There's a King Tiger in this museum and a second was also on loan and display there recently and may still be there. They used the Maybach engine from the museum's one to run this Tiger 1. I'm guessing that one day they'll also run their King Tiger. There's a working King Tiger at a museum in France. A UK collector also has a project to rebuild one in running condition from recovered parts. There is at least one other restoration to running order project and a number of others in museums. Surviving vehicles/projects are listed here:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_II
Since everybody else is giving an opinion of the Tiger, I might as well contribute: The Tiger is a good tank with a few caveats. It had a powerful gun and good armour, so of course it was a formidable opponent against any other tank on the battlefield, but with its high fuel consumption, mechanical issues and slow traversing, the Tiger was not good on the offensive.
the Tiger had not more reliablity issues than other ww2 tank...in fact it was much more reliable than the russian T-34 which was other than propaganda claimed a pack full of failures on tracks... engine lifetime often ends after 30hours of use... the ammount of tanks that left the factory without any major issue was at 8% at war begin and improved to 25% by war end...means 75% of all T-34 left factory with a major failure that needed to be fixed by field mechanics befor it could run into battle... and btw... two T-34 already consume more than one Tiger... and need twice the number of crew and are not equal as good. Germanys biggest handicap was the constant lack of fuel ...Germany lost most of its tanks because they run out of fuel... not because of enemy action or mechanical failure... btw the most unreliable tanks of ww2 were all british used during the africa campain were many broke down befor they emptyed their first tank of fuel
@@nagmashot the Tiger 1 was moderately reliable, but it was very difficult to maintain and repair. Stuff such as it's interleaving roadwheels and it's transmission WORKED decently, but when it was time to repair or service it, the Germans just couldn't do it.
@@SVNLVN utterly crap claim... you did not even notice that the Germans changed the roadwheel design (which was adressed to the fact that Germany lacked rubber for wide road wheels, they used synthetic rubber which had a very poor lifetime).... they changed the layout of the roadwheels and the roadwheel design from Schachtellaufwerk to Staffellaufwerk... wich was later used at the Tiger2 and planed for the Panther 2. With a Staffellaufwerk there was no need to unscrew the outer wheels for train transport and getting access to the inner wheels was less time consuming. Allied after war reports claimed something different ... in a frensh report they claimed the German maintenance units did magic to keep the Panther tsnks rolling taken into account under what conditions they had to work...and no there was nothing a field shop could not repair...expect a totaly destroyed tank... replacing a transmission engine gun optics radio etc. was their daily bussiness
Tigers in all it's variants where not ment to run after other armored vehicles, they had to support the smaller tanks from a distance or ambush transfering columns of armored vehicles sitting in bushes
The Tiger was the prematurely born parent of all main battle tanks. They forced the Allies to produce Tiger killers at a great research and developement cost just to counter a single threat. A good strategy it also set the bar for the next generation of MBT"s
Nope and double nope. It was designed as a heavy break trough tank pushed into the general battle tank role due to necessity. The allies didn't counter a single threat, they realized that "oh shit tank design is really accelerating we need better stuff NOW" just like every other participant of WW2.
Secure White Existence I agree. Others say the Panther but you’re right on with your assessment. Look at all MBTs now and they are all heavily armored and armed and weigh in the same ballpark as the Tiger.
@Secure White Existence It's role was not anti air. It had a MG34 for self defence, whose 7.92 mauser ammunition was not very effective against contemporary fighters and fighter-bombers.
I'd argue medium tanks like the Sherman, PzIV and T34 were actually the grandfathers of the MBT's. A good, balanced mix of armor, firepower and mobility. Versatility, reliability and commonality. In the 50's tank development reached a point where armor advances couldn't keep up with the advances in ammunition. Armor plates rapidly became obsolete, instead designers went in the direction of mobility to avoid being hit altogether. This is also the time where the traditional heavy tanks like the IS-series went out of favor while the medium tanks of the day (T54/55 to keep with my Russian example) slotted into the MBT role and were further developed in this direction.
@Secure White Existence They weren't intended to when they entered service. Like I mentioned, the medium tank only really evolved into the MBT in the 50's with the rise of ATGM and discarding sabot, which made heavy tanks obsolete in an instant. Still, even in WW2 there's a very clear change for the medium tank across the board, later versions of which were all fitted with long-barrel high velocity guns to better be able to deal with enemy armor. Because even if they weren't originally intended to, they still ended up in tank on tank combat sometimes. Also, it should be noted that even today an MBT's main role isn't engaging enemy tanks, it's main role is still punching holes and exploiting them. Taking out the enemy's tanks by way of air, artillery or infantry using ATGM's is often much more (cost) effective than entering a slugging match. However this doesn't mean a tank shouldn't be equiped to deal with other tanks and do it well.
Tiger1 tank:Hi leopard 1 and 2. You two know me? Leopard 1 and 2 tanks: Yes, you are one of our grandfathers :) Tiger1 tank: Yes my dear grandchildren, and thank you so much for remembering us always in good. You are really honourful children to us
Fury brought me here. The Tiger 1 is surely larger than the Sherman tanks, but the 131 didn't look much smaller compared to its successors, specifically the Leopard 2 (which the GTA V Rhino is based on). That vintage WWII monster sure holds up well considering its age.
Watching this Tiger now, in 2019, I find it rather hard to believe that in fact it is a 1943 beast...! One could assume it's a late '90s or early 2000s design...! so different from the rest of the WW2 armor crap of the Allied nations.

A lot easier to get the drop on the bad guys if they don’t hear you. In fact the AGT-1500 gas turbine in the M1 Abrams was virtually whisper quiet, hence how it got the nickname ‘Whispering Death’.
@@Mrbimmer11 Nope. No turbo. Just the 60 degrees V 12 engine in 2 variants : early variant 650 hp 21 liter aluminum engine block, later variant 700 hp 24 liter cast-iron engine block. Only some aviation engines had turbo at that time.

Yes, but the cost was extremely high. German tanks from 1944 - 1945 used to cost four, up to nine times more than an American Sherman and the soviet T-34 and at the end of the day, Allied quantity and reliability defeated German industrial quality. The only German design that could be considered a blunder was the infamous "Elephant", chiefly because it was severely underpowered and mechanically unreliable.
British, americans and russians are saying the german tanks of wermacht are not war machines THEY ARE MONSTERS. Some soldiers have deep fear and panic while facing tigers or panther tanks. Is the only part an allie soldier wiil shout loud "TIGER" "PANTHER TANK"
@Oliver Viehland Hmmm,.. alot of people insisting that the Tiger tank has this weak drivetrain. Yet,..it didn't break , did it ? Also , isn't the gearbox an automatic ? Also, where did you learn to drive a Tiger tank ? I mean , I drive trucks and I used to drive APC (439) when I was in the army, way back when, so I guess you could say I'm a professional driver with a little experience on tracked vehicles, and I wouldn't go criticizing this guys performance. Not that I've ever driven an actual tank or anything , I've never touched a chieftain or a challenger for instance. So it does seem a bit strange you telling everyone how to drive a tiger tank, to me at least..
Diving with the sprockets at the back end of the driving direction, keeps the tracks tensioned under the vehicle. This will extend the livespan of the tracks. I think the cause for sprockets at front end of older tanks was the simpler steering construction. The driver sat at the front. Sorry for the bad english.
You can imagine, taking into account the similar size of the Tiger to the modern main battle tanks, that back in 1945, these things were absolute monsters. Terrifying. Unbelievable. I never thought a Tiger's engine runs so smoothly. And it actually had almost the same power as the MTU on the Leopard 1!
It's the same engine as was used in the Panther, and the Tiger II.
no it has not near the same power
Tiger
HL230 V12 petrol engine
700hp at 3000rpm...but the engine was operated normaly only with
600hp at 2.500rpm and
1.850Nm at 2.250rpm
torque is btw more impotant in tank engine perfromance
Leo 1
MTU 838 CaM 500 V10 diesel engine
830hp at 2.200rpm
2860Nm at 1.500rpm
The MTU 838 engine has 230hp more at 300less rpm which is 1/3 more... and it has 1010 Nm more at 750rpm lower revs which is way more than a 1/3 more and most important it has the torque at much lower rpm... not talking about the Leo2 engine which has 3 time the torque with 4700Nm ... a Leo2 engine at idle speed has still more power than a Tiger engine reved to the max...
@@nagmashot _ I mentioned specifically the Leopard 1, for obvious reasons. Equally, I did not discuss torque. A torque comparison between gas and Diesel engines is without object. As for the Tiger power, according to my information it was close to 800 HP, which explains my claim.

The other tanks are cool, but I gotta say. Tiger 1 steals the show! Any King Tigers still existing?
There's a King Tiger in this museum and a second was also on loan and display there recently and may still be there. They used the Maybach engine from the museum's one to run this Tiger 1. I'm guessing that one day they'll also run their King Tiger. There's a working King Tiger at a museum in France. A UK collector also has a project to rebuild one in running condition from recovered parts. There is at least one other restoration to running order project and a number of others in museums. Since everybody else is giving an opinion of the Tiger, I might as well contribute:
The Tiger is a good tank with a few caveats.
@@nagmashot Well, when you have to charge so fast because your enemy are running away, these things will happen...
Das Museum habe ich mit meinen Enkeln und unseren englischen Freunden besucht. Hoch interessant, sollte auf jeden Fall sich mal anschaue
Secure White Existence
I agree.

It is unbelievable how exact and sensitive the steering works. Especially in comparison to the Allied constructions.

You can imagine, taking into account the similar size of the Tiger to the modern main battle tanks, that back in 1945, these things were absolute monsters. Terrifying.
