I'm an Englishman in my mid-sixties and I have wonderful memories of Paddy lodgers in our poor house working on the M1. Wow! That was around 1960. Such wonderful men. Big and joyful. Generous and gifted with life. Making money through hard work and a future unfolding. They reckoned the digs were the best this side of the water. I reckon their company was one of the best things in my life.
The Irish are grafters never acted like the world owed them anything went out and worked hard and gave half the money back into the economy through the pubs

Come me little son And I will tell you what we'll do Undress yourself and get into bed And a tale I'll tell to you It's all about your daddy He's a man you seldom see For he has to roam, far away from home Away from you and me Remember laddie, he's still your dad Though he's working far away In the cold and heat, all the hours of the week On England's motorway Now when you fall and hurt yourself And get at feeling bad It isn't any good To go running for your dad For the only time since you've were born He's had to spend with you He was out on the job, and we hadn't a bob He was signing on the brew Remember laddie, he's still your dad Though he's working far away In the cold and heat, all the hours of the week On England's motorway Sure we'd like your daddy here Yes sure it would be fine To have him working nearer home And to see him all the time But beggars can't be choosers And we have to bear our load For we need the money your daddy earns A-workin' on the road Remember laddie, he's still your dad And he's soon be home to stay For a week or two, with me and you When he's built the motorway

+Hugh Treanor There's a fair few. You're hard pressed to fine many as good as Ireland's but there are a few. I don't normally check where in England they're from so I'm not certain which are from the north apart from the ones from my area. One of my favourites is The Maid in the Calico Dress tidido.com/a35184373604561/al55d5f1a913b521ef223393c3/t55d5f1a913b521ef22339402 It's no Irish jig but I like it and it helps to remind me of home when I'm out of the country.
@ScottKilbourn That's lovely to hear you say something like this, the irish are very talented about singing about emotional traumas and how it can affect them, and this is such a beautiful song by L Kelly RIP !
My boyfriend is irish... we were long distance for awhile and he sent me this and I instantly felt homesick... homesick for a place I hadn't been yet... knew then and there I was never gonna leave when I visited...
My Dad worked on the -Preston by pass- which became the M6 Englands first motorway and my eldest brother was a labourer,so this song is about us I suppose( well that is what I think).
It is about all of us who had to leave, back in the sad days when our economy was in bad shape. One of the best things about the last two decades is that emigration from Ireland is no longer compulsory. A child born today can expect to get their education to graduate level in Ireland, and can have their entire career in the country if they want. They DON'T have to leave... That is a paradigm shift in Irish culture. And I speak as someone who spent nearly half my life in other countries...
Spent a month cycling to and from Hospital waiting on and helping my father pass on by and die. Always thought he hated me Till I spent those hard weeks days And hour's by his side till his end. I knew without the use of words That no matter what life we waste He still loved me as I loved him. Forgive and Love One Another ❇ Commands Thy L-rd Thou One True G-d
Make Our Father Who is Above Us And Who is Within Us PROUD. By making the first move towards you're earthly father. Be persistent and remain patient with him Be the bigger person if need be. Time to lesson the regrets that we may have in the future. Build that body Build that mind Build that soul Behold

These lyrics were written by Ewan Maccoll for his BBC Radio Ballad program "Song of a Road", about the construction of the M1 motorway in Britain in the late 1950's. Most of the workers on that job were Irish or Eastern European guest workers who faced horrible exploitation. Luke Kelly, God and Marx rest his soul, truly does it justice here.

I heard this out of the blue one day in 2010, my son's dad had moved to England, literally working on the roads and I followed in 2012 as a QS and never looked back. We are no longer together but I will never forget the sadness the day he left, the day this played in Dunnes when I was doing my shopping and was crying in the aisles, the crying I did locking my door in Sligo for the last time and the joy of unlocking the house I've bought in England. I can get home quicker from Luton quicker than my sister can from Dublin. Ireland never looked after her son's, it's as sad today as it was 10 years ago and 40 years before that

My dad was a truck driver that was never home unless he was angry or drunk or usually both. Still this song makes me weep like a baby and I don't know if I'll ever stop weeping at the mention of my father. I love him, hate him, respect him, and want to be jut like him, except for the ways I'm just like him. Just like every son and his father I suppose.

What a song, what a voice! Many memories of listening to Luke & the Dubliners with my dad when I was a boy...🐻
I have the same memory mate also with my grandfather and my 4year old son is listening to them with me now..
I'm so blessed to be a father working from home, it's really priceless. But still I live on a foreign soil and this song rings true when I think of being away from my own father and family. Here's to all the fathers and little ones separated, whatever the reason may be, may love bridge the divide
I didn't work on a motorway but sums up my ungrateful kids given my need to work away. Thanks for uploading.
Maybe they love to have you home
Reminds me so much of my Dad, this song. Worked for years on the gas, travelling up and down the M1. xx
This song is a true reflection on my life totally beautiful song that hits home for so many Irish men. And I'm sure other men from other country's to that have had to move away because off work and getting off the dole. But at the price off your family suffering with out you. Luke your a true hero. R.I.P
I am from Newfoundland and it home with me I had to go a way
Come me little son
And I will tell you what we'll do
Undress yourself and get into bed
And a tale I'll tell to you
It's all about your daddy
He's a man you seldom see
For he has to roam, far away from home
Away from you and me
Remember laddie, he's still your dad
Though he's working far away
In the cold and heat, all the hours of the week
On England's motorway
Now when you fall and hurt yourself
And get at feeling bad
It isn't any good
To go running for your dad
For the only time since you've were born
He's had to spend with you
He was out on the job, and we hadn't a bob
He was signing on the brew
Remember laddie, he's still your dad
Though he's working far away
In the cold and heat, all the hours of the week
On England's motorway
Sure we'd like your daddy here
Yes sure it would be fine
To have him working nearer home
And to see him all the time
But beggars can't be choosers
And we have to bear our load
For we need the money your daddy earns
A-workin' on the road
Remember laddie, he's still your dad
And he's soon be home to stay
For a week or two, with me and you
When he's built the motorway
My tears falling on my face. I Love so much This beautiful music sung by Luke. It's so magical. My feelings for him. We miss this Great Irish Man. He fought with with SONGS for Better Days in the wolrd. 🎶🎶🎶😘😗😙💖🎵🎶🎼🥂 RIP Luke Kelly and the Dubliners! GOD BLESS OUR IRELAND 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪

God bless you Daisy dear....wonder post you made few months back. Very personal...so kind. I have learned this song and now working on the banjo arrangement. Your post is so encouraging for my learning. God bless Luke, look down and protect us. God rest my hero. Thank you again Daisy x
@@heardashot Dear Heardashot we share the ideas and feelings about Luke. For us, sure he continue alive in our memories and our hearts. His voice is so powerful and has such energy that's resound in our minds. It's totally impossible forget him. Everynight I use listen his songs like my " magical " ritual. And some times I can't listen his songs I'm very very sad almost depressive. How his voice is so magical like a strong and delicious Spell!? Answer me?!
Kelly, years ago i asked you for a copy of this album for my young autistic son.
Your an angel in disguise, he is 18yrs old now ADORES Luke Kelly and recites his songs verbatim this is a child they told us he was not going to speak.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤
How strange, I only just read your original message to me last week, made my heart smile as much last week as it did years ago. ❤️
i left the uk long ago when i was 13 im from north of england and i love the folk songs of irelaland and scotland and northern uk the sound is something i will treausure ...im65 now left in 1963
+John Buckley Q. What folk songs are there from the north of England?
+Hugh Treanor There's a fair few. You're hard pressed to fine many as good as Ireland's but there are a few. I don't normally check where in England they're from so I'm not certain which are from the north apart from the ones from my area. One of my favourites is The Maid in the Calico Dress

It's no Irish jig but I like it and it helps to remind me of home when I'm out of the country.
+Hugh Treanor This one is actually. Even McColl wrote it when he lived in Northern England.
James Dolan the maid in the calico dress is from the Lancashire poet Henry Butter put to music I believe by Danny Doyle!
sorry Henry Nutter
luke Kelly what I guy, this makes me miss home. in England building at the mo and cant wait to get home for xmas, just a few weeks to go!
The voice of a legend, only wish I had been alive to have seen him live.
Awe inspiring as always; Luke's voice is timeless. 6 stars to this video if I could.
Luke Kelly was a true Bard...a keeper of the history of Ireland. He does deeply touch the soul
@ScottKilbourn That's lovely to hear you say something like this, the irish are very talented about singing about emotional traumas and how it can affect them, and this is such a beautiful song by L Kelly RIP !
one of the best songs by luke kelly.brings tears to my eyes every time i hear it
My boyfriend is irish... we were long distance for awhile and he sent me this and I instantly felt homesick... homesick for a place I hadn't been yet... knew then and there I was never gonna leave when I visited...
My Dad worked on the -Preston by pass- which became the M6 Englands first motorway and my eldest brother was a labourer,so this song is about us I suppose( well that is what I think).
Its about all of us working class irish(English) were all forgotten these days even though the country would fall apart without us
It is about all of us who had to leave, back in the sad days when our economy was in bad shape.
One of the best things about the last two decades is that emigration from Ireland is no longer compulsory.
A child born today can expect to get their education to graduate level in Ireland, and can have their entire career in the country if they want. They DON'T have to leave...
That is a paradigm shift in Irish culture.
And I speak as someone who spent nearly half my life in other countries...
whenever I hear Luke Kelly I come to think of my father, who was a big fan of Luke.
God bless them both.
One of the world's most amazing singer.
dont get on with me father and havnt for a long long time but this reminds me of the good happy times and how precious life is
Hopefully yous can work it all out someday.
Spent a month cycling to and from
Hospital waiting on and helping my father pass on by and die.
Always thought he hated me
Till I spent those hard weeks days
And hour's by his side till his end.
I knew without the use of words
That no matter what life we waste
He still loved me as I loved him.
Forgive and Love One Another ❇
Commands Thy L-rd Thou One True G-d
Make Our Father Who is Above Us
And Who is Within Us PROUD.
By making the first move towards you're earthly father.
Be persistent and remain patient with him
Be the bigger person if need be.
Time to lesson the regrets that we may have in the future.
Build that body
Build that mind
Build that soul

Cant believe you lot. God bless you all for your comments and for kelly for posting these amazing vids. My mum loved this song. I have been a fan of all the Dubs since 1967. Great to hear you young uns love this music.
What a fabulous voice---we miss you, Luke!
Oh yes for sure we do
These lyrics were written by Ewan Maccoll for his BBC Radio Ballad program "Song of a Road", about the construction of the M1 motorway in Britain in the late 1950's. Most of the workers on that job were Irish or Eastern European guest workers who faced horrible exploitation. Luke Kelly, God and Marx rest his soul, truly does it justice here.
What a song, what a singer, Irish soul ,
The most brilliant set of vocal chords anybody was blessed to have
Hits home for me I have two boys and a little girl on the way and being an active duty Marine takes me away from home alot and leaves the raising of my children to a proud strong woman that is my wife
FairPlay lad I'm sure there proud
God be with you man, stay safe and look forward coming home to your kids.
🙏
Get home safe, love from Ireland.
I chat to a bird in Arizona who's divorced from her military husband, Iraq changed him, he's stationed in Georgia, I sent her this song as a way to help her teach their son why daddy isn't there. Don't let war fuck your family up.
ive been a fan for 40 years and my new wife just 4 and already she has seen the Dubs in Hamburg, Dublin and Kent. never get tired of listening to them. pure magic.

I lived in London for 11 years and moved back New Years Eve 2018. I've never looked back and now enjoy a beautiful simple life on the West Coast of Ireland. Bliss. I am very grateful for the beauty that surrounds me.

Oh we know...
When I was little, this song reminded me of my dad, who I never got to see. Luke Kelly is one of my favorite singers of all time, and I've always loved to hear his songs. Thanks for puttin this up kellyoneill
Tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat.
Ireland never looked after her son's, it's as sad today as it was 10 years ago and 40 years before that
Luke Kelly, 1940 - 1984
_You've come of age in death,_
_Keeper of a golden key;_
_Forever young, since you_
_Abandoned time,_
_While we've aged visibly_
_Weathering the scar._
_We linger in your shadow,_
_While you have risen_
_To a new consciousness_
_Where music is imagined, and words_
_Are scattered among the stars._
-John Sheahan, 2005
My dad was a truck driver that was never home unless he was angry or drunk or usually both. Still this song makes me weep like a baby and I don't know if I'll ever stop weeping at the mention of my father. I love him, hate him, respect him, and want to be jut like him, except for the ways I'm just like him. Just like every son and his father I suppose.
