I learned this exercise tomorrow and I was a better bassist yesterday.
thanks its a nice exercice to do. i'm ashamed to say that i lack such foundation on my bass playing. i've been playing for nearly 10 years, i can sight read most of the time and i'm a decent slapper ( marcus miller stuff pose no problem to me but Alain caron and wooten, well its another story) most of the time if i'm just doing some support bass its not a problem but each time i have to solo, it really show my biggest weakness and i usually just play in a few position where i'm confortable and jumping accross the neck make me feel lost. i remember that i started to do thing kind of exercise years ago for a few month and i just gradually stopped doing them. so this is a nice reminder that you should never stop praticing scale and fretboard as it can be easily forgotten in just a year.
Easily forgotten for sure. Keep your bass out of the case. Even if you only pick it up for a couple moments out of the week, it compounds.

The main problem is the fact that I cannot afford such a bass like the one you have. And everybody knows that a good instrument has to not sound beautiful, but playability is the most important factor, specially for beginners. And if you want to succeed in playing any instrument, you have to make great investment. And almost no one can spend so much money.
I definitely did not start on this instrument. Progress can be made on cheap instruments. Careers can be built with squires.
