Quilt As You Go Hexagon Quilt Tutorial
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 вер 2022
- In today's video, I show you how I am making my quilt as you go hexagon quilt. I am using fabrics with personal meaning and including lots of hand applique and hand embroidery details. This is a slow, long term project but each hexagon is a little finish and gives you that sense of achievement to keep going! Also, once you start to join them together, the quilt can finish at any size you want and you can add to it in the future too. So I think this is the perfect project for any quilter, I hope you do too! Let me know if you want to give it a go too.

Will you be making a quilt as you go hexagon quilt? Let me know!
It's a house shape and it is quilt as you go using the techniques you did today. Thanks for the inspiration.
I am thinking hard about making a nice big hexagon quilt now! :) What kind of wadding (batting) do you use? It looks very thin: did you split the layers?
Yes I will be making the quilting as you go hexagon quilt.
I love this technique. I have made a QAYG hexagon project and plan to do more. Yours is really lovely.
Absolutely!
I absolutely love your hand work! Over the years, believe it or not, people have been very negative about my handwork. I started doing a hexagon quilt years ago, and was told that I would never finish it because I was doing it by hand. Quilting by hand has been met with comments like, "You are wasting your time, you need to use a quilt machine!" Now I am much older and my hands can no longer do all of that hand quilting, but I so admire that you press on and do this. You are a true artist with you hands.
Oh Patti, I think it's terrible that people have been so negative to you, that is really unfair. Why can't people be happy for others who have found something nice to do? Thank you for watching
They were just jealous
Do not allow the negatives into your world. You do what you want to do. I thoroughly dislike people that cannot appreciate others and are always there with their negatives. Know that they probably are very unhappy in life unlike you my dear! Be happy, be well and quilt on in any way you love.
@@Mickey-jn8hz 😘
I have never felt negative for loving hand work, I too now have serious hand pain and numbness so I have to pick and choose carefully, but I let naysayers know that they are wasting their time preaching to me. Go tell it to someone who craves your attention and feedback and that is not me. I do not quilt fast, or piece or appliqué fast but I enjoy every stitch and I have lost count of the hand work I have given as gifts to family, friends and strangers and gifted to others so they can raise money at sales and such. 👏👏👏👏👏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💋💋👌👌👌👌🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Emma, Please know that what you are doing really matters. I caught your very first video by chance. After you shared how slow stitching saved your life, I began to rescue my own. Several years later, people around me are beginning to notice the subtle differences in my ability to better manage stress and anxiety. Beyond hexies I have added crocheting, cross stitching and basic gardening to my recovery process. I have shared your original video with many others that I encounter who are seeking refuge from the complexities of life. Thank you for continuing to share your art. You have really grown in your art. I always enjoy watching you share each of your whips and finished projects. Remain encouraged.
Hi Rebecca, thank you so much for sharing your personal story with me. I am so happy to hear that crafts have helped you like they help me. It's incredible how much of a difference slowing down and focusing on creating can make to life isn't it. Continue to take good care of yourself and thank you for watching and sharing my video x x
Nicely said!!
I agree!❤❤❤
I have never been a quilter, but I ADORE seeing your choices of fabrics and designs. You have such a calm manner, and your explanations are very clear. Thank you for your generous spirit!
Aww thank you Kathryn! What a lovely comment. I hope you give quilting a go one day 😊
She is a delight to listen to!
What I love about this quilt design is it is peacefully done in small amounts, not overwhelming at all. I have so many scraps of old linens. This is the perfect way to use them. So many even have scraps of embroidery already on them. I am very excited about finally getting to use them. Thank you for this wonderful video that presents itself in a very doable plan.
Thank you for such a lovely comment Rhonda, I’m so happy to hear you will
Be making one too. Have fun
My mother and grandmother left so many beautiful pieces of needle work that could be incorporated into a quilt like this. Thank you so much for teaching this 74 year old great gran a new way to use them. I am also a Jane Austin fan and avid reader. God bless you and your gift.
That will be a wonderful quilt to treasure, I hope you love making it. Thank you for watching
I'd love to make one of these for my Mum for her 90th birthday. I have 7 months to get done. ❤
Oh that would be a wonderful gift, have fun
I just discovered your channel and I absolutely LOVE it!!! Everything you do is beautiful and peaceful! I look forward to watching each and every video you made!!!
thank you! that really means a lot to me
This is too gorgeous for words and has inspired me to use all the fabrics that I have collected for a special project - previously unknown until now! I’m at a stage now where I don’t want to make a lot of quilts anymore especially since I have made a lot for family but none really for myself. However, it’s time I made some special projects for myself with a touch of nostalgia from my own childhood. I have beautiful embroidery transfers that belonged to my husband’s grandmother; she taught me how to embroider so I’m sure she will be happy. Like you, I also like the way it’s always in a state of completion - no more UFO’s in the cupboard. Thank you Emma, I’ve watched this video twice and love it. Take care 🇳🇿😀
Oh Carolyn! What a lovely comment! I’m so excited you are going to make one too! Your plan sounds wonderful. Take care, thanks for watching and happy sewing!
Emma, you are a girl after my own heart. Thnk you. x
Oh thank you so much!x
FINALLY, a way to make quilting properly portable -- and with those clips, you can bring it on a plane as well. The biggest issue I've had with quilting so far, and the reason I don't do it anymore, is that it's just not interruptable and portable enough, unlike knitting and crochet where you can pick something up and put it down, and finish small pieces in between assembling them. This idea makes quilting just as portable, simple, and quiet as knitting and crochet -- no chattering machine!
it's a great method isn't it! and very addictive!
This is absolutely beautiful Emma. I love everything about it, the fabric designs, colours and your wonderful embellishments. What a wonderful project. I look forward to updates as it grows. Thank you.
thank you Wendy, I am so happy to hear you like it. thanks for watching
Love!Love! Love!
I love this project! So beautiful! Thanks for the inspiration Emma!💟
Aww thanks so much
Hi Emma, I am so late to the party, lol...... I am going to give this a go. While I was watching I cut out my first 3 1/4 and the 4'' Hexi's, i must say I had to sit for a while and figure them out and
to cut out the templates, but I did it. Now to shop in my stash and I'm on the way. Thank You Emma you always a joy to my soul, ever so grateful. Will share when I get some done. Huge Hugs xx
So glad you are having a go, have fun!
Thanks Emma I look forward to seeing the video and have a nice Easter regards Paulinex
Thank you! You too!
Thank you Emma. What a beautiful project❣ Thanks for your instruction and inspiration🥰
Aww thank you so much Charlie! I appreciate you watching
Emma, I always find your videos so inspiring! I love your fabrics!
Aww thank you so much Laura!
Emma, thank you very much for recommending the Serious Readers light. I ordered the high def, heavyweight floor model. It arrived yesterday in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA in perfect condition. WOW!!! Huge difference in how long I can EPP, without eye fatigue. Being able to adjust the light intensity is a real game changer. I put in your "Emma20" offer code. Just like you said, they sent me their compact light for free, perfect for my sewing machine table. You're the BEST, Emma. Thank you so very much!!!! I'm so thrilled you stopped teaching and started your Vintage Sewing Box business.
Hi Norma, I am so happy you love your lights! I absolutely love mine and it has made such a big difference to me too, so it’s lovely to know you have had the same experience. Thank you so much for using my code too. Take care and happy stitching 😊🧵
I adore this!! And thank u for saying use polyester thread! I've been telling people it's better because it's stronger for years and they always argue...my reply is always "really? Because I recall the cotton thread rotted out of my grandmothers polyester pants, but the pants fabric will outlive us all! " Lol
Ps. It's also the perfect quilt project because u could just do one for a coaster, ten or 15 for a table runner or even turn it into a tote bag... This is utterly marvelous!!!
Thank you so much for such kind words! You are right about polyester, it will last longer than cotton 😊🌸
@@emmajonesvintagesewingbox I subscribed after watching a couple more videos... U have such a happy soothing voice and demeanor... I loved seeing how nice antique stores are over there too, ours usually aren't so neat, clean etc.. for instance last week I went to one and saw some embroidery pieces like that, but they were all stained... If u dye them with coffee u don't notice much, but I was amazed at how pristine things were in the shop u went to lol... Anyway, have a lovely day ☺️
I love your quilt, quilt as you go what a fantastic idea. I love the idea of it being reversible and finished as you go along. Thanks ❤️❤️
So glad you like this idea Julie, thank you for watching ❤️
I bought a hexagon template and now I definitely know what I can use them for. I really love how you create and will be trying one too. Thank you!!
I’m going to make one for each of my kids and add a bit as they both grow. 🥹🥹
I have been looking for a quilt to use as a diary quilt. And I think this will be perfect for a diary quilt. My goal for the new year is to quilt- and this is the plan! What a beautiful construction.
This would be the perfect diary quilt! I’ve been incorporating memories into it making it diary-like. Have fun making it!
Yes, I’ll be making a hexagon quilt‼️So enjoy your videos🤗🤩
Hi Emma, your work is so beautiful. Such talent, you are so inspiring! Thank you
That’s so kind, thank you Julie
I love this quilting project. I didn't realize you could quilt as you go like this. I really enjoy your channel and project ideas! You have inspired me to dig into my fabric stash 💗 Thanks Emma 💖
Oh that’s lovely to hear Beverly, thank you so much. Happy sewing
I love the soft florals and have started a collection. Now I know what to do with them when I'm ready.
Started a quilt like this in 2005 & continue to add more 😊
oh how lovely! it must hold so many memories
So lovely Emma, I even have some of my late mother's vintage transfers. The ones you used looked so familiar, and so sensible to trace the transfers so they can be repeated as often as wanted. I have other projects on the go at present, but with winter evenings approaching an ideal thing to be working on. Thank you.
I’m so glad you like this idea Mary. It’s hard to resist new projects when you have other things on the go isn’t it. Thanks for watching
Emma you make me so happy 😊. I love love love everything you do. I often have similar ideas but lack the confidence to try them. I love that you share your vulnerability, it really helps me. I love that you show us how to do things, there's your gift of teaching that is within you coming shining out with love towards us. Thankyou so much Emma for your kindness, encouragement, skills and yourself you share.
Oh what a lovely thing to say Christina, thank you so much. I understand what it’s like to be unsure and lack confidence. I’m still like that too. But I try to just focus on what I feel like making and just go for it. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I hope you can give it a go and just create from your heart ❤️
I do hand sewing and card making. Your quilt is beautiful. Yours is the perfect channel for me. Thank you 💖
Oh thank you so so much Janice! That really means a lot to me 🌸
I have never been a quilter I'm a knitter but I want to make a hexi quilt and your video has helped me decide which way I want to make my hexi quilt and I have decided to make it in the same way you have demonstrated on this video. Thank you. I look forward to watching more of your videos 😃
I am so glad you want to give it a try, thank you so much for watching. Happy stitching
Oh my, Emma, this is a fantastic project and one that I definitely want to do. I absolutely love it!! Thank you so much for once again sharing your talent and time with all of us. It is so gorgeous!!
Aww thank you Pam! I hope you give it a go and enjoy making it 😊
This would be a good way to use those vintage linens that are to precious to discard! Somewhere I have some embroidery that I cut off a pillowcase because the it was worn out but I couldn’t bear to throw out. Now I know what I can do with it!!!
This is just a beautiful way to use those precious vintage pieces that I have been saving for “ something special”! I love the way you incorporate a bit of embroidery to enhance the fabric.
Your video is relaxing to watch and I can’t wait to begin a hexie project of my own. Thank you for the inspiration and sharing your talent! Gorgeous result! Keep it growing! 💐
Thank you so much. This will be my new hobby! 👍🏼
Eureka, I am glad I found your channel!

So so beautiful, love this technique and ideas. I can't wait to start a quilt.
I love your fabric choices and the gorgeous embroidery. I think I am too old to begin one, but maybe in my next life. Karen
Emma, I love your project, especially the sweet embroidery and all the details.
Aww thank you! That’s so so kind
I'm so happy that I found your channel. I hand sew everything, and have done since I was 4. I've got about 12 hexagons Started so will definitely be making a quilt. Thankyou for a lovely episode 😊
Thank you so so much!
Love, love the quilt as you go hexagons! Tfs !
I just found you on you tube and I love your hexagons. I too love long term projects and the hexagon is so much fun. Your fabrics are beautiful. I will be watching more of your videos. Your voice is easy to listen to. God Bless you from the US❤️
Thank you Judy, it honestly means so much to me that you will be watching my videos 🌸
I'm working on a hexie quilt now. The regular way. I've got 70 hexie flowers done. I like the quilt as you go hexie blocks.
That sounds wonderful
Looks adorable! Talk about a fantastic way to use up some batting scraps.
thank you! And yes, great for batting scraps, I should have mentioned that!
Labai gražus rankų darbas. Jūs šaunuolė. 🙂 ❤
thank you!
So so pretty. I love it.
Yes! I'm going to make one. I think I'm going to add my already sewn flower hexagons in the center of some of the hexagons. But first, I think I'm going to make a table runner for spring with this method.
Oh that sounds wonderful! 🌸
Such a beautiful quilt. I can't wait to start one!
Love your fabic, it is lovely. I think the hexagon is my favorite shape, and now I also love the brick quilt. The quilt as you go is perfect for me. I like to get them done as soon as possible, so having the back, wadding, and top, done all at the same time, saves me so much time. And hand sewing clams me so much. Thank you for your video. Have a wonderful day.😊
Thank you so much!
Yes I will, I too love sewing by hand and so this is perfect! Thank you for sharing and for inspiring me x
Absolutely Lovely ! ❤
I love hand sewing its a lovely feeling I love your video
Emma - I so enjoyed your tutorial of this project. I totally agree that this is the perfect project for the same reasons you mentioned. I can't wait to get started so thanks so much for all your tips & instructions.
thank you Jacqueline, I am so happy to hear you are going to get started on one too. Have fun
I love this EPP quilt-as-you-go technique! I have to try it. I love your soft colours, Liberty prints, and vintage embroidery transfers. I love hearing you say you can make your own templates and if they get wrecked through use, you can make more! You touched a nerve because I have a pet peeve about giant packs of acrylic templates that are marketed as necessary to make an EPP quilt. They are VERY expensive! I understand that there is a convenience to the acrylic shapes that doubtless is worth it for some but I do get bothered when people assume they need an expensive set of templates (plus a pattern and paper shapes) to make a quilt. As often as I get a chance, I say that I make my own templates--just to plant that seed--and I love to hear others say it too!
I totally agree. Deborah. It's nice to have acrylics in a shape and size you are going to use a lot of, but in reality you just don't need them and it's a good way to save money by making your own. Thank you for watching
Absolutely adorable!💞
Gorgeous work. Love watching you stitch. It is so calming. Love the antique needle holder/pin cushion. Thank you for sharing your inspiration.❤️🌹❤️
Thank you so much Lena!
Love this video and I really like the fabrics you use. Some great ideas that I hope to one day try. Thank you.
This is so Beautiful, it really makes it look vintage. Thanks so much for sharing your talent with all of us. You are amazing!!! ❤
That's so kind! Thank you so much, means a lot
Magnificent piece of work
I love your fabrics❣️
I love to watch you work those tiny stitches. Love this idea and hope to start such a project soon myself, thanks Emma
Thank you Bev! I’m so happy you are going to make one too 😊
I’m starting one. I love your videos. Such good instruction and visuals too! ❤️. Thank you.
Absolutely Beautiful!
Beautiful work. Very inspiring ❤
Thank you for this quilt as you go project. I did a small one years ago but the back was all an off white I like the idea of different favorite fabric colors and putting in personal embroidery stories etc! Quilts to stop and go on as you have time for makes it fun. My husband and I are going to travel full time in the USA 🇺🇸and EPP projects like this are perfect!
Thanks for watching Linda
Absolutely beautiful. Your handwork is gorgeous.
Thank you so much.
Thank you Dee 🤗
I love the way you have put this project together, it's simple but yet stunning. I really enjoy hand sewing, I find it very therapeutic & I certainly will be having a go at this. Another lovely video Emma 🙂
Oh thank you Sharon! Such kind works. I think simple is often the best way to go isn’t it. I’m so glad you will be giving it a go. Thank you for watching
I love this quilt project. I love making crochet hexagons and now I can do quilt hexagons. It's also great for a portable project or to do with a friend. Thank you for sharing this 💕
Hi Emma, I’m feeling so lucky that I’ve come across your beautiful videos. I love the way you present the projects. I am really enjoying the way you describe the process of sewing and I can’t wait to begin a hexagon quilt. As a newcomer to hexagon patchwork I look forward to the tutorial and patterns you will be sharing with us soon.
Thank You for all the lovely inspiration and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Maria
Hi Maria, thank you ever so much for watching my video and for leaving such a lovely comment! I’m so happy to hear you will starting a hexagon project soon. Take care
This project is absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Thank you for watching Angela
Absolutely gorgeous..
Thank you so much. I will be using this technique soon. I have tried quilting before but found the process of machine stitching to not be relaxing and then trying to handle all the fabric too much 🤦♀️. I discovered that I enjoy hand piecing much more and find it as relaxing as my much loved cross stitch. Your video is lovely and clear and beautiful to watch. I can appreciate, from my flosstube recordings (which are very simple), the amount of work you put into making an episode. Thanks again. Karen x
Aww thank you so much Karen. I hope you love it when you give it a try. Lovely to hear you have a channel too, I will be sure to check it out and subscribe x
This really gets me excited Emma! I will definitely start one as my next project. I love everything about this quilt, including your lovely fabric choices.
I’m so glad you hear that Victoria! Super exciting that you will make one too! Thanks for watching
You’ve inspired me! I’ve been hoarding fat quarter bundles for an age. Now I’m going to use them!
Dear Emma. Thank you very much for your guidance. It's a gift every time you share something. You are really talented and creative.
Oh thank you for such kind words, it means a lot
Really tempted to do one too! As always it was so calming listening to you. Thank you
Thank you! I hope you do give it a go 😊
Love the quilt and the process.!
What you do is something very very special Emma. Thank you for sharing here. Mother Teresa used to say "do something beautiful for God", I think this definitely counts as something very beautiful. :)

I cannot tell you how many special fabrics I’ve collected over 50 years and now I have the perfect project for them. Handwork is the perfect meditative activity especially during these trying times. This is lovely thank you for sharing.
What a beautiful piece ❤ I don’t enjoy hand sewing, I like using my sewing machine for quilting but you make it look so easy and enjoyable ❤I’m a beginner and am intimidated by hexagons but this inspires me to try. What a gorgeous channel you are creating, so glad I found it!😊
Thank you so much! That’s so kind! I’m so glad you are here
Wow! I love it! This will be my next handwork project. I am a machine piecer and quilter during the day but I love doing handwork in the evening while I watch TV. This is perfect! You are so creative and awesome, Emma!
I’m so glad you like it Diana, it makes me happy to hear you will give it a go. Thanks so much for watching 😊
