  • Star Trek is easily one of my favorite Star Trek films... but does it hold up to scrutiny, or is it just another pew pew Trek film. Let's dive into the latest, and perhaps last, Kelvin Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond.

Definitely the best Kelvin film - hands down
I can’t place it ahead of Wrath, Undiscovered Country, TMP, Voyage Home or First Contact - I even have a soft spot for Nemesis (I know, believe me I know) - so I’d place it after those but it is so good and it shows how many great Star Trek films there are

He did a great job of balancing out the business needs of making it an action movie while still keep the heart and brains we expect from Star Trek.

Such a pity it got nerfed by executive meddling. I remember reading in an interview the experience put him off writing for a long time.
And that is my issue with this movie, kinda like Ant-Man: you can see the wasted potential. The outlines and echoes of a truely great movie are explicit, but it just falls short of it for me.

      BINGO.
To ME, JJ, and Kurtzman, are just bean counters who think they got talent, but don't.
To sum up one word to describe both their successes....

I legitimately blanked out 99% of Into Darkness, so I can safely say Beyond was pretty much flawless to me. I never fail to tear up at the tribute to Leonard Nimoy and the destruction of the Enterprise. And for various mental health reasons I hadn't been following the news when Anton Yelchin tragically passed, so that simple yet striking card at the end of the movie shocked me right to my core. (Sorry for leaving messages on old videos but I only found you recently!)

I remember leaving the theatre after seeing Beyond and saying to myself that this was the Star Trek that would break 1 billion dollars at the box office. It hit every mark I thought it should to achieve that goal. And then later it broke my heart to pieces when it didn't do as well as it should....because it should've. My beloved Star Trek always seemed (at least at that time) to be on the brink of ending for good. Enterprise being cancelled well before the traditional 7 seasons it's predecessors enjoyed (except for TOS, of course)...Nemisis doing so poorly...Then Star Trek (2009) breathing new life into the franchise...It gave me hope that the rest of the Star Wars / Marvel loving world would finally see what I and all the other Trekkies saw. Beyond is a great Star Trek film...It deserved better than it got. I'm always amazed and grateful for the fact that as many times as Star Trek gets knocked down it still picks itself up, dusts itself off and keeps going. I've said this many times before but we Star Trek fans are very, very lucky people. We have been given a whole universe of stories and it has carried a good lot of us through our lives. I've always thought that Paramount dropped the ball on marketing Beyond and the 50th anniversary....maybe that's the reason it's considering more Star Trek movies (at least from what I've understood). They have to know that deep down inside, Star Trek is important...Not only from an entertainment point of view but from an emotional one as well. Thanks for this review Jessie! You always do a 100 percent awesome job!!

It's a tragic truth that franchise movies usually perform at the box office based on the previous entry - Beyond's performance was as much to do with people regretting having gone to Into Darkness as it was the movie itself.

    @annieworroll4373 3 роки тому +34

    I loved it.
I hated the trailers, almost skipped it. Word of mouth convinced me otherwise and I'm so glad it did. The whole stronger together theme, the crew being more important than the ship... sooooo good.
Hell, even the whole Kirk delegating the dangerous task of piloting a drone ship where a lesser film would have the heroic captain do that.
And the absolutely critical development of the McCoy/Spock relationship.

I loved the nice touch in the Sabotage scene where Krall looked at the Franklin and referred to her as his "old friend". It helped sell his humanity, he wasn't just a monster. He was human, no matter what he looked like, he just went bad along the way. Our real monsters are the same... all too human.

I think that movie had something to do with terrorism and disproportionate responses thereto? Like an Iraq War thing? All I really remember is that the plan to murder Khan on the Klingon planet (which I think was Qu'onos) reminds me in a vague sort of way of Suleimani getting assassinated by the US.

Into Darkness was such a _great_ movie, I had _literally_ forgotten that the Enterprise had been destroyed in it. I mean, I have seen the movie, and I am still just taking Jessie's word that it happened. If that doesn't say how forgettable a movie it is....

    • @spark300c
      @spark300c Рік тому

the theme was after destruction of USS Kelvin. some in Star fleet felt it need to become militarized. Which it never mint to be. The main admiral character was turning to dark side. Khan was use for that goal. how ever he made a deal with the devil. That I think it called into darkness.

  • @guaposneeze

The villain would have been so much more interesting without leaving the "twist" of being a Romulan War vet until the very end. Kelvin Kirk's dad was killed by a Romulan. Spock's parents were killed by that Romulan. Then they meet a Romulan War vet from the past, and that could have led to some really interesting character moments if they just sat in that and had some of that classic Star Trek scenery chewing instead of dribbling a handful of little hints the characters can't react to wedged in between action set pieces.

I understand, and share, the desire to not see the Enterprise destroyed again. But _Beyond_ gave the event enough time to let the characters shine. Uhura finishing the saucer separation even though it would seal her in a compartment with the enemy was a great moment of self-sacrifice for the character. Probably my favorite moment of her in the new franchise. Kirk staying on the ship until everyone else was off, great stuff.

    • @1monki
      @1monki 3 роки тому +2

On TOS, The Enterprise was a metaphor for Earth of the future. It was metaphorically spaceship Earth. To show a destroyed Enterprise was something of a nihilistic counterculture statement in the 70s and 80s. One example is the animated film _Heavy Metal._

This was the first movie I saw in the theater after my grandmother died. My entire immediate family went to the local IMAX (museum IMAX, the big one, not a movie theater IMAX) and I remember sitting there and actually feeling hopeful for the first time in weeks. The quiet Spock scene you talk about hit me pretty hard but also helped me deal with a lot of the grief I hadn't processed yet.

  • @rmsgrey
    @rmsgrey 3 роки тому +9

I always remember Beyond as the movie that finally gave me a Kirk that belonged in the captain's chair, rather than one who might get there someday but right now gets shoved there because he's got the right name.
Which is unfair to Beyond because it has so many other little things that it does right, but that's been my pet peeve about the Kelvinverse ever since the end of Star Trek where, instead of giving him a medal and a bridge position with an established crew, the Federation decided to give the "flagship" (a whole other rant) to a group mostly composed of freshly graduated cadets.

I really love this movie. It's not perfect but it is undeniably so very Star Trek. Also (unpopular opinion) I didn't like the Spock/Uhura relationship, especially when they spent the whole second film bickering. Having them apart for this movie allowed both characters to shine the way I had always hoped for in these movies and Spock could get back to bickering with McCoy.🙂

The funny thing about the Uss franklin is that the original concept art, the nacelles were upside down. It was meant for the crew to find it buried in the sand. It was changed to this configuration because the change her location to a cliff. In fact, the guy who designed the Franklin never watched Star Trek enterprise and didn’t knew about the NX 01. So it was by complete luck that the Franklin looked like a predecessor to the enterprise. And I think that’s amazing! Trekyards made a interview with the designer. Recommend checking out

I think Beyond is my favorite of the Kelvin films too, for various reasons. There is a lot of character building and Jaylah and Scotty befriending each other is totally Trek. I agree with you on SO much about this one. I think, though, that I like it as the last [so far] film. [And I hope it is NOT the last.] It's a good capstone because it's the most mature of the films. By which I mean, everyone is reflective. They've slipped into their roles, the crew is a family, and though the Enterprise, their home, is destroyed, she is renewed.
I do feel quite differently about the destruction of the Enterprise though. I remember wincing when I learned through spoilers that Enterprise was yet again going to be in mortal danger. I dreaded it. But when Lin destroyed the Enterprise, he did it differently from Abrams. Abrams seemed to use the destruction, or near-destruction, of this beautiful ship as a flash point. A huge moment.
Lin uses it to tell a story. The story of Kirk's devotion to this beautiful mechanical beast that is his ship. Every moment the Enterprise is going down to the surface is a moment Kirk is using to fight for his crew to stay alive and make it out. Every moment is one where the senior staff are fighting to make it mean something. We see Kirk's First Love dying and his enormous respect for the Lady Enterprise. [Sorry to sound so sentimental, but I'm a sailor.] Enterprise goes down fighting, by god. I cried, as I had not in the previous films. This vessel of Kirk's youth which sustained him and his crew gave her all, to the last. AND after! God DAMN I love this movie. And Chris Pine has Kirk's character down to a T, even better than yes I dare say it, Shatner himself.
Uhura in these moments was fantastic too. She knew her drill inside and out, truly proving to naysayers that the role of Uhura is Ship's Officer not "just" Spock's girlfriend [and can I say just what a major challenge being Spock's girlfriend must be?!].
I love Kurtzman, okay? Because he's brought us Discovery and Picard and Lower Decks. And because he co-wrote the first two movies. But damn, Pegg and Jung did a great job with the KT for this film. I don't know why they got such a load of crap for it, because it really is a good script. You should pardon this old Lefty, but [in addition to your thoughts about Krall thinking he's a magnificent individualist yet relying on the collective] I thought Krall represented a certain group of people who see themselves as Rugged Individualists and suck the life out of others to achieve his ends. And here's another point of agreement: I was SO DISAPPOINTED they covered the gorgeous Idris Elba with all that makeup! WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?! Outraaaageous!
I live in a small city in Florida, and saw almost NO marketing for Beyond. Which is a damn shame, because the posters were super. I almost laughed when you said marketing [as in, "There was marketing?"] because here, there was one standee poster that went up about two weeks before the opening at my local AMC 20. And a flurry of promo ads on TV in those two weeks. The trailer -- the first one -- was one thing Lin did NOT do well. I don't remember when I finally saw the second one. But I'm very glad I saw Beyond! PS/ I did not know the reason Justin Lin named the Franklin as he did. That just warmed my lil' heart!

I always love your videos! This movie was my favorite Kelvin film. One thing I thought of when you mentioned the drinking scene with Kirk and McCoy referencing the scene from STII, was waaaay back in the original pilot, where Pike is in his quarters and his doctor comes in and gives him a drink, saying that sometimes the best doctor is a bartender. Pike was jaded and lost too, in the middle of his five year mission.

What a great video! I really like your breakdown of what made Beyond work for us older fans that aren't as cynical. When I saw Beyond in the theater I was pretty happy with it as it was a decent compromise between old and new. The characters felt so much better and closer to TOS characters that we know and love with the thin story plots and action pieces the new Trek movies has. I thought the dirt bike scene was incredibly cool and inventive with Kirk using Jaylah's hologram discs and the gas that turns into a solid to protect his crew as they wait to beam out. That's what a captain does. Not run around the place like the first two movies had. It's a shame he didn't order the Enterprise to get out of there sooner rather than keep shooting. Would have been nice to see some more commanding so we see the Enterprise put up a really good fight before being taken out. The saucer section stuff was fun as well and you could the camera hold on the burning wreckage for a bit to pay just a little more respect. I would have like to have seen more Trek films like this because now I feel the characters are in the right place. McCoy and Spock have a better appreciation of each other and Uhura is more support. I know it sucks for those actors, but they all can't be the main character. Jaylah is a wonderful addition and it would be nice to have her take over Chekov's spot, as his character may have moved onto better things... The Beastie Boys callback was cool and I liked it here even though I detested it in 2009. Wish the movie did better in the theater but after STID, I think too many people felt burned.
Again, great job and if I may make one technical comment: I'm not sure what color your backdrop was but it was the same as the light you were using and the reflections across your glasses were pretty distracting. A proper green screen may be in order. :)

But I went to my 1st convention with my big brother, and that was the issue then. He's been gone some 10 years now, but I still identify as a trekker, not trekkie.... I'm hard core loyal to original star trek up to TNG (DS9 and voyager were awesome shows, but I was there for the enterprise).... The whole new time line seemed cheap when it was announced.
Had a bit of a grudge towards modern trek. U've helped me see it so much better.

Iam tearing up right now they were my heroes as a child growing up watching those orginal movies and crew .
As well as DS9 and voyager with TNG
That video game kicked ass i loved the game.

Didn't see Beyond in theaters because I didn't like the violence in STID (I don't go see a Trek film so that I can see/hear skull and bones being crushed with bare hands. No thanks.)
But I eventually saw Beyond this year and I liked it a lot. I truly hope we get more kelvin Trek movies or maybe a show.

Thank you for this Jessie, every time you do a review like this or really any of your video essay. You relight that fire that got me into Star Trek in the first place. Like you said it easy to pick out the bad things about star trek universe, or the politics that goes on behind the scenes. Star Trek is about some much more than that. I look forward to seeing the rest of your work.

I just finished watching Beyond for the first time. It was such a fun movie, and is definitely near the top of my Trek movies list now that i've finally got around to seeing it.
I died laughing when Bones brings up that Spock "gave [his] girlfriend a tracking device." LOL. The line delivery is great and the look on everyone's face really sells it.
Tears were streaming down my face when Spock looks at the photo of the old crew near the end of the film.
Crossing my fingers that Jaylah shows back up in a future Kelvin film, if another one ever gets made.

(sorry I keep thinking of more stuff to add here because I love this movie so much and it's so under analysed compared to the others) I really appreciate how the opening has Kirk and the rest of the crew just going about their daily lives in his log because there really is no movie that does this aboard ship. All of the movies just go straight into the mission with the only real exceptions being Worf's promotion on the holodeck in Generations and the diplomatic dinner in Insurrection. But this movie very clearly shows the Enterprise as being a living community which has always been an aspect in the series and indeed it doubly makes us care about the crew given that they become so important in this movie beyond just the senior staff which I'm not sure ANY other Trek film does (with the possible exception of Scotty's nephew in Wrath of Khan). I know the "Absent friends line" at the end invokes Anton and Leonard and the other lost Trek veterans over the years, but in the context of the movie it actually shows everyone giving a damn about all the red shirts. None of the senior staff died. They are all there but plenty of the rest of the crew died and this is the ONLY trek film and one if the few times in the series that does more than simply shrug off the losses of the extras.
In a similar way in regards to how this is one of the few movies that has somewhere other than Earth be under threat. It demonstrates that humanity is not insular. It's not just Earth we care about any more but all life everywhere and the simple matter that Yorktown is threatened means that our heroes will lay down their lives to save those people. The only other time this is highlighted in the movies is again, weirdly, Insurrection. We even seen this in a more personal level when we see how utterly devastated Uhura is when Ensign Syl is killed by Krall. She may be Starfleet which we as Trek fans appreciate but a casual viewer sees Uhura being broken hearted over an odd alien creature. Someone completely different to her and it all matters. Every. Single. Life in this movie is made to matter.

I have a theory this movie has an additional 'Easter egg' homage reference in addition to the "Sabotage" song. The song was transmitted at frequency 57.7MHz. This frequency was inside the analog TV VHF spectrum that the original series was broadcast. This spectrum was later auctioned off by the FCC for reallocation when HDTV arrived.

I really loved Beyond as well. Part of me longs for an extended version where we could have seen or learned more about Elbas character and what drove him to take those steps.
In the same way Nero had a lot of back story in the Countdown comic etc which really gave his character meaning in 2009 and was lacking in the film itself.
I do not think it is one of the best, but absolutely in my top four. Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country, First Contact and Beyond. Not in that order but some combination of those four.

I actually loved all the Kelvin timeline movies in the darkness I felt had more potential than any but it just petered out. This movie was a great movie first Star Trek it felt like you said like an episode I too was thrilled that he mentioned Xindi and Romulan Wars which makes sense because they would have had the exact same timeline up to the point where of course the Kelvin was destroyed. them taking that into account made me happy it's like okay they're making sure they're sticking with continuity but still doing their own thing. I'm hoping we eventually see that fourth movie at some point

When younger I never had interest in trek until the JJ movies. At the time I really enjoyed the first, by the time I saw this one which I felt personally was the best of the three, I decided to bite the bullet and give TNG a chance. I have adored trek for the pass few years and would argue I now hold it more dearly then I did Star Wars. Looking back after at these movies, I still enjoy beyond far more than the first two, but these films were important and lead me to one of my most favourite comforts.

'Beyond' did indeed ramp-up the Kelvin-verse, so I agree that it should have been the second in the series. Don't get me wrong - 'Into Darkness' still has a place, but just not as the first sequel!

Perfect timing. I finally saw the DVD last night. I liked the ensemble casting where everyone gets to make a contribution. Although the bickering between Spock and McCoy seemed really forced (probably because I it’s three movies vs. multiple TOS shows and movies). Although I noticed that Spock refers to him as Leonard (when the drones show up to kill them before they are beamed away). I don’t think that has ever happened. I liked seeing Sulu’s family which gives him a personal stake in the situation.
There is definitely a bigger theme in this movie which is the need to move on and be integrated into a new world which requires a different mindset and skill set. Krall felt abandoned and was not able to grow beyond a point because of that abandonment. If he was rescued he may have been able to grow into a new world but would have died a while ago. Because he was unable to grow emotionally and intellectually he was stuck in this time warp he created for himself.
I also liked the villains capabilities and this swarm concept. Definitely original for a different universe.

Love this, thanks. I think it's my favorite of the Kelvin films. 2 criticisms that I heard someone else give that I think are totally valid. First, the bees totally destroy the enterprise. They don't need the super bad ass weapon except to show abject cruelty. I find that profoundly disconcerting. Second, Scotty hangs off a rock and then suddenly he's on firm ground. That totally bugs ME once it was pointed out. Like, how did he get out of that spot? And it's been done so many times.. it held no drama for me. Heck, it was even done in the first Kelvin film. Again, no drama because we knew nothing was going to happen.

I’m so glad I decided to watch this video while I was feeling down, as it totally helped lift my mood. It is my unequivocal favourite Star Trek movie and I liked seeing someone else have such deep enthusiasm for it.
My biggest complaint with this film has always been in the timeline of Spock’s storyline. I think it ties to your suggestion that this works much better as a second film. I didn’t understand Spock’s motivations for want to go back to Vulcan NOW, after Star Trek Into Darkness spent so much time establishing just how important his relationships with Kirk and Uhura were to him.
It would’ve made much more sense to me if Spock had found out about Spock Prime’s death and then decided to leave Starfleet, as the only reason he remained in Starfleet was because he “could be in two places at once” and that was now gone. Then in the end he decides to remain because he realizes (by seeing the picture of the Prime crew) that the only way he can truly honour Spock Prime’s legacy is by living the life Spock Prime wanted for him. I may have banged on about this for a while, but it’s a very small complaint from me and one I just explain away in my head with “Spock knew that Spock Prime was dying before actually getting word of it had happened.”
When it comes to the Sulu as LGBTQ+, I think a huge mistake was made in the packaging of him. They said he was gay and George Takei protested, because he always portrayed Sulu as attracted to women, but… I don’t know, why don’t you say his character is bisexual and in one timeline he pursues relationships with women and in this one he just happened to fall in love with a man? It’s no less queer representation. Oh well. Whatever.
This movie just makes me so so happy. I love the Spock and McCoy interactions. I love getting MORE McCoy, because he was so sidelined in the other movies and Karl Urban is so freakin perfect as McCoy. I love the alien looks (the Suicide Squad thing is an absolute robbery) and the new costumes. Sabotage is such a great moment. Jaylah is a fantastic character. Just… Gah. I love this movie so much.

@@TheCastellan IIRC, there was a line cut from ST 09 where Spock Prime posits that the universe naturally "course corrects" to smooth over changes, which is why the crew of the Enterprise all ends up together despite the odds being against it (and indeed Chekov and Uhura shouldn't even be the same people, with their birthyears changed). Demora is the the same category, as her birthyear is different. Perhaps in this universe Sulu still had a one night stand. Or maybe she was a surrogate. I mean, I'm curious about Ben (Sulu's husband). What's his story?

You make me love these movies more than before, I can literally talk hours about the timeline and how it is a great addition to trek giving another take of the characters. I mean the development of Kirk? Come on! He had a harder start and even then he become than captain than we love and appreciate (most of my talk of kelvin is just Kirk sorry). Yes the movies have faults but it was my first take on trek and took me to watch TOS that become my favorite series. Thank you for doing this I really love these movies and I love that people analyze them putting aside JJ.
And Beyond is the peak of these three of course, the uniforms are pretty cool, the visuals beautiful. I really hope for another one with these actors I don't care if it's a rip off of a TOS episode I just want them.

One thing that struck me from the scene in "Man Trap" where Uhura confronts Spock on the bridge: listen to Spock's voice. Yes, his tone is very level, but there is a universe of barely restrained emotion in his voice. I hear both anger and concern trying to break through, but he's not going to let that happen.

Nick Meyer and JJ Abrams are great examples of fresh eyes bringing new life into the franchise while retaining its identity. Pegg/Lin are a great example of fans bringing the heart of what makes the franchise what it is to the fore.
However, Stuart Baird demonstrates how a newcomer can completely fail to value the universe they've been trusted with. And I'm sure there's an example within Trek, but when I think of fans failing to make the stuff they love good, I think of Ian Levine bogging Doctor Who down in eternal self-reference and hyperviolence in the 80s.
It's not so much about being fresh or familiar. It's about whether the creator is defining the franchise by its deeper meaning or by the surface trappings. Yes, Star Trek would feel incomplete without the pewpew lasers, but what are you doing with the pewpew? Are you telling a story about hope, family, equality, The Human Adventure? Or are you telling a story about people who shoot pewpew lasers? Are you filling the gaps in your encyclopedia of Federation history? Are you telling the same stories that were told 50 years ago and patting yourself on the back for being progressive by acknowledging that sometimes dark skinned people exist?
