  • I visit Trecco Bay in the seaside town of Porthcawl South Wales, Trecco Bay is the biggest caravan park not only in the UK but in Europe too! Serving 50,000 people between the 13th of July and 23rd September, when the park re-opened after the pandemic. It has over 2000 caravans!
But what else is there on the biggest holiday park in the uk?
    Let's find out!

I went to Caister back in the '80s. The North Sea is a little unforgiving though. I was really very young when I went to Porthcawl and don't remember it a huge mount. With all the expansions and revamping that has been going on since Covid popped up I imagine a lot of changes have been happening through the older parks so I guess they all deserve a revisit at some point

That place is huge! It could do with a few less mobiles and a lot more trees though. It looks a bit like a storage yard from a distance.

Another interesting and informative video, thanks Tim. Talking of buying a caravan / Park home. My late Father did excatly that. Back in the late nineties when he retired, he sold his house, paid off the small amount of remaining mortage and bought a Park home in Scarborough (He was from Nottingham, but loved Scarborough as he used to go sailing there as a younger man) He could only live in it 11 months of the year, and had to vacate it every February so as he had a decent lump sum left from the house sale he used to go to Cyprus or Italy for the month, sometimes even as long as three months of the British winter, and he managed to do this right up until he passed away in 2013 when the money had run out, so no inheritence for me!.....and that's how it should be, it was his money he'd worked hard for it at a manual job all his life and I'm glad he got to enjoy it in the twilight of his life.....Love the channel Tim, keep up the good work fella!

I think a problem is most holiday parks there is the pitch fee and a 10/12 year age limit on caravans, though you can relocate your caravan often to the "2nd tier" parks for a bit more lease of life, then sell off for use as say construction site huts or go kart track control units ! Some really old caravans if maintained can be quite retro.

lovely story, but as said caravans are almost a life style choice....not many people have 60k to drop on a trailer van so get credit so say £500 a month, Then site fees another £500 a month plus water gas and leccy........its a thing of the past of them being cheap.......its almost only the wealthy that can afford them now.....And if you sell it....bang 20% goes back to the park as well...Move site? another 20%.
My mate had two on a site in kent and tried making it work with renting them out when he wasnt there etc.......HArd work for nothing......Summer time is ok but out of season its very hard to rent.....
Its more of a thing for retired people to do wh0 have lump sums .....then you only have the 500 a month site fees which are more manageable....

Wow. This has blown my mind. The progress made there is amazing. Hard to equate that park today with the same park I visited as a kid, with gas lights in the caravans, buckets for toilets in the caravans, which had to be slopped out in the mornings, in the community washrooms/toilets and nightly entertainment being the Dirty Duck and the Jolly Sailor.

We would all meet up in porthcawl from the valleys. And end up drinking in the Log cabin went drinking in the nightclub next door cannot remember the name of it now. My two mates Carl Turner and Ceri James ended up so drunk they had to call an Ambulance. They were mad times but happy times would not have changed it for anything. When your young you do not have a care in the world. Thanks for all the fun and laughter boys. Miss you both. Mark Jones😂❤

My neck of the woods Tim. Live about 20 miles away. I did not know all that stuff in the center existed. Used to be very run down and I think that is still reflected in the Coney Beach funfair at the entrance. The nearby town of Porthcawl remains a nice place to visit with decent shops, eateries and pubs. Many thanks.

Spent a week there in August and was impressed, did have some faults. Limited menu's in the restaurants, the show dome looks like a dump by the end of most nights as it gets rammed. Overall they do make far more effort than many other operators and the entertainments included some household names. Private renting is available and they will sell you 'access' to the facilities and entertainment for about £25 per person per week. We got the boy band '5' & Joe Pasqale, you might be luckier ;-)

Most of my childhood holidays were in a caravan. Used to go to South Denes caravan park in Lowestoft. Used to have gas lighting and lots of earwigs everywhere! Used to be fun though, there was a beach nearby, lovely gardens across the road and the Sparrows Nest Theatre as well as a bandstand which used to do talent comps in the summer for the kids......nightimes were walking from the site through the town and along the front for a back of chips and a play on the pennies, then back to the caravan for a cuppa and playing cards.....great days

Caravans have changed..back in the 60s down Brean Somerset as a young lad our borrowed caravan had no running water or toilet.had gas mantle lights..had to collect water from a stand pipe.the caravan always had that damp /gas light smell but it was a great holiday..not sure I'd want to go back to it now..maybe for the old arcades and greasy fish and chips with scraps remember them?😀😀😀

    Hello Tim,
Haven't been to that place in years, there's some nice pubs in the area around Nottage.
For those of a certain age, there used to be a couple of boozers on site, the Merry England and the Dirty Duck.
The caravans used to be a bit basic and the ground used to be covered in sand and stones. 👍

Wow, that was hooge! Like a small town. Just shows that when you own something, it is looked after better and stays looking nice. Some of my extended family are big caravaners (is that a word?) and they have ones like the one you featured, on a static site. It's a big part of their lives, and they love it. I however, remember the grot of the caravans we stayed in, in the 1970s, and it kind of never went away for me! Cheers, Tim, for another great vid.

Your only there for maybe a week or two so you don’t get too really know your neighbours or the neighbours you’ve just started chatting too upon your arrival their going home in two days so a few days later, they have gone and you’ve got a entirely new family in there. I suppose the caravan owners get too know each other as they spend months living in them out of season, but holiday makers are coming and going all the time. Stopped in Skegness caravan park last year, got chatting too the dad that evening seemed like a nice guy, went too bed on the night, by the time I woke up in the morning about 9am they had packed and left😂 by 1am another family was moving in. I thought I won’t make friends we we’ll be gone by the weekend ourselves😂

We live near Glasgow so wasn't too far to travel, maybe 6 hours with a decent break part way, and was pretty cheap too! 7 nights for 3 people and a dog for less than £400. Planning to go back a bit earlier in the season next time though as we went at the end of September and it was so bloody cold! Still went paddling in the north sea though. Was the dog's first time being on a beach and she loved it too!

Hi Tim, We love your videos (a family of 3 from Liverpool - two 45 year olds and a 9 year old) - we even watch them on UA-cam on our big TV so you must be entertaining! This was the first video of yours we watched a couple of months ago as we had already booked a holiday at Trecco Bay so wanted to see what it was like. Since then, my 9 year old keeps putting your videos on and we have all ended up getting into them. I love your videos of unusual places like the hotel in a prison in Cornwall, the tiny sleep pod in Gatwick Airport, the overnight train to Scotland, the motorhome (I've always wanted to stay in one) and the 7 star hotel in Dubai. Keep up the great work! x

That was a very interesting video . The caravans remind me of Richardsons caravans but a bit more classy, the whole area a superb really nice.

I once stayed in a log cabin that looked just like that Chapel, Tim. On a different note - You definitely need Google maps to negotiate your way around Trecco Bay. Great place and a great vid. 👍

One of my family members used to live in a caravan in Trecco Bay. She sold her bunglaow and bought 2 caravans, one for rental and one to live in. If I recall she used to live there 11 months of the year and had to go elsewhere for 1 month, usually she went overseas for a cheap holiday, I think it was to avoid council tax?
The rental caravan income used to cover the annual fees for both caravans and pay for her yearly holiday.
