We're excited to release the original demo for "Sailing" recorded in 1979, utilizing the 3M Digital Recording System, making it one of the first digitally recorded songs to chart. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 30, 1980. The song won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year, and helped Cross win the Best New Artist award. Produced by Michael Omartian, it features Tommy Taylor on drums, Andy Salmon on bass, Rob Meurer on electric piano, and Victor Feldman on percussion. In 1980, Sailing was released as a single in Latin America under the translated (en español) title "Navegando".
On the Howard Stern radio show, Cross explained that sailing with his friend got him away from the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. Cross said that if the guy had taken him bowling and he enjoyed it, the song could have become "Bowling."
The "Sailing" demo is being released alongside a new cover of the song by Benny Sings. Watch the video for Benny's version here: • Benny Sings - Sailing ...

LYRICS
Well, it's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
Soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me?
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
[Instrumental Bridge]
Well, it's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Really, believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more.
When this song came out, Christopher Cross was my backyard neighbor. He found a child-sized rocking chair in his house when he moved in, and gave it to my infant daughter. We still have that sweet little chair. Thank you for posting this and bringing back such fond memories.
That’s a wonderful memory! Thanks for sharing.
He always seemed like a really cool and chill dude. Too bad more celebrities cannot be as humble as him.
While picking up trash at a nature park I found a Christopher Cross CD on the ground. Took it with me and played on my rental car's CD player. Had never heard of him. Enjoyed "Sailing" so much, played it over and over. When I returned the car, I left the CD in the player, so the next person could enjoy it.
When this song came out it captured people from all over the world. I was in need of love, guidance, inspiration and peace. This song gave me everything and more. I had the honor of meeting Chris in person. He was awesome. He always made time for his fans. He literally listens when you speak to him. He’s a rare gem in that industry, in the world. Music has always been my comfort and my friend. Being a kid alone in the world was difficult enough. This song helped me through the worst of times. Thank you Chris for your music, your attention and just right out being a great person to many. Blessings 🙏🏼💙🌺
What a lovely comment! I feel the same way about music as you do. Without music, I truly believe I would've taken myself out years ago. It's brought me through so much. I suffer with severe depression and social anxiety, and music has been such an outlet and escape for me. I play guitar and I like to sing, and I share whatever talent with elderly people at nursing homes. Those people are so lonely there, and whatever family they've got never comes around them. I can totally relate to that, so I try to bring them a little joy and entertainment through music.
1980… Was 18 and working at a dream job in college, at Disney World. Hearing Sailing, I was an instant fan. This song puts me at peace and settles my soul. I have seen Chris in concert 3 times over the years and have tickets to enjoy his music and talent again this month. I love hearing the demo track and how it all began. Thank you Mr. Cross for the joy your music brings to the world. ❤
I love the relaxed and laid back vocal of this demo so much. Also, the clever vocal double tracking on the line "just a dream and the wind to carry me....." Thanks for posting!
Hey, Chris! The internet has provided something incredible that you might not have even imagined at the time: that the sound of your voice would be so important, capable of taking us back to our past and impacting us,
about people's lives all over the world and now you can hear it directly from us...how special, my dear 🥺 Brazil 🇧🇷 -

Absolutely fantastic Chris... Thank you for sharing this masterpiece with all of us! The world needs more love
Oui♥️🤗 le Monde
When this song came out in 1980, I was 21 and knew everything and preferred Talking Heads, Pretenders, etc to this song. Now that I'm older (and hopefully humbler than my younger version) I really appreciate the beauty and mastery of this song.
Way back in 1980 I was staying with a cousin and her husband Bob in Italy. Bob was a big sailor and played this song full blast on a drive in his car. I loved it instantly. And then he played Ride Like the Wind and the rest of the album. Bought it as soon as I got home and play it regularly. Priceless!! keith
All time fav!
I love this song with all my heart soul and might.
This was my favorite song at 16 yrs old, and my first song I taught myself meditation. I still love this song. Thank you Chris
I really loved the synth solo in the middle, greetings from Ecuador
Chris is a rare soul indeed. He treats his fans like friends. Has no pretension about him and lets his music speak for itself. So glad he won all those Grammy's. I feel like he's not done yet. He trended on X a few days ago and there is definitely a resurgence in the air. He is just the right person to bring classic songwriting back to the airwaves and I wish him the very best, just you wait and see.
What a genius Cris, beautiful song, many romantic memories, the best times😊❤🇦🇷
One of my favorite songs ever… the demo version is amazing! Thank you for sharing your gift of music with all of us! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
The only song that brings tears to my eyes , absolutely love this song so much , it takes me somewhere
This song always makes me cry. It did back then and it still does now. Christopher I love your soul man. ❤️🥹
One the most beautiful songs ever written .Christopher Cross, You are so underrated. You have an amazing flawless voice .
I'm so happy to hear the demo version! Thank you so much for uploading this video💐🎤👑👍👏👏👏
Good demo, Chris & Co. The elements were already there. I didn't know that the band's debut was one of the first digital recordings. (I think fellow label mates, Fleetwood Mac's Tusk (released around the same time in 1979) holds that distinction, as well.) That further explains why the production of that 1979 album is so distinctive, clear, and full of depth (setting the template for the Adult Contemporary style), esp. the 21st Century Japanese remastered edition. Thanks, Man. Pop 'N' Roll!
Man that takes me back too a time I would Love to go back too. GREAT SONG and ALBULM CHRIS!!!
Thanks for posting the demo!! I love this song, and I really enjoy hearing demos.
Man you laid it down when you did this one. I am hypnotized. No wonder you got a record deal so quick! I would love to hear more of these great demos... -Jon in Inglewood CA
IMHO Some songs are best left to be forgotten. The NYT lead me to reminisce of the 1970's without any writers that experienced attending any shows at the Electric Factory, Spectrum, Emerald City, Latin Casino, Filmore East, Main Point, or The Tower. Best of luck to you and Happy Holidays. Punks Not Dead! 😍
Chris you made an eternal masterpiece 💚
Wow! I love hearing raw demos that turn out to be masterpieces. Thanks for sharing!
Nunca pero nunca me voy a cansar de esta canción❤🌹
Every song has its time and place. When this one arrives, it puts your heart at peace. Nice to know that vibe was right there from the start. Thanks for sharing, sir.
This is one of my (and millions of other people's) favorite songs of all time. This is my GO TO song when the world is upside down and I need to feel grounded. I have never seen a video that does the song justice. There is so much visualisation here that people who love being on water and others that are transfixed by it from the shore like searching for answers in embers.... so many people relate to this song in so many different ways.... just a thought... with this world now of visual expansion with drones and other technology... I would love to see something worthy of .... and as perfect as this song.
Perfect combination with the essential elements of harmony, melody and lyrics. The beautiful song always reminds me of smooth sailing with friends.
I’m lucky to have this masterpiece❤👏🏼❤️👏🏼❤️💎!!! I’m ever love this record❤️!
Thank you for sharing your divine gift of music and voice with the world. This song captures everything that is beautiful in sound. Harmony. Musicianship. Melody. Thank you. 🙏🏾
I never get enough of this beautiful song.❤
This is muh favorite version.
One of the best songs ever. As a former sailor, I appreciate it all the more.
And to think that "video killed the radio star". What an absolute shame. We are privileged to have all that was released before (E)M(p)T(y)V ruined music. Christopher Cross, you are very gifted/talented, and your creations are a treasure! Thank you so much for sharing them with us. 🎶❤
Have always loved this song. Feels so calming. Makes me want to close my eyes, inhale and exhale deeply and believe everything is going to be ok. Had it on cassette tape. Cool to hear it's original version!
Me encanta esta melodia .Saludos de Mexico .Gracias
Fantastic memories this song brings! Loved it then…LOVE IT NOW! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you! 😇🙏😇

Good music Always brings me peace😊
Oh my goodness, what a time to be alive. This is epic wow
YEEEEEESSSSS!!!! I’ve been waiting for all of the demos and outtakes for this album!
This is beautiful. The synth solo, chugging non stop acoustic, the smooth but leading in the front bass guitar, and of course the vocals...
Your the best Chris🤗🤗
Beautiful song. From Argentina with love...
This was a cool look into this song, I like the synth part compared to the finished version having piano, although that part is beautiful as well. Great stuff
It's nice but the piano break is one of my all time favorites so I'm glad that was used.
Thanks for uploading this. Please re-upload "I will take you forever" with Frances Ruffle again in good quality video. Thanks again.
Beautiful and tranquil. True art. If the demo were my first hearing, I wouldn’t think it could be improved on. It shows the genius of great production.
I had the wonderful privilege to see your show in 2021, and when you got to "Sailing," I just shut my eyes and took in the music. It's a beautiful song, and the demo sounds great! Please, if you have any more demos, I hope you're able to upload them.
This song came out when by then boyfriend, now husband, took me sailing. Love this song!

This song is amazing. I love it. Even the demo is beautiful. ❤
I am not sure if there is such an album, but if not, I'd love for Christopher Cross to release a deluxe version of his debut album. Maybe a double disc/vinyl set, including the original release remastered, and a second disc full of demos and outtakes. That would rock!
I just love this. The feelings. Perfect. Thank you ❤️
Este es uno de mis recuerdos de mi infancia y ahora mela gozo
What a Jewel... Thanks for Everythin!
great vocals from Chris,
This song influenced my dad (RIP) to buy his first sailboat. And second. And third.

Wowww 😌🎶
Aunque no sea la versión original, pero muy bien realizada no deja de ser una obra de arte de las nunca volveremos a disfrutar debido a que la música actual y los músicos se están adaptando a los gustos actuales
Radio version made even better under the production talents of the awesome Michael Omartian.
