- This is a noob's guide to installing/ uninstalling brake pads on a 1994 Kawasaki KLR 650. This is my first time ever doing this, so hopefully it is helpful for others who haven't done it either. During the editing, a lot of the personality of the video was lost. Lots of screw-ups, lots of messing around, and plenty of "umms" were removed. Let me know what you think, especially if I do something seriously wrong.
I got my instructions from www.klr650.marknet.us/brakepad...

Uh oh! Those are the unicorns mating in the background... that's actually how this KLR was conceived :) No just kidding, there were wind chimes outside the garage. My grandma loved wind chimes :)
Awesome video eveRide! I could do that! Glad to know it's that easy. Next time Xena needs breaks, I'm on it!
Yeah the black widow! I absolutely love the KLR though. I have an emotional attachment to this bike :)
just got my klr. it is a 96 model. love your videos. keep it up master mechanic.
Hahaha I am definitely not a master mechanic. Every time I try to "fix" something on my bike I seem to mess it up even more.
Another job well done. Keep up the good work.
Just started watching, this is fantastic. (= About to get my first Enduro soon. Your Rig is simply amazing.
Jake Eakins Thanks! Can't go wrong with a cheap and reliable dual sport :)
You are the Bomb! I laughed my a$$ off, with you, not at you bro! You sound just like me when I work on my bike, car, lawnmower, string trimmer, whatever! I talk to my self just like that, only more cuss words! Thanks for making that great video. I'm going to put brakes on my KLR.
Dude that video was awesome. Not to mention how helpful it was. You should have you own show. If you do, I wanna know where!!!
Good job. I’m off now to give it a go. Fingers crossed 🤞
Very helpful. The rear pads are almost exactly the same, except there is no little cotter key and shaft to remove. A C-clamp is real helpful in getting those calipers to spread.
Good video! You should always clean off brake parts before working on them. They will often contain asbestos dust that is really bad for your lungs. Clean them with brake cleaner, NOT compressed air. Also, I would use a dab of brake lubricant on the pin to keep them from sticking. The pin and all parts should slide freely to avoid lock-ups-- especially on the front brake.
If your pads squeal really badly you might want to try some anti-squeal lubricant on the outside of the pads where the contact the brake caliper. BTW I'm diggin' your torque wrench. I've got the same one! Ol' reliable...
Very helpful, thanks!
haha, i had a feeling i would find a video done by you on this :D
+Joseph McKeever Haha this one is old school and ghetto! How you likin' the stickers, amigo?
+eveRide ADV I never received them, when and where did you send them?
+Joseph McKeever ?! I'll send you a PM here in a minute.
Extremely helpful!
Great vid !
That was very helpfull, THANKS!!!!
@eveRideorg Funny i drive a garbage truck 4 wm and they do they squeal even when all brakes have been replaced sounds like scratching a chalk board all day long !!!
@fiishermanroly I think it was around $60 shipped... and yet they still squeal like a garbage truck! :)
oh, on cars to retract the brake piston I use wooden wedges (like you shim a door with) to help force the piston back in. tap from both sides until it is where you want it.
oh jeez heck darn with the flammable wd40 on your brake guide pin don't you know! use anti seize that is for high heat.
Well done how much did you pay for your oem brake pads?
Here in 2021 and Thanks.
At 10:40-ish where u were kinna flopping the bads talkin abt whether or not you thought your disk would fit between the pads, youre right, its not supposed to fo that. That "springy" feel u got when putting the new pads on is from the tensioner plate, which also serves and a clip on that outter pad to keep it from flopping.
I notice people mentioning pad squealing. pad squealing the the pads vibrating when being used. there is an anti squeal paste (available at auto parts stores) you can slime on the back of the pads to dampen that sound. just a thought.
That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said! That's what she said!
not flaming, but grease is grease is lubricates far better than wd-40 which is penetrating oil used to loosen bolts n such, very mild lubricant, invest in some lithium grease (manual reccomended) it will help you bike. But i think from your vids i saw you got a bike a dr400 the black widow or soemthing?
Well, yours went better than mine...
The little clip pin came out easy on mine but the big pin on my scooter is locked up solid and I can't get the old pads out. I'm soaking with liquid wrench for a day or two and may have to resort to heating the caliper to try to remove the big pin.
UG! Nothing's ever easy. -Dave, Pittsburgh PA
Im a tech and enjoy watching this. First "don't loose your nuts!" then we will just ease this out!? followed by flip this off! Oh my.... You have a torque wrench! How come you didn't use it in your 2 minuet oil change video?
+Piston Slap I'm too lazy for a torque wrench :D This was back when I lived at my grandpa's house... he has all kinds of great tools!
Noob to the ultimate sweetness!
I’d clean that pin with steel wool or gently with some fine sandpaper. Don’t SAND it just clean it.
I've used a one-handed clamp just like this one (www.screwfix.com/p/quick-action-clamp-6-152mm/57645) to push back in sticky pistons. I've found it much handier than using a C clamp....
I'm a bit disappointed...
I was wondering how a KLR can produce "Sparkling" sound......:)
KLR is kinda like a garbage truck. Big, beefy and slow! Okay, time to go put pads on my KLR!!
Is it me or I hear "Sparkling" sound???????
