Yes, it helps me a lot to have a good sketch before painting. I used to be lazy and want to go straight to painting with crude sketch. But now I use 2/3 of the process to sketch and 1/3 to paint.
I'm 56 and started in watercolor. My teacher told me to back it up and learn to draw. Agree wholeheartedly it is the best advice I've received. Unfortunately it makes throwing pigment less frequent, but my results are much more palatable! Pun intended... Cheers
Know Pasadena well, grew up there, got family photos of the place back to 1900 onward, and graduated from Pasadena High many moons ago, in the mid-60s, and the other glories are the Norton Simon Museum and the Huntington. Great memories.
Beautiful. Yes, I agree that the drawing makes the painting easier. I had to learn how to draw and I’m glad I did. It’s better than believing you can’t.
The better I draw the better my paintings! Trying to draw every day & am amazed at how much faster I draw & more accurate I’ve gotten. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & your time
Great demonstration of painting with pencil drawing as base, appreciate explaining in a gentle soothing tone which is encouraging to beginners, perhaps mentioning colours used would have been useful, thanks for upload...!
Sketching is paramount, it is how you define an edge. The graphite or charcoal provides value. Try something fun, by answering this question; what are your favorite 2 colors? I wonder what your sketch would look like in your favorite colors. I'll look at Watercolor Cafe for your post.
I enjoy your lessons. If I went back in to fix up the sky at the end the painting would have been ruined; your control and confidence in the medium is amazing!
Great video. I tried to sketch a landscape with shadow, I realised that I was missing so many details earlier, my painting looks better. Thank you Eric for this great lesson and painting. Adds lot of value add to my watercolour practise. 👍👍👍
Yes, for me the inicial drawing makes all difference to the final results. I tried some times to painting without drawing before, but the final disappointment me. Txs Eric. Your videos are very instructive and I like to watch many times. A big hug, from Brazil 🇧🇷 🤗
Yes....I recently started watercolour....it's so important to plan ahead....I was bit apprehensive about pencil shading before....but this video gives me courage to go that way confidently....big thanks 🙏
David Curtis seems to incorporate quite a lot of graphite shading into his watercolours and the grey of which seems to somehow lend a curious iridescence once the colour is painted on top.
Yes fundamental drawing is important, this video is very helpful for beginners like myself always struggling with sketching before painting. Thank you so much
Thank you Eric, I like your style and your comments/descriptions of how and why. I do think it is helpful to have first, a near finished drawing before painting with watercolor. I am not bothered so much by the drawing seen under the paint but, I am disappointed if the color is "dirty". I look forward to more of your videos!
Good afternoon Eric, You say, around 3-mins in the video, that you've never been inside the Pasadena City Hall. You REALLY need to go inside. A couple of other very cool public builds the Pasadena bridge for example or any of Frank Loyd Wright's creations. While I do reside in Spring, Texas now, I grew up on Monte Bonito in Eagle Rock. Los Angeles has several iconic architectural structures, you have a blessing living in the area, a unique form of architecture was created there and lived only for a short while from 1921 thru 36 known as Storybook Cottages. They're everywhere from Burbank to Alhambra.
I really wanted... But I was pretty unlucky. The first time I went it was around 2007 and they are remodeling the interior so I couldn’t go in. And this time they closed it due to the upcoming Rose Bowl parade 😔
@@Cafewatercolor Too bad, I grew up next to Eagle Rock Park, on Monte Bonito. The bridge and any of Frank Loyd Wright's creations are excellent to draw aw well.
Eric....you are such an inspiration and just so damn cute and sweet and I love your videos! Do not worry, I am a 69 years old woman trying to learn and absorb all the information that I can concerning art and you are such a wonderful teacher! I thank you immensely! You are a joy to listen to and watch! God bless you!
I have been an artist since I was a child. Finally now, in my later life I am able to continue to learn, grow and hope to be successful! Your calm, gentle, honest way of reaching is so much appreciated!
I'm really enjoying your videos, Eric. Thanks! Do you have any information to share or demo on adding interest with slightly curvilinear drawing for paintings?
Thank you for your video. I used to draw with pencil but refused to paint over it, I think because I didn't know they could work together Or how to, now will try to watercolour it. Thanks.
Could such a kind of watercolor painting be done without pre-drawing anything at all, if not some light contours? It is just for learning, because I’m at the very beginning ... Thank you and sorry for my poor English 😊
I use mostly Bao Hong artist grade, but Saunders Waterford and Arches are both good papers as well. Good papers can take paint and retain moisture better.
So I've been hearing how drawing is the best way to prepare for painting and how it can make painters better. I always do sketches prior to painting however, if there's too much led, the paint become muddy. Is there a better way to avoid this? I also use a soft eraser to not harm the cotton paper. In your video it didn't look like the pencil led effected the painting.
As you can see in this video my painting looks more dirty than my previous one. However, the dirty parts are mostly in the shadow area so it's not as bad. Keep the light area clean with just simple lines and you should be fine =)
Hi, this is Ali from Spain 😊... I mete your channel few time ago and really like the way you explain your thaughts scout watercolor...I an a very beginner, not only at painting, but also drawing...I am very bad at this subject....any advice about where to start? Maybe a book? Because I'd really like to experiment with this relaxing type of painting....Thanks!
Hi, thanks for replying! The big problem for me is seeing the basic form of objects and their proportions, like the video where you explained how to draw trees...

It is pencil. And yes it does smeared a bit. But mostly in the shadow area. Like I said this is not how I usually work. But it can be helpful if you just want to get started with watercolor :)
I didn’t try this with portrait. But I think I would prefer not to do that since you want to keep the portrait look cleaner. I usually try to keep my portrait pencil drawing simpler and cleaner

Do you think fundamental drawing is important for painting? Let me know =)
Yes,it is. A good drawing makes better painting, I think.
Absolutely, it is even the biggest part for a good drawing
Drawing everyday is definitely helping me so yes, personally I believe it is important.
i think it can be no 2.for those who can't draw, they can try tracing first using lightbox so they can focus on color

drawing forces you to see, and the more you see the better you paint
Exactly!
"Keep your line flowing" I have to remember .. thank you very much Éric

Is your pallette a Heung il aluminum pallette?
Hi Eric. I have recently started watercolour and am not great at drawing/perspective. Is there a sample available to look at your course?

Nice five day growth Eric. Keep growing it. I look like that fifteen minutes after I shave.

So for predrawing portraits would you want the pencil as visible ?

Is that a standard pencil lead that you are using for the drawing? If not what kind is it? Thanks.
It is 0.7mm 4B lead. I will add the pencil in the description.

Dear Eric, i think getting the drawing is paramount to getting a good painting it’s a great demo. but the noise from the traffic is distracting.
You know, Rick, I have many a friend in Casablanca, but somehow, just because you despise me, you are the only one I trust.
But ... pencil shading is visible throughout????
sujanith tottempudi yes it will, as you can see in my final result. Most of the pencil mark will be in the shadow area so it’s not that bad :)
