Come join me along my sketching journey. My goal is to sketch everyday for one year and to see the improvement from the practice. I've been an artist for years and it's my full time job but never really sketched. I came across Urban Sketching and fell in love and it was a challenge at first but I see my sketching getting better everyday. I will share with you some tips and tricks that have helped me to improve my daily sketches.

Paul Rubens Watercolor Paint Review with a Demo Boat Painting
Переглядів 72321 годину тому
I was asked to give Paul Rubens watercolor paint a try and a review. I really liked everything about it but I would add two of my favorite colors and then it would be perfect for my style of painting. The pigment is beautiful and it's very easy to work with. I decided to do a sketch of a boat and share my experience with the palette. It turned out nice and I enjoyed doing this video Supplies Us...

This sketch tutorial is good for a beginner who would like to try to sketch people. I like to practice faces, hands and shoes on a scratch paper first before I commit to watercolor paper with ink. It took a lot of practice and patience and there are times I want to quit but when I finally get it it feels great! Keep pushing if your a beginner and if your not and you got it down I salute you.🫡 S...

Perspective Made Easy in this Real Time Sketch Tutorial with Ink and Watercolor
Переглядів 887Місяць тому
I've been away for a bit due to my mother in laws passing. It's still raw but it has been nice to get back to sketching again. Practicing perspective is easy when you lay out the pencil work prior to starting your sketch. I used some Tombow Markers in the end that are not waterproof so below I will leave a link for those and some waterproof ones as well. I've at times thought to go back and add...

Karen, I just love all components of this painting, the pink door and those precious babies !!! You do fabulous work
I love how you said, " I'm going to pick up some 'light golden retriever'☺. Such a great reference and beautiful sketch! Pink's my favorite color too so really loving that door!☺
I'm so glad you enjoyed the sketch!!! 💕 Thank you
Beautiful free style painting! Great perspective Too! I was actually thinking the same thing about your neon lady by painting the inside of her body and leave the yellow outline. lol. Good to know you tried it ! Cheers!
Looking forward to trying that one again and doing the neon sign differently. It's a challenge.😁
Love this whole sketch! I'll be honest with you, I wasn't sure where you were going when you painted the shape of the dogs ... the color and shading are really good, but then the ink and pink paint brought them to life! Great work, Karen! 🦮🐕
It's always nice when a concept works out. I'm so glad you liked the process. Thank you for the lovely comment.
@@KarenJohnsonArtist It is, for sure. You're most welcome. And btw, I'm going to sketch in awhile and for fun will be trying that technique of painting dogs, something I've never done. You're also good at people sketching, and I've got to hone my skill on that because I've just not gotten the knack yet of figures, especially faces. ☮
So very cute! You've given the dogs real character. I think your second favourite colour is the cobalt. It's an altogether fabulous sketch. Thanks, Mx🌷
Yes, I love cobalt Turquoise, it makes me happy when they are both on my palette. I'm glad you enjoyed the video😊
I love this painting, Karen, it's a wonderful subject, and it came out beautifully. As ever! Mx🌷 Isn't it funny how we each have preferences in paint brands. I have a blue box of 1/2 pan Paul Ruben which I bought when I started sketching and watercolours early this year. I liked them enough but I had nothing to compare them with. Then I came across the Japanese full pan Kuretake paints and I've never used the PR paints again! They really are creamy and vibrant, full of colour, juicy. They don't work for travelling of course, unless you choose a reduced palette. If you get the chance try them out. Mx🌷
I will be checking those out for sure. I always have to go the budget route so hopefully they will fit that.
@KarenJohnsonArtist me too and I was pleasantly surprised.
So lucky she knew who you were. My Mom had dementia too. I took care of her last three years. She knew who I was up until the end. I was lucky. It was not the case for everyone. It’s so hard to see them lost in time. I actually didn’t know about the scuffing of the pallet. I hated mine on my metal pallet so I removed them. If I had known about the scuffing I may not have done that 🤦♀️. That was my lesson for the day. Thank you! Looking great! Cheers! PS. Lucky me…. 2 videos in one day!
Holidays are when you miss them the most🥲 Glad your mom had you and that she recognized you.💕 It's difficult to see the paint when it pools up so it helps.

What a cool quirky building! I looked up Anna Maria Island on Google maps so I would know where this was! Love the free form shape of the building and the sketchiness of your lines. Love that part of urban sketching! Again with the purple shadow….. 💜💜. I agree with the spatters as you go along. It’s more spontaneous aka charming! Thanks again. Cheers! PS… “locked up the Rowdies”. Bahahahaha
I'm loving indigo for shadows lately too. Someone just informed me to call them spatters when I was sayings splatters. Splatters are bigger so now I know. ☺️ I'm hoping in the future I can go visit all these cool places I've been sketching. There's an art museum in Tampa that I think I can make a day trip out of. I miss Chicago's art museums, they are amazing!
Such a gorgeous painting, he’s so cute. I’ll give it a try but working through the ugly is difficult. Thank you for sharing 😊
I like to do 3 sketches of the same subject to see the differences and some don't get past the ugly🤣 Thank you for reaching out💕
Such a sweet painting. A diluted Paynes grey is my go to shadow but this lavender is so bright and happy. Now I need to try it!. Looks like your trip was 2 months ago. Hope it was fun. We got a Blick art store near me about a year ago. It’s terrific! I do the same thing with my Amazon. My Neice taught me that. If it’s a better deal I drop it in Amazon cart and move on. Keep going gurl! You’re rocking it! Cheers!
I hope a Dick Blick opens near me someday. Thank you for the encouragement 🥰
This looked hard, but you make it look easy! It turned out so well. Mx🌷
Thank goodness for the uni-ponca to help correct mistakes. Thank you 💕
what a cute little fish! Happy Holidays!❣
Happy Holidays to you too! Thank you
Love it - thank you 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just found you, your videos are great and they look achievable. TY
You can do it! I never sketched until this year and I love it. Do a practice sketch on scrap paper first then start with pencil on your watercolor paper.
Jane Fonda a coup!e of days ago,in an interview, said that taking an art class or simply doing art would add 7 years to your life! Since she's turning 87 this month it will be interesting to see if she's still with us when she's 94! Regardless, it definitely brings joy in my life! I can't imagine a life without art in it! And your videos just add more joy to my already happy day!☺ Gloria from San antonio
Jane Fonda looked amazing on Bill Maher if thats the interview you speak of. I also couldn't imagine a life without art! I will die broke but happy🤣😂🤣
@ me too!😄
Love this very much! Hé is a cutie! Thanks!
I'm glad you like it, thank you
Love the colours! Great little sketch. Mx
I did a few and the first one was to dark so I lightened it up and really liked the results. Glad you liked it💕
Great work Such a pleasure to look your art Thanks
Thank you so much 😀

I've have more to share, thank you for joining me along my journey. 🥰
@@KarenJohnsonArtist 🙌
What a darling piece. Minimalist style is my favorite! Good for you I sometimes paint elevated too. I have a 1 inch and a 2 inch 3 ring binder that I use for elevations. I struggle with my unipasca to flow. I’m about to give up on them. 🤦♀️. That hurricane warning sound is exactly the sound of my the app for my garage door opening! I reached for my phone! lol. I too have looked for an urban sketch group. I do have one but they like to meet clear across town an hour away at 8 am. I’m retired….. I don’t do 8 am arrivals anymore! But it makes sense here in the summer, it’s to hot at mid day. I should check again maybe they are meeting later now that it’s winter. I’m like you…. I’m a big fan of the A/C! Stay wonky! Cheers!
You'r so funny! 😂 Did you try the uni-POSCA PC-1M? I like that one. I'm still trying to figure out a nice elevated way to draw. I order a new desk and I was thinking maybe a cutting board elevated with bubble wrap rolled up or maybe a towel. Happy Holidays🎄
@ I’ll check. If not I’ll get one
What a cool Bonsai! I love bonsais. I have 2 fake ones in my kitchen. I don’t do real plants, I’m to neglectful for real ones. I think I saw you using the brush micron pen. This looked like a really good choice for this. I’ve picked up my micron brush pen many time and changed my mind as soon as the pen hit the paper. Maybe this is what I need it for. A more organic piece. This is very beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Cheers
All my plant are fake too.🤣 I don't use the micron brush alot but I thought it would be useful for the shading in the tree. Thank you and Happy Holidays Charlotte🎄
@ happy holidays Karen!
Love this.
That makes me happy, thank you 🐠
Oh I am going to paint this guy for sure. Love this paper!
It's very textured and I do love it too. I may get a larger block if available.
You can get a journal with this paper on A
Very cool Very relaxing watching the creation of that fishy. I would love to see more ocean life. As a Pisces, of course I would lol!
I'm a pisces too! Glad you enjoyed the video.🥰
Beautiful Karen
Thank you💕
The spatters of paint?
I will call it spatters of paint from now on. Thank you for the correction.
Great sketch and timelapsed vid; cool WC painting! Thank you!!🎉💜🤘🏾
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for reaching out.🌴
Wow….. so nice. Seriously such a beautiful painting with such simple colors! I love this style. I’ve tried, I always keep adding more…. 🤦♀️ The ocean is so soothing to listen to, the video was almost done before I realized that it was sped up. I was so relaxed I didn’t even notice!. Thank you again. Cheers!
I agree about the simplicity, I like the way the trees turned out, easy but interesting.
Love it, thanks
It was one of my favorite subjects to sketch. Glad you liked it.
How classic Florida! Pink Flamingos! Funny…. I was watching another video where they were saying the same thing about using the same colors on your pallet to create harmony! Not sure why I haven’t heard that or maybe retained it from other teachers but hopefully this coincidence will make it stick! St Augustine! It’s so beautiful. If you make it there go to Flagler College to their cafeteria. The windows in the cafeteria is the largest collection of original Tiffany windows. They are fantastic. (They are from when the building was originally a hotel owned by Flagler) of course you living in Florida, you would know who Flagler is. 😊. Cheers!
Thanks for the tip! That must be so beautiful. It's now on my list of things to see while traveling.
I dont see the link that tells the name of this sketchbook or how I can oder it
Below the video in the description I list the supplies with a link. Hope this helps you find it.

💕Thank you🩷
Beautiful, and I love your new sketch book !!!
Thank you so much!
❤❤❤❤
Thank you💕
I’m watching this on Thanksgiving day. I’m stuffed and exhausted from cooking for 2 days. So happy to be spending the end of my day with you and the sounds of a costal storm. Such a sweet loose sketch. Thank you. Today I’m grateful for finding your channel. Keep creating such fabulous content!
You're the sweetest! I'm thankful for you 🥰
So lovely! It’s nice to mix it up! Good for you! Thank you for the video.
It is fun to mix it up. I admire artist that can stick to one thing. I'm all over the place 🤣 Thank you🩷
Thank you, I learned from this! Out of curiosity: why did you opt to paint the dress grey, when the area behind it is also grey?
It's supposed to be a little shade of light blue. It's a lace dress so I dropped a darker shade on top of that to show that variation. Do you think I should have made the window darker or left the dress white?🤔
Great video. You made it look so easy! Very inspiring.
Thank you so much 💕
Oh I love these Karen !!!!
Thank you Mildred, I didn't think sketching people was going to be for me but it's fun. As long as they are on the abstract side 😂
I love your style. Thank you for the video. I've been learning to draw more ppl to my sketch these days.
Thank you, I love sketching because you can do it anywhere and anytime you fell inspired. I keep a tiny sketchbook in my purse at all times. 😁
These ladies are fabulous. Please go out urban sketching I would love to see that ❤❤
I'll will try my best😊 Thank you💕
I have both those hats. I just love the way you explain everything so calm, pleasant voice, and plotting the proportions was the pièce de résistance. I have a hard time putting people in my drawings, paintings, however your method may be my stepping stone into something remarkable. 🙂Thank you.
I've been learning from Sketching Scottie. He explains it much better than I do and he makes it look so easy. I'm glad you enjoyed my process. Keep those hats, they never go out of style! 💕
Oh my! It turned out adorable. Intense conversation going on there. Give the plein aire a go, you'll be fine. I just smile, and carry on, maybe comment on the weather... very British 😂. Your sketches are gorgeous, you've nowt to worry about. Mx🌷
I will give it a go and talk about the weather. They say it's so much better because you can capture the feel of the scene. Thank you as always 🥰
So cute! Ty!
Thank you 😊
Very nice work! An inspiration
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Fiouf. That one is a tough one. Well done Karen
Thank you, the struggle is real 🤣
I sketched right along with you on this one, it was fun !
I love that! I'm glad you liked the subject 🥰
Obsessed with your videos! So happy you’re doing people now too! Can’t wait to see more!
People are a real challenge🤯 I'm so happy you liked it! Thank you
I love how you showed your adjustment on the ear with the posc a pen! I a!ways seem to learn something new with every one of your sketches! This topic was so heart warming! I can't wait to see the little ladies yo o mentioned! Warm wishes from Texas!
Thank you for reaching out. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!😁
