    I love Trek games.
You're all too young to remember EGA Trek, but that was fantastic.
Also, Elite Force (+2) Bridge Commander, Armada (+2) Starfleet Command (all 4 of them) Klingon Academy, Starfleet Academy, BOTF, Klingon Honour Guard, A Final Unity, Judgement Rites, Generations, Away Team, that Trek "bro-op" game, Harbinger, Hidden Evil, Borg, Legacy, Tactical Assault, The Fallen, Dominion Wars...
I think that's all the ones I got.
What was my point with this list? I dunno. I can't remember.

"Star Trek Bridge Crew" was a also a tie-in VR game for the Kelvin Timeline and quite honestly when it came out it was insanely fun!
It started sucking when the license for the Voice Commands engine they used ran out, and you couldn't control the AI crew with voice commands anymore (which was SO MUCH FUN!) and after a while people also stopped playing it so the online co-opoption (which was also very very fun) became hard to play.
It also had insanely fun "classic" mode in which you piloted the original series Enterprise and all of the buttons were just flashing light bulbs and 60's electronics and it was so much fun trying to figure out how to do literally anything :-D
Later they also added a TNG mode but by that time almost nobody played it anymore and IIRC the voice commands died almost immediately after so it was a bit of a missed opportunity.

My sister naively got me the XBox 360 version of that game, and I agree, there is a good game struggling to get out of it but it just never quite reaches its full potential. It's not terrible, certainly not the "worst game ever" - I've played Superman 64, I _know_ what terrible looks and feels like - and as far as franchise tie-in games go, it's honestly one of the better ones out there. I've definitely played worse, and yea I did find some ... interesting bugs in the game but nothing that wasn't corrected by reloading a checkpoint, and the devs were kind enough to make the checkpoints plentiful, seemingly as a kind of apology for the rushed and buggy release.
It's not a game I see myself playing more than once, but at the same time I don't regret my time with it either. It was at least entertaining and I could see what they were trying to accomplish with it.

  • @EmceeFrodis

Very much enjoyed this. One thing you did miss mentioning was the young adult Starfleet Academy books that came out memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/Starfleet_Academy_(2010s_book_series) Although you did cover basically everything else. Those are also not the greatest of literature. But they do give a better insight into things like Gaila and the formation of Spock and Uhura's relationship. Probably the weirdest thing is how they broke their backs to not have Spock and Kirk meet, since that wasn't supposed to happen until the movie.
Being both a fan of Star Trek and Star Wars, I've seen how JJ Abrams reacts to tie-in media and I think he REALLY dislikes it. I hate sounding so cynical, but I think it's because he's not a very good team player and doesn't like to be hampered down by other people's ideas and having to fit them into his vision. With Star Trek, I think they were willing to put off on tie-in media, while with Star Wars he just ignored what happened in their tie-in media (meaning the Lucasfilm Story Group had to scramble to figure out how it all fit together).
And I think this was to the detriment of this series. The way you keep people engaged is by giving them content. You can't reasonably come up with a new movie every few months or even every year, so you've got to keep them engaged with things like the comics and books. I think the Star Trek Ongoing (in particularly Boldly Go) is some of the best tie-in media I've read.

I loved the Countdown comic, and read it (several few too many times lol) before watching 2009 and found it really helped me appreciate the story of the movie more, as I found it gave me a deeper understanding of the back story. True story, Mom and I watched 2009 together and afterwards she said “I really enjoyed that, but I think I must have missed some as I don’t understand why it really happened.” So I gave her the comic and afterwards she said “NOW I get it!”
We both agree that the countdown book would have made an excellent movie in its own right and would perhaps have helped eased the fans into the Kelvin timeline as it would have been Picard handing the baton to Kirk, almost mirroring (quite beautifully) the events of “Generations” where the roles were reversed.
Edit - Regarding the game, I actually enjoyed it and was glad of having a Trek game on console other than Legacy (which is AMAZING) I thought the graphics were great, and was so impressed the original cast were back to voice it (it took me back to memories of the 25th anniversary and Unity games on PC - yay! Nostalgia!) although for a shooter it did became repetitive towards the end and some of the camera angles felt a little janky, especially in corners or tight areas.

I honestly can't recall many Star Trek video games that were any good. The only one I ever enjoyed to any level was Star Trek: Conquest and that only lasted so long before it ran out of gas. I have never played the one mentioned in this video. For me the worst of all time is the tailor trash of Star Trek: Encounters. I had hopes for it and in every aspect it was a massive let down.

    • @Dargonhuman
      @Dargonhuman 3 роки тому

Star Trek games in general are more miss than hit, and movie/franchise tie-ins have an even worse track record but the Trek game being discussed in this video is actually pretty decent, especially in comparison to the average Star Trek and/or tie-in game. It's not going to knock your socks off or anything, but it's reputation of being the "worst game of all time" is completely undeserved. There is quite a bit of fun to be had if you're patient and don't mind reloading checkpoints because of bugs and glitches - on the upside to that, the checkpoints are pretty generous and you'll only lose about half an hour of progress at most when you do need to reload.
If you're a fan of third person shooters like Mass Effect, Gears of War, Resident Evil 4 and so on, you'll likely have a pretty good time with it. Hell, I'm not even really into those kinds of games and I have a very low threshold of tolerance for bad games and I managed to get all the way to the end because I genuinely wanted to see how the story finished.

I remember encountering a few bugs and glitches too, but like you said, nothing really game breaking and most of them were easily corrected with a quick checkpoint reset but since the game is pretty generous with the checkpoints it's not like I lost hours of gameplay.

14:37 Could you please make a video on the visual similarities between Mass Effect and Star Trek Discovery? :)
Actually, Mass Effect would be worth a video on how it approaches secual orientation and identity, especially with the Asari, wouldn't it? :)

Because of the atrocities committed in the last movie massive policy changes have been implemented across Starfleet. A civilian government overseer has been assigned to every ship. Reporters are now onboard and they have access and clearance to everything and the ships weapons have been locked. They can only be unlocked by clearance from Starfleet Command!
The DEFUND STARFLEET movement has gotten a lot of traction!

@@Redrally but my main plot point is that in the Kelvin universe civilians have grown sick of Starfleet and believe they’ve become to militarized and too powerful.

...So... After watching this I'm still not sure where the Metroid Prime inspiration was? (How would you even do a Trek Metroidvania? ...Actually, no, I can see it working if you strand most of a crew and then let you swap between them as you find them, each with their own unique abilities that let them get past certain obstacles. I think there's been a couple of multiple protagonist games in that genre - maybe with a c64/NES TMNT style health system so each has their own separate health bar but you can swap between them at any point?)

With the right story, a Star Trek Metroidvania game would be crazy awesome.

If another Trek game comes out it will undoubtably be an online experience where you have to deal with other players. I hate that shit. Just give me an old fashioned single player open universe type of game. Why does every Trek game have to be multiplayer? I hate other people.

Sounds like you REALLY liked Elite Force 2? 😏 I’d be interested in a review of it, if you want to record one. I don’t expect it would be worth me contributing more than a little consultation, my views on parts of the game I remember for example, but I’d be happy to do that! 😊
