  • #hexiform #englishpaperpiecing Today I share all of my tips for basting, sewing and removing paper shapes for English paper piecing as well as showing you how I use a sizzix die cutting machine or a Cricut Maker machine to cut my own papers. I then discuss Hexiform, a fabric stabiliser designed to be left in you EPP project (EPP without the paper!) and I tell you when I choose to use paper and when I reach for Hexiform. I like using both paper and Hexiform and I point out the benefits of both methods.

You're so special! I just ordered from your website and am so excited to start working with the hexiform! I took my 87 year old Mom to lunch yesterday & as we discussed my quilting (she can no longer quilt) I realized that she wanted to keep hand sewing. So I asked her if she was interested in me putting a kit together where she could do my hexie blocks for my quilts! And she was sooo happy! So I wanted to make it easier for her and thought of your hexiform option. This will make it sooo much easier for her. I searched all over the US trying to find it and came up with nothing. Then today I opened my utube and there you were...with options for me. Thank you sooo much! You made an 87 year old healthy woman sooo happy. My best wishes for you always!!

I used to do this, in the 70s, when this was what ‘patchwork’ meant in the UK , (we didn’t call it EPP!)and the alternative was American piecing, done by hand, running stitches, by machine if you’re very brave. The patches were made by drawing around your template and cutting out, no papers, and the seam allowances were not so accurate. This has completely changed these days of course. For EPP we made our own papers from aluminium templates, before they were popular, and a local blacksmith made our templates!
I found that I had a few old unused cheque books and the paper was perfect, especially for smaller patches, where thinner paper will do. If you have a fine pair of scissors, hold the paper against your metal template, and grip firmly as you cut around. If the scissors are fine enough, you can cut accurately to the edge of the metal. The only problem was to not pare metal off the template! Not difficult, quite quick and you can do it on your lap while hubby is watching the telly.
I made flower garden shapes, into quilts and never pressed my matches because once surrounded the patches were crisp and taught. I never used glue. Prit sticks were just appearing, nothing like u use. Needle basted, creasing the edges as I went. I used to love pulling the papers out and see the fluid fabric I’d made. But what a good idea to glue!
Hexiform looks like a thick interfacing. Love your tana lawn pieces. Beautiful!
Oh your miniature pieces. This is just gorgeous! Not sure I can still see we’ll enough to try these suggestions, or even how I used to do it, but it’s lovely to see your work, thank you.

Hi Emma I have only been using hexiform since I started following you on your you tube channel! I had not heard of it before but now I can't imagine sewing without it. I do still use paper but for small projects I love the hexiform. I enjoy embroidery as well and it is so much easier to embroider my pieces when using hexiform. I do not have machines of any kind nor a computer just this little tablet so I cut my paper or card shapes from greetings cards Christmas cards food packaging and brochures and magazines after drawing around my template with a pencil. This is very low tech and old fashioned and slow but I do it in small bursts so my accuracy is really good and I don't hurt my arthritic hands too much. I really am enjoying every different aspect of the hobby and no longer resent the time and effort needed to cut papers baste or whatever...all steps lead to the finished project! Thank you for this very good video...I love your videos and enjoy watching them over again while I work. God bless you from vera in Northern Ireland

I enjoyed that. I bought the tiny hexiform and have not decided what to do with yet, but I like that stuff. I have started a couple of cushion covers using the card (I find pound shop card is good for this) I design my shapes on the laptop, using the finest outline, print out and cut. Initially I used the glue to stabilise but started basting the fabric on, now I am going to change back over because of the great iron tip. Removing the card is not my favourite part but it does work for a lovely finish too. Thank you for putting this together, good advice and yes addictive 😁 💐

I just came across your video as I learn more about EPP. I'm not sure if it makes a difference for you, but I've heard if you curl your mat when removing the paper, the pieces will not curl as much. And what a good way for me to combine a new hobby (for me) and the arts and crafts stuff I already have. While I don't have the thick cutting dies, I have a small set of hexagon thin metal die so yay for being able to use one machine for different projects. I love your mini hexagon blocks. Now I just need to invest in a set of dies with a larger range, and smaller sizes.
Going to try to go back and watch all your videos. I love what I've seen so far, and can't wait to see what I can learn. :D

I heard you mention hexiforms on your interview with Karen Brown and I was curious what that was. Now I know I may give it a try in my next EPP project! Thank you.

Thank you for another brilliant tutorial!!! I live in Canada and I haven’t seen Hexiform here. Which is disappointing for me!!
I use paper shapes cut on my Cricket machine.
I have found using very strong magnets make the stitching much easier and my hand don’t hurt as much. So I’m able to sew for longer periods of time.
Have a wonderful day and week. Hope you are having a wonderful summer. It is very hot here in Canada.

Glad you enjoyed it. Hexiform is a handmade product by a very small family company so not widely available unfortunately but they do post overseas 😊

Awwwww. You have that Cath Kidston sewing basket. I always wanted one but the shipping and the conversion rate stopped me. This is such a great video. I’ve passed it on to girls in my circle who are hesitant to try EPP.

Thank you for this wonderful video showing us paper and hexiforms, so helpful. I popped over to your shop and ordered some hexiforms, and my first ever Liberty fabric, ohhh...can hardly wait. Not sure if they sell Liberty fabric here in Norway. Have a wonderful week 😊🌼
