Luke the minstrel boy had THE HONOUR to see him a few times often you could hear a pin drop when the MASTER was performing. Wish you well in Holland ❣️❣️
This song was written by Phil Coulter who lived a short distance from where I grew up. He is five years older than me but I remember he passed our house daily on his way to St Columb's College. Consequently, the words of the song mean so much to me. I regard it as the best song ever written.
Celt music is very raw and truthful….my father and mother were immigrants to England, from Ireland. I was born here I. 1962, and spoke English easyish….but my parents were Gaelic…. Discrimination was hard for my parents, but they worked hard and the English people welcomed them with open arms. English people are honest with immigrants so long as you are honest and want to fit in….you must work hard like they do and not expect no favours. Don’t take the piss and they will respect you…

My thanks will always be towards the Czech government after WW2 for their aid to Israel after an embargo against Israel was set up that nobody was allowed to sell Israel arms to protect themselves from the onslaught 1947. That conflict, as can be seen today hasn't ended. As an Irishman said all of the Earth belongs to Ireland but Israel is Ireland's heart and soul.
Over here in Kyoto Japan... Just back from an Irish bar watching the rugby. Nothing you want more when your a 1000 miles from home than then the rasp of old Luke ringing in your ears 💪🇮🇪

Luke kelly just had that voice they pulled the truth out of thin air. He could sing a light through all the darkness and bring all Ireland together, even it only for a few minutes. When you hear Luke or Ronnie, you're hearing the best and worst of boundless Irish hearts shouting and screaming and finding their place in your heart.
Powerful voice. I cry every time I hear this song because of how accurate it is to the events that took place and the slaughter of Irish men woman and children. R.I.P Luke you were and always will be a legend
My first musical love was The Dubliners. I would have been around 4 when I played their tapes over and over. I knew them as the orange (Polydor) tapes then. Unfortunately, Luke Died when I was 12. I can't think of a group I would rather see live - if only I could travel back in time.
All of these men except John Sheehan & Sean Cannon have passed now. Only the recent additions into the last iteration (prior to 2o1o?) and now form the tribute band Dublin Legends. Great music is left but only their music & our memories of them remain - they are at Fiddler’s Green.
The late Luke Kelly was singer with a great voice who gave performances filled with passion. Thanks to him and The Dubliners for the music from a Scottish fan.
I'm a Proud Irish American Man - from the country here in Maryland , and when I see how they've "cityfied" my old home town , this song rings in my heart
Luke had the unique ability to put emotion into every word he sang. This is a sad strained song and from the begining you can hear both of those things in his voice. I wish i was alive to see the man. Met a few lads who heard him in concerts and in sessions. From what i can gather, the recordings dont do him justice. Passion for this music was something Luke was just able to put across to the listener. I doubt we will ever see another like him
I just told my mother that this song makes me think of our people. So much is lost and gone forever, but I remember Grandpa would've sang songs like this. No matter where ye roam. And far from Ireland though we may be, we'll make it back one day. We're going home.
@@shanejones7876 i dunno the fellas who toured doing a Dubliners tribute band recently did a damn good job Luke or not. The lead is an older man who grew up with Phil Coulter's kids, so he has that link to put everything he has into the song. And ill be damned if he didnt do it justice
Luke had something wonderful in his voice. He was able to transmit all the memory and nostalgia that irish people have about their history. He has something broken in his voice that just tears you apart. I'm from Argentina and I lived in Ireland for a couple of years. I fell in love with the irish music and literature since the very beginning
Look up his last performance ever. Very emotional heartfelt performance. Poor guy was wearing a hat onstage to hide the disfigurement to his head. Was in Germany, he was only fit for half the show. The other guys were very professional, but if you look closely you can see their emotions as well.
I know this song is practically a Phil Coulter's memory of Derry, but it really transcends all borders and everyone can in one way or the other relate to it. That is why this song will always be relevant and "modern" even though it is already about half a century old. Well done mr. Coulter and well done Luke. If it wasnt't for Luke I don't know if it would generate that kind of "notoriety" and fame. R.i.p. Luke, you are one of the greatest ever.
Absolutely...like every song he sang! This, Scorn, Raglan Road etc etc......he has the definitive version of anything he touched. What a talent...what a man...
I've been following Lukes songs for 16 years after seeing an Irish girl sing a couple in Tenerife . Luke is probably the most passionate singer I have ever seen , just awesome and I will never ever stop listening to his songs !!

you can see that they are sweating heavily in every concert. this was for a tv recording in belgium (in front of a terrible, terrible audience), so the lights for tv gave them some extra sweats. i think (but of course could be mistaken) he was in an angry mood, trying to get the audience to clap along for a few songs before this one and the audience only followed for a few seconds (they seemed to be rather the opera viewers then irish folk). he closed the gig by saying "i hope you enjoyed it as much as we did" and i'm sure that was quite ironical. but i assume he was just in the right mood for this song, passion mixed with some anger and frustration. incredible performance as always from them and him. he had so much more to give, shame he passed away so early. :-/
