Christy Moore - Viva la Quinta Brigada. Live at Barrowland Glasgow
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 тра 2011
- Around the time I saw the light of morning
A comradeship of heroes was laid
From every corner of the world came sailing
The Fifty International Brigade.
They came to stand beside the Spanish people
To try and stem the rising fascist tide
Franco's allies were the powerful and wealthy
Frank Ryan's men came from the other side.
Even the olives were bleeding
As the battle for Madrid it thundered on
Truth and love against the force of evil
Brotherhood against the fascist clan.
Chorus:
Viva la Quinta Brigada,
No Pasaran, the pledge that made them fight
Adelante was the cry around the hillside
Let us all remember them tonight.
Bob Hilliard was a Church of Ireland pastor
Form Killarney across the Pyrenees he came
From Derry came a brave young Christian Brother
And side by side they fought and died in Spain.
Tommy Woods age seventeen died in Cordoba
With Na Fianna he learned to hold his gun
From Dublin to the Villa del Rio
He fought and died beneath the Spanish sun.
(Chorus)
Many Irishmen heard the call of Franco
Joined Hitler and Mussolini too
Propaganda from the pulpit and newspapers
Helped O'Duffy to enlist his crew.
The call came from Maynooth, "support the facists"
The men of cloth had failed yet again
When the Bishops blessed the Blueshirts in Dun Laoghaire
As they sailed beneath the swastika to Spain.
(Chorus)
This song is a tribute to Frank Ryan
Kit Conway and Dinny Coady too
Peter Daly, Charlie Regan and Hugh Bonar
Though many died I can but name a few.
Danny Boyle, Blaser-Brown and Charlie Donnelly
Liam Tumilson and Jim Straney from the Falls
Jack Nalty, Tommy Patton and Frank Conroy
Jim Foley, Tony Fox and Dick O'Neill.
(Chorus repeated)
You, people of Ireland, will never been forget. Your blood is in our soul. I´m from Spain
Thank you sir.
@Poison Chang don't know what does it means 'div', sorry
God bless dá Spanish 🇮🇪
God bless you mo cara

I’m from Ireland living in California, that was a war that would have been a proud battle scar. Fighting for the poor workers in Spain against the fascists
From a grandson of an antifascist fighter in the Aragon front (wounded twice), all I can say is 'Smrt fašizmu, sloboda narodu!'. Glory to the Yugoslav partisans and to all partisans from all over the planet.

My grandpa (may heaven keep his soul) was a Catalan Republican who fought against Franco's troops for 17 months in a fecking trench with water up to the knee, then he was captured and put in a concentracion camp. He managed to escape and walked back home, more than 1.000 km through forests and mountains. He told me how he fought alongside Canadian, American and Irish folks. Thank yous for your service, for fighting side by side with me 19 year old grandad, trying to keep the fascists away from my land. Forever grateful to those brave people. @@GerryBolger Thank you very much, he was a hero at least to me, and I loved him so much. He got a medal from the Republican Government during war for "bravery in time of need", for securing the supplies during an airstrike, but when the fascists got in power they stripped him of it.

Greetings from ireland,
I have endless respect for the struggles of Irish Republicans who fought for independence just as the Spanish and Catalan people fought for freedom from Fascism. This is an incredible song so rich and full of raw history.
with the help of the irish
what it doesnt say is how much of a mess the republicans were in due ro the NKVD interferance.

Per capita Scotland contributed most to the international brigades.
As long as I know, Catalan people are Spanish people too. Sadly for the Republic's fate, Catalonia fought its own Civil War between fascists, republicans and left-revolutionaries until 1937... And Barcelona didn't try to resist as Madrid did for three years, even with the european conflict so near which, as president Negrín said, will force France and the UK to join the fight in Spain. Anyway, all our gratitude to the people who came from all over the world just to help and fight against fascism on this lost nook. Maybe one of the greatest solidarity fact, it will never be a defeact while some of us will still be remembering them.
