Norm Marquis increasing speed/explosive power is different for each person. You could train ure shoulders buy throwing dumbells like boxing or training ur speed on a heavy/speed bag. Every person need something else especially by fight/boxing Sports.
Hi Mike, thanks a lot for all these awesome videos, the best of UA-cam. Teaching beginners is the most challenging, and we really appreciate some people dedicate time and energy for that. So much to learn. One question : you mention that a big part of the hips rotation is initiated from the rear leg for the jab, partially because the heel is up. But I thought in boxing that the speed and strength always come from the leg on the side of the throwing punch, and while punching the weight goes on the other side leg. Isn’t it the left leg that does the work in the jab to push the hips ? I am confused here, I don’t get how to use both of my legs to push the hips…there is something I didn’t catch.
thank you for watching...and you're right that the power for a punch usually comes from the same side that is throwing it. Yet the jab is not really a power punch... You will want to keep that rear heel up because it will greatly improve your mobility. The power and range for your jab can also be improved by using that rear foot to propel yourself forward and step as you jab. Thanks again for taking the time to comment 😎😎😎

Really good detailed breakdown, but your lead hand drops right before you throw the jab. If you do this in sparring or a match, it's a very clear telegraph and your opponent will catch on very quickly.
You have a great eye and you’re absolutely right. There is another video on this channel called “jab specialist” where I explain that I developed that bad habit after tearing my shoulder. In that video a go see a pro training to help fix the problem. I thank you for watching 😎😎
Great suggestion, we already have a couple of videos on boxing footwork, angles, and shadow boxing if you look in the boxing playlist on this channel but I think making something that is even easier on the knees is a good idea :)
Thank you for taking the time to watch. I find it becomes a little too difficult to really rotate your hips when throwing a job to the body. It’s usually used as a way to distract your opponent or to set up other punches… or to stop him from advancing. I just throw it straight out without the rotation. 😎😎
Yes. Your rear hand is your power hand. The lead hand may not be as powerful yet it closer and thus a quicker punch. Lead punches such as jabs are often used to set up your more powerful shoes. Thanks for watching 😎😎🙂🙂
@Fight your way Fit PLEASE HELP! Thought my jab was pretty good, but i’ve been trying to perfect the details. Problem: First, I was told to torque my hip forward with for my jab using my front foot. Couldn’t figure out how to do this. Your video says to torque your hip into the jab using the back foot. Not sure I can figure this out either. Please explain. Of course, I push my rear hip forward using my back foot for my cross, but the jab too?
Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. The jab is not a power punch… but if thrown in place then you want a slight internal rotation of your lead hip. The back foot doesn’t really move but stays in place and maintains your balance . To throw a jab while stepping forward you will want to have your rear heel up and push off of the floor to propel yourself forward as you jab. 😎😎😎

Mike, do you think that the rotation of the arm is adding power or we rotate our arms when throwing punches just to connect in that 45 (or even larger) degree angle, which is most stable according to you?
Thanks for watching. I really don’t believe that the rotation adds any extra power. Yet it does seem to make it more comfortable to keep your shoulder up against your chin. 😎😎 at the end of the day, whatever feels most comfortable for you will always be the best way to go.

@@fightyourwayfit , and just to ask another question while we are on the topic- do you believe in the different level of wrist stability according to the rotation of the arm?
I've added your heavy bag workouts to my gym routine but have a problem. My left runs out of gas about halfway through rounds where the jab is the primary punch. Can you recommend any exercises (resistance or otherwise) that will strengthen my left? I'm paying close attention to my form, but that's not helping with the arm fatigue. I really like your videos. I don't have any illusions that I'll ever step into the ring (I'm 62), but the heavy bag gets my heart going and the sweat pumping better than any aerobic exercise I've ever tried. Thanks!
Most people that train for boxing never step into the ring but rather do it because it is such an amazing workout., that is fun, effective and it's easier on certain joints like the knees for example. Don't worry because you are not alone in this, many people have the exact same problem with the lead arm becoming fatigued. The reason for that is because we usually use that lead arm at a 2 or 3 to 1 ration vs the rear arm. Your body will definitely adapt to the training over time but if you are looking for some additional exercises to do, then there is a little shoulder routine that I like at the end of the video in the link below. Thank you for commenting and for trying out the routines :) ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=W2AYGsbkK-w
Total beginner question: I am 4ft 11inches at 98 lbs and my shoulders just don't reach as high as yours can to protect my jaw. Will it suffice if instead, I just accordion my neck in? Like a turtle? 😅
I just started a few weeks ago and my coach keeps telling me that I should rotate my left foot while throwing the jab (as I would when throwing a cross). However I have watched many tutorials on youtube and in NONE of them do people rotate their left foot. Also I personally find it uncomfortable as I'm losing balance if I do so. Is this a matter of personal preference or is my coach completely wrong?
great question, There are always different styles i guess but you won't find too many people that rotate the front foot when throwing a jab. you could rotate your hip slightly to add a little more power but not the foot as that may limit your mobility to pounce forward as you jab or double jab. At the end of the day, the most important rule is that you feel comfortable and stay on balance : )
u need to rotate a foot (not as much as a cross) to get the best hip rotation to get a smooth extension. also will be used on the way back to stance. i feel either foot can be rotated whtever is most comf.
thanks for commenting, That will always depend on the type of boxing style that you use. For example, Mike Tyson would, like you said, keep his hands up and in close to his chin as he came forward where other fighters like Ali or Mayweather keep their lead hand low. As long as your shoulders stay high to protect your chin you should be fine :)
You should not feel any too much of a strain in your shoulder. It could be that you are simply not used to using those particular muscles and it may go away in time. Thank you for taking the time to watch.
That will always depend on which style of jab you throw and how hard you wish to throw it. You may be able to generate more power by really using your legs to rotate your hips and core. Yet it is not absolutely necessary to move your ankle.
I know this isn't the feedback you're looking for (great video and whatnot), but the soundtrack reminds me of a Trailer Park Boys episode when they filmed a porn video. Anyways, my jab came a long way because of this video. I've only fought people when they thought I wasn't giving them enough weed for their dime, but that whole experience has made me interested in actual boxing as a hobby. It is kind of like chess!
Lol…. Boxing can be very much like chess. Great boxers think many moves ahead. Is often been said that boxing is not a tough man sport but I thinking man sport. Lol… you got to love trailer Park boys Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and for taking the time to watch😎😎😎😎😎😎
i was hitting the heavy bag at the gym and a guy kept criticizing my jab saying my thumb had to be pointed to the ground when throwing the jab. it didn't feel comfortable to me so i stopped. he told me find another hobby. is the thumb pointed to the ground important?
You will find that everyone seems to have an opinion on how you should box, yet they probably have never really fought before. At the end of the day, you need to feel comfortable with what you are doing. I don't have my thumb pointing towards the floor..oh and Tyson, Klitschko, Mayweather, Delahoya and Ali don't either: )
Your foot absolutely will take a step if you are further away from the target. There is another video on this channel all about footwork that will explain this more clearly. I think you again for watching😎

That will always depend on which style of jab you throw and how hard you wish to throw it. You may be able to generate more power by really using your legs to rotate your hips and core. Yet it is not absolutely necessary to move your ankle.
Is this also applicable to palm strike? and also the hook.
Thanks for commenting, the technique for a palm strike would be similar and there is a link below in the description on how to throw a hook : )
aim for the nose.
You’re absolutely right. Thank you for taking the time to watch😎😎😎😎

hello i have no kit for punching can i do punching practic on wall
Not unless you have some very good padding on the wall. You don't want to risk injuring your hands : )
Everlast Nutrition lol thanks a lot. I appreciate the response now I can train with confidence and tell dude to kick rocks
does your feet step or not
Your foot absolutely will take a step if you are further away from the target. There is another video on this channel all about footwork that will explain this more clearly. I think you again for watching😎

Thank you for commenting;
Your'e absolutely right, the majority of the time you will step while throwing your jab. This video is simply to have beginners get the proper biomechanics down. We have foot work and shadow boxing videos on this channel that explain the jab step in further detail.
Yeah i too was wondering about that thinking why he hasn't mentioned about it...

They do hit the wall, but you will be throwing many more punches in boxing than they throw...and over time it will damage your hands.
