  • Deciding if you need to break in a barrel is not as easy as many think. In this video, I discuss the thought process I go through in deciding if I need to break in a barrel or not.
    Please share, like, and subscribe.
This is obviously a joke, but to clarify, I DO NOT break in barrels and I find that to be a waste of time.

It's the nut behind the gun, that frequently determines group size. At my nearby public range, the fellow next bench over wanted to know how much my 7mm magnum kicked. He shot my gun and printed cloverleafs, besting my best effort in half. Wow, gotta work on my technique!

Not long ago I had a rifle built and I wondered about barrel break in. I used a Shilen barrel so I contacted them. They told me not to worry about barrel break in because the only part of the barrel that may need any break in is the chamber itself wherein the machine marks are at 90 degrees from the bullet travel. I also contacted Kreiger barrels and received the same advice.

Erik, came back and watched this one because something occurred to me today (yes, it's a slow day here in Tennessee!). Always appreciate your videos. Anyway, I agree with you about the barrel break-in hocus pocus, but it occurs to me that, because you clean your barrels down to bare metal after every shooting session, no matter how many shots you fire, you are probably in effect treating your barrel almost exactly the same way as the barrel break-in folks...just over a bit longer period of time. Now again, I don't buy this barrel break-in voodoo any more than you do, but I'm just thinking out loud here. If one goes through one of these prescribed barrel break-in procedures to the letter, and then seldom cleans their barrel thereafter, I see no way they are any better off in the long run than someone who runs your routine.

  • @orionexplorer

Barrel break in is so simple everyone wants to make it into some big UA-cam craze. Step 1: Clean the firearm. Always do this before you fire it the first time just to make sure that it is lubed properly. Step 2: Take the firearm to the range. Step 3: Shoot and have fun. No fancy cleaning between rounds, just shoot for as long as you want, or ammo supply last. Step 4: Take it home. Step 5: Clean it. I don't care what may be the going fad about leaving your firearms dirty, no it probably won't hurt your firearm but if you are so an** about break in and accuracy then clean the bloody thing when you are done. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.
Another guntuber sent letters/e-mails to over 20 companies I believe it was about barrel break-in and they all said the same thing, it's not needed. I don't care if it's a pistol, revolver, rifle, or shotgun clean it when you first get it and clean it when you are done. Just do this and you will have a firearm that will last you for your entire life.

At the time I didn’t know there was such a thing as breaking in the barrel and my first five shots out of it were to sight it in at 100 yards. I then shot about 40 more to find and verify a good load for it. It shot 5/8” with 160 Partitions leaving the barrel at 3000 FPS and continued to do so after 500 plus rounds. I don’t know how well it didn’t after that since someone stole it...Jerk wads! Anyway, that was funny!

I have tried breaking in barrels before, I think its a scam from the ammo manufacturers, and bore solvent makers to get you to shoot and clean more. I don't have custom match barrels, just budget hunting rifles, so I do a break in of sorts when I get the gun before the range. I clean the barrel like normal, patches, and brushes to make sure its clean. Then I follow up with jb bore paste, then jb bore bright (polish) exactly per the instructions. I guess I figure it is a poor mans lapping job. After that Its off to the range to sight it in. Generally the guns shoot consistently right from sight in, and I just keep them clean and lightly oiled since they are carbon steel.

The barrel doesn't need a break in period but the bolt does. You have to have a special break in lube to do it for making the bolt slide as smoothly and as axially to the barrel as possible. Only that way you will get maximum accuracy out of your rifle. This video here is totally wrong and misleading.

Barrel Break-in doesn’t make sense on a precision barrel that has been machined perfectly and hand lapped. On a mass produced factory rifles you may see a slight benefit if any due to machining marks and slight imperfections like metal burs during the rifling or gas hole drilling process. I personally don’t go any further than shooting a small handful of rounds followed by a quick cleaning to remove any excess copper and powder fouling and then call it good. I mostly do this as a safety check on a new barrel after installation and not because I’m trying to to break in the barrel.

lmfao best break in vid I seen . I was at the range and asked how I was going to break in my new barrel pointed to a 300 bag of rounds .Followed by my can of G96 is waiting at home. I think the look I got was bewilderment ,at the total lack of cleaning that was going to happen .Question anybody know how military groups break in their small arms ?

Are your barrels already chambered when you receive them? Awesome aren’t they lapped barrel after they’ve been made?

No, just rifled. I chamber them.

There are many opinions on whether or not to break in a new barrel.
Here is an undeniable fact -
The top shooters at my club, ALL break in their barrels.
Want to shoot like the best shooter you know ?
    Do what they do.

This guy is one of the best shooters in the country, he was able to shoot a 1.3” group at 1,000 yards. If only he listened to your club buddies and broke in his barrel he might have been able to get that to less than an inch

@@bigz5262 you make a very valid point & one that should be obvious & clear to me.
But 40 years of breaking in barrels & getting decent results, it’s hard to quit on it. I’m certainly not arguing his point, just stating what I see routinely.

@@bigz5262 LOL 😂 It probably is mental.
BUT ☝️ let’s say you just forked out 5 grand for a custom rifle & your smith says, “be sure & break er in” & someone in You Tube land says you don’t need to, what would you do ?
EC ain’t paying for your barrel if it shoots crappy. You are.
Although conversely … I would love to be in line to buy the barrels EC throws away. So who knows 🤷‍♂️

When I got my new brux barrel I asked them about barrel break in.
They told me to shot 4 rounds then run a patch through it, do this 3 or 4 times and thats it.
I shot 4 rounds and cleaned it and there was some copper fouling, I shot 4 more and cleaned again and there was a slight trace of copper, i shot 4 more and cleaned again and there was no sign of any copper so I left it at that.

They probably get asked that a lot by people who have been convinced that break in is necessary. It's simpler to have a standard answer of something that is fairly easy and not harmful, than to risk alienating some of those customers who think they know better.

    • @ErikCortina

This is my thought as well.
If they told you not to break it in, a lot of people would question it. So they just give people what they want. Lol

@@ErikCortina Love it! I've not been shooting long, but copped a bit of crap for believing i didn't need to waste time, $ and barrel life on that carry on. my engineering background had a real problem with the break in recommendation. I Could find no satisfactory explanation for what was supposedly happening or a difference in the "requirements" between a 4140 or 416 stainless barrel either.
