      Scotty Kilmer wondering if you could answer a question about the similar situation bt with a 99 crv. Things drove fine all morning. Than in the evening fired up fine iddled and than died after i shifted into drive. Swapped a new distributer on with wires and plugs. But nadda fuel is getting there and the starters still working. But it seems like it not getting spark but that dizi worked fine when used on another b20 motor.

    This is exactly what happened to my 1996 Honda civic Lx. I was at a stop light, it turned green, I started to take off, then my car died. I have no spark, so my mechanic friends say its the distributor....I guess I will be doing the exact same thing in this video, this weekend. Thanks for the great video...

      I’d pull the spark plugs, and the wires. Check the plugs see if they are black/burned/browning on the top etc. Check the plugs for oil etc, and Hondas are notorious for leaking distributor. The rotor and cap could be bad as well, check rotor for burning on edge and cap for worn out contact points. 97 accord with almost 200k and my distributor is still running strong. But if it is your distributor I’d check rockauto.

    Because I'm a professional mechanic, when I fix em, I want em to stayed fixed. I used to change igniters, then often in a few months they'd be back broken again. On an older car, best to not use pieces of electrical parts for fixes. I know, been doing it 44 years. I do what's most logical for a long term fix.

    Hey scotty, my wifes car is a 1997 nissan altima, we think the distributor is going bad, itll run good driving it most of the time but randomly, especially stopping at stop signs/lights, etc. Itll act like it wants to shutoff and (sometimes it does stall, revving it stops it from stalling usually) and when she accelerates from a stop itll jerk and sputter and hesitate for a few seconds and then afterwards is ok, it happens under any driving condition, hot or cold, engine warm or cold.
    Put in new spark plugs, wires are ok, new fuel filter, cleaned throttle body, replaced a broken vacuum hose, cleaned MAF sensor, trans fluid is clean and shifts great, fresh oil/filter change, battery is new, terminals are clean.
    All my research into these issues seems to be pointing to distributor.
    Thank you so much Scotty, love your videos, I learned a lot from you!

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому +2

    @longwang3o3 if it just clicks, replace the starter itself or the battery. Try jump starting it, and if that works, replace the battery, if it still clicks, change the starter.

    @sherrytucker if it has power to the dist, but no spark coming out in a Honda, that means the inside of the dist is shot. If you don't mark em, now buy a manual that shows how to set up TDC on your engine and how to put the dist back in at top dead center. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому +2

    depends on how you use the leads, you can use em to ground the plugs

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +1

    @Bushougoma Yes, cause many things can break inside the dist, that's why I use brand new units, not rebuilts. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  10 років тому +3

    bad ignition control modules often do that, as to bad fuel pumps. Have both tested.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +3

    @happy543210 Yes, you can do that also. but if the timing belt was broken the engine would have sounded much different when cranking, it would have cranked MUCH faster than normal. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому

    @lajlijthoj if the dist has power going into it when you turn the key on, but no spark comes out to the spark plugs, the dist is bad.

    hi, thanks for the video - I have ordered a new distributor and this is very helpful.
    One question though - not too sure how you are using the white paint - I find that bit rather confusing because you paint the new distributor after you position it (and then the paint disappears anyway). On the video it looks as if the distributor can only be fixed in one position anyway - can it be adjusted?
    Also how do you make sure that the rotor faces the right way? Can it be rotated easily?
    Many thanks!

    @lajlijthoj on those camrys,generally only either the distributor goes bad or the fuel pump. if you now have fuel I would question the distributor. But of course, check to make sure the timing belt hasn't broken or jumped timing, cause that will kill it too.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +2

    many things can go wrong on a timing belt change, but number one is damaging sensors, like crank sensors, check that first. And also recheck timing marks on cams and crank to see if belt has slippped

  • @scottykilmer

      @EddyTee99 8 років тому +6

      +Ryan Bissell (Ryan V. Bissell) Haha it kind of is, at least on my Honda Accord, you don't have to move the dizzy around to adjust the timing, the ecu automatically adjusts the timing and idle on its own after I drove around for a while

    • @CrazyforCruiser
      @CrazyforCruiser 8 років тому +40

      +Ryan Bissell (Ryan V. Bissell) Those lines would have helped but if he was going to use the old distributor back after removing it. But since he installed a new distributor, yes that was a joke.

    • @brutalweazl
      @brutalweazl 4 роки тому +5

      Lmfao it was. Notice the white line on the new one mysteriously vanished right after he marked it

    • @RyanBissell
      @RyanBissell 4 роки тому +3

      @Mr. Untouchable what you say might have made sense if he put the old one back on, or showed that he spent time clocking the new one. He did neither. All he did here was draw a line on the new one to match the line on the mount. (And then his mark mysteriously disappeared by the time he showed the engine running, at the end.)

    • @RyanBissell
      @RyanBissell 4 роки тому

      @Mr. Untouchable I don't doubt you in the slightest. Makes good sense. But 'whether he was joking or not' *is* relevant, because that's what my comment was about. Based only on what Scotty showed us, in this video it seems his mark did him no good. ...Maybe it's good standard practice for many models, so he demonstrated it, despite not actually needing it on this one?
      I do see the adjustment slots, that's why I mentioned clocking. If he cared about that, you'd have seen him painting the new distributor by referencing the old one, rather than adding a mark to match the engine's mark after the job's already done.
      If you still think I'm missing something here, feel free to speak up again.

    What was your reason for changing the entire distributor ?

    • @LeadFarmer813
      @LeadFarmer813 9 років тому +2

      bush master the reason for bad distrib is the pickup coils aka trigger coils (cheap or old) insulation inside breaks and shorts out not sending high enough trigger signal to turn on spark each time it turns the spikes pass the sensor inducing a spark... or bad ignition Coil thats also inside there.

    • @bushmaster2936
      @bushmaster2936 9 років тому +1

      Arnold G You still didn't answer why the original poster changed the entire distributor. My personal experience with three different Hondas was all the same item.....the ignition coil. No need to change the entire distributor in any of the three cars.

    • @LemonMan_Man
      @LemonMan_Man 9 років тому +1

      bush master If your going to do the work to change plug and coil, do it to all of the plugs and the distributor. The plugs normally all die around the same time, its basically like buying new tires, you wouldn't buy just 1 new one if it pop and the other 3 are bold, you would replace the other 3 early.

    • @bushmaster2936
      @bushmaster2936 9 років тому +1

      Mr. Jumps WTF are you talking about ? The question still remains to the original poster. WHY did he change the entire distributor ? Obviously he has no clue or he would have responded by now !

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  9 років тому +13

      +bush master you change the entire dist because on old cars with dists it's best to use a brand new dist (I use chinese made ones that cost less but work fine) than attempt to fix a broken part like a module in them . If you patch up an old dist, odds are soon another old part inside will break, then strand you

    Scotty, I'm thinking about picking up this Honda for $1000 as a commuter car since I drive a v8. What do you think could be wrong with it? The car has beautiful paint & is in really nice shape. Here's what the add says "1999 Honda Civic Hx. 5speed manual. Clean title. 166k miles. Runs and drives but needs work. Sometimes dies at stops. I don't have time to fix. Come drive it away."

    • @scottykilmer

      they can last a long time, especially the standard tranny ones like that. Worth a gamble

    • @lycanchimera
      @lycanchimera 7 років тому +6

      I agree with Scotty, worth the gamble.
      First is to check vacuum hoses are in-place and are placed in the right places. Also check for vacuum leaks or just replace them all, by purchasing those new and nice looking silicone vacuum hoses. Lot's of videos to look at too.
      Have the engine tuned. And have the intake manifold, throttle body and IACV cleaned.
      Replace with standard sparkplugs like Denso(K16PR-U11) or NGK BKR6E11(G-Power or V-Power).
      From research and experience standard ones are better because they are copper compared to those iridium and platinum. They are more expensive not for their conductivity but their durability. The iridium and platinum are less conductors than the standard ones. You don't need durable plugs for standard to even high rev driving because time will come that you have to replace them.
      Replace these with new stuff:
      1. Spark Plugs
      2. SparkPllug Cables/Tension Wires (Denso/NGK/MSD or Splitfire)
      3. Do an Oil Change (Pennzoil, Valvoline, Mobil1, Castrol Edge, fully synthetic)
      4. Drain and Replenish with fresh Brake Fluid including for the clutch right beside the brake reservoir. (amber color if fresh)
      5. New Drop-In air filter

      @Concorde1775 9 років тому +24

      Based off your comment, I can tell you have zero knowledge on vehicle repairs, And I assume you are making a really bad attempt at trolling. When your engine dies this is simply a possible cause for it dying. So, No. You do not need to buy a distributor each and every time your car stops.

    • @Cash4Fruit
      @Cash4Fruit 9 років тому +2

      Concorde1775 Obviously it's not always going to be the distributor, but this video didn't show what else it could be.. In my case the mechanic confirmed the problem was the distributor, I am hoping that is the ONLY problem and if I replace it, it will be fixed... I am going to do it myself... because the mechanic wanted to charge $1400! I think he mentioned it needed "new hoses" too... ?

  • @scottykilmer

    @moofushu Yes, it can, but not in this case. This Honda died while driving 50 mph , and the relay will only keep it from being started, once it's started it can't kill a Honda. PLUS, you would lose both spark and fuel injection pulse. so check both of those IF you suspect a Honda that won't start. Scotty

    Great vid Scotty! For everyone else, take a look at the cap and rotor too. The Honda I fixed had corroded contacts on the cap and rotor causing hard starts. Cheap parts to replace. I was surprised to find points on a '99 but I guess they only need service every 130k.

    @mi16t AH, read some of my other advice, only Certain chinese parts. I've had great luck with chinese brand new japanese car distributors. But as for stuff like MAF sensors for German cars, they work like crap on those. Nothing is as simple as you might think. Most American cars come with lots of chinese made parts on them from the factory if you check closely these days.

  • @scottykilmer

    @popeye4213 that's a fuel related problem, either a crappy pump OR it was put in wrong and the feed lines are loose or have fallen off. It sucks fuel from the bottom of the tank when the lines are on right, but when the lines are loose or off, it only works right when a lot of gas is in the tank. See that a lot in botched jobs.
