"I reserve the right to be a grumpy old man when I want to" - ahah, classic.
Good review John. And yes, you are entitled to say as you please. We don't want any PC thank you. Just good old fashioned manners will do.
Hi John, just to say a heartfelt thanks for your reviews. They are always well researched, balanced, unbiased, and informative. Most of all you have a warm mischief which comes across as speaking to every guitarist irrespective of experience. This no doubt encourages us all to buy more Guitars (Which is a VERY good thing to do!) And yes I bought one of these, it`s tons of fun! Cheers Kevin
Thanks Kevin, much appreciated.
Lovely review, been looking for smthn quality like this to help me decide on this vs a regular classical guitar for me, mostly interested in playing unplugged at home
Thank you sir for showing us this guitar in depth
I saw another review of this guitar in which the reviewer played it through an overdrive pedal. It was surprisingly nice.
One of the best reviews of this guitar, thanks!!!
Glad you liked it!
We need more critical reviews of Harley Bentons like this. Intonation is really great, though, which is almost all that matters for a guitar like this. thanks
August, What a lovely song, thank you for sharing.
Thanks Andrew
Love you videos 👍 I have the same guitar at home and it sounds awesome. 😉
Perfect demo for me. Folk singer songwriter. Thinking about going all nylon
Just saw one on ebay which caught my interest. So glad I saw this review first!
Perfect! Answered my question. What it sounds like unplugged.
hello, on your komentar I have also ordered this guitar from thomann and I'm waiting eagerly for you to arrive this week, thank you for the good tip, Jeff
My 'Nashville ' is on it's way ! Due 11/22 😁
Nice review
Sounds nice !
Thank you!
Bravo John
Many thanks.
Thanks! You make it sound so good. Best review of this guitar on the Tube. Two questions: Is the fretboard radiused? And, what type of amp are you playing it through?
There is a slight curve on the fret board. I am playing straight into a Tascam 8 track with a little reverb added.
Wonderful review.. Gibson Chet Atkins CEC mated a Taylor on their romantic Beijing vacay. .BTW, how long have you been Paul McCartney's grandad?
Thank you John for the clear and fair review. I play a lot of fingerstyle on electric so in theory this kind of guitar should suit me, but Im not sure if I will like nylon strings.
The only down side to nylon strings is if you have to replace one, it will take a week to settle in! I usually change the treble strings once a year and the bases twice a year.
The only useful video about this guitar, ol sold , for the price it’s not bad, my traditional female do guitar it’s too expensive to take it outside, this one will take some beating without problem! Thanks again
Glad I could help Jason.
watched your video again 3rd time and yes budget priced and you get what you pay for BUT have jumped in and ordered one i love the idea of a solid body nylon semi acoustic i have steel strung acoustic taking lessons to learn I'm not a classical player but wanted a nylon string
I am sure you will enjoy it Johnathan.
@@JohnCouplandguitar thank you for the support
@@JohnCouplandguitar it also takes age and experience to give a honest review all the young what is thrash and heavy dive bombs when i was 18 i liked it but 50 years on my music has mellowed and yes i can get grumpy aswell L.O.L all the best
hey mr couplandd i put money down on a fender amp. looks better than my acoustic amp. thanks
Hi John, If you were to replace the machine heads, what would be your recommendation? I'd played the HB Nashville a few years ago. I felt it was decent, especially given the price, it's definitely value for money. I'd think 45mins with a good Luthier and a few quid invested, this could make a fun addition for any guitarist to have.
Schaller are the obvious choice but if you are looking for something less expensive here is something to watch. A lot of Chinese heads are described as 'Classic.' That may not mean 'Classical,' and could include sets that are for steel string guitars as their photos do not always show the rollers clearly.
"Action was optimistically low" haha that made me laugh. I love that the intonation was displayed. That b string was certainly off a bit. How would you adjust intonation on a saddle bridge like that?
You would need to add a compensated saddle and hope for the best.
Hi john, the paper under the bridge,if the bridge was flush to the body the strings wound not thread through and tie, only going from as i see it,,maybe im wrong just an observation.love the videos.🤘
How much is the weigh? Roughfly 2 kg.
Thanks for a nice review and song.
Great review and very nice presentation of the guitar! I have a question since I am a left handed player. This guitar is not available in left handed version, so I was wondering if the knobs would be a problem under my hand while playing the other way around. What's your opinion?
It might be a little awkward but I have seen Paul McCartney playing a right handed bass turned upside down so it can be done. Removing the knobs and leaving the spindles bare might help.
Good idea! Thank you very much!
Hello sir.Can you tell me about tuning stability, and intonation all over the neck,is this anywhere good for professional standards?I want to buy it and play it live.Greetings
The intonation is very good even when using a capo. The machine heads are rubbish and will probably need replaced with a higher quality set. Although the tone range is very wide, the useful tone range is quite limited but you can get a decent sound out of it.
John Coupland Thank you very much
Gibson Chet Atkins CEC mated a Taylor.
Esta guitarra no la están fabricando ¿habrá que esperar? O alguien me puede recomendar otra parecida.
Muchas gracias por su ayuda.

Neither guitar seems to be in stock.
Hello. I just received one and it seems that it has too much gain. I can't turn the volume all the way up. It distorts. The sound is pleasant at at 1/10 knob. Any suggestions?
What amp are you using and what are its settings?
@@JohnCouplandguitar I plugged into a 20 watt Marshall, clean channel, all setting in middle position. Thank you for the quick reply. By the way, I like very much your videos, and your accent :) you are very welcome if you come to Madeira island
Hey thanks for the invite! Regarding the amp there are a few things you can try. 1:- keep the volume on the guitar at about 3 or 4 and see if that helps. 2:- Use the overdrive channel keeping the gain low at around 2 and raise the master volume until you get a reasonable sound. 3:- Get a small mixer to go between the guitar and the amp. One of these should work.
@@JohnCouplandguitar thanks again. Now I am using it through a p.a., and I keep the guitar volume at half. I might change the knob for one with numbers in it. Other problem is that I think the first 3 strings play at a much lower volume than the top 3... But as you say, it's a budget instrument so we have to deal with some little problems here and there
Today, Saturday 22nd February 2020 I'm considering buying the cheaper version of this for £82(from Thomann UK online) to get back into playing some of my favourite classical pieces without spending a fortune on guitars like I used too, way back in the 1980s, when I played for approximately 30-40 hours a week!
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Ultimately i want a classical guitar with " True Temperament" frets, as I've always found the guitair's tuning discrepancies rather annoying.
Great channel 👍😀
Respect from
John in Hampshire
Thanks for your comments John. I am dubious concerning the true temperament idea, it is likely to play beautifully in one key but pretty naff in anything else.
How did you find the nut width John...I understand it is a bit less wide than standard?...great reviews by the way
Just perfect.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Thanks John,,its a toss up between this one and the EKO NXT Nylon
hello has the fretboard a slight radius or is it flat??
The one I had was flat. I say this because of the way that different batches of guitars can come from different factories and details such as this may vary. Thomann once sent me a matt finish guitar which turned out to be high gloss.
Great review and nice channel! What about the thickness of the neck? Is more similar to an acoustic guitar or to a traditional classic guitar?
It is about half way between the two at 48 mm and quite shallow.
@@JohnCouplandguitar thanks a lot. One last question: is the body semi-hollow or is it completely solid?
@@Derveregun It is completely solid. It does however make enough noise to practice unplugged.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Thank you!
Thanks for a good review. Looks and sounds like a good cross over nylon guitar! The intonation is not good. Probably easy to fix (file). But I am just a bit sceptic that the saddle looks to be too straight..?
I always have to fix the intonation on nylon strings, even expensive ones has bad intonation from the factory. The nut could probably also be sanded down a bit. If the tuning goes completely wild when using a capo, the nut height may not be correct (too high). I would by one, if a 2.hand came up for sale here. Greetings from Norway :)
“I reserve the right to be a grumpy old man when I want to”
Hello John, do you know how much weights the guitar, aprox.?
I no longer own this guitar but it was equal to an SG.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Thank you John!
hi..is there a way I can contact you regarding the reason you no linger own this guitar..I would give you my email with your permission
I just found I was not using it that much. I got distracted by a second hand Alhambra 7P.
@@JohnCouplandguitar thanks..I am thinking of getting one but read you got rid of yours and was wondering if it was cause of that bridge you could slip a sheet of pape under..maybe the bridges on this model have a knack of separating from the soundboard
@@daynenobodyIV There was no sign of movement but it did seem worth mentioning in the review.
Could I put steel strings on this guitar
With a conventional classical the answer would be, 'No.' With this one I would say, 'Maybe.' The issue is whether the bridge will pull off under the grater strain of the steel strings. The neck will probably start to pull forward but this could be cured by adjusting the truss rod. If you are yet to buy the guitar then the good news is that HB do make a steel string version. It can be found at the Thomann web site.
@@JohnCouplandguitar Many thanks for your reply...appreciate it,...I'm also looking at the Stratacoustic (Fender)...have you any experience with it.
I have not tried one of these yet but it is on my wish list.
Can you review an MR classical flaminco guitar one day?
Most of the guitars I review come from pupils but as I have now retired from teaching that source has dried up. I am unlikely to come across any flamenco guitars within my friends or family but if I do then I will certainly review them. Thanks for the suggestion.
Roughfly in kg I mean to say....
About the same as a Strat, less than a Les Paul.
Ok,, Thanks very much.
You said ...as you can see .....but the quality of the video is bad , that I can't see !!!
7 minutes of talking and a poor sounding guitar at 7 minutes in ? No.
