- Did the R32 Survive Tail of the Dragon and if so how did it do? I took the R32 down to the Tail of the Dragon and pushed it really hard. What broke on the car? Did the tires hold up? How are the r32 brakes? Does it need a supercharger? What is Wookies in the Woods? All that and the best VR6 exhaust sounds!

Having gone from BFG GForce Comp 2 A/S on my Mkvi to what the PO of my Mkiv put on it is killing me and made realize how much tires make a huge difference. I could almost never hit the limit of those BFGs and these little 15” OEM like tires offer nothing. 16” wheels and BFGs are definitely in the cards this summer for my rehab.
That engine has such a distinct exhaust note - I love it!!! The growl on acceleration and the burble when you let off is music to my motorhead ears. Gotta love those VR6s. I'm currently into the restoration of a '65 Chevy Corvair, w/ a rear-mounted 3.0L boxer six attached to a transaxle, similar to a Corvette suspension. I won't have so much of an exhaust note, as I've always enjoyed the "stealth" factor. Perhaps I'll crash the next Dragon run . . . lol Glad you made it and didn't have to sing the side-of-the-road blues.

Get those apexes down pat, and you'll be worrying more about anti-sway bars, springs, brake pads, and tires. Keep em coming man! :)

Sick!!!! Dude I got a quick question for you. Are you able to make a video on how to repair cruise control on mk4 golf? I changed a CV joint on the UK passenger side last year on my Gt tdi 1.9 pd130 and since than i has not worked. Also i have to say your videos are freaking amazing on you explain things and really give out the confidence to roll up your sleeve and do some DIY on your car. So far that thank you!!

Hey Charles, it was really nice meeting you in person at WITW. I hope you remember me, I was the guy that showed you the video of the GTI with issues during the event and that we (son and me) about what was the problem. I turned out you were on the money and the issue was indeed a broken axle at the driver's side. Man what a huge relief it was went we got word that was the problem with the car and not the tranny.
I just want to let you know about it, to thank you for the time you spent with us to check at that issue and for your advice.

Discovered the Dragon back in 2010 when I was working onsite at a customer's in Knoxville but unfortunately I could never take my car there as it was back home in Quebec. Now that I know about this event I'm thinking about taking my 2018 Golf R there next year. Would make for a nice road trip.

I have a Mk4 GTi VR6 that I purchased not too long ago with about 140k on the clock, and was wondering what should I look out for as far as maintenance for this kind of mileage on the vehicle. I'm glad the R32 is in top form! It never ceases to amaze me how many people neglect the suspension/brake/chassis bits on their performance cars, so I'm really glad to see that you tackled all of those first before adding more power, and I'm sure it paid off big time. I'm currently redoing a lot of things on my new-to-me C5 A6 4.2, and suspension/chassis is definitely on the list... there's a lot more parts to tackle on this one than on my AMGs!

Im not a massive Volkswagen fan as I work on them all the time, but I seen the new Golf R in the showroom while I was collecting parts and fell in love. Unfortunately I'm a mechanic so chances of owning it are slim 😂

"The last thing you want to do is have an unsafe car at the tail of the dragon" Ehhhhh, makes it more exciting. Tires are absolutely necessary. Being able to push hard through the corners under as much throttle as possible is the key to really having a great time out there. Brakes.....like you said, good to have sorted, but not really necessary. Ask me how I know.....hahaha. I ended up pushing it a bit headed home in the rain through the dragon and was very impressed with how well the Continental Extreme contact Sport DW held through those drenched bends. Wondering how the 500s would have done. Those are the tires I had my heart set on last year, but no one had them in stock in my size :( P.S. You should have hit me up for the photo. could have at least provided a full resolution version ;)

Good stuff, looks like a great meet! How far is your drive out there? We took the Type R there recently...the 4-5 hour (based out of Charlotte) one way trek was worth it...especially because we encountered almost no traffic at all on 129. Cherohala got a bit spoiled at the end...

Yeah man! I got both ECM and Haldex tune. wish I could have driven a little more out there with both...
For sure. Once I install my poly bushings and throw on some new rubber to my RPF1’s I’ll be interested to see the bigger differences that haldex time has. But it’s okay you didn’t get to push it when you were there... that’s what next year is for! See you in April

Curious if people were talking about the 7.5 R from Canada for the crazy colour options? Noticing VW brought a blue one to the event. That's unfortunate, people would have drooled over an orange, green, or purple (etc).

They are. They were solid but I trashed them in about 15k miles and a handful of AutoX events. Great tire for the price point. Not the best in class but a solid value

Exhaust a bit loud imo. The stock exhaust is just fine. You dont really want it to sound like something it isnt....a race car. Wife has had one for 8 years, still on original exhausr. The car is 13 years old now and still drives superbly.
Dutchbuild makes a full stand-alone haldex controller.
I just checked those tires, 2022, Fiestone Indy 500, in four yrs the price has doubled!!! $210 a pop!

Hey charles, loved the video as always. I noticed that in the clip of the ride back the visibility was pretty poor with the rain. I would recommend you use “rain x” on the windows and windshield. It makes the glass water repellent and increases visibility in the rain, you pretty much don’t need wipers if you’re going at around 45mph bc the wind pushes it away. It’s truly amazing, check it out im not sponsored or a salesman but it’s incredible what it can do

Hey I got a question.
My 2001 mk4 vr6 gti has the abs light and the traction symbol on the dash but it only comes on when I drive a few miles down the street and it doesn’t blink or beep so I know it’s not the ABS module pump.
I was thinking it could be an ABS wheel speed sensor wire because I replaced all wheel speed sensors on all fours. What do you suppose?
Step one is check faults. If no faults check alignment. When I finished the R32 it was so bad the traction light was on with no faults.

Hey, Charles, I changed the oil in my GTI recently and upon replacing the drain plug it felt gritty in the threads. To the point where it got caught up a few times going back in my hand. I checked my oil for metal flakes but didn't see anything, and continued to pull my dipstick to have a look at 100 mile intervals. Should I be worried?
It's the haldex tune available for a b6 Passat 4 motion?

No just add the R32 to the fleet
tdi 150 is a very cool daily. 1.8t is far more easy and cheap to tune. but r32 has a soul. and I really do think one of the best engine notes of all time

Any idea on the make of the front splitter shown at 2:43 that appears to be on the Mk7.5 facelift? OEM or aftermarket?
That's a MK7.5 Golf R with the Oettinger body kit.
When do these events happen? Have always wanted to take the car up there (have hit it on the bike many times). I love it up there (florida sucks for driving)

They are B8s. I called Bilstein and they said with any lowering to go with P8
Thanks for the quick reply. I have the Euro R32 springs and considering going with the B6 since the drop is not as much as most springs. Based on your comments now I'm wondering if B8s are the way to go. Currently have Koni Yellow w/ 25k miles and I no longer need the adjustability but want something with more control than the OEM Monroes. Koni's finish has to be the worst in the business, they look like crap now.
I currently have a stock exhaust on my mk4 vr6, what is a good exhaust setup that you would recommend on a low budget? Maybe muffler delete?

HumbleMechanic You know that sounds kinda silly, right? RAIN-X is a couple of bucks and some elbow grease. There's a fair chance it'll rain again before you replace the windshield.

I would love to participate the Wookies in the Woods event someday with my MK4... But for that I would need to get the car shipped over to the USA and back to Germany.. And the PD TDI Engine isn't nearly a wookie... :(

You’d take your car in. The tune was a nice improvement on throttle response. But Not much in HP

Dyno runs will tell a lot. Or maybe lap timing. I’m not a consistent enough driver for that to be accurate. So the “butt dyno” will be be great tell 😂

A shop local to me offers UM tuning. They said the "no lift shift" is pretty hard on the clutch. I'd be interested to know your thoughts on that.
Opted for the APR tune on my MK7 for now.
I haven't been able to get it to work yet. I am wondering if they didn't put the goodies on when they tuned it. It was 1am after all HAHAH
My no lift shift is a bit odd too. Thought my “launch control” (it’s just a modified rev limiter, let’s be real) has worked flawlessly every time
Interesting. Mine doesn't do anything. I was playing around with it the other day. I am gonna swing it by Apex Tuning and see if we can get it figured out.
what i meant what are the differences between the 2004 and 2008 r32"s- besides the manual in the 04 and the dsg in the 08?
are the suspensions and brakes all the same?
It's a totally different generation car. The computer architecture is totally different. The engine should be the same, or vary similar.

Tons of roads in the area on the TN side are a much better drive and not nearly as many cops. You just gotta ask the right locals.

The video with good audio is from Hell bender.
Hellbender was a great road. I enjoyed it much more than the dragon, but I think that might be due to the lack of pressure from behind, and people going 10mph in front of you.

Is it only for R/VR6? I understand the wookies/VR6 name... but would someone with a non-VR6 GTI be frowned upon?

The event is of course built around the R32 and Golf R, but it’s public roads. :).
