*Who is listening to this masterpiece in 2024?... They just started playing it on an ad here in Australia. Still such a great song, and it took me right back. Amazing song.*
Makes me think of my big brother who passed in 2016 from cancer. He know he's sailing in the clouds right now. This song is timeless.
what a wonderful image!
I’m so sorry my brother. His spirit is free now. To sail and sail and sail
Wow! I thought I was the only one who viewed it as "sailing" through the clouds and not on the ocean! I was just a kid when this song came out, but thanks to my Mom and her love for music, I appreciated this song and it's beauty even though I was only 8 years old when it was released. Fast forward 18 years and as a 26 year old, while sitting at my Mom's funeral, the priest described my Mom's spirit "sailing' through the clouds over our rolling hills one last time on her way to heaven and I immediately thought of this song. Now 25 years later at the age of 51, hearing it still stirs my emotions and makes me miss my Mom more than any other song I hear. God bless you and your big brother! I'm sorry you lost him to that awful disease. I lost my Mom 2 weeks after her 54th birthday due to complications from Type 1 diabetes, a disease 2 of my sons now suffer from. This song will always have tremendous meaning to me, as I'm sure it will for you as well.😌
Such a beautiful song
R.i.p x
One of the greatest songs ever written and sung. Beautiful
Could t agree more!!
Absolutely!
That is true. One of the greatest ever songs sung live before 30 people on a yacht wearing captain's hats. Outstanding.
I'm 82 remember sailing playing sailing, getting into the groove 😂
Thx 🙏
This magic is 42 years old already. And this song gets more legendary as time passes by.
Hearing this song and seeing Chris is like an old friend that you haven't seen in some time. It doesn't matter how long it's been, you're just glad your paths have crossed again.
Vc disse exatamente o q pensei nesse momento, muito obrigado.....em tese gostamos de uma boa música.
Um abraço de Manaus/AM-Brasil
That’s 5 time Grammy award winner Christopher Cross to you, all respect to an amazing songwriter, performer.
This is real music. Thank you.
Absolutely is!!
No auto tune, just pure talent.
Obviously he's lost a lot of singing ability. Comes with age. Nothing wrong with acknowledging that :)
Things were pitch corrected in the 60s and 70s, just wasn’t done the same way.
@@apollozero You might want to fact check yourself
@@fr3ak1shh You might want to google: before audio tune what was done for pitch correction.
@@CrossoverClassic Hasnt lost a thing
I love Christopher Cross! I miss his genre of classic, clean music that exudes true talent. ❤️
I so agree with you
@@catherinesvbialosh7260 🥂
What an obnoxiously pretentious comment
@@DobbyTheGamer aww thank you! Cheers! 🥂
This man comes from the old school. Not defined by age, but from a time people were glued to watching great musicians performing on small pub stages and in arenas. This guy is a great guitar player too. Check out his live stuff for anyone who's interested and just becoming aware of him.
Good man for supporting Ukraine! 👍And thanks for taking me back to the late 70's great music and memories.
early 80's please.... don't make us older than we really are...
Nevertheless, this was one of my favorite songs when I was a freshman in college... those were the days when we were young and innocent!! beautiful days...
This song is just... beautiful. It's like entry music into Heaven... I don't know how else to describe it.
I agree. Words fail me
Couldn't of said it any better. Perfect!!!
Amen
It reminds me of catching a wave while out on a sail boat in the ocean without a cloud in the sky.
❤
If you have ever sailed on a sail boat manned by someone who estimated the wind and knew about sailing as I once did, this song puts you right there again and brings back the memory. Simply beautiful vocals and lyrics.
Hello Terry where are you from?
This song is a mini holiday. It figuratively takes me away every time I hear it. What a wonderful song.
My feeling exactly
Great way of putting it...
Wow, Keith Carlock on drums and Will Lee on bass. Both amazing musicians!
Will Lee used to play on the Paul Shaffer band on Letterman right?
isn’t Will Dobson also a bass player?
@@gerimayawhyte154yes
Hardest working drummer in the business.
Seems like yesterday when this song came out! Sure miss the 80s.Chris still rocks.
It seems like a long ass time ago to me to be honest. My world has changed a lot since 1979, but i still have the memories!!
Man, how much I miss good music like this!
Yep. I mean, mainstream isn't what it once was. 1970 to 2003 were the glory years. 2004 to the present is crap. Mainstream went pfft after 2003 ended and when 2004 began of course.
@@karlc2869 I would say it ended earlier-about 2000. Music went downhill pretty quickly after that.
Nope after 2003 ended, bud.
Besides, 2000-2003 was still cool. 2004-today is were it became trash.
Why do you miss it? It’s still here…always will be. Here we are, in fact ❤️
He has a very unique distinctive voice that when you hear his song plays on the radio you know it’s “Christopher Cross”. One and only. ❤❤❤
Music I grew up listening
Even for an ex hard core metal head this song was, has, and will always be a gem of a song. "Ride Like The Wind" baby!!! 🏍
gilfire41 - Do you one better, my friend. Because for a gent now in his sixth decade on earth & one who’s music ‘consumption’ or at least 85% of it is still deeply rooted in *Japanese crust/d-beat/hardcore/punk & thrash* (the other 15% of the time or so, I am groovin’ to *Fresno-Cali* legends *Redbone)* I very much appreciate artists like *Christopher Cross,* as well. Though I must confess that I don’t own any of his music either.
"Ride Like the Wind" was the song i always played in my head as I zoomed up and down my street and through our woods on my BMX bike as a kid. It was sort of like my theme song!😉👍🏼
Ex? 👎🏿
why ex?
The good thing is no matter how much music changes, songs and artist like this make a permanent mark on the calendar in time and we can simply go back to and enjoy it forever. God bless
I’ve never been sailing a day in my life. I was born and raised in a low income neighborhood, but this song has always been and will always be an absolute timeless, classic, masterpiece of musical art for me…I get transported to another space in time every time I hear it.❤
it's actually not about sailing. His father was an abusive alcoholic, and sailing is a metaphor for escaping from his father to something better
@@maestrogringoreally ?
He explains it on Howard Stern show..yes..it's a great song
When he came on the scene he blew the industry away!! Incredibly gifted musician
He's good over the radio but when MTV came along at the same time it almost ruined his career. Lets just say fans werent ready to see who theyve been listening to over the radio.
@@StreetTruckinTitan wait what do you mean just curious
@@heavyippo4544 let's just say he has the looks for radio.
@@StreetTruckinTitanHow shallow some people are. Very sad that anyone could be put off just because someone's looks don't meet their criteria.
@@sarac.3259 We as human beings judge people by their looks, it just is what it is. Sex sells. I'm not trying to be shallow, I'm just trying to be real. Your worth is judged by what you look like. Of course though, there is much more to a person than their looks, but no woman is going to agree to go on a date with a man just for the sole fact that he is a nice guy!
He doesn’t need backup singers. Everything else sounds incredible. The piano…wow!
Agree…they didn’t need to be there. He already enhances the song on his own.
I agree 100%!
Dude, you could close your eyes and you’d think this was an early performance of his. He STILL sounds the same, incredible
Right 😆
Give me a break! If he sounded like this in his early years he wouldn’t have made it on the radio😂
The drummer has a great touch.
I wonder who he is?…
@@alphabeets It's Keith Carlock. He has played with Toto and Steely Dan.
What a nice walk around from the keyboardist before heading into the song. Great sensitivity and feeling on his part at every intervention. Then there is Christopher and his eternal song. A caress to the soul. I was lucky to be there at the beginning of this greatness ... and I am lucky to still be here to prolong the joy.
Beautifully said.
Still a fantastic tune now over 40 yrs old. Brings me back to my early college days at UC Davis. Nice to see that Chris still has his chops. BTW, that’s Will Lee on bass from the old David Letterman Show band.
Keith Carlock on drums
Also from the Fab Faux!!! All A Listers
This Song is sooo Beautiful. 🥰🎶 Love the Piano Intro . . . leading into "Sailing." When I was in my early 20's, and lived with my Parents; I would lock my Bedroom Doors, turn off the Lights, then I'd lie on the Floor wearing my Headset. Only the Stereo Lights would show and I'd get so into this Song. Thanks for the memory. 🤗❤️🎙🎵💙😉👏
I was 13 years old when this song came out. I can remember saving all of my money to buy the album. Its funny that my dad was a somewhat abusive alcoholic and i just learned today what this song is about. Every time that i hear it i go sailing away. Definitely a timeless classic!
Thoughts on poodles?
❤
As a near 16 year Apple Employee, it hurts my heart to see so many people recording an event like this instead of taking it all in in the moment. Put your gawddamn phones away and watch the magic happen!
His voice sounds so calming, yet it still sounds the same as when 1st released. Brilliant
No, it doesn't. He is barely saying the lyrics, unfortunately. Doesn't even reach the higher notes of the melody. It is sad, I know, but it's true!
@@WellMefisto your allowed your opinion even though I see it as wrong
@@bryceparker9876 it's not a matter of opinion. His voice has changed, it happens! Unless you are tone-deaf and is commenting just based on hype, you would recognize that as a fact. Let this "my opinion" stuff when it really fits.
@@bryceparker9876 I love this song and I respect Chris a lot, but his voice... Oh boy😔🎸
@@WellMefisto I'm sure you do. Sure his voice has changed, it's silly not to think it hasn't, but it still resembles his early days , and unless your cc himself, I care to take my opinion over yours
Sailing while Christopher playing sailing = magical
Singing “Sailing” infront of sailors- awesome 😁⛵️🛥️🌊
He was once ALL OVER the airwaves, Award Shows and even in Movie Soundtracks, back in the day.
In an interview, Chris said this song was about painting and not sailing. He also said he was happy for people to interpret the song however it makes them happy.
This is filed under mellow AF…such a fantastic tune
Simply beautiful.
One of the best songs ever
That piano solo...delicious
He sounds Great!
Nothing soothes my soul like the hiss of the wake dancing along the waterline as the sun sparkles off the wave tops and this beautiful song playing peacefully in the cabin below!
Thank you very much Christopher Cross for this perfect gift!
And yes, Sailing really does ‘Take me Away!’❤
Can never be tired of this song
With Keith Carlock on the drums?!? Yesssssss
I love this song. It reminds me 1980, when I was only 11.
I was only 6.
Sailing takes me away .... 👁️🙏👁️
First time I heard this song .. I was young and a whole life ahead of me. Now I am 56 wish i can go back. To 1983.
I feel you …miss those times soo much
Chris is a living legend.
This Song puts always Tears to my eyes. I dont know why. I guess It’s simply the Most beautiful Song ever….
Saw him live at Pine Knob in Michigan years ago. half the crowd were up on the lawn seats 1/2 in the covered amphitheater. Its started to rain so he tells all the lawn peeps to come on in. Security was no no no no stop. So chris tells security to chill its his concert and invites every one out of the rain , and in they came. He played forever playing sailing twice. This was back in the day when you could bring coolers in. Sitting smoking a doobie sipping a cold beer while he played sailing , will never forget it.
This music was a great hit here in Brazil in 80s...
Great music. Great voice. Close your eyes. 1980 all over again.
Takes me to a very peaceful place
What a beautiful and relaxing song & the background ladies classy, beautiful and talented... and Chris's voice is still impeccable
Lol it's OK to acknowledge he's lost more than a bit of singing ability. :) comes with age not sure why so many people comment some singer 40 years later sings just as well when it's obvious he doesn't ! The backup singers add essentially zero value add but predictable "addition " nonetheless
His voice is not good at all anymore. Why can’t people be honest about that?
@@Gemmarose9012 what are yous nuts his voice sounds good
I have a special childhood memory attached to this song. Part of the soundtrack of my life.
I hear this song and my eyes literally just starts tearing up, We were leaving on the Carrier USS Forestall for the First Gulf War 1991 and this song was being played on a station i was listening too and on our cruise video they played it on our departure from Mayport...
Today i heard our favourite song on the radio
I close my eyes and saw our first hello
One of the greatest pop songs ever written and performed. If you don’t enjoy hearing this song, then pop music really isn’t your thing.
It's wonderful to hear him again. I was a huge fan 50 years ago.
What a good man, and great musician. Any interview with Christopher Cross is worth your time. Trust me, you will learn something, especially about humanity.
So glad he's doing well. Covid really afected him for a long time, but he fought back and won. Still sounds great!
I was thinking the same. Am glad to see and hear him in such good shape.
Keith Carlock and Will Lee - Jeez, utterly brilliant
Reminds me of my Husband and my Sailing days. Miss them.
Got to hang out with him and his bang after a concert in 1998 at the hotel lounge. My friend was head security so he let me in and i sat close to them as they partied. Was super cool to meet him
Incredible music then and now..
Performing that song on a boat, awesome.
Saw him perform this at the London Palladium in 1980 . . . great song and a great artist who never really got the respect he deserved.
What a tune. Beautiful songwriting and stellar musicianship.
Sometimes I think that singers who have written epic songs like this don’t truly realize the impact they have on people. This song is so wonderfully healing and yet at the same time can induce so many tears.
The great voice of Cristopher cross no auto Tone just talent
He needs auto tune nowadays.
@@Gemmarose9012 🤮🤮🤮
His voice is so soothing.
I am a 56 year old man crying right now. I want to go back !! I want a phone in the wall with a CHORD. I want to run out of gas in my 70 buick electra and have to walk in the cold for 8 miles again. I want my favorite record to wear out and sound shitty. I want to fall asleep to the needle at the end of the record forgetting to lift back home.....I want to pull out that huge poster out of an album. I want to put a book of matches under the 8track in my car to get it to play right. I want to turn on the tv and watch Adam 12, and the kroft super show, the after school special, sigmond the sea monster, Mr rogers where are you ? I miss you ! where are my bell bottoms, I want to drink soda out of a glass bottle that has pure can sugar, not corn syrup, I want to pay 15 cents for it and pull it out of the slot on the machine. I want to go to the gas station and get full service and my windshield washed. I want my banana seat on my schwinn bike. I miss my bigwheel. I want to go to a rollar skating rink and its packed playing this song. I want to hear this music on a vaccume tube amp with altec lansing/klipschorn speakers. I want to buy a used car that does not come with cruise control and the clock as always does not work. I want a time machine to go back and stay ! God can I do this over again ? Please ? I want to feel breath taste the 70's again ! The only thing I dont want is to correct spelling or ad commas as I bleed my heart for this era.
You nailed, man.
I'm right there w you!😢
When everything was simple and made sense.... Those were the days
Ed, I simply adore what you've written. If you only knew how many times I've prayed that same prayer to God. I know He could do anything. If He should answer your prayer and not mine would you mind if I tag along? I'm not any trouble and I would be a quiet stowaway. Please God, let me go back too.
@@gravecat1902 absolutely you can :) And there is no reason he would not leave you out.. At least the God that I have in my mind would always include :)
Saw him on a small stage couple years ago. Amazing how many Great hits the man had.
Wish he would have had Keith Carlock & Will Lee then, too😅
The words haven't been invented yet
to describe this song
Christopher Cross
" Slayed " ⛵️⛵️⛵️
O cara é atemporal !!!! Por isso ke só escuto anos 80 !!!! Musicas 2023 to fora !!!! Fico nos 80 mesmo...abraços
Who remembers seeing Christopher Cross performing on Solid Gold (late 70’s early 80’s)?
Anytime I just need to relax and chill, I put this song on.
The backup singers are so beautiful.
I suffer from depression and im in a funk rigjt now with it. However music takes away the pain especially songs like this its so calming for the soul
Love this song so much
Got that goosebump moment when the guitar started
When I first heard this song I was IMMEDIATELY caught up into a euphoric state of being & this was when I was HEAVILY into Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Hip-Hop & R&B!
Hey, did anyone see when Chris began playing & that dude walked past the stage, how annoyed Chris became?
It seemed to throw him off a bit after that, but when the ladies joined him on stage he seemed to relax somewhat, but I think his vibe was blown!!!
Some performers don’t like a lot of extra movement around them during their performances, because it can be a distraction! I wonder if he said something to that dude afterwards!!!
Oh he still sounds like he did way back when…awesome song 🎶
One of my all time favorite song me and my mom seen Christopher cross live last year September live in Las Vegas we had front row seats we had a really good time
Keith Carlock on drums. Amazing.
And Will Lee on Bass!?
Doesn’t get any better than Keith!
40+ years and still sounding GREAT
"Sailing....takes me away to where I've always heard it could be"....still makes me cry.....that was the 80s...to me....
This song is just perfect
This might be the most incredible beautiful magical timeless romantic song of all time!!!!! It’s breathtaking! It’s beyond perfect on every level!!! Every layer! It was written by God Himself with the arrangements and composition along with it and handed down to the everyday kid ,with the voice of a real life angel…….a kid name Chris
Still has an amazing voice.
There is something so incredibly pure about this song
Still has that voice
Reminds me of all the times me and my bf would take her catemaran around in Key West. Those were the days ….the canvas can do miracles …
Man those first drum and notes on guitar at start gives me goosebumps
Timeless
I met CC many years ago in Austin when he was still playing frat houses around U of Texas. Nicest guy ever and a superb guitarist.
Keith Carlock!? Dude is a groove machine! Let's also give it up for the drummer!
What Christopher did here was produce a piece of art for the ages. It cuts through all strife, all hurt, all pain. Its one of the most redemptive pieces of music ever produced and it affects what it describes: surrender of the self through being immersed in utter beauty. I think that this is Christopher's lived experience. Few can regift such moments for everyone else, but that is what he did through the miracle of his canvass. Thank you Christopher.
One of my favorite songs ever!!
One of the songs that'll last forever....
Fabulous!! Thank you, CC!!
Truly a musical gem of a theme. Greetings from Panama City
This man is the purest wine...
