast travel? You want to bring the most dangerous demonic form to life just to kill it for good...on a dragon...in a big ass avengers endgame fight? Why the fuck not? Who would hate that?
I was kinda excited because I thought for once in a Doom DLC we’d get more than one boss fight; grounding the dragon and branding it with the Slayer’s mark in order to gain passage. Instead it materializes out of nowhere because the plot needs it
Cave Johnson would like him.

“Hugo is like Romero but without the ego”
- Civvie 11 (the #1 internet boomer)
Where did he say this?
I can’t remember but probably either his doom 2016 or eternal video
I think this was said by That Trav Guy
"boomer" 😂
As someone who watches Civvie vids on a dailey basis (especially the Doom ones) when making video game sprites, not once in his videos does he ever say this. Maybe separate social media, but not once in his videos.
I really don’t want to think of Doom without Hugo Martin.
Me too. That would be a harsh reality. I just felt sad just by thinking of it
@@cosmozapallo4530 No, doom eternal
i do. it sucks
@@cosmozapallo4530 The game absolutely is not "done" *especially the franchise in general* and theoretically there's a seemingly unlimited amount of DLC *and Doom games* they could explore.
Also, considering they objectivelly made the most satisfying & perfect core gameplay in any FPS to date, to just pretend the game is "done" would be full blown autism.
I'm glad he addressed the "killing VEGA" plot hole, that's the one that immediately jumped at me after TAG 1.
So it's more like Sam was cool with killing the Father but since he lived, he reworked his plans for power and settled for his original position as right-hand-man (for now).
I think he also tried to absorb the father’s power in the life sphere part, so maybe he still wasn’t really fine with it.
@@bluefiregaming6565 Did he? Unfortunately Doomguy broke Father's sphere before we could see what Samur would do with it lol. Samur always said stuff like "he will save us all" and "he will save me" so I feel like (whether he was loyally serving the Father as Dr Hayden or not) he was completely subservient to the Father after he was returned to his seraphim body.
*"WHY DOES DOOMGUY RIDE DRAGON!!!1"*
"Why not?"
Imagine if ID made a full CG/3D Movie based around DooM and explaining the backstories, mid stories, games, everything.

@@dud5606 True
An ms paint animation of doom is better than any of those movies
I could imagine a doom series based on the time when the doom slayer joined the sentinels but it isn't the slayer that's the main character, rather it'd be someone in the sentinels, maybe even Valen
And end up like halo legends? No thanks
“The Clone Wars era of the Doom series.” God I fucking love Hugo.
Hugo is community Dad. I'm 39 and I aspire to his outlook and passion. What an awesome guy!
He is the doomdad!
The two questions I've had ever since I finished DOOM Eternal for the first time FINALLY got asked to and answered by Hugo! Both why Samuel ordered VEGA's destruction in 2016 and how much of Eternal's plot was constructed when DOOM 2016 was created. Great interview!
"Let's make something worthy of the Slayer" - that's the quote that stuck with me. You have sir. But there is still more awesomess to pile on
10:07 I figured that the Father sent the Night Sentinels the coordinates of Immora and routed their teleports through the Gate of Divum as soon as the Slayer turned it on. They were ready to go as soon as they saw the beacon at the end of the World Spear level.
I was expecting for his kids to appear and dance to the beat of “Hugo Martin was my Dad!” XD. Nice Interview btw.
When Hugo said "It will not be due to a lack of effort, I promise you that" with his hands together, I genuinely wanted to hug him and to thank him for everything.
Hugo’s passion is truly genuine. 100%
6:26 the Dark Lord out here getting frisky with the Khan Mayker. What a player

Awesome!! I always loved that moment, it's so surreal and intimidating, and it didn't really make sense for it to be Davoth mourning the Khan, especially with the revelations in TAG2

So basically if Doom 2016 did not have Doom Guy wake up, what would’ve happened was Olivia’s deal would’ve resulted in Samuel and VEGA likely destroyed, plus the destruction of Earth. The Makyrs would’ve continued their survival, but in the process kill Father and those able to revive Father via that sphere.
Everyone saying doomguys story is done but there's so SO many huge chunks of time that they could turn into a game
I love Doom's sci-fi approach to classic fantasy and religion elements
Yeah, very Warhammer 40k-ish
Religious scientific medieval fantasy. It shouldn't work but it does.
Yeah. And it still USES magical means. Like soul powered gear. It just is in a sci-fi method.
Also, the "Tether" is just the Fortress of Doom's teleporter...and the Slayer was just chilling on the FoD until VEGA got it all under his own control.
12:00 - the most beautiful moment of this interview. Period. Eternal showed me a very self-inspirational thing - don't fear to move through life, don't stand still, fight the enthropy of the surrounding universe and never back down from the path you feel right to go through. But when Hugo said this beautiful thing my heart melted even more towards the game. He is a very inspirational figure to look up to, and not only in creative sense.
I, too, believe that Doom Guy literally deserves everything. Props to you, Hugo
Best thing Hugo said imo is the comment about broad strokes at 3:00. Having a mix between core plans already written and lore based on the current in-game setting/level being worked on by devs gives Doom the structure and spotinuity fans love. The style of development is just perfect for the tone of Doom. I just hope the story doesn't get too out of hand. He said later that he wants less codex entries and more screen time. Seems like he's got a handle on things. :)
10:08 My theory is sentinels linked their portal devices through gate of divum to open a portal inside Immora xD
maybe just a portal to the gate of divum. So just portal to portal
Yeah I'm thinking as Slayer opened the Gate of Divum, it allowed Sentinels to travel to Immora as well. Commander Valen probably followed Slayers trail in the hopes he would succeed and convinced his brothers in arms to join the cause.
Besides the Father says Hell Priests forbade the use of the beacon and once it was lit, Sentinels all around were signaled that the time has come.
And like Hugo said, the Sentinels trapped in Hell by the Priests would probably have their own access to Immora once the path is "cleared" by Slayer or after the beacon was lit.
Perhaps they readily stationed themselves strategically after all the Priests were killed to be able to attack Immora should the need come.
(And somewhere King Novik is both shaking his head but also smiling in approval!)
That's what I thought too.
I love that you used Andrew`s remake soundtracks of the original Doom games and btw you have a new subscriber
I really like this guy. Seeing him talking about his work with such affection increases the confidence that this franchise is in good hands.
I think I can add sth more to the VEGA/Father Sacrifice problem. Regardless of whether or not Samur actually was planning for his creator's death in 2016, I think the Father would still be fine if you take into account that VEGA was only the Father's mind and conscience. The Father's soul and essence were safely stored away in Ingmore's Sanctum before his amnesia and subsequent transformation into VEGA.
Hugo is such a legend. You can totally feel his passion for the game and the lore.
So, the theory that inbetween Doom 2016 and Eternal the Slayer is sent to Quake Champions is debunked?
Could that happen inbetween Doom 2 and 64?
This showed up in my feed after the trailer for Doom: The Dark Ages, I'm so hype for that game
Love this video! And cannot wait for a comic of some sorts. Hugo is so passionate and invested, it's awesome to hear.

6:10 during Taras Nabad there's a bit where he goes "this could have been different with better management", he meant himself
"You said something about Doom 3 being cannon to the main lore - could you explain that in further detail?"
"Umm, yeah... it fits, okay? Like, Doom 2016 has some visual elements taken from 3, righ-[interview ends]"
When you are in inmora, there is a portal and you can feel doom 3 vibes with the architecture.
In the new stream with hugo he re-affirmed it was a part of the universe.
The Doom plot is always interesting
Kappa
It was, at least before "TAG: P2", but after finishing this DLC I was like: "what the fuck"?
@@maraudr9524 hey they needed a way to keep the scope growing.
All they really needed to do was flesh out the codex entries in TAG2 a bit more, instead of 5 codex pages with 2-4 sentences to explain it
@@maraudr9524 Dude it's a plot twist
@@dud5606 The plot is simple. The lore is interesting.
What I wanna know is how many years old is the Slayer truly? I mean even after "EONS" the sentinels are still alive and they still knew who the Slayer was. I mean if we go for billions then that would make the Night Sentinels and the Khan Maykr also billions of yrs old.
I think I read somewhere in the codex entries about the Khan Maykr that each Khan only lives a 10,000 year period before suffering form transfiguration and it seems like the Khan in the flashbacks is the same Khan in eternal so he’s younger that 10,000
@@Foreigner-yz8lh Whole point of the maykrs using argent energy is so they could live longer than what their transfiguration would normally allow.
The sentinels being from hell kinda holds up. The father said “if there are any free tribes left in argent d’nur” argent dnur is in hell
I thought this too, but they seem to indicate that only a portion of argent d'nur was pulled into Hell.
That "series of people, who are really bad managers" line just made doom lor 100 times more relatable for me
Omg the Maykrs turn into Lovecraftian Chthulu Monsters, Quake Reboot in the Doomiverse Quake Reboot in the Doomiverse
1:21 The Dark Ages.
YOOOO A NEW COMIC FOR DOOM???
There better be a novel series like the Horus Heresy detailing the Slayer's time with the Sentinels, and during their Civil War, then the near destruction of them
Loving the lore and cutscene edits throughout btw
i imagine the antagonist for the next doom game will be samur 100% transfigurated into this cthulu being or something like that
I kind of figured the Sentinels somehow piggybacked off the Gate of Divum opening to portal there.
As far as Doom 3, given multiverse theory, that just happened on a different Mars. Truth be told there are probably innumerable iterations of humanity that were wiped out by Hell without a Doomguy to save them.
Dude Hugo Martin is the best, he's just a gamer nerd like the rest of us.
The biggest bombshell:
The mysterious voice after the Khan Makyrs death WASNT DAVOTH.

Hugo is what every video game director should inspire to be. Bless this man
I like the subtle Quake drops :o
the doom franchise is actually an autobiography series about on Hugo's life
HugoMartin made clear indication who and what Davoth is, the creator of Urdak and Jekkad, NOT Argent De'Nur and Terra. Hence why all Daviths creations, demons, cease existence outside of his realm of creations.
A lot of people jump to conclusions that Davoth is Almighty clearly jumped too far.
The Null Voice will be the main mystery after this.
14:09 Why does it look like a GTAV death screen
I think yesterday's stream summed the story up pretty good
Thanks to Hugo for bringing back the legendary DOOM franchise to life again
Great video. We need more videos like this where game creators answer lore/story questions. Lol can you imagine Kojima answering some stuff? It'd be an interrogation where he would sweat bullets.
Love the honesty here. I have zero faith and tolerance for corporate statements anymore.
Wish you had uploaded the whole thing. I think it was more than half an hour of pure lore talk.
I hope that all the master levels which come out from now, have the difficulty of the SGN master level and the pacing the other two master levels. The Perfect Combination

@@DoomguyIsGrinningAtYou. spot on. I always thought it would be epic if someone made a game based on the Silmarillion where you play as Valar like Tulkas instead of the far lesser beings like men/elves/dwarves. Then we got doom eternal where thats basically a reality :)

Great interview with Hugo Martin! Doom Eternal is a masterpiece 😊
“I wanted the idea that beyond this there could be something greater.”
So Super Hell. Got it.
So he's connecting DOOM to QUAKE but with the recent announcement of The Dark Ages, I feel that DOOM and QUAKE have become one game.
I mean it makes kinda sense to combine it.
The longer the lines about the Icon of Sin being on Earth are in the game, the stronger Hugo Martin will become.
Funny how he mentions he wants the DLC boss to turn into a dragon and the Slayer to jump in a mech to fight him, and now with The Dark Ages trailer you get to drive a mech and ride a dragon, apparently.
Here’s another interesting plot hole. The Slayer Testament VII confirmed the Slayer to be lured into a temple that collapsed on him, entrapping and defeating him in the process.
For the Slayer to have been put in the cursed sarcophagus completely naked after the temple’s collapse, the demons could’ve killed him right then and there. So why didn’t they? It’s not like the Slayer is immortal in the absolute sense. The dude simply doesn’t age, that’s all.
Perhaps Davoth wanted him merely contained so he could try to use him for another purpose
@@GoldBrickProductions
That would at least explain it. It’s just that Davoth always wanted the Slayer outta the way as opposed to actually using him.
We need a doom movie that actually goes about the story of the slayer
The doom slayer is my favourite character of all time. Totally badass he doesn't talk. Only kill demons. Doom best series of all time. I'm the biggest doom fan of the WORLD
Is that a challenge?
And even when he talks, he just says "no" when asked do you have anything to say.

I would love to just geek out with Hugo, and blather about ideas about DOOM, Hell, the Maykrs and all that.
and in case anyone cares about my attempt at the Immora Plot-hole sealant: if a King is worthy, his subjects are as well, at least by the Sentinel Code
I always figured that the guardian for Deag Nilox would have been the Spider Mastermind
What if Samur just starts going crazy amd literally consumes other beings to become a greater entity to over throw The Father? Then sets The Slayer free since hed still be powerful even without the Divinity Machines power, and tries consuming him too. And with this power makes a twisted version of Urdak.
Samuel will consume the Demonic Crucible and he will be corrupted along with all of the dimensions. This is the next plot of their game. It's all planned.
Played against Hugo in battlemode, got my ass handed to me on a silver platter
Good to hear of him! Must've been an honor haha
For the portals: I always thought because the gate of divum was opened that it created a wavelength for other portals to follow. That because the gate of divum was opened other portals could go there
What an amazing guy and what an amazing game he made.
I could listen to Hugo talk for weeks.
I hope we keep getting stories in this new Doom canon. The Maykrs and Sentinels are so cool, I'd love to see more civilizations explored in this world. There is a whole universe of baddies for the Slayer to face off against, I'd be perfectly ok with a new cosmic threat being the main enemy in the next installment, give Hell and its Demons a break, now that they've been sealed away
As an aspiring computer programmer I basically idolize John Carmack. However I've always disagreed with his assertion that story in a video game doesn't matter. If there's no story, why am I playing it? Story is very important.
God I respect Hugo's work attitude so much
Man, Hugo seems like such an honest and wholesome guy. You can clearly tell how much he loves this franchise in the way he responds. Great interview.
