However the main purpose of the film was to share my thoughts on the clothing I wear and equipment I use when I go out on my trips during the spring and summer. In this film I try and give an explanation as to why I purchased them, use them, as well as the item weights and costs involved.
This is far and away the best 'whats in my bag' video I've seen - and I've seen dozens. Lovely to see the kit in action as well as explanations of why you include each piece.
Thanks mate, much appreciated. Just packing for a two day mountain hike way up the west coast from tomorrow so will be getting put through its paces. Must be made with the temperatures over the next few days :0 Atb
Hi Ray. Cracking video. Always good to see what other wild campers have in their kit. I've been a big fan of Decathlon gear for a long time. It's great value and fit for purpose. I remember going to their stores in France years before they came over here. Really enjoyed seeing inside your rucksack Ray. Thanks for sharing.
Another great video. Thanks fro the gear review. Answered lots of my questions. Makes me home sick. Scotland is the most beautiful country in the world.
Man you have a way of putting things. I believe this is the first time i actually sat through a geartalk video without skipping! And a good camp! And yep, a lot of my stuff comes from Decathlon too.. the hunting section has nice stuff for wild campers..
Thanks very much for the kind words. Wasn't sure if it would be a good vlog or not and wasn't going to post it but as said above seems to have been well received. Atb
Many thanks as always Alan and hope you get some epic trips this year as well. Long may the good weather continue before we hit straight into Autumn. Atb
Hey Ray fame at last.. (I'm the guy that pestered Ray to make it.) I can understand why you hesitated to make and post it. But like others have all ready said, you made it interesting and enjoyable. Looking forward to part 2.
Great video again and interesting for me as a beginner. Everything is light weight so I've started small by going for a titanium cup like yours 😂 Take care and thanks for your amazing camera work. 😊👍
Hi , fairly new subscriber here and thoroughly enjoying your vlogs. I've just started getting back into hill wallking and your videos are inspiring me with new ideas of where to go. Keep up the good work and looking forward to the next one.
Just stumbled across your channel by chance, oh my god! Stunning footage and the kit shake down is just brilliant. Got my Xmas lists sorted already! Many thanks
Your best vid by a mile Ray, really informative and what stunning scenery. I use Decathlon for almost everything basically because here in Spain 2xxl is hard to get anywhere else. Their thermal long sleeved at just 6€ is the warmest I have found. The path back to the house looked amazing. Thanks for a great video look forward to part 2.
Brilliant video again.. I'm heading for a camp next week so this came just at the right time.. Love the subject matter and the presentation.. Cannae wait till next one... 👍
Excellent info on your gear Ray. I'm a big fan of Decathlon too. Their clothing fits me well being 6'3" and has been very durable. An excellent return policy too. Great views up to Ben Vorlich. Always welcome a wee breeze in Scotland during the summer months to keep the midges at bay. Looking forward to the follow up mate................Take care. Andy. 😉👍👍👣👣
Thanks Andy. It is a good shop and majority of my stuff comes from them and done me very well. Dont need to spend a fortune on the big name brands to get some quality kit. Atb
Excellent ‘how to’ vlog and in a great style. Couldn’t have timed this better for my first wild camp of 2018 this weekend. It was also brilliant to see Ben Vorlich’s views as my last trip (and vlog) was ruined by clouds at the summit. Great vlog as always 👍🏼
Great stuff ray. I like a good kit list. Even though you said you go light there was loads of gear. I’ll be watching to see how you pack it all. I’m the worlds worst packer 😆 good to see you back in the tent in the mountains. Lovely backdrops to your narratives too. Ben vorlich is Now added to my list. Atb
Thanks Andy. Hope you are keeping well and Vorlich would be a great trip for you. Really nice straight walk in but if the weather is kind, stunning 360 views. Hopefully bump into yourself and Eddie at some point this year. Atb
I hope to do a bit of overnight camping myself this year Ray, think at this time of year (Summer) its the best way as you can catch a sunset then be on location the next morning for a sunrise, I'm not a hardened venturer like yourself, but would like to do more, especially during the summer months (Bit of a fair weather camper)...lol
great vid, really enjoyed it. Good alternative way of doing the typical "whats in my bag" type vid. I managed to bag Ben Vorlich last week, great Munro.
excellent, great memories of doing that Munro walking in from Callendar, looking forward to part 2,, I was in Lewis last summer doing the Island string down to Barra, fantastic place, going back next year probably, super info thanks, will be checking out some of the gear you listed. Very interested in the camera waist belt/bag,,,
Very informative video, I've been wondering for a while what you carry on your mountain trips. I'm just back from a camp on Carn a' Mhaim and I did a video on my kit list while I was there - the wild camp thing seems to be a popular theme on the landscape photography channels right now. I suspect your bag is very much lighter than mine though!! Lovely images as well, nice soft light over the mountains.
Thanks for watching Douglas. I have been doing with wildcamping and munro bagging for a long time now and it was the filmmaking that got me into photography. As you say more photographers are going the other way and getting into the wild camping. Atb
I think that shows in your vlogs, you have hill knowledge that most don't as (me included) others tend to use the camera as the reason to head for the wild, empty places. I did hillwalking years ago, then stopped. Then I started being more serious about my photography and, being inspired by the mountain photographers, I now find I'm back in the hills with a camera. Looking forward to part 2 and then the Harris episodes!
Awesome video Ray. I good to know what people carry when out in the wilds and camping overnight. I watch a guy called Dave Morrow and he has just done a similar video. Loved the image. I assume you are not using the A7 anymore, I remember one of your previous videos on that subject. Looking forward to part 2 and the Harris video!!
Thanks Tim. yes I am sticking with the Sony A6300 for now to do both the photography and filming, spaced with my B-Roll camera. Like the compact size but at times the Sony colours are killing me for both images and stills. My Nikon D7200 seemed to have better colours. May have a work around on this and trying different things that I may do vlog on. It was my first time to Lewis / Harris and is one of the nicest places in Scotland I have ever visited.
Really enjoyed the vid , great to see what other phots carry . What tripod do you use as my manfrotto with head is about 1.7 kg far to heavy . ATB Dave 👍🏻
Hi Paul. It is a Eu and UK medium. Need to loose a few pounds that I put on since Christmas as I am starting to burst out of it :). I am a 42" as well. Atb
Hi Ray, I love all your info and hiking videos, I'm new to it so just starting out! Something I did want to know though is, what kind of mic are you using in this video, the sound's really clear considering where you are, thanks in advance 👍
Hi Watty, I use the Rode SmartLav+ lavalier microphone with adapter into Sony UX560 Audio recorder. Also have Rode Video Micro on camera as backup. Hope that helps. Atb
Always enjoy a what's in my bag video but you presented it in a great way. I'm assuming you were using the a6000 to take your shots? (Great shots btw!)
Hi Jamie. Yes have gone back the way to the A6300. Using it for the photography and filming but may change again in the future. If I was selling prints or making a living from the shots then I would consider a possible upgrade, but for me as a hobby it was getting too expensive. At times the Sony can be a pain but it is the best all round camera for mew at the moment and maybe see what evolves with the A6700 if it is ever released. Atb
I been pondering what rucksack to get for my first wild camp for ages. I been looking at 65-70 Ltr one tho and after seeing the Marmot Graviton you got, well that looks ideal because I'm only going to be out one or two nights per trip. So thats what I'll be getting Ray lol. Btw has it got a rain cover?. Atb, Mark :-)
Sorry just seen message. The rucksack does not come with rain cover. However everything I use is in its own waterproof sack or if I know it is gong to be very wet I but in a large rubble sack / bin bag inside first as a liner, then put everything inside that. Atb
When I am out I usually have my plastic trowel and sometimes even take dog poo bags that I ziplock and bring back ;) However the small amount of food I eat when out never progress to worrying about that situation very often. Atb
Ha, ha, it is very handy for that. Will do a film on it soon but it looks like they don't make them anymore. You need to keep an eye out on Ebay and such likes for one to come up for sale.
However the main purpose of the film was to share my thoughts on the clothing I wear and equipment I use when I go out on my trips during the spring and summer. In this film I try and give an explanation as to why I purchased them, use them, as well as the item weights and costs involved.
Renegade Scot i
You've got the best wildcamping youtube channel hands down.
Thanks, but not sure about that. Atb
This is far and away the best 'whats in my bag' video I've seen - and I've seen dozens. Lovely to see the kit in action as well as explanations of why you include each piece.
Many thanks Curtis. Wasn't going to post it as I though it was a bit boring and long winded :)
Super helpful kit recommendations! Your images are cracking too! I just wish Kent wasn't so far away from Scotland 😃
Great video lots of useful information, lovely images as well.
Thanks Jonathan, much appreciated. Atb
Really enjoyed this Ray.. nice to see the ins and outs of you trips
Thanks mate, much appreciated. Just packing for a two day mountain hike way up the west coast from tomorrow so will be getting put through its paces. Must be made with the temperatures over the next few days :0 Atb

Hi Mate. Will talk about it in my next part. Atb
Lovely video and images. What is the orange chest rig bag you use please?
It is a really old item now called a RibzPack from Ribzwear in the USA. Think it only comes in black now. Atb
Hello sir, what size is your top... I am normally a 42" with a belly haha
Hi Paul. It is a Eu and UK medium. Need to loose a few pounds that I put on since Christmas as I am starting to burst out of it :). I am a 42" as well. Atb

Thanks for going through all the gear..my camera bag with tripod weighs 9.5kg..you must be hauling about 15kg when camping?? 😩
No where near that. One of the benefits of going with the mirrorless A6300. All will be revealed in part 2. ;)
I been pondering what rucksack to get for my first wild camp for ages. truckertaff Hope it serves you well.
Thin soil up there. What do you do for a crap...no burial opportunities up there?
When I am out I usually have my plastic trowel and sometimes even take dog poo bags that I ziplock and bring back ;) However the small amount of food I eat when out never progress to worrying about that situation very often. Atb
I want one of your camera bags not for my camera think it will stop the need of holding my stomach in
Ha, ha, it is very handy for that. Will do a film on it soon but it looks like they don't make them anymore. You need to keep an eye out on Ebay and such likes for one to come up for sale.
Loved this Ray. Clicking on part 2 now. Thanks so much for making these. :)
