I love everything about this video ❤. Your filming, narration, project and even the birds in the background! Great job 👏👏👏. Thanks so much for sharing 😊
I like how the ink and watercolor turned out overall. You did an absolutely amazing job freehand sketching the cottage without even using a ruler. No way could I have drawn all of those lines without a ruler, especially while keeping the proportions accurate. Kudos! But I do wish you had added a more true green, or darker green, like a sap green, or a hookers green, over the yellow green you used for the foliage around the cottage. It would have added some depth and shadows to the foliage, and it would also have made it look more realistic. I feel like the yellow green of the foliage clashed with the yellow orange of the cottage. While at the same time in an odd juxtaposition, the yellow in both colors made the foliage blend in with the cottage, taking away from the cottage being the focal point of the painting. But I still think you did an amazing job on this ink and watercolor.. I just think it would have been greatly improved by a darker green on the foliage. And then the foliage would have framed the cottage beautifully. Of course hindsight is 20/20, as we can always see things afterwards that we can never see in the moment. I look forward to seeing more of your paintings.
I love that yellow green so much but I do agree that sometimes I do need to add that depth but I dislike Sap green alone. I'm going to play with my paints to find a darker shade that works for me. Have a great day!
I’m terrible at finding a dark but still rich green … but happened to mix some (Sennelier) forest green, which has way too much blue alone, into the phthalo green LIGHT I’d been using. In different ratios it looks quite beautiful and you can add a touch of red to mute it as well. I’m trying your painting today … so glad to have found your channel. I love ink and wash but tend to battle with perfectionism so your paintings are perfect to set my inner artist free. Thank you!
I just found your channel and I've subscribed. ☺ I love ink and watercolour, and your little cabin is gorgeous! I like your background birdsong too. The funny thing is that I have a lot of parrots and other birds in my backyard here in Australia, and I assumed that I was listening to them - until I realised they sounded a bit different and discovered that they were yours! 😅🦜🐦
Hi, I always wonder what Australia would be like to visit, it must be so beautiful. I like to sometimes narrate the videos outside because when I'm not speaking you can hear the breeze and the birds. I'm wasn't sure if is the best sound quality but your comment leads me to believe it's okay. Thank You
You did a different work set to music and I found it both relaxing and a teaching moment! Love the musical piece. This painting was more colorful and I enjoyed watching you do this as well.
I like the use of gray markers for shadows. I usually glaze with Moonglow or Payne’s gray. But if I don’t wait for the first layer to dry, it can be a mess. A first layer of marker might be easier.
Hi Karen, I just found your channel and I've subscribed. I love pen and ink too. Your sketch turned out beautiful:). Thank you for sharing your work. I'm looking forward to see more of your videos. Gabi form Germany:)
I also am a pen and ink artist. Well that’s my favorite way to watercolor I’ve realized. I’m thankful to have found your channel. I love your sketches! Big thank you for demonstrating how to fill a fountain pen from an ink well. Very helpful.
Very nice tutorial. I wish you hadn't jump cut from your work in progress to the final version as that portion is the most interesting. I would have loved to see you add the final glaze and spatter.
Hi Karen Love your ink and watercolor sketches! I'm very new to watercolor just 7 months but really enjoying it. I have trouble with my pinks and reds such as doing a floral. These colors really seem to fall flat for me. Any tips to make pinks and reds more dynamic, varied and not so one dimensional? Thanks so much!
Hi, using a good quality paint helps because student grade paint has chalky fillers added to them. I use Opera for my pink. You could try Quinacridone red. Also placing a blue green or violet if possible next to your red will make it brighter. Hope this helps.
I always think I can’t draw, but you’re inspiring me to just go for it. I just found you and I’ve already watched two. Love the way you teach and the way you paint. One question it was my understanding alcohol ink does fade in sunlight. My little granddaughter made paintings for all her teachers using alcohol ink, so we sprayed them with a light fixative. Do you choose to use a fixative or varnished? Thanks so much.
Yes markers do fade with time so a light spray of fixative would help. And yes just go for it! Every sketch helps build your confidence! Thank you and have a great day!
Thank you! Sweet painting.❤. I am new with sketch/watercolor. I find that my Lami Safari pens become clogged or dry up quickly. Any advise on that? I don’t like the fine liners as well as fountain as they kind of skip on WC paper. I’ll definitely watch more on your channel and subscribe!
Hi, welcome! If my Lamy gets clogged I think it may be the fibers from the paper so I wipe it with a paper towel or sometimes I just lightly tap the tip on a piece of scratch paper. Could be an air pocket or like I said paper fibers. Hope this helps. Try a dip pen, I use that in other videos. Have a great day!
Just found your channel, love it! Thank you for explaining how you scale your drawings. I have a tendency to dray too big and it's so annoying. I love the Lamy pen too. I bought the Pilot Parallel Pen but I can't figure out how to refill it, they have no instructions on how to get it going with the cartridge. Thanks again!
Hi, Thank you so much! I'm not familiar with the pilot parallel pen. I'll have to look it up, It sounds interesting. Did you check on youtube for a video on how to refill?
I looked up the parallel pen and I did see someone demonstrating it in a video but I can't remember who. I definitely would like to try it. Did you figure out how to refill?
I've been enjoying the process of ink and watercolor...teaching myself, so I loved watching your video! I do have a question. What size is the nib on the Lamy Safari Pen? I would really like to give one of those a try. :)
Hi, It is a fun medium to work with and I learned a lot from UA-cam videos myself. I purchased the Lamy pen with the Extra Fine nib and I love it. It comes with water soluble ink so I purchased a ink cartridge and Noodlers waterproof ink.
I love your art and have tried my hand at a couple of them. My question is whenever I use a fine nib fountain pen for my outlines followed by using the water paints it smudges and makes a mess 😔. I always paint once the pen has totally dried but even then face this issue. Can you please give me some tips regarding this?
Hi, That's not good to hear. Make sure you are using waterproof ink( which I'm sure you are )and very fine lines. I have smudged mine when the ink is to thick or when I brush to hard when appling paint. When you are painting just lay the paint down and try not to rub the brush into your ink lines. If your still struggling then maybe do your inital sketch with micron pens and do your finishing detail lines with your dip pen. Hope this helps😉

I thought I was recording but I wasn't and I agree it is the best part. I get so into it and forget to check if I hit record. I'll do better
This is great. It helps me with perspective, thanks so much

Yesterday my Lamy was getting clogged up and I dipped the tip in my water and it worked fine so maybe that could work for you too.

I don’t use the cartridge for the Parallel pen. I eyedropper filled it with my ink of choice. So far, so good. It hasn’t leaked
