Excellent vid on the Compact! I have two (2) of these one in white Plus scales and the other in a titanium Plus with a brass clip. These were purchased from ASZ Knifemaker (Poland). I rotate these with my Fieldmaster, Huntsman, Ranger and Super Tinker. I also rotate between either the Rambler and the Classic SD which is carried in the fifth jeans pocket. Subscribed following a previous video on the Rambler.
Hey Gerry 👊
Cheers, buddy 🍻
I'm glad you enjoyed it & stayed until the end 🫡
I really appreciate you taking the time to add great, valued feedback 💪
I rotate with the same & very similar SAK's 😁
I've been to Poland 🇵🇱 many times and will check this man and his work out - thanks for the 'heads up'.

@@gadgetgus For your information, his name is Anatol Szews, and a great person to work with. I purchased a variety of scales over the last year and he has an Etsy page as well under ASZ Knifemaker. Although I reside in Hawaii (Maui), the shipping is relatively quick and your items are nicely packaged.

Great video as usual man, I like the extra little meta in-video videos 😅 bottle opening and the fire striking one especially shows how easy it is to get a little fire going with it. Nice work and attention to detail, I appreciate that!
Hey buddy 👊
Thanks very much, I really appreciate you saying so & the positive vibes 💪
Very useful feedback that helps me further steer the channel 🚢
Thanks for stopping by,
Atb Gus 👍
I've bought a Compact and a Climber with a brother's birthday coming up and the intention of keeping one myself.
Had a wee fiddle with the Climber and I like the look and grind of the Climber's awl. I'd use that to pilot hole self-tappers, cut belt holes or get stones out the tread of my boots, etc.
So I was leaning towards keeping the Climber but I carry a Leatherman Rebar (with awl, phillips driver, etc) in a Wenger bag that goes almost everywhere with me, almost every day. So I think I'll be keeping the Compact, myself.
That's me giving him the £25 one and keeping the £35 one but I've bought him the Nailclip 580 as well and the little Victorinox key-ring nail clipper, on it's own, for myself (and I'll use the nail file that's on the Compact).
Great review with infectious enthusiasm that's helped me to make an informed choice. Cheers.
Hey buddy 👊🏼
Thanks, I'm glad you found it helpful, and I appreciate you taking the time to get your take on it/ them 🍻

Best 2 layer Victorinox hands down. Great review.

The Compact is going to be my next Victorinox purchase. Between yourself and SlipjointSawyer you’ve convinced me it’s probably one of the best allrounders.
Great review, thanks for sharing buddy 😁
Hey Stu 🍻
😁 That made me smile 😉
Well, I can promise you it's a worthy purchase, as I use it very often, when in the city, town or office.
Glad you enjoyed the video buddy,

I have a Compact. I like carrying it when I go into cities. In and around my town though, I typically carry a Forester M Grip since my town is surrounded by forests and the Forester is a nice compromise in between a Huntsman or Ranger and a Ranger Grip (all of which I do own). It's bigger than the first two, smaller than the latter, is one hand opening and has a good toolset for hiking and trail clearing while also being capable for more domestic tasks.
Hey Peter 👊
Agreed buddy 🍻
I really appreciate you taking the time to add great, valued feedback with useful insight, as it helps the community - top man! 💪
I also have enjoyed the Forrester & Outrider, and now I feel the need to get another one 😁
I dig the Ranger 55 in Walnut, which I ordered & and shall review in due course, with some Bushcraft...

Great video, thx! After I tried the can opener of the kombotool of a Bantam (Fleamarket), I was convinced to buy the Compact. You only need a little more pressure compared to the regular Vic can opener.

Best SAK ever. Well… my favourite anyway… well, one of my favourites… Look I admit it, I have 3 and keep on buying them on impulse especially when they’re on offer. I don’t need anymore, but I just can’t seem to resist. They’ve also been the victims of my modding adventures, resulting in such wonderful abominations as the Compact Tinker (Phillips backtool) and the Compact Cybertool (cyber bit holder in middle layer). Perfect candidate for aftermarket micarta scales - just because it’s special. Awesome❤ wee knife… Great review Gus!

Nice one Gus , a nice little carry. My most used Victorinox , no , knife in general , is the Florist. DO NOT MOCK! I use it countless times a day. It is chisel ground and for pull cuts towards the thumb.......I know , it just works. I am a keen gardener and for side shooting toms , taking cuttings and dead heading it takes some beating. Anyway Gus , look forward to the next one, A T B Tony.🐴🏴
Hey Tony 👊
Thanks, buddy 🍻
I would never knock the, Florist 😁 but seriously, I've used it myself - it's great for the garden, as you know. I also enjoy using the Harvester - Swiss Army 7 for the garden👌
Always appreciate your valid input, my friend,
Atb Gus 👍
No shame in carrying any victorinox knives. They're all great!
I have the Alox single blade, the Huntsman and the Manager.
But the perfect SAK, in my opinion, is the Compact. It's the perfect urban EDC. I like and use the pen like I do all the tools.
Hey Paul 👊
Appreciate you taking the time to add real useful feedback - it really helps 🍻
I may have overdone it, with starting a fire 🔥 near the end, though, but I just wanted to show people how you can 'switch it up'...

Very nice useful knife, I've got a black 1992 timekeeper version too but there is no tweezers in it because the watch sits there.
Hey buddy 👊
It's a classic model ⏱️ for sure 👌
Well, if you ever want to let me review it, that would be great... 😉

Happy Saturday Gus, the 91mm Compact is a frequent EDC carry of mine, I have 5 of them, however I don't like the boring plain red scales & have replaced them with translucent Rubi Red, Sapphire Blue & Emerald Green Plus scales & another Compact I fitted with the blue/black/grey navy camouflage scales, albeit this one has no pen but since I have a pen on my default SilverTech Midnite Manager key ring SAK I am covered. My 5th Compact I do not carry as it is a collectable, it is the VSAKCS 2022 Halloween Compact with decorative scales that cost me $54.99 ( I also bought the Halloween Spartan at $29.99). The Compact is definitely one of the three medium size SAK's that I would carry for Urban EDC if I lived in the UK simply because it is slim, versatile & non-threatening, the other 2 being the 85mm non-locking Evo-Grip 14 and the 93mm Pioneer X . ATB Steve in Tel Aviv.
Shalom SAKMeister Steve 🙌
Clearly, you have a well established collection, buddy 😉
I'd like the Halloween 🎃 models and would like to get one, for sure.
I would also enjoy the Evo-Grip 18, but I know with our UK Laws, it will probably be the EG14 instead...
Always with the positive waves 😁
Be well my friend,
God bless 🙏
Gus
The Compact is my fav of the smaller SAKs. If I didn’t need all the other tools, the Compact would be my EDC.
Hey buddy 👊
I hear you and totally get that 💪
Appreciate you taking the time to add your take on it 👌
Thanks for watching,
Atb Gus 👍
Brilliant SAK. Prefer the Climber, though. But then I miss the nail file in the back of the beloved hook. The combination tool is OK. Converted so many desk lamps from old to new electric plug using the combination tool, in a Bantam or in a Waiter, so it works. But the good ole Spartan knocks on the door asking where the hell have you been, man? ;)
Hey Tom 👊
Thanks for the great, insightful feedback, buddy - it really helps 💪
You made me chuckle with the Spartan, so I may get that out today 😁
Thanks for watching,
Atb Gus 👍
The Spartan is a great classic!
I’ve just pulled the trigger on one of these. I initially got a Waiter due to the price. I saw the Compact for £35 and had to pull the trigger!
Hey buddy 👊
I like the Waiter, a great value SAK, basically a Bantam with the Corkscrew! 😉
I know you will enjoy the Compact, a great urban carry, form & function that is definitely worth the investment 👌
You will find the scissors ✂️ and even the pen particularly useful, on occasion 💪
Thanks for your feedback, my friend - enjoy,
Atb Gus 👍
Gus I love my sak it's got 2 layers exellent saw scales are black walnut can't fault a sak hell no way mine is scaple sharp for carving and repairing crap I even skinned wild boar with mine edge is scary how sharp I get mine wild boar has ridiculous tough skin ask any taxidermy guys greetings from essex 👍🦊🐾🇮🇹
Hey John 👊
Appreciate you taking the time to add your unique style of feedback 😁
I'm rather partial to wild boar 🐗 paté... 😋
However, as their skin is tough, I personally wouldn't use a 91mm SAK on one - only in case of an emergency.
Perhaps you can show us how, with that special technique you employ, someday soon 😉
Thanks for watching,
Atb Gus 👍
@@gadgetgus gus it's not size of tool but how you use it im used to using my legal carry blades for everything
My everyday carry SAK is the Rambler
The Rambler is my fav 58mm, after the Manager, that they discontinued last year, unfortunately.
I often use it as a companion with my Climber, Compact, etc...
Thanks for watching 👍
Great SAK option. As you know, I am a fan of the Super Tinker, but this is still a really good SAK. I like the addition of the file on top of the hook, nice touch.
Have you tried changing the scales out on a SAK? I'm tempted to give it a try.
Hey Sussex 💪
I also enjoy the Super Tinker, which I'm reviewing very soon...
Depending on what I'm going to be doing & where I am, I will always opt for a dual layer SAK, when possible, as for me, that's the optimal EDC requirement - great for the city, as is the Sportsman, Cadet or Bantam.
However, I often rotate the Climber, Pioneer X, Super Tinker, or Explorer when out the city, but in an urban environment.
I also have two options in the car 🚗 - Leatherman Bond & Huntsman.
Since I live in the home counties, I often go for a walk, planned or otherwise, so then I carry the Walker, Hiker or Camper...
I'm also reviewing the Fieldmaster very soon, and I have a feeling you may enjoy that model 😉
Atb Gus 👍
I have years ago, but you have given me an idea.
I shall upload a 'demo' video in a couple weeks, if you like...
What did you think of the 'Firestriking' 🔥 demo near the end of the Compact video - was it a bit much?

I fell for the hype that surrounds the Compact and bought it a year ago. It's trying to pack as many functions as possible in 2 layers but that comes with certain downsides (only one blade for cutting everything - food, glued packaging etc. -, very small nailfile, controversial combotool) and you'll need a 58 mm keychain SAK as well to solve most of these issues. Some of these 58 mm models (the MiniChamp or the discontinued Manager) can even replace the Compact entirely in most urban settings (or if you're willing to choose between the pen and the toothpick+tweezers duo get a Rambler or a Midnite Manager).
In spite of these things I'd love to see a new line of SAKs (next to the Spartan line and the Tinker line) and the Compact seems the right starting point for that. Imagine all the SAKs being sold today but each one being one layer thinner than now, for those who don't mind the aforementioned compromises (or carry a keychain SAK to complement the shortcomings of their 91 mm one). Size is certainly an issue nowadays in my opinion, 4 layers is the thickest I'm personally willing to go when choosing a SAK. A bit offtopic but this is why I would also consider starting a bladeless line (for those flying and for those who already EDC their favourite blades). I HOPE someone in Ibach Switzerland actually reads this, haha.
Hey buddy 👊
Thanks for all your valued insight and feedback - appreciate you taking the time to comment.
They may do a non-knife model, as do Leatherman, in the future.
I'm reviewing the Tinker this week, funny enough, so you may like that one, instead...
All the best,
Gus
That's why I opted for the Climber...well okay I bought it a couple of years back as it was on sale, and for about a year didn't carry it much but now I carry it most days, together with a Knipex Cobra XS. The secondary blade gets more use than the large blade. I'm not a fan of the combotool either, as far as I know it's pretty thin so you have to be careful using it for prying, plus I think it's very awkward to use on Phillips screws, unlike the end of the can opener on my climber. Plus it has the 2 backtools I least use on my Climber (corkscrew and hook) and lacks the one I do use occasionally, the reamer/awl. I put Plus scales with a pocketclip on mine so I've got the pen too. Overally well worth the slight extra thickness.
@@simonh6371 "it's very awkward to use it on Phillips screws"
That's precisely what gave me the final push to buy the Climber too and it's the main weakness of the Compact: the Phillips head capability. We can say the corner of the combotool is a 2D Phillips screwdriver but then every flat and thin object with a ~90° corner can be called a 2D Phillips. Victorinox should either 1. reengineer the combotool to have the 2D Phillips at the right angle, 2. start making the Yeoman again (which added an inline Phillips to the Compact), 3. or swap the corkscrew for a T-handle Phillips (not optimal but better than what it's got as of now) and start making the tiny eyeglass screwdriver as a scaletool.
@@manwiththeredface7821 I don't actually have experience with that combotool, rather the one on the old GAK, which is on the end of the saw. It's a bit differently shaped but also bloody awkward to use as a Phillips driver. I'd forgotten about the Yeoman, another discontinued model which many wish they'd start making again. As it is we're a bit limited on options with the inline Phillips, just the Explorer and Champ, plus the Spartan and Huntsman Lite models - there was a Climber Lite limited edition released in 2021 but I can't find any on sale now and anyway they were pretty pricey. Even the Spartan Lite costs just £2 less than what I paid for my Swisschamp! Plus I like to clean my knives in water with washing up liquid so I don't think the Lite models are really an option for me.
@@simonh6371
Hey Simon 👊
That's a good enough reason, as any...
Great insightful, feedback 💪
Thanks for stopping by,
Atb Gus 👍
The compact is a good un for sure! But im always bewildered by the extortionate price of it for a two layer Victorinox? At this time of writing it is £35 on Amazon! This is on offer? Whereas the super tinker is on offer at £22 ! The later is a three layer knife!
There is also the mountaineer at the same price as the compact and thats four layers !
I usually edc a pioneer and have for four decades, i always have a Swisschamp in my work bag too!
Hey Mike 👊
I think £28-£30, would be fair 👌
I always enjoy the ST, and it's been on special for approx. 6 months now, to help the excess stock.
The Mountaineer is also a useful 4 layer overall, especially with the file, for urban carry.
I would also consider the Fieldmaster or Explorer, as great 4 layer alternatives.
The love the Alox Pioneer and I had a Handyman in my van for years and now car 🚗 a great back-up tool 🧰
I appreciate you taking the time to comment & add value 💪

It's now £50.99 on Amazon, sold by Amazon, which I refuse to pay.
@steverix8181
Yes, that's just ridiculous for the compact!
Much prefer the Climber as a tool to attach to a keying. A little bit more weight (not much) and has the full opener layer which includes the small flat screwdriver/phillps. And has the awl which works well as a makeshift drill.
If only Victorinox would offer it with the hook that has the file on the edge. But that applies to all models., except the Compact for some reason.
Hey buddy 👊
Clearly, the Climber is better value for money, overall 👌
That's why I only purchased the Compact when it was on sale.
I enjoy two blades on my SAK's, generally speaking.
However, I would prefer the nailfile instead of a second blade on the Climber, as I carry a back-up one anyway.
I believe the new Companion is a great compromise between the Climber, Compact, etc...
Especially when it comes available with standard or plus ➕️ SAK scales 😉
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment 🍻
ATB Gus 👍
Hello, thanks for the review. The Companion does look like the perfect knife for me. It's just a shame that Victorinox only offer it as a "special" model. And therefore comes with a price that's too high for what it is. @@gadgetgus
Got mine for 18 pounds on amazon last year at Christmas might get black scales on it 😁

@@gadgetgus Yeah the toothpick never gets used on my teeth 😆
I prefer the tinker since I feel that a corkscrew is useless these days. Along with a can opener. At some point, the company needs to catch up with the times and start looking at replacing some of these outdated tools.
Hey Paul 👊
I hear that, buddy 😉
They may be starting too, by the looks of it...
I reviewed the Victorinox Companion a few months ago, with a '1st Edition' tool - the box/package opener...
Now, when they bring that out in standard SAK models, it will be a bestseller, for sure ✅️
Thanks for watching, and I appreciate your valued input,
Atb Gus 👍
I love the Compact but a few critiques that bug me: 1. The can opener tip does not work well for a Phillip's screwdriver. It works in a pinch but is not great. 2. The can opener is thinner than the classic bottle opener and is not as good for prying. 3. The reamer comes in handy and we don't have one with this.
I do love the scissors and blade, and the overall compactness though. It's a tough choice to carry this or the Spartan. If I'm wearing jeans and not khakis or shorts, I'll usually just carry the Climber and get it all.
Hey buddy 👊
Very well said, I enjoyed your take on it, and you make some valid comparison points 👌
Perhaps you need to start doing reviews, my friend 😉
Thanks for watching,
Atb Gus 👍
Yeah I'm looking at getting a swiss army for a edc but they makes it hard to decide what swiss army to get when you have to sacrifice a tool you want or a few. The compact has all tools I like except a awl and saw. I been recommended the climber and huntsman but the compact and climber is lighter then the huntsman. But the climber is missing a saw.The struggle is real lol
@@MoonChild0678 You could always get a Camper and carry a little SD for the scissors. 🤷🏼♂️
