- Kate and Alison will show you how to build a non-draining carnivorous plant bog with American pitcher plants (Sarracenia). This technique can be used for all the temperate species like Venus flytraps, Pinguicula and Drosera. For more information or to order, checkout www.californiacarnivores.com! (Also, Peter stops by at the end to check out our bog)

This channel is gonna blow up soon I just know it! Awesome video
I never would’ve thought of that rock channel! I’ve been doing something similar with some pvc. Next time I repot my little bog I’m definitely going to do your method
The rock?
Yeah I agree I have been using pvc for my sip / self watering / bog containers . The rock idea is so much cheaper and better looking.
I'm smittens about Kate 😍
she has gorgeous pitchers.
Love the videos as always. Quick question though. When you are essentially bottom watering, like with this or the tray method, do you worry about the top layer of soil drying out? Or is it not an issue because where the roots are is wet?
If you keep this well watered, the top layer of soil will usually keep moist as well but you can top water occasionally to maintain that.
Also, watering from the bottom can prevent insects from laying their eggs in the top soil and the larvae eat the roots :O
How much water do you keep in there how do you know when they need more water
Kate, with those glasses and that haircut, you look a lot like Kristen Schaal!
yes!! I was like ooh! Kristen Schaal!
Wait is that a real Venus fly trap in the background??? I didn’t know they get that big wtf
It’s a big sculpture!
I'm building a vft bogg is zeolite pool filter sand safe to use, I cant find any info
That should work well!
Ngl. I have a crush on kate. ☺
Wah! I made a really beautiful pond/bog container planting a few years ago. It was wonderful! Then the raccoons and bears discovered it. No more pond.
Nooooo!!!! Raccoons can be so destructive!
Are you Heidi Gardner?
Thank you for posting this video! This is exactly what I was wanting to build but didnt know where to start!
Edit: not 12 hours later I am putting my bog together. So much for "self control" lol
Yay! I’m so glad!!!
Hi, I'm from Germany!
I am so excited about your idea with the bigger stones. I have a PVP pipe in my bog, but I will change it to your idea with the stones. In my bogs and my bog garden I have a lot of plastic pots upside down on the ground of the bogs. It saves peat and you get a water reservoir. The capilarity holds the peat wet.
Nice video and an georgeous flytrap and very nice Nepenthes.
Hi! That’s a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
Can you explain a little more about this idea?
New to your channel. The algorithm popped it in my feed. I thought it was an SNL skit from the thumbnail because Kate looks quite a bit like Heidi Gardner at a glance. Nice vid!
How in God's name did that venus fly trap behind her get that big! I would LOVE THAT
I did a spit take when I saw it, lol
It’s a big sculpture - we have a bunch in the nursery and I always forget they’re in the videos 😂
@@California_Carnivores I was losing my cahoots when I saw that thang!
Aw man! Lol i was so in love too.
venus child trap
And that's why I wouldn't fill my pot all the way full your moving around too much soil you can fill it three-quarters spread out the roots a little bit more you don't have to dig so much and then you can use the water to help compress and settle the soil that's why I always recommend a drain plug even though it's a bog planter I can flush the system if anything seems out of whack after all dogs do flood out right nothing like flooding your bog and then give it a day and then training it
Love this!! So informative and beautifully done. The river rock cylinder is GENIUS! Thanks for the great video.
I’m trying to start my own carnivorous plant garden so thank you!!
This is awesome. I'm getting some peat immediately. I've killed 2 or 3 fly traps over the years, I prefer tropical plants, mostly ones that vine or creep. Tradescantia varieties, pothos and aloe are my favorites. But I bought another venus fly trap last year sometime and managed to keep it alive in perlite and spaghnum moss bog but those dry out so fast. I was sure my husband had killed it by forgetting to water it when I was gone, but i trimmed it, and put it in the fridge for winter. Darn thing is still alive lol, since it's out of the fridge now have to keep it alive again lol. Peat looks alot better than spaghnum. And that rock channel is brilliant!
Its interesting hearing Americans mentioning Adrian Slack, I met and had a long chat with him at the Chelsea flower show many years ago whilst i was working on the uk carnivorous plant society display stand, he seemed such a nice guy and his plants were amazing
Wow! He’s a horticultural hero for us! That’s so cool!
i kinda got into plants because of fish keeping but one day your guys channel popped up and I've been hooked eversince
😊
I think I'll do this whenever I recover my collection again (there was an outbreak which caused me to lose pretty much half of my American carnivorous plants. Some were okay but the others are definitely going to need time to recover)
What killed them?
@@georgetrevor8167 surprisingly the very thing they're supposed to be killing. Bugs.
@@DanteTimberwolf How did you stop the outbreak, or did it stop on its own?
You look like the chick from last man on earth whazzer face kristen Schaal
I read this as, "How To Buld a Carnivorous Plant Pog".
I read blog, really confusing
I read "How to Build a Coronavirus Plant Bog"
I love your technique on the water tunnel thing
Nice job, your plants look lovely!
I didn't know you guys had a UA-cam channel!! How cool!! I live in Mississippi, but I visited your place when I was out visiting with my grandkids. We enjoyed it so much! . Subscribed now!
I hit like because you said "Unglazed" ceramics. That was exactly what I wanted to know when I came here. Gonna watch more of the video just to see if there's anything else I've missed in other digging I've done on the internet. TY
I’m so glad to hear that!
@@California_Carnivores Thanks, sadly the old one died when I transplanted and the new one turned black but is now growing new leaves. I have a feeling it is getting a bit too hot.
@@aryah1513 I hope it turns around for you!
Someone told me absolutely wait until dormancy to prevent root rot! I was told this after the fact. It was way over due for reporting, it broke through a 6in pot... I didn’t snap the rhizome though. I hope it doesn’t turn ugly. I’m an hour south of y’all... fingers crossed (did it yesterday)
You can definitely repot Sarracenia at any point during the year safely. The main reason we suggest you do it in winter is that the plants are not actively growing during that time. When you repot now, you’ll see some pitchers die back and growth will slow as the plant adjusts to being repotted. That’s all totally okay! The plant will still appreciate being repotted.
we also use peat and perlite
im considering getting into temperate pitcher plants after finding out Alberta is home to S purpurea, I had no idea we had carnivorous plants here. Apparently there are a couple species of sundew here too
Can you please make a video on those GIANT Venus fly trap type plants behind you? They look bigger than your hand 🖐 what?! 😮
They are fake man 😂😂
It’s a crazy sculpture 😆
Snap snap tentacles. LOL
If you know that video from Sigmund Hartmeyer.
Runway lights and snap tentacles
Great work on making the bog. I've learned alot and my venus fly trap is growing and thriving
I would love your videos have spanish subtitles 😭
Very cool! Are there any peat free mixes you’d recommend? I’m going to be making a bog but would prefer peat free, to lessen the environmental impacts of harvesting peat
I recommend checking with the UK carnivorous plant society as they have been doing a lot of research on alternatives!
Great question. I'm looking into this now.
Thanks! Would love to see a video on how you'd prepare a bog garden without using peat, and instead using some of the alternatives...maybe coco coir??
I wouldn't compress and fill my pot so full right away off the bat before planting and to I use a PVC pipe for my watering Pole straight down the center and then I can use a plastic piece of Styrofoam at the end to see if there's water in the bottom of my pot
Yasssssss. Finally, next can you please make vid on cephalotus care as requested?
It’s on the list and we will make the video when we release the Cephalotus for sale later this year 😊
@@California_Carnivores glad to her it! Although I can’t buy it 😢😢😢
Also the Cobra Lily please, seems to be so many varieties of substrate, white posts etc and other advice. Cheers, Chris, UK. X
Why not drill holes in the bottom and then put rocks in the bottom?
Don't cut flower off. It doesn't exhaustes the plant. Only Plant that you can cutt flowers off is venus fly trap and nepenthes!!
We agree! In this case, because of the shock of transplant in the early stages of the growing season, we cut the flowers off to help reduce that shock.
@@California_Carnivores in this way it is possible.
I only reup with BASS if the free lure pack is worth it 😂😂
Hello I got a nepenthes from you guys and it’s called nepenthes spectablils x tenuis
You mentioned they like being outside in full sun, is there an upper limit for temps they will tolerate? It gets really really hot here in the summer (occasionally over 110) and I worry they won’t make it through a heat wave
They don’t mind high temps as long as they have lots of water. It can get over 100 in our zone as well (last year we had one 112 day 🥵) as long as it’s not sustained for weeks on end, and they have lots of water, they’ll be okay.
@@California_Carnivores awesome! That makes me so happy to hear!
I’m watching this at 1am and I should really be sleeping.
Worth it
Great Peter cameo 😉😉😉
I have a copy of Savage Garden from the early 2000s, and when I first heard California Carnivores mentioned, I thought that sounded familiar...great book. So cool to see the greenhouses where the passion for such plants is shared by you all!
Really helpful video thanks. PS Kate is really hot 😅
it’s Louise from bob’s burgers right? But she sounds normal
Hi! Just wondering if this were to be outside, how would one come about battling fungal gnats? Because they will be attracted to the wet soil! I hope to do a bog in the near future, great video!!
We rarely see fungus gnat infestation outside but it is possible. If you add a sticky plant like a sundew to your bog, it will eat the adult fungus gnats.
I LOVED pinguicula indoors with my houseplants to combat gnats. They are so effective!
Any suggestions for here I can find a bag of pumice that big? I’ve checked my local nursery’s but haven’t found anything that big. I’m local to Sonoma county
Home Depot sometimes has it or Harmony should have large bags of pumice!
For a second I thought Kristen Shaal got into gardening 🤷🏻
Some growers say this type of watering system isn't good for your plants, that it may cause root rot and a lack of oxygen simulation. What's your thoughts?
That’s very rare and happens under specific circumstances in our experience. We’ve been growing these plants for 30 years and have talked to thousands of customers all over the United States and the world so we get a lot of data on what works and what goes wrong! Generally root rot happens only in extremely hot and humid climates like Alabama in summer. In most places this is not an issue. And the plants naturally grow in water logged, boggy soil so they’re adapted for this. We also often see people misdiagnose root rot because a lot of carnivorous plants have black or brown roots naturally and not many of them. Often the death is caused by something else and root rot is blamed. That all being said, it can happen!
Would this setup be good for places like San Diego? I keep hearing it needs more humidity so I'm worried these plants including sundews and venus fly traps will die if I don't cover them up
Sarracenia and flytraps do really well in San Diego! They don’t need humidity and will be able to grow outside, year round in your location
@@California_Carnivores Awesome thats great to know! :D
Please please please help me. I have a Venus flytrap with aphids. So I microwaved the medium, and the plant is now soaking underwater in a clean container with rain water. It’s not in the sun. I was going to leave it for 24 hours. Will that kill the aphids? Please help me😢
We use TakeDown garden spray which is pyrethrum based. Apply that to the plant as per the package instructions. Always spray new growth (which they find the tastiest) and that should help!
no moss? no companion plants? just peat & perlite to look at on the surface??? I was expecting something more inspired to be honest.
You can definitely add anything you want to your bog! This is a simple beginners guide. The moss will grow in with time on its own but we have to be patient while it does.
great video! do you recommend building in drainage? like a spigot in the bottom to prevent anaerobic 'buildup' in the planter. Like maybe flush the system every few weeks? thanks!
It’s totally up to you! We have a bog video all about building a draining bog and it is an easier bog to care for. The non-draining ones are harder because you have to frequently water in summer but they can be very fun!
I kept looking the various types of nepenthes behind Kate and Alison
Joy Gardening Brings Your Laughter Alone!
Oh hey that bog pot looks like my bog pot!
Could you by change tell me where you get that large bag of pumice
I'm worried about buying a bag of sand
Some companies do such
Thank you
We get our supplies from local nurseries like Harmony Farm Supply and nursery/landscape suppliers like Grab and Grow. There may be something similar in your area.
I'm in zone 5 adding conversation piece to it...wish me luck
In winter, mulch them in very heavily on the top and sides of the pot with 4-6” of heavy mulch!
I clicked out of curiosity, I stayed because you start out with laughter, and just like that you made my day.
Thank you so much! 😊
Nice information 👍🏻 thank you So much ☺️💕🐾🐕🌹🌿
Awesome! I love your videos, they're so informative :)
Thank you! We're so glad you find them helpful. :)
i feel as though a drainage hole between a third to two thirds of the way up on the side would be a big improvement to the design and make it a more long term installation, or this but with drainage holes and a tray
We prefer less drainage because we grow our plants outside in zone 9b where it gets quite hot and we need to bog to hold a lot of water. Having lower drainage holes or sitting in a tray would mean we would be watering it every day or even twice a day
Saving this for when I have a backyard one day! Thanks for all of the detailed information!🥰
Awesome video, putting together my big now. Some videos suggest lots of drainage holes but this one didn't. Is that because of the size of the bog? Anyway, thanks for all this information.
We have another bog building video and that’s a draining bog - they are often easier to care for. Many people had requested this non-draining bog tutorial. For a bog this size it does best non-draining for sure!
I have something similar with bromeliads!
Hello to tree lovers Come see by people.
Is it a good idea to have venus fly traps in the same bog as droseras? since fly traps require dormancy, I'm not sure if I should keep droseras at low temperature with the traps.
You can include the temperate Drosera like tracyi, filiformis, intermedia etc
Gorgeous bog!
Such a cool nursery!
I bought several plants from. You guys. Love it.
What do you if you overwater it, and fill up the false bottom to much
In the summer, it’s okay if your plants are flooded and they’ll use the water over a few days. In the winter you can either gently tip out the water or drill holes along the soil surface to let that water run out if it overflows the plants
Can you use Coir instead of peat?
Coir can unfortunately have a high TDS so I would avoid using it.
I'm not a pro, but am looking to avoidpeat for environmental reasons. Another video had a thread that talked about coco coir from a brand called Canna that is rinsed already! Other people said they just soak the coir overnight and rinse it well the next day. Either way, what I learned was to use a TDS meter and it should be less than 50-80 ppm. Like I said, I'm not a pro, but this is what I've gathered from people who have experience with coir.
U still play on the Big Bang theory?
How do you know how often you would need to water? Would you just feel the dirt to see if it needs more water? Great video!
In the summer, almost every day. You want to soil to always be moist and not dry. It can dry out a little but try to avoid it getting so dry that the soil pulls away from the sides of the pot
Wouldn’t the water leech minerals from the rocks?
We don’t find that to be a problem, we do rinse the rocks before using them if they’re dusty though
That’s awesome thank you
So there's no overflow hole on side ? What about rain 🌧️
We drill little overflow holes on the side at the end of the video, right above the soil line. Although, on my bogs at home I actually prefer no drainage holes.
Yes, I know this an older video but you could insert a piece of pvc with the bottom end cut at an angle to get water to the bottom
You could totally do that!
@@California_Carnivoresyour River rocks look nicer
I followed your guide completely l. Only difference is that I used 3-4 inches of perlite for the water table instead of pumice. I just couldn’t find enough pumice to fill the containers that I purchased. Thanks a bunch!!!!!
Love in first sight does exist
Who’s the new girl?
That’s Alison! She’s answering all the emails and running the Office but has been a longtime grower of carnivorous plants and friend of the nursery 😃
hello from france ,very nice cephalotus behind you !
Hi! 😁
What brand of Pumice do you recommend?
We use Vigaro
I’m in Texas. So I don’t know if these rules still apply
It can depend a little on where you are in Texas but overall, with some modifications you can also grow carnivorous plants outside there in a bog. You will want to grow them in full morning sun with protection from the full afternoon sun. And you’ll have to keep the bog heavily watered to offset heat and drying out. Also, there is a native carnivorous plant in Eastern Texas, Sarracenia alata!
@@California_Carnivores that’s fantastic. I ordered a plastic pot like the one here and I didn’t realize it was huge lol. Can I order that from y’all?
I’m in the Dallas area.
Thank you!
Beautiful pitcher plants!
How's it hangin, fellas?
Hangin’ full of bugs and digestive fluids 😉
So I need to make sure that the pot doesn’t have any drainage holes, right?
We like to drill holes right at the surface of the soil so that the rain runs out of the top. If you watch the very end of the video, Kate shows placement of these 😊
@@California_Carnivores I just watched it. That’s a great idea. Thank you so much.
I can't believe that she just called that potting mix "dirt"
It’s our kind of “dirt” 😂😉
@@California_Carnivores like the rude lady said dont complain
Are distilled and filtered the same thing??
Sometimes they aren’t, it can depend a lot on the manufacturer and a lot of filtered water has minerals and salts added back in. As well as filtered water being often only filtered for a small amount of things whereas distilled water or reverse osmosis water is very pure
Awesome idea 💚💚😍💚💚
Feed me Seymour
I am building one of these right now except I put a nursery pot in the middle for the water. I know it takes up a lot of space but I like the look.
All the perlite will float to the top over time
Some perlite does float to the top over time, as it will in any soil mix 😊
Does it have to not have drainage holes?
This bog does not. We do have a video about draining bogs as well 😊
Is it real the venus flytrap behind of you? It's so big!
No, that's just a statue.
It’s a statue 😃
Feed me Seymour! 😂
Would this survive the north west
We’re in zone 9b for reference and the plants are quite happy 😊
