  • A/C clutch replacement on a 2006 Chevy Impala. Was blowing fuses
    repeatedly and all wiring was checked and in good shape.
    Hardest park was removing the inner snap ring with my Cheap snap ring pliers. A/C has worked perfectly since replacing the Clutch ($80)
    Saved a ton of Money as repair shops want to replace entire Compressor .

    Just followed this for my 2006 Impala. This is the best video and easiest to follow by far. A couple other things if anybody else sees my comment... make sure you have snap ring pliers that can do up to 2" rings. I had a cheap set that were too small and had to buy a larger set to get the largest ring back on. Also, several of the plastic retainers in my wheel well broke during removal. Might be a good idea to get some extra ahead of time.

    Really appreciate you doing the step by step in this video with the compressor still in the car. I'm going to be doing this exact job on 3.9L monte carlo tomorrow. On mine the clutch stopped engaging and at first I thought I just had a burnt pigtail at the connection to the clutch coil but when I changed it then it started blowing fuses immediately when I turned the air on. So I checked the coil and it was only showing about 2.14 ohms and its supposed to be around 3.5 ohms on the meter so I ordered the new one and it came today. I got mine off rock auto and it was about $63 plus tax and shipping which ended up being about $72 delivered.

    Thank you very much. This is a far more complete explanation than any others I have seen. Going to give this a shot next weekend.

    Loved the Fiero intro.
    Also, there's a spec for the gap on the clutch, it doesn't matter if you kept track of the shims or not, what matters is you measure the gap and use whatever shims get it in spec.

    Hi Joesph!
    Thanks for watching my video.
    The hardest part was getting the 2nd snap ring off as I couldn’t get good light & the snap ring pliers in there and see what I was doing at the same time.
    Maybe I should of done it in the driveway instead !
    Please share and subscribe if you haven’t done it already.
    Good Luck!

    Ours didn't slide right off. We had to rent a Pulley Puller kit from the car parts store. That was the key to getting the job done.

    Thanks for the video, my impala has become a money pit lol. I need to do this and might swap out the water pump and belt while I am at it, got a slow coolant leak somewhere.

    What year is your impala? I have only seen the compressor and clutch sold together. I’ve been unable to find the clutch sold separately for mine.

      76Monteman thanks. That’s the same year I have. I found the same part number as you had used. I had a couple websites say it was the correct part, and a couple say it wouldn’t fit. Thanks for the help!

      You said you put a compressor in. Did you vacuum down the system and recharge it? It won't work if you don't.

    Hey, thanks man that was a great instructional video. I do have a question though, did you use the fancy triangular clutch removal tool to hold the clutch while you loosened/tightened the center bolt or did use use some other method?

    I can't get the center bolt loose because I can't hold the clutch from spinning. Can you please tell us what you used to hold the clutch while loosening and tightening the center bolt?

    • @76Monteman
      @76Monteman  2 роки тому +1

      I left the Belt on and was able to loosen the bolt.
      Once new clutch was on I tightened bolt as much as possible then put belt on and finished torquing it down

      I would have to guess that the seal on the compressor shaft has failed.
      I would replace the compressor and check out Chris fix’s channel on how to recharge the system.
      All gauges and vacuum pump can be borrowed from advance or auto zone.

      The bolt that holds the clutch on should have some blue loctite on it before tightening the bolt

    How did you just pull off the cover? I can't remove mine. I've tried prying and even hammering. Didn't move at all. :(

    • @76Monteman
      @76Monteman  5 років тому

      If your referring to the plastic covers you need to remove the plastic clips by prying up center pin and using a trim removal tool to pull the main piece out. The center pin forces the main piece to spread and that holds the panel in place

      Mine just pulled right off after I removed the bolt.
      Try some rust penetrant.
      Hopefully that will do the trick.

      I know this is 4 years old but I had the same problem. What I did was use a metal drywall knife between the cover and pulley just to give it a little gap (very small). Then i put a screw driver aimed towards the middle and hammered it all the way to the center (or as close as i could get). I then opened the hood and while the other screwdriver was still in I hammered a 2nd screwdriver straight down. Then removed the ... mud plastic cover thing from front below bumper (have fun with this one) and did the same thing with a 3rd screwdriver. It then started to wedge loose. Now im stuck on a seized pulley.
      Edit.
      This job was a nightmare. I had to use a flat end crowbar wedging one side of the pully and hammering from the opposite side backside to get the pully off. End up breaking the tip off where the pully slides on (right in the gap where the ring goes). At least getting it on was super easy and took me only 10 minutes.
