I wish there were more wrenches like us. On my own adventure of starting my own shop as well as of November '13 and I just crested the $65,000 mark in tools and storage myself. Not including equipment and such, just the tools in my box and two carts. Keep the faith, keep up the hard work, and keep protecting that investment! It is our livelihood every day and its not a cheap way to make a living.
Side note... I have been recently "renovating" my box and carts to maximize space and versatility. You're setup has given me some very good ideas, so a much appreciative thank you! :-)

I wish I could keep my stuff that clean. I end up running tools over, sliding on the floor, always arcing on batteries, pipe wrenches/extensions, drop drills and impacts from ladders, drop my electric impacts and drills in coolant. If the sockets don't fit I grind them down, use all my tools the wrong way -sockets for seal driving - punching - wedging, use ratchets as pry bars, 1/2 inch ratchets for hammers, hit wrenches with hammers etc. Pretty much abuse the shit out of all my stuff and if I'm tired at the end of the day, I take one arm and plow them all into the top drawer and leave. You know, ....exactly like this guy.

You must be a man who actually, get's shit done. I applaud you for one, my good fellow. I too have been know to rapidly modify my tools with an angle grinder or belt sander, just to get the next bit of work done.

If you have to keep reiterating how much you use your tools, you probably don't. My tools get used everyday and they will never look brand new again, no matter how hard I clean them.

Patrick McClure I kind of disagree, the Mac box makes organizing the tools much easier with the deeper/bigger drawers versus my old HF box. Remember I said "kind of..." The HF box is 100% best bang for your buck. But, the Mac box is so much nicer.

The guy's got like $40k in tools. I can't believe you are giving him shit for keeping his small fortune clean. There's nothing wrong with cleaning tools, especially when they get covered in grease and oil at the end of the day.

    • @beeceee151
      @beeceee151 9 років тому

I disagree. I heard half of this before turning it off. This is for OCD people that may be on or do not like the side-effects of the meds. Find another doctor. As for Mac tools and your collection (I understand some people "collect" tools just because) I find fascinating. Stop the OCD thing and get some good care and start fixing shit with that awesome box.

    • @howardrya2
      @howardrya2 9 років тому

The guy works on Lamborghinis in his garage. He does plenty of work on cars. Would you rather have a mechanic that does a shit job on your car, doesn't clean anything, throws things together, and doesn't care about what he's doing (and wind up with a car that would likely break again because it wasn't repaired correctly), or use a mechanic like John who has an extreme attention to detail, and cares about what he does? He takes pride in his work and his tools. I do the same. Everyone now a days just doesn't give a shit. Forget the OCD. What does your toolbox look like? I'm dying to know. It better look like a filthy mess with badly any tools in from the way you're talking shit.

My brother owns a Macsimizer, bright red ,it is stone cold filled. He works mostly with omc and bombardier engines. Years ago I worked on omc small outboards...I had a small box with mostly snap on tools. My brother was meticulous with repair or rebuilds he worked on.. Yes he wiped down his tools and had a certain spot for everything . But hey... if he is working on Lamborghinis that's his problem when the client wants his machine at a certain
time and the mechanic is fucking around with his tools...I like the dude's Macsimezer and set up. His mental health is his own deal but he felt free to share...Best wishes to all of you hard working mechanics that make to world go 'round.

Pretty nice. I like the box. I don't have nearly that many tools and I don't even have a big box, but I do keep what I have clean. I'll often times clean them at the end of the day and reorganize as needed. I've seen boxes that look like people just threw the tools in from across the room. It takes them 10x longer to find something.

  • @benthiesing

Beautiful tools and there is nothing wrong with keeping your tools clean . I wouldn't alter that expensive tool box. The stainless should be easier to clean. They sell one inch thick black rubber mats used in weight lifting rooms could be used to cover the top and prevent the top from getting dented. One thing is for sure your mac guy must love you. He should give you a bottle for Christmas.

That's a nice come up from the harbor freight setup you had before..real crispy! Couple of things...That upper left drawer would be a great spot for your pliers with a pliers rack running along the length of the drawer. I just did mine because I had a shallow middle drawer with pliers everywhere laying around. As far as the stainless top go with rhino lining, it has a softer, glossy finish that will compliment your drawer pulls better. Line-x has more of a gritty matte finish to it. Then later on get yourself a hutch and side cabinet for all of your blow mold cases, and you'll free up tons of space for more tools.
I have the triple bank tech series in lime green with the black drawer handles. When I got my stainless top the first thing I did was take it to ziebart and have them shoot it with a few coats of rhino. Looks way better in black and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I had to modify my hutch as well because it came with a chrome moulding strip across the front that didn't go with the color scheme either..Heat gun made quick work of that though. My next upgrade will be the side cabinet for cases and such. Looking real good man, nevermind the haters talking mess about how clean you keep your tools-Keep on slingin that chrome brother!

Dave G especially stuff like the prybars. the fucking prying ends dont have a mark on them. any prybars ive ever bought snap on mac matco mayhew look beat up after the first use. there is no way to stop the ends fro getting marred up if u use them. also the white makita set. come on what do u do wash your hands every time u go to puck tgem up during a job. that white is not going to look brand new if they were used everyday. i dont care who u are. everone drops or scratches drills and impacts i tight spots and there is not a mark on them fuckin things

Boy who would guess these guys would be the uptight type. Haha. I also work in a crazy busy shop ans also buy the best & keep them crazy organized. But if you say they don't get scratched, and worry about the shine then you can't be using them in a production setting or working commision. Maybe hourly and milking the clock. But whatever, what a ridiculous argument.

  • @Someoldguy69

So many people bitching about how clean his tools look, but that tells me that this man takes pride in his tools which he has obviously invested a lot of money on. If he is willing to take that much pride in his tools? Then you can bet he takes pride in his work! I would much rather have someone work on my car who is OCD with their tools than someone who doesn't give a shit! Plus I can relate to this. I'm just a simple DIYer and I am completely OCD about my tools!

I'm a backyard mechanic, meaning I work on my two mowers, mine and my wife's dirt bikes, our four wheeler, both our vehicles, small engine machines like blowers and weed eaters, plus anything my friends ask for help on. Just with that little bit of work, my tools look very used. I even tried to clean and shine them really well after watching this video. Nope, still look used.
Point is, these tools don't get used. Look at the sockets and ratchets. Simply sliding a socket on the ratchet creates wear marks, rubbing some of the finish off. None of his are like that. Screwdrivers are the same way. Once used, a little bit of the finish rubs off.
As a backyard "mechanic", I use HF, Craftsman, Stanley and Husky, just like a lot of his tools. I know what they look like after being used, and they don't look like his.

how you treat your tools varies from mechanic to mechanic, some guys keep their boxes and stuff ultra clean and organzied, other guys open a drawer and its just a huge junk drawer with random sockets and ratchets mixed in, black from oil grease and dirt. i try to keep my tools clean because of the money i've spent on them, hell i even wax my toolbox occasionally. however that doesn't mean i dont wrench, because i just dont like to see my shit dirty

OK a couple of thoughts: break down all those kits and keep the parts you use most in your box. Build you a shelf and store the case on it. You can obviously afford to do this. Two f- Mac tool boxes, buy vidmars storage cabs. Three Proto is Stanley's premium tool line they make the ASD ratcheting wrenches. You should get those. Four- SK kicks the crap out of Mac well their new stuff does. Every mechanic needs their 15 inch 1/2 drive 40 tooth ratchet. It is basicly a mace. 5) you do not need all those repeat socket sets. I mean you got several 3/8 sets of 12 and 6 points. Pick your favorite and kick the rest out. 6) take everything you never use out of your main box. If you did that you would not hear near as much grief about not using your tools. Which I can tell that many of your tools are not well used. The chrome is still flawless. Stow that crap in a cabinet or a tool crib. Finally if you use something less than twice per year you don't need to upgrade it. You don't even really need it in your box. If you do these thing you'll be suprised how much room youll have in that box.
BTW I have all SK base kit, 1/4,3/8,1/2 drive metric and standard socket sets. Mm and saw Wrench's. Various ratchets and ratchet wrenches. Most of my tools are made in USA. At least 300 pieces us made out of around 500 total pieces.

Just for info, The 100 tooth ratchets are also sold under the Matco and Cornwell brands too. Don't remember who exactly makes them though. I have the older Cornwell 72 tooth version and they are pretty solid. Great box!!

When it comes to tools my philosophy is: I rather have it and not need it instead of need it and not have it. You can never have enough tools. There is always some new fastening device that you don't have the tool for which causes you to delay your repair project. I hate that.

It seems like you've put a lot of time and money into your tools. Theyre nicely organized, but you should have done yourself a favor and bought all snap on tools. U cant go wrong , snap on is the best . period

Just watched your video on your box. very sharp man. but if you do have ocd you wouldn't want to see my box. It's a twenty year old mac box with tools just piled in. I do have a pliers drawer and a screwdriver drawer but it's pretty disheveled looking. Again though yours looks awesome.

I think the craftsman sockets that dont have the laser etching are better

just curious. why didnt you go with all mac tools sockets rather than harbor freight and craftsman?

hows the white holding up on your toolbox? I just recently traded in my tool box for a white one with chrome trim rather than black. different brand. But i was just wondering in real life how does the white paint look and stand up to shop environment.

Unless you wipe down your box every couple of days, white will look dirty as hell, the dark blue or red colors you can let go for a while. Looks nice but gotta keep it clean.

all tool manufacturers' chrome sockets are made in the same place. mac tool boxes are made in the same place as matco and extreme tools

Very nice sir! Nicest box/tool set vid I've seen thus far!and I've seen quite a few.
The keeping tools in the boxes does waste space but it sure makes organizing and keeping track of tools a breeze...
See a lot of haters in the comments lol. It's whatever. Keep up the good work and positive attitude!

Did you choose mac more for the tools or for the dealer? What I mean is most mechanics I know tend to buy from the truck with the driver who they like the most other than being big on a few tools from each

I like snap on tools and I've used a very small bit of Mac tools but I just like haveing a variety of brand because they are all good for something.I personally and a huge fan of gearwrench because it's fairly inexpensive but will go toe to toe with snap on stuff.know for pliers knipex is deffinatly the shit, and snap on makes about the nicest hammers I've ever seen.each company is better at making some things than others so I try to keep a variety

I think the point is that all the major tool manufacturers are about the same they all have good and bad products. its down to what you prefer.

kenny I do too. I clean mine off everyday before I leave the shop. Don’t let anyone borrow your tools that doesn’t take care of their own and yours will look great for a long time. The key is do use starting fluid or parts cleaner except on sockets lol. Use tub o towels or mule wipes on your ratchets, cordless tools or any comfort grip then a clean rag to dry em
