To set you people straight, here are some facts as to why the LFA has a ludicrous price tag: 1) Toyota definitely took their time in developing the car. Almost a decade. First 5 years, they designed it with aluminum in mind. But they noticed that aluminum was too heavy, so they scrapped that and started again with carbon fiber. As we all know, carbon fiber is an incredibly expensive material to be used in just about anything, especially on cars. 2) One of the LFA's main features is the engine, which is a very powerful V10, but it's smaller than a V8 and lighter than a V6. That's because the facilities and equipment used to build the LFA's engines, are the same facilities and equipment Toyota had used to build engines for their Formula 1 cars. That's why they were able to make a very compact but very powerful engine. In short, the LFA incorporates some F1 technology in itself. And yet, despite the price, Toyota does not earn a single penny after selling all of their 500 LFAs. Crazy.

I don’t think it’ll be as huge as the F1, but I agree the price still probably has a lot further to climb. In a few years we’ll be talking about when you could get an LFA for “only” 800 grand
But then it wouldn't be a Supra... It would be a baby LFA... The modeled the new Supra after the Supra, which they should have... They just slightly missed the mark
You need to understand that this car was meant to set a new technological bench mark this was purely an exercise in technology to show what the brand is capable of and what their engineers are capable of it was never meant to compete with a Ferrari or maclaren that was never the brief it was purely to beat every one in the technology race which I believe they have with this car......now they have to get that tech in there mass produced road cars that's when joe public will feel the benefits from this car
As for price. As far as I know no one has had a gun put to their head and been marched to the dealer and forced to buy this car if you like it and can afford it why not ?
4.8L V10 putting out 500+hp with 9000rpm potential ? Nothing "technological" there, i don't think. Honda got 240hp with a high revving 2.0 4cyl about a decade ago, almost. The V10 is amazing but with 10 cylinders this is expected.
Clarkson has said that about a few cars. You should always take what he says with a grain of salt. I love Clarkson (and Hammond and May for that matter) but the guy can make very little sense. Take for example what he says about Alfas - that every real petrol head should, at some time in their life, own one, but then on the other hand they're an absolute nightmare because of horrible reliability and impracticality. When it comes to cars, Clarkson is 99.9% emotion and how the car makes him feel.
@@kevins5911 I agree, even with lower or second hand prices. I had an old Volvo, every time I get in I smiled, but too old for a daily driver for me. Bought a newer one with 5 cilinder engine. olvisvasquez, absolutely, probably more as long as you kept up with scheduled maintenance and oil changes. There are so many people complaining about the price and comparing it to cheaper more powerful cars, and all of them are missing the point. The LFA is a supercar and as such it needs to be exclusive (Check), be recognizable both visually and audibly (Check), have high quality (Check) and have good performance (Check) in that order. These cars aren't built to race, they are a status symbol and it isn't unusual for owners of this kind of car to put them on display.
I am an engineer, so it's no surprise that the LFA is my favorite supercar. All the little details Toyota put into it amuse me to no end, and its engine noise is pure sex!
@@josephm.crancebbapm4904 Did it fail? Toyota was only going to make 500. How is making 500 a failure? Yes they didn't make money off them as far as profits are concerned but if you look at the newest vet it up the game for sevral manufacturers. Limited production.
Just in case anyone is interested in this, most wealthy collectors are self-insured. Depends on the state, but usually you put a sum of money into a trust, and it's bonded as insurance. Technically there's no premium, it's just a set amount of money allocated to potential losses.

Yamaha designed the engine for this car. Amazing that a motorcycle manufacturer in their first attempt create a gem of a engine like this. Imagine the potential they have if they decide to make cars.
the reason for the LFA high price is the limited production number. your average corolla need around hundred of millions in production cost, for testing, engineering etc. thus this car is actually a bargain
leolol Exactly, Toyota is just trying to show that they have great engineers and designers that can build a car that can run with the best of the best. For the same reason Ferrari only built 400 Enzo's. Exclusivity, counts and draws attention.
When the LFA first came out I wasn't really a big fan of the way it looked but, I have to say, it's one of the best looking cars to come from that era, and still looks great to this day. Similarly, my views have changed towards the RC-F as well.
its 2017 and this car is just as amazing as ever such a beautiful Marvel of engineering and equality what a masterpiece and this has just about the most incredible engine sound of any car ever produced
Cut to 2018, I'd still take this over any Ferrari or Lambo, any day. I know the LFA is far from the fastest supercar, but Japanese engineering is easily some of the best in the world overall and I love the sharp design language, which I believe is timeless. And the way this thing sounds. Just, wow! The LFA and the new NSX, my top 2 favorite cars.
Thank you Mr Toyoda for finally putting us on the map and giving us a Supercar to be proud of! You know we were in a dry spell there for a while. Once the Supra ceased production we were left with two cars that failed to live up to their name and heritage - The 7th generation Celica and the 3rd generation MR2 just didn't even deserve the names they were blessed with. So with that said, all of Toyota's great cars ended in the last century. Then a new Mr Toyoda took the reins and insisted on the LFA being no compromise perfection. He and his team truly succeeded beyond our dreams and expectations! Next he proclaimed he wanted a replacement to the classic Corollas of the AE86 years. And once again he and his team, aided by Subaru who is partially owned by Toyota, knocked the ball out of the park with their Toyota GT86 (Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ). Now I know there is currently no turbo version but don't be fooled. I'm wiling to put money that one or all of the triplets will get a turbo version. Now then sir I say it's time to bring all the way home. We want a new turbo AWD Celica GT4 and mid-engined RWD Turbo MR2. We deserve it. This needs to be said too- Can we just make Jay Leno the main presenter of the American Top Gear? Keep Tanner Foust on as the USA Stig and fire those other two annoying losers who consistently ruin that show. With Jay at the head and Tanner to back him up we just might have a show worthy of the name Top Gear that would perhaps be as good as the original UK version.
Um they don't have 40 years of racing heritage =P he doesn't mention it because it doesn't exist. The original prince skylines were made by a company that fell apart and sold themselves to Datsun. Later Niss/Datsun eventually got to the r32 (Of course the last generation Ferrari crew working for them at this time probly had nothing to do with this =P ) which in japanTC racing was legendary but elsewhere its unique way of building a car landed it in a class that wasn't exactly fair (like racing a stock prius Vs a Ferrari.) AusTC after two years placed it in a class with cars of comparable power and weight. Once it was placed with cars that had a comparable specs it never placed higher then 4th. After the R33 and R34 never did well in their classes due to becoming extremely overweight with their new AWD system. All that aside............. The modern day GTR is indeed a great piece of engineering however the question still remains who the hell built it? Originally they said American Nissan designers designed the 3/4 of the body work, and their euro designers did the roofline while they made the premier new chassis based on the old 2001 skyline model. Later it was revealed that Lotus was employed and designed the chassis because the Japanese couldn't get the results or the weight they wanted............. In result Nissan tweaks out and twin turbo's a v6 and that's about as far as their racing heritage goes (and that's all you get from them when you buy a modern GTR =P.)
A lot of people would disagree with you. It doesn't matter who built what part or where, the fact of the matter is they raced under Datsan/Nissan, and does anybody really make thier own cars anymore?
Its not deniable that they have done good things. However the companies that did them no longer exist, leaving no heritage within there new cars. However the LFA is groundbreaking for there country because the technology within it is now patented and other companies are paying to use it. Many people shrug this off but many people forget that All the money porsche makes, over 40% comes from patented technology.

I'll keep it short and sweet for those going on about something they'll never be able to afford.
The LFA today is still worth close to 400K. The cheapest I saw on Autotrader is 349K by a private seller and most go for 398K some over 400K. Good luck with that kind of resale value on your 5 years old Dodge Hellcat.
They built 500 of them and nothing remotely close since. If they built another supercar in high volume with same engine those values wouldve been considerably lower. Compare it more to like viper acr. Those hold quite nicely.
I Finn I actually just seen one for sale for $800k in California.
If the mileage is low below than 50000kms it's over 400k dollars damn

This sounds a 1000 times better than 2014 F1 cars.
What a beauty. The engineers who made this really did something special here. This example of the LFA is particularly stunning.
Well it’s December 2019 and the LFA still goes for around $400k and ones with the Nurburgring package have sold for as much as $700k. Anyone who spent the extra 70 grand can get a nice return on their investment if they ever plan to sell it.
Autum 21, LFA are actually between 600.000€ to 1.000.000€ priced and the Nürburgrin edition at 1.000.000+€ priced......if you are able to find one for sale.
I think in the next 4-5 years the price will sky rocket like the Mclaren F1
@@Zero.X Yeah it’s really crazy what can happen in a year. Throughout most of 2020 the base models were still selling at around $400k for even low mileage cars and now the cheapest sale I could find in 2021 (at least in the US) was $579,000. I don’t think it’ll be as huge as the F1, but I agree the price still probably has a lot further to climb. In a few years we’ll be talking about when you could get an LFA for “only” 800 grand
Well, now it's 2024 and prices are still going up.
I wish Toyata had taken it's design cues from this car for the new Supra.
Amen
If only LFA was a supra whole world would love it
Or just made it look more like the FT1 concept
But then it wouldn't be a Supra... It would be a baby LFA... The modeled the new Supra after the Supra, which they should have... They just slightly missed the mark

Thank you UA-cam for recommending this after 9 years.

😏🇨🇺🇺🇸
Clarkson has said that about a few cars. You should always take what he says with a grain of salt. I love Clarkson (and Hammond and May for that matter) but the guy can make very little sense. Take for example what he says about Alfas - that every real petrol head should, at some time in their life, own one, but then on the other hand they're an absolute nightmare because of horrible reliability and impracticality. When it comes to cars, Clarkson is 99.9% emotion and how the car makes him feel.

There are still 13 LFA's unsold. You can legit buy a new one from the showroom, now!
If you had the money, that is.
These cars aren't built to race, they are a status symbol and it isn't unusual for owners of this kind of car to put them on display.

the reason for the LFA high price is the limited production number. your average corolla need around hundred of millions in production cost, for testing, engineering etc. thus this car is actually a bargain
By any chance do you know why the limited the production number?
to be honest i have no idea, I'm guessing they lose money for every car they build, and for novelty
true that.but all cars were sold in the two years of production. and they intended to make 500 from the very beginning
Hadie Kumastar exclusivity, rich people want to know that not everybody an have one, because only 500 are made.

Exactly, Toyota is just trying to show that they have great engineers and designers that can build a car that can run with the best of the best.

And the way this thing sounds. Just, wow! The LFA and the new NSX, my top 2 favorite cars.
Out of all the stats, R&D engineering, cost to produce, the sound is the best for a production vehicle hands-down.
I want to live in Jay Leno's Garage!
Lol...
You think there is a kitchen in there? I would need food lol
Keep Tanner Foust on as the USA Stig and fire those other two annoying losers who consistently ruin that show. when talking about Japanese car heritage you can"t forget about the Nissan Skyline, 40+ years of racing heritage.
Thank you for saying that, I'm not sure how Jay missed saying that!
Biggggg GTR/Skyline fan

EVO: "Closer in concept to the F12 is the Lexus LFA. It’s massively outgunned by the F12 and more expensive, too, but we think it’s more than the sum of its beautiful carbon and titanium parts, and not even the F12′s V12 feels as special as that searing 552bhp 4.8-litre V10.
