Angle grinder will def, help with hard outer scale,,,if the casting is chilled, I sometimes throw them in the woodh eater over night , the heating , n slow cooling usualy softens thenu p so they machine nice, Just toss them in, bank the fire, pull out next morning, good to go
Hello. So I have been watching your videos for a couple of days after subscribing and I must say I love what you are doing. Where can I buy plans to start with my son and build this steam engine?
I love this build and have been following it. Would it help at all to hit the flanges with a flap wheel on a grinder to kind of take the high spots and that skin off before you go after it with the lathe? I just think it might help with the interrupted cuts. Awesome job :)

Yup! I try to do that, but the surface is always a bit "wavy" and there is always some kind of interrupted cut. But it certainly helps a lot.
Do you not have any way to anneal it? Probably could do it in a charcoal grill.
