It also gives you a better hold if your fit is tight to begin with, since it expands the wood and forms to the inside of the axe head. Also stops water ingress entirely. Just sealing the ends doesn’t, saturating with diluted linseed oil for a month does

@@whirled_peasI was taught to glue the wedges in, then when it's dried cut the handle just above flush and feed it oil every day for a week or so

You're supposed to hit the axe handle in from the bottom of the axe. Use a rubber mallet and the downforce will push the axe head on
