How I made this Bladeless Cybertool M

  • Would this knife pass through airport security? Let me know what you think in the comments. Like I said in the video, it will really come down to the TSA agent who is inspecting you. I've seen TSA take fingernail clippers away from an elderly woman before, so, really nobody can say for sure if it will pass. LOL
    I hope you all enjoyed this build video and please share your thoughts.
    Thank you everybody for a great 2021 and let's have an even better 2022!!!
    You can find more of my work on my website and information on how to order a custom Swiss Army Knife:

    As someone that wanted a bladeless multitool, and ended up with a modded cybertool lite, I will share my own research. To pass TSA guidelines there are four important things to note. First of all, they might try to stick the "No swiss army knife" rule on you, because of the cross Design on the front. However, TSA guidelines clearly state that you CAN have a multitool in your bag, as long as it doesn't have a knife blade. You will probably want to make a sheath for it to rest inside of to be extra compliant. Second is the scissors. TSA states that you are allowed to have scissors if they are less than four (4) inches to the fulcrum. Since this is a small set of scissors, it should be fine regardless of which fulcrum the agent chooses to try to use. The third is the most surprising. The bit driver will fall under the "collapsible tool" rule, and must be less than seven (7) inches long when fully extended and assembled. The bit driver should just barely squeak by this. The last one doesn't apply to your build, but is good to know. According to TAS guidelines, corkscrews are permitted on the plane, as long as they are not attached to a knife blade.
    Hope that is helpful!

      The problem i see is that it looks so cool that the agent might want it for themselves, thus trying to take it from you. I'd love an update once you actually went thru the airport with it

    It is difficult to claim something is TSA compliant…because I’ve had a bladeless leatherman style confiscated on an international flight because of the scissors..and ive flown enough to know that it’s really up to what mood the agent is..They can pretty much say anything is non compliant if they feel it is.

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  2 роки тому +20

      Yeah, that really does make it risky. It'd be so much easier if there was a set rule that tools had to comply to without the judgment of a grumpy TSA agent.

      I’m a flight attendant and have taken a few bladeless tools through since 911, one for over a year of getting spot checked , only to have it removed by a tsa agent that probably wanted it for himself. While in uniform I can’t really argue my point as it gets me in trouble , I just have to roll with it . Multi tools are useful for us as we have stuff in the galleys that need tightening sometimes and all of the hotel windows are often screwed shut, posing an evacuation risk . It really is up to agents at tsa and if they want your stuff. There is no guideline of any sort just a no blade rule. Small scissors are allowed , and then you have the 12 inch knitting needles that are allowed so none of it makes any sense at all. I’m currently carrying a Gerber shard and a cheap set of Amazon mini pliers . I’ve had one shard confiscated, after hanging in there for 6 months .

    holy crap. that's beautiful and it would be a shame if the TSA confiscated it :O
    I had a security agent in Australia confiscate a Leatherman Style PS which was designed from Leatherman to be TSA-friendly. First he pointed at the file and said it had a knife, I told him it was a file and he stared at me with a dull look in his eyes and then just flatly said I couldn't have it.

    I'm a new subscriber. I'm glad I found your channel. I personally wouldn't try to take it on the plane only because if they didn't allow it, they might confiscate it unless you have a way to mail it back home? It may make the first leg, but the return flight may get it captured. I lost a white handled Swiss climber at the airport because I forgot I had it in my backpack. The TSA kept it. I forgot to put it back in the checked bag.

      Hey! Thank you for subscribing! The person I made this knife for said that he plans to fly with it. He's a flight medic and said that he flies often.
      But definitely it is a risk every time. TSA's website gives rules for flying with a multitool, but say that the final decision is up to the TSA agent inspecting you.

    Honestly that looks nice if you have a lot of time, skills, tools and spare parts but i would have probably just snapped or sawed the blades off and called it good if i needed to make anything like that. Both because i don't think I personally could do much better than they do in the factory as far as Victorinox is concerned but also because i don't care enough about the aesthetics as much as the usability in a tool. I still appreciate people like you that do care about stuff like that a great deal and the idea with the g10 is actually pretty interesting. It's a cool material and i see it being used in many interesting places to substitute many materials more and more. Good job

    The final result look amazing and I kow it's quite a nice job. But a bladless swiss knive is like a balless American.

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  2 роки тому

      Thanks! Yeah, it is a shame to make a bladeless "knife". I have a new "TSA safe" project planned for February that is going to have a removable scalpel blade. That way before flying, you could remove and toss the scalpel blade and after arriving just snap on a new scalpel.

  • @bittymongoose
    @bittymongoose 2 роки тому +2

    This thing looks awesome! I am a little confused by the "Bladeless" title though. It still has a scissors and a wire stripping knife. Both of which are blades...

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  2 роки тому +1

      I guess you are right. 🤔 I can see how the scissors could be considered "2 blades". I'm going to be doing another project here soon, it's going to be another "bladeless" mod. 😁

    I usually have my cybertool with me while travelling if I'm checking in luggage. We visited Legoland a few years ago and I wasn't allowed to bring it into the park because...of the screwdriver parts. The blades were not a problem 🙂

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  2 роки тому +2

      What??? Because of the screwdriver? 🤣 That's crazy. They must have thought that you'd take something apart...

    Great work, very informative. I'm starting to realize that choosing an 84mm as my starting project might have been slightly more difficult to start learning on then a 91mm or especially a 93mm as I'm having to make a lot more custom parts but oh well, just means more will be easier later.
    I think Ill have to look into using G10 liners down the road as well. Currently using the aluminum and custom brass liners.
    As far as TSA is concerned; Just say NO. There are way to many factors involved and the worst one is that a human is the judge of what is and isn't allowed. If they are going to make restrictions and have them written down then they should enforce them without so called interpolations based on 1 or 2 peoples beliefs and what kind of day they are having. I would not risk a custom piece on someone else's bad day.

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  2 роки тому +3

      Yeah, the 84mm is rough because it is really limited.
      You are most definitely right about the TSA. It would be a huge risk to try to travel with this tool even if it matches all of TSA's rules.

    It would be tragic if TSA confiscated your beautiful work! I think the leather punch and scissors would be their concern. I took a classic and ground the knife off. (I use the tooth pick and scissors most while traveling.) While going through TSA in China she held it up and showed me the scissors. I told her in Chinese "but there is no knife!" She looked back at the little Classic, nodded, and let me keep it.

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  2 роки тому

      Yes, it would definitely be tragic. I was thinking the scissors would be a problem too. Didn't think about the awl being a problem, but I think you are probably right.

    You would think by now there would a Swiss style knife system out there that you can choose what you want to carry for the day. Make it east to swap out components like a quick connect/ disconnect system maybe? I think they would be very popular with folks.

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  2 роки тому

      That would be a major breakthrough for Victorinox. Having a modular Swiss Army Knife would be very popular for sure.

    Can't get enough of your build videos. This one is by far my favorite as you go into the process in more detail. Have you been able to source the 2.2mm brass rods other than from Europe or via Aliexpress? If not, do you drill out the 2.2mm pin holes (for the corkscrew, etc) to fit 2.5mm pins?

    • @FittoSurvive
      @FittoSurvive  2 роки тому +2

      Hey! Glad to hear that!
      I have not been able to source the 2.2 mm brass rods from anywhere except for China. I have never drilled out the middle tools to 2.5.

      @@FittoSurvive I know, next to impossible.
      A bladeless locking multitool is actually on my list of things to have designed.
      I really only use a few things for contractor work and like I said, carry a dedicated knife. So it's only going to consists of Pliers, scissors, small prybar/file and a multibit screwdriver, and I have a few other idea to incorporate but that's the jist of it.
