  • June 5, 2021 was the opening day for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's Chama operation. 487 leads passengers to Osier, CO and back.
    Leaving the Chama yard is like taking a step back in time to another era. Sheep are being herded at Lobato by horseback riders and sheep dogs. Some of the most beautiful scenery in the country is to be found between Chama and Osier. After departing Cumbres, 487 glides down the curves at Tanglefoot through a beautiful meadow before continuing on to Los Pinos and Osier.

    To see a steam train passing thru some magnificent scenery, it's gold. The drone footages are awesome.👍

      That’s the original whistle it wore for decades. It’s got a hooter bowl and a 5 chime bell and is noticeably higher pitched than any of the other 5s . She sounds great if you can get a good quill

      @@AustinGoodwin1 thanks for the info. I thought it sounded like the whistle it had for years. Was it the same whistle it had back in the 90s as well? I have a bunch of old DVDs I remember watching of C&T and 487 when I was a kid and it definitely sounded significantly different from how it sounds now.

    I believe it’s a CB&Q 5 Chime on 487! It sounds very much like what NKP 587’s whistle in the late 1980’s

      I hope not by September 30. I want to ride a coal burner, don’t care for oil burner, they smell bad.

      Maybe you will have me for a docent. I'll be out there and available 9/4 through 9/18. Docent's "rides" are assigned by the docent coordinator and while I will staying in Chama, I may be assigned to a "ride" at either end of the line. J. H. Sullivan

    I always wondered what that shack looking thing is on the tender. Anyone know?

    • @YardLimit
      @YardLimit  2 роки тому

      Normally, freight operations required both a head-end brakeman and a brakeman at the rear of the train. Often, there wasn't a lot of extra room in the cab. The fireman didn't always like to share his seat with the brakeman and there wasn't really enough room to stand without getting in the way of the fireman. By 1937, new locomotives were built with enough room to seat the head-end brakeman in the cab. Older locomotives were modified with a small cabin on the top of the tender for the head-end brakeman. This was called a "doghouse".

      @@realethanangell actually a D&RGW 5 chime Rizzoli replica, it was sent away after the 2017 to get a new languid plate and now it is a modified D&RGW 5 with a D&RGW hooter bowl on the bottom which is why you hear some shrieking on the whistle when they blow it very loudly.
