Cody My sons 1999 civic had the very same oil leak as your video showed. I replaced the vtec solenoid gasket first and that did not fix the leak. I then found your video and replaced the distributor cap o ring and I still had oil! So I replaced the o ring again (parts from dealership). Same thing, ugh. Could these guys be giving me the wrong o ring? BTW, the manifold gasket is fine. Where else could this damn oil be coming from?
hey man just changed my oring thanks for the help your video helped me a lot. quick , straight to point. very helpful. rating 10/10. all videos should b like this one.
just trying to confuse you and charge you more. DIY when possible is the way or understanding what is being said when they are saying it. I know people who don't know anything but putting gas in the tank. They're taken every time. Even me with my first car a long time ago.
I just bought a 2000 Civic Hatchback and saw that there was an oil leak in that area where the distributor would be leaking oil. I was able to bring down the price from $2700 to $2000 because of it. I'm gonna fix it this weekend.
Hey you're awesome thanks for this I think I'll try to do this myself instead of having shops rip me off. I do work on my own cars but I don't usually mess with timing stuff. Thank u
I saw a video where the mechanic recommends replacing the distributor if oil got into it ? Does your distributor give you any issue (Example: sputter, misfiring and stalling) or just oil leak? thanks
My distributor is leaking so i will be changing the o ring, just wondering as i am not to knowledgeable with cars etc i was driving home from work today and as I accelerate my car would go say about 50kmh and then it will struggle a bit and even when i step on the pedal it will not move any faster for a few seconds. It’s like delayed. What could be the cause of it? Could it be something to do with the distributor?
So long as you haven't damaged it and its the correct one it should not still be leaking unless your engine is high mileage or PCV breather or ventilation valve needs replacing causing crankcase pressure?
I know this is old but for anyone else reading this today, there are actually 2 more seals for the shaft which also leak. I've seen many videos of these guys just changing the main one but that's completely half ass. If you're taking it off then just replace them all.
I want to do this but dont want to f up timing I see a lot of people comment about the timing...any suggestions so I wont f this up looks simple but just want to make sure I do it right
Like he said in the first minute, mark your distributor with a sharpie and mark the piece that connects with it in the cylinder head. So there should be a line showing you where you weree
That seems to be the one that none of these guys ever change. I got a complete seal replacement kit for mine. 3 pieces including the standard O ring...
Hi i have a 98 honda civic lxi d16y4 engine 5speed it has since developed a rattle at 4tho rpm an since over a week the tick/rattle has gotten down to 2tho rpm was still driving normal an throttle response did not change til last night now is stalling itself an after i shut down engine wint start again unless jump started or crash started any help in solving this problem would be much appreciated...im thinking distributor maybe???
I have a 1997 Honda Odyssey. Car won’t start. 3 plugs don’t have a spark but one does. I checked the distributor cap and it had a little bit of oil. Have any ideas of what test I can do? Does it sound like it could be a bad distributor or just maybe spark plug wires?
So, I have a question: how does marking where the distributor housing sit in relation to the block affect the timing? Doesn't the inside of the distributor rotate? So, wouldn't it have to be the INSIDE of the distributor that stays unmoved, so as not to affect the timing? I may be wrong, but I wanted to ask.
The inside is set correctly because it has a slot on the cam it can only go in one way. But if you move the outer housing it will change your timing. That's why you don't have to worry about the inside marking. Now chevy and Ford is different they have gears and it can change but Honda does not use the same method to drive the rotor.
Well i ran in to an issue ive never seen before. Ordered the correct felpro oring but its too small. I believe the civic must have annaftermarket distributor and its oring is alot larger than the factory o-ring
when you are talking about the O ring that could go bad at :24, which part is that because that is where my oil leak is coming from and I don't know what the part is?
The part confusing me is people mentioning timing. Is the only thing that could fuck up timing if you rotate the distributor the wrong way putting it back on? Half the videos mention checking timing and the other half dont
No not unless the inside seal is pouring oil inside the distributor cap. I would check for spark those coils can get hot and go bad also a bad main relay will keep it from starting. Without knowing the year and engine and what its doing its hard to diagnose. But always remember 3 main things Spark, Fuel, and Compression or in a Honda Timing
I just did this and my car will not start it just goes kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kkkkkkkkkk that is the sound..i just replaced the dam oring slipped it back my distributor has 2 bolts so there is no need for me to aligned
Cody how long does it take you to get 89,000 subscribers? I just started my channel and I will be uploading daily. I know I can entertain this car community. Just wondering how long it will take till I have a big fan base if I do as good as you did.

is it gonna work on 5gen prelude 1998
distributor is pretty much the same ?
as i got the same problem
Yes they all have a oring in there that after time will start to leak.
Cody

I had one civic that was leaking from the valve cover gasket on the D16 and it looked like it was coming from the distributor.
What's the part number?
hey man just changed my oring thanks for the help your video helped me a lot. quick , straight to point. very helpful. rating 10/10. all videos should b like this one.
The simple things to fix, the mechanic made it a big deal. Thanks Cody

Thanks for the video. Everything was understandable and to the tee. Just replaced my o ring today. So far its a success 👍
thank you just saved myself about 500 bucks for something so simple
Great video that's the exact problem my car has I'll do this and it'll be peak proof
I was wondering where my leak was coming from and was running down through the front. I’ll try this and hope it fixes the leak
thanks, not Eric the car guy
Thank you for the video. Just got my first honda and need all the help I can get ;)
What is the size of the oring?
The lower bolts were so tight i had to use and long extension with a breaker bar.
Hey you're awesome thanks for this I think I'll try to do this myself instead of having shops rip me off. I do work on my own cars but I don't usually mess with timing stuff. Thank u
Good day sir is it the same way if i change O-ring for my honda city 200 type z. Thank you godbless
Hey man awesome video. Mine leaks oil between the distributor cap. Is there a separate oil ring on that?
I saw a video where the mechanic recommends replacing the distributor if oil got into it ? Does your distributor give you any issue (Example: sputter, misfiring and stalling) or just oil leak? thanks

yup yup, going to be doing this on my civic build. on channel soon
What about the other o ring at the base of the shaft of the distributor
That seems to be the one that none of these guys ever change. I got a complete seal replacement kit for mine. 3 pieces including the standard O ring...
If you drive with an oil leak, would it spark fire from the engine's heat ?
Holy shit man thanks!!! Hell Yeah you just helped me big time! Liked and thumbs up!
You don't unhook battery when doing all this?
I have a 1997 Honda Odyssey. Car won’t start. 3 plugs don’t have a spark but one does. I checked the distributor cap and it had a little bit of oil. Have any ideas of what test I can do? Does it sound like it could be a bad distributor or just maybe spark plug wires?
If I rotated the forks on the distributor will that mess up the timing
What size was the o ring?
RockAuto says 26.5mm inner diameter
Inch and 4 clicks to the west
So, I have a question: how does marking where the distributor housing sit in relation to the block affect the timing? Doesn't the inside of the distributor rotate? @@CodytheCarGuy Yeah, a buddy of mine builds Hondas and he set me straight yesterday. I totally forgot about the cam LOL. Thanks for replying!
Does it matter if the internal slot is rotated 180 or does it need to go in exactly the same way it was taken out?
Well i ran in to an issue ive never seen before. Ordered the correct felpro oring but its too small. I believe the civic must have annaftermarket distributor and its oring is alot larger than the factory o-ring
when you are talking about the O ring that could go bad at :24, which part is that because that is where my oil leak is coming from and I don't know what the part is?
Hi Cody, so if a mark my distributor bfore taking off there is no way I would loose my timing, right? Thanks man.
yute yu it could spin while taking it off so make sure you look closely how it came off and watch it if spins your car won't start if it 180 backwards
What is the o ring part number
yes....why the Cody the Car Guy didn't give us the part number on that O Ring ?
I couldn't find the video for the vtech oring. Can you add the link or send me link? Great video
Good video, thanks for taking the time to record it. Btw did you check your timing afterwards?
I had it marked and put it back exact but i have done so many Honda's that when i drove it after i would have known if it was off.
Thanks for this man!
Where do you get the o ring at?
Most parts stores carry orings, but you can also get one from Honda .
Where else could be leaking because I already replaced the Distributor o-ring and the V-tech solenoid gasket?
There are 2 more seals on the shaft of the distributor that will also leak. To do this job properly you should replace them all. 3 total
What is the purpose of putting a marking?
The part confusing me is people mentioning timing. Is the only thing that could fuck up timing if you rotate the distributor the wrong way putting it back on? Half the videos mention checking timing and the other half dont
Great video, civics rock
Thanks man. Solid
What's the point of using marker if it only bolts on one way
Rotating it adjusts timing
Thanks so much man!
Did you have to mess with the timing ???
This helps! Thank you
Also there is mark on dis.to line your timing up
good fast vid cheers!
That little o-ring has left so many ppl stranded, myself included.
Will that cause a no start?
No not unless the inside seal is pouring oil inside the distributor cap. I would check for spark those coils can get hot and go bad also a bad main relay will keep it from starting. Without knowing the year and engine and what its doing its hard to diagnose. But always remember 3 main things Spark, Fuel, and Compression or in a Honda Timing
Mine's not the VTEC it's just a 1.6 I don't know what it is. I don't think I have that second one that you're doing
You have a d16y7 (non vtec). Second one is not on your motor
@@danhammes9427 d16y5
so sir this one has vtec? what is the engine code sir?
D16y8
Same process for a 99 accord 3.0 V6 - ?
Do you have to drain the oil first
No sir
Bought a 98 Ek hatch and took it to get a tune up, was told o have a distributor leak and it would cost 500$ to fix haha
Called a camshaft seal. Theres another one on the side of the timing belt.
I replsced thst o ring 3 tines it still leaks
There are 2 more seals on the shaft that should be replaced to do this job properly.
I just did this and my car will not start it just goes kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kkkkkkkkkk that is the sound..i just replaced the dam oring slipped it back my distributor has 2 bolts so there is no need for me to aligned
Thanks man
Thank you
hey thx you for the infor.
Handy fix !!
The ew oring should be
raised a little above
the groove mt
Distributor, yes yes

It took a while i just kept plugging along and making videos the subscribers will come if you have good content.
GREAT FIX...KOOO
Are you.....eric the car guy's son?
I bet this is my Leak, it's going all down the front of my engine, running underneath and on the transmission.
The distributor o ring leak is a common issue with those and the valve covers.
@@CodytheCarGuy is this a non interference engine or not
Oh it is an interference, if the timing belt breaks you can bend valves.
Theirs more o rings this video is cap
A bunch of videos where they leave the out changing the seals on the shaft which is crazy not to do since you are already taking it off.
I see you cut out a lot 😅😅
