I really don’t like the back spring Phillips, but I can see the value that so many people would find in this mod. Victorinox should definitely do this.
I would rather have a Yeoman or «Compact Explorer». The inline Philips is much better than the T-Philips. Also the mini screwdriver is good to have. The nail file on the hook should be standard. Your argument makes sense though, I have wondered why they dont make an alox rambler. Best explanation would be that noone would buy the alox minichamp, which would be more expensive.
Obviously, we all have preferences. But my point is that a file on the hook, and the combo tool in many of the current designs would trump current models.
I’m a huge fan of the inline Phillips. My Yeoman or Modeler are my favorites (not including my custom). I do wish the file on the hook was just a standard thing. I also kind of wish they’d make something to pair with the inline Phillips that wasn’t a magnifying lens or not good flashlight. Even if it was just a properly sized stump that could accept Victorinox’s own version of that Leatherman 1/4” adapter.
I made similar tool from supertinker and bamtam together 4.5 years ago. super simple to do that because small blades and combo tools are same thickness.
I love my Compacts, just how they are. I use the hook regularly for pulling either on wire or on shoe laces and paracord. (Ive even used it at a ren faire to adjust the tension on a friend's bodice) The corkscrew is good for prying on wet or tight knots, and as a glasses wearer I use the screwdriver daily. On the other hand, the backside phillips can't take a lot of torque, and the tools in the dedicated opener/driver level are better than the combo tool. THAT SAID, I agree, the Compact-EDC would sell and it would cover 90% or so of what most people want and need. In fact, if they brought back the 84mm scissors, a Golfer variant with a philips would sell even better if produced in sufficent quantity. Since I also carry either on my belt or in my bag a Leatherman Rebar, and never make it past the mailbox without it, because I need beefier screwdrivers regularly, mine is an admittedly biased opinion. And to be fair, when you need a corkscrew, there really is no good substitute. But I also think that Vic should do a "custom config" option. If the parts can fit together, any configuration you want. $40US base price for an 84 or 91mm, plus say $10 for every layer after the third, and many parts have an additional fee. Check the box to have the scales NOT attached, $5 premium for plus scales. Extra for Alox. Exta for a 111mm build. It would sell. And make ONE (1) job.
Everything you said, love it.. and Don't get me started about an 84mm..that would be far far far too good. In fact I'm making one using an Antique square philips with a file, so that I can get the same functions as the compact tinker I modded in this video.
This would be the solution to all of our dreams! and i think gears are moving in victorinox to do something like that, they allready opened a customizer for patterns and engraving, i bet their longterm plan is to have people be able to build their own custom VICs
Actually there is a far simpler and far less conspiritorial reason: SCALE OF PRODUCTION Victorinox puts out more knives than almost all other major knife companys COMBINED. according to David C Anderson over at knife center. its the same reason they have not changed their blade steel or harden it different. Its because their size of operation is completely unmatched by everyone else. The cost and logistics of adding a new SKU, even just adding a different tool on this scale is actually the main challange! Trust me, they know all of these ideas, but the cost of re arranging tooling and training people is so much larger than for a Benchmade or a Spyderco who put out miniscule numbers by comparission and are arranged to be much more flexible. Victorinox is listening, and i promise we will see a Victorinox Compact Tinker in the near future! But it simply takes time and significant Public demand!
You're right about scale of production. Presumably due to lack of sales, Victorinox has pulled away over the years from the more compact models (the single blade and combo tool models). That's why I'm not sure we will ever see the compact tinker. The super tinker has "more tools" and due to scale of production they can make it cheaper, and if it's cheaper and looks like it has more tools, it will tend to sell more.
I have an official version of this knife with the rounded knife tip which Victorinox released for the Duke of Edingurgh foundatiin (D of E). At first I thought the knife was useless but I have since come to realize that I rarely pierce or stab with a knife, which in reality is not a good idea with a non locking folder. The rounded safety tip makes spreading food work like a charm and if I need to puncture or pierce something I can use the scissor tip. Great tool for all round edc
Hola ... una vez existió el modelo Salesman... era una tinkee Small con tijeras, pero lamentablemente ya no la fabrican. Ojalá volviera a incluirla en su catálogo, a mí también me gustaría tener ese modelo. Un saludo
The corner of the combo tool is made to be used on Phillips screws. It is not perfect but it works pretty good. I have a three-layer Climber I removed the package hook and awl and I got the Phillips to fit by cutting part of the liner. You also have to cut off the end of the awl to use as a spacer. Very easy mod. You can make a bit adapter to fit a Vic flathead screwdriver or combo tool. You buy a 1/4-inch square drive to a 1/4 hex drive adapter and put a small magnet in the square drive side. Spray the screwdriver or combo tool with Pam cooking spray. Mix up some J-B Weld and fill the square drive side then put the adapter on the Vic screwdriver. Prop the SAK up make sure the adapter is straight and let set up overnight. In the morning you can remove the adapter. You should let the J-B Weld cure three or for days before using.
2 reasons I do not own the compact, corkscrew ,and the " combo " opener, so I bought some plus scales from ebay for my supertinker and never looked back.
A variation on this I would prefer is to replace the hook with the much more useful awl. Then bring back the old school square shank Phillips driver with the nail file on the side. I like the combo tool, but you do give up some strength, especilly when prying, because the combo tool is subsequently thinner then the bottle opener. Instead of the standard opener layer, I'd like to see the can opener replaced with the electricians blade and the small blade replaced with the nail cleaner/file, but it'll never happen. I mean can openers aren't that useful these days. I do agree that vicrorinox and leatherman hold back innovation in order to not undercut themselves and its super frustrating.
Hey, hopefully you'll see this comment, I made a custom SAK myself, so I'm not new to opening a SAK and putting back together (made a Super tinker that I removed the 2 blades and the awl to make it bladeless), but I have one question! Did you have to modify the screwdriver pivot/base shape or hole in any way before squeezing it in and trapping it with the rivet? Thanks!
They did make more variations of compact. There is one with inline Philips and magnifying glass, I wish it was more available. Also 84 mm compact would be nice
I think it would instead add more sales as people like me who cant mod will definitely purchase the updated version. So just phase out the old bottw/can opener layer and update all the line up for more sales.
Parse wrenches in bulk would be fantastic! Have you seen Loki's new project? The cerakoted frames? I'm hoping he might become our replacement for the hole that texastoolcrafters left.

The Pioneers and Farmers are excellent tools. It's a shame but it makes sense what you said about Victorianox competing with itself. Personally I don't like any of the back spine tools - it's just a bad location for something like a screwdriver or awl. Perhaps it's why they've kept the corkscrew - it's the only tool that really works in that position (that and the hook perhaps).
In general, I don't drink wine, besides not all wine have cork plugs, but I prefer knives with cork screws inestedad of fillips drivers. And, yes, you are right about hooks. I would be very nice to have hooks with nail files on all the SAKs
As to this model even for me it's not perfect as I'd find an awl more useful than a multi-purpose hook...why not revert to the old square shank Phillips which had a file on one side? This shows that there are so many different requirements amongst the (probably) tens or even hundreds of millions of vic users that they'd have to come up with thousands of models to satisfy everyone. The difference between the Compact and Super Tinker in terms of thickness is just 2.5mm (one tenth of an inch) so I don't understand the big deal anyway, the difference is barely noticeable, and you get more utility in a Super Tinker, or like I have, the Climber, as the can opener works perfectly well on most Phillips screws. As to Victorinox being seen as slow to innovate, as someone who lived in Germany and Austria for a decade (combined) this is hardly surprising for me, the German speaking Swiss are regarded by those 2 countries as being somewhat traditional, conservative, and slow and methodical, which is saying something. Also perhaps people forget that Victorinox is a family company, the CEO is still an Elsener. In Switzerland Vic employs 1,200 people, only 35% of their turnover is from SAKs, and only 950 employees work in Ibach. From Wiki (German) which is far more detailed and up to date than the English language page: ''Die Jahresproduktion liegt bei rund 26 Millionen Stück, von denen 6 Millionen auf Schweizer Messer, 7 Millionen auf andere Taschenwerkzeuge und 13 Millionen auf Haushalts- und Berufsmesser entfallen. '' Translation: ''Annual production is around 26 million pieces, of which 6 million are SAKs, 7 million are other pocket tools, and 13 million are household and work knives'' (figures from 2019)
Felix has shown me the truth on the corkscrew. It's a bit more useful when using it combination with a victorinox model that has a saw for a pole saw setup, but in general the corkscrew has more "bushcraft" applications than the Philips driver. That being said, a square post for bit driver compatibility is a nice touch. Additionally, I very much prefer the normal bottle opener/flathead driver to the combination tool shown here. Much better is a light duty pry tool. Take the accompanying can opener/Philips driver and convert it to a strap cutter and it has a bit more utility for me.
Hmm - So they won't make a Compact Tinker because it will hurt the Tinket family - So how come they make the Compact at all? As by your logic this must be hurting the Climber family? I am not sure why they don't make one either, but they seem to have somethinmg against the backspring Phillips - Think of all the retired Phillips models - Master Craftsman, Craftsman and several 111mm models
they balanced the demand by increasing the cost of the compact relatively to other 2 layer models, its more than double that of the Tinker, Spartan, etc.
@@maxlvledc Yes - Some of that can be explained by manufacturing and assembly costs. ie Plus scales, also inserting the pin (presumambly this cannot be automated); more manufacturing operations=costs for the hook; a rarer part - ie the Combi tool so smaller production runs (the regular openers are on nearly all SAKs); also the scissors are the most expensive tool to make on a regular SAK. However it still seems somewhat out of whack!
@@maxlvledc Ralph is completely correct, and its the biggest indicator that your reasoning is far more conspiritorial than it needs to be. The production size of victorinox is huge, they are the largest knife manufacturer in the world, they dont need to worry if they undercut their products, they will sell anyway! its the shear cost and complexity a new SKU brings that is what makes Vic innovation so slow.

Totally agree. They put useless features in city tools, and do the same for the forest ones. Not to mention the lack of aluminum scales on their 111 models, and use of thick. slippery plastic.
I don't prefer the combo-tool. I find it kind of annoying as a cap lifter compared with the standard one, depending on the brand of beer and bottle design. The cap lifters on the Spartan, Pioneer, and all the Wenger models work much better.

100% agree, I’m surprised so few people realise their obvious strategy. Victorinox’s whole business model is based on not producing the most useful model, because they know it drives people to buy multiple models. For me the ultimate would be a compact with Philips instead of corkscrew and a saw instead of hook. I would never buy another victorinox then, and they know it.

Can I buy Compact original???
In general, I don't drink wine, besides not all wine have cork plugs, but I prefer knives with cork screws inestedad of fillips drivers. And, yes, you are right about hooks. I would be very nice to have hooks with nail files on all the SAKs
They do make it..... Kinda. There is a Duke of Edinburgh edition, but the blade has a rounded tip.
'' Translation: ''Annual production is around 26 million pieces, of which 6 million are SAKs, 7 million are other pocket tools, and 13 million are household and work knives'' (figures from 2019)
They have 10M corkscrews in inventory, so they have to use them up before they replace them with Phillips.
I agree this is a model I always wanted to see. They could call it the compact s. One I'm just going to have to make. Great video 👍
I would like to make this, where do I start?
It's too complicated to explain in a comment unfortunately
I'd ditch the hook for an awl/reamer. I always end up hurting my fingers with the T Philips. I'd far rather the end Philips.
Doesn't work, different back design, wish it worked
@@maxlvledc Ahhhh I didn't know that. Thanks.
Just an idea... Could the hook be made into an ale if you ground it ?
Hmmm, not sure..
Are you selling this? I'd totally buy it from you! :D
Exactly why I backed GOAT tools.
You and me both!
Same here! Super excited still
I think a the reamer punch in stead of the parcel hook.
It's funny because I've just checked and I've got a Swiss army knife just like this but it's got the Pliers and not the ✂️ 🤔
oh?? must be a rare model.
Sounds like you have a special mechanic aka mechanic jr.
@@maxlvledcit is very rare and very hard to find.
@@Memphisfire40 hey it is indeed an old one it's been in a box for years with other old poickit knifes but i didn't realize it was that rare of a model I've just googled it I've just talking it out to clean it up thanks 😃👍🏻
@@name5949 you’re welcome. 😀
Please make this video showing how to change the corkscrew for phillips step by step. And make a video teaching how to make every compact model, like getting the combo tool of a bantam and changing in some other model decreasing one layer. I really want have a compact with phillips and a compact explorer or yeoman.
I've thought about it, the problem is that everything is difficult when it comes to vic modding
@@maxlvledc 😔
I got to have the saw on my sak or i skip them.
Totally agree. They put useless features in city tools, and do the same for the forest ones. Not to mention the lack of aluminum scales on their 111 models, and use of thick. slippery plastic.
Im interested
I wish they would make a toothpick replacement eyeglass screw driver.
Oooo, good idea
I don't prefer the combo-tool. I find it kind of annoying as a cap lifter compared with the standard one, depending on the brand of beer and bottle design. The cap lifters on the Spartan, Pioneer, and all the Wenger models work much better.
Debería mantener el sacacorchos
Reemplazar el gancho por Philips 0/1
(como la OUTRIDER)
The back spring Phillips is very controversial. I prefer the corkscrew.
Look at the Leatherman P2 and P for the way pricey and no bit kit Addition to it
true thoughts same with the yeoman, traveller etc... sad victorinox isn't that flexible anymore
isnt this the same as DofE?
Not familiar with that one
I want in on the lotto please.
New to the community but I've fallen down the Victorinox rabbit hole.. my whole thing is I HATE standard Victorinoxes so I procure rare, custom and prototype SAK. Currently in my collection is a copper 58mm Spydernox Rambler by SAK 58mm Custom, a 111mm Acid/Stonewash Hunter XS in Black Zirconium scales. 2 24K Gold Plated Spartans. A rambler with scales made entirely of recycled circuit boards. A lot more so to say I'm interested is an understatment😎🙋🏾♂️
Welcome to the club 😊 I dont have any custom SAKs, but in one year Ive bought a Climber, Explorer, Locksmith, Midnite Manager, Cybertool M, Signature, Swisstool and a Swisstool XC + a LM Rebar. A custom Spydernox Yeoman with nail file-hook would be a great next addition

Wow, instead of one crap Phillips you get two!
This is sort of like the mythical Alox Bantam X... should have existed many years ago.

I might make another at some point, not for a little while.

I made one, it's great
I prefer the corkscrew over the phillips
Since we are all wishing,I would love to see them make a "retro line" and go back to using red fibrox scales they are so beautiful ,the red plastic pretty ugly
Bean counters hurting the customer. I’ve heard that one before (cough cough Leatherman).
🤣
@@maxlvledc have you tried slipping a 1/4 drive female by female hex bit socket over regular size Vic scissors like my profile pic? Assuming you were never going to apply nut-busting torque from a pocket knife anyway it works like a charm. The driver I have had a retainer clip so bit stays put. That compact tinker is a beauty tho, Love the content.

Yes yes yes. It's perfect.
Feel the same way!
It was for royalty, Look up the Duke of Edinburgh.
Awesome
I have 4 SAKs. All have phillips.
Corkscrew and nail file are useless in my life.
Why would I want a Philips if I have a flathead? Just saying.
🤨
@@maxlvledc well, think about it, can I use a flathead for Philips screws? Sure, no worries.
What can I substitute a corkscrew with? Absolutely nothing.
When I need the corkscrew I ACTUALLY need it.
@@va941 umm, definitely not true...a flat head will not work on a Philips well, and a non-locking one...much worse. But good news for you, you won't need this mod then.
@@maxlvledc well, it has worked for me every time I have Needed it to work, maybe Youre doing it wrong?
@@va941 . . . If all you have are surface Philips screws...hell a spoon will do ok...but using a flat head at an angle is a great way to jump the screw and damage something you do not want to damaged, right tool for the right job. If that works for you great, but no one who uses tools regularly is going to agree that a flat head works well for a Philips
It would hurt the other lines...by everyone instead buying a proven more expensive seller...which they also sell?
Which they could then put even more effort into making standardized efficient production and get even larger profit margins on than ever? While also getting the positive feedback loop of a large userbase of a single tool which tends to bring on even more users as they follow the bandwagon, as well as more supporting products made by other companies which brings even more publicity and sales?
Remind me never to go into business with you OR the people that inherited victorinox and are coasting off what they got given.
IM INTERESTED!

@@maxlvledc hey sorry please take me off the raffle. I would love to get ahold of this but do not have the extra cash at the moment :(
@@DropStrike np, if I roll it, I'll reroll 😉
I cant hardly stand victorinox. I have dozens of them from the secondhand market and carry a manager on my keychain. Boker and ruike make so much better SAKs with the tech tool lines.
Yea, I was really surprised...except they could have put an inline philips where the "safety" cutter is and wipe the floor with Vic .
Pointless knife imho.
It’s a multitool with a knife. This is a back up knife when you don’t want to ruin your nice knife.
If you want a multitool that looks more like a knife then I recommend skeletool.
