All great lures. I've been switching out all my treble hooks for doubles on my lures. They're easier to remove, faster to remove, and less damaging to the fish. And I've noticed no reduction in the number of fish I catch.
My buddies and I used to fish strictly for pike (for many years). The best lures for us were spinnerbaits (not the inline type), spoons (daredevle or knockoffs), and the husky jerk (HJ-14). All worked great. But the husky jerk was the most dependable of them all. That pause and suspension like you said, was irresistible. We'd even test the husky jerk out in a fish tank before using, to make sure it suspended perfectly. If it tended to rise up at all, we'd use something called Suspendots by Storm, little lead stickers that you could add onto the bait to weigh it down ever so slightly. I can't wait to get back into fishing again.
I’ve also exclusively fished for pike for a handful of years now, and once ya know how to properly work a spoon nothing beats it. They hit as it as it slowly falls every time and it’s so satisfying.
Just started pike fishing and its so weird i always get the opposite, the go after the pause. Its like the pause gets them interested but the go triggers that bite, either way I feel like I've finally perfected my spoon jigging. Feels good to catch fish consistently.
Yeah pike love spoon. That wobble and thumping vibration are irresistible to them. Plus you can cast em a mile and cover so much water. In deeper water, they can't be beat.
Great video. I have caught my largest pike on spinners in Canada. Good numbers on Williams Wablers and little Cleos. Often I go to them when the bite is slow, and they seem to deliver... I agree that the jerk baits are the most fun to fish; especially since the strike almost always comes on the pause! They are much more versatile that top water baits, but have the same excitement! Thanks
I inheireted a bunch of Canadian Wigglers from my late uncle who fished in Canada a lot. If he had them, I know they work! My dad just gave me his Musky fishing gear (he lives on Lake St. Claire) and even he had a cool green Canadian Wiggler in there.
I've caught a lot of Pike on lures, here in England. Favourites are spoons around the 1oz. weight mark ( Daredevle-style), 1oz. bucktails, 6 inch Swim-Whizz cranks, and Smity Slaptail surface baits.
I love to fish! I caught my first pike today. I was fishing for bass with a Senko / Texas rig. I normally fish for largemouth bass but I need to branch out a little bit. Thanks for the tips.
Well, like I told you today, I haven't fished in a long, long, long time myself (like 35 years) BUT when my dad took me out in the old days for me it was always the good old red devil. I bought my kids one when they were small and I bought my grandson one (painted with a Canada flag) when we took him camping with us. I always cast and tried to see how far I could send that thing. Funniest time was out with my dad and there was a circle of about 5 boats in an open area near a marsh. Everyone was fishing along the edges of the marsh and well, I was casting into the middle of them all. Lo and behold I caught a desent sized pike and that fish dragged my lure around all over the place and my line got tangled in with the lines out of at least three of the boats. My dad was a hollerin' telling everyone to reel in their lines and trying to help me at the same time bring that pike in but that fish got away. It musta been bigger than I thought at the time cause he was pretty mad at all of them. Looking back at it in my memory I though it was hilarious and one of those memories to treasure as he laughed about it afterwards as well. Yup. Red devil all the way dude. It's got my vote.
Great video!! I just subscribed, and saved this. Very informative and to-the-point. You outlined a variety of effective lures, as well as when, where and why they work so well. I'll definitely come back to you for more pointers as my family and I begin our quest for pike and muskies here in central and southern PA.
My personal fave is taking the guts of a spinner jig, threading on to a large, heavy eyepin a rubber swimming frog. So it’s a spinning frog jig! I’ve had little pike fight over it... best part, I made two. Gotta love when spinner jigs give you two frogs in a pack. 👍
Great video man! I have to agree with your top choice, I just caught 2 pike yesterday on a fire tiger pattern Rapala Husky Jerk bait. At least it looked like that one, mine has 3 treble hooks and it suspends but slowly floats if I leave it sit for awhile. Like you said, perfect for cruising the tops of weed beds and not getting hung up. I got some 8" bull dawgs to try this year, I haven't been able to fish them much yet. Hoping they produce a monster! God bless you, tight lines!
Paddle tails i like throwing on the bottom. Had decent catch rates this year using 6 inch shad paddle tails with 8/0 swimbait hooks. The most unique strategy ive done with a paddle tail was set it up with big worm hook on a carolina rig and a 1ounce egg sinker. Caught a 12lb northern on the drop, didnt get any others like that but that was interesting lol
Yep fire tiger wiggler has landed me some giants over the years as well as the red and white version , My two main pike lures are the wiggler and the cotton cordel lipless cranks, particular the chrome black in 3 1/2
Agree I'v caught also a lot of great pikes and walleys on a 5"12 cm and a 4"10 cm Husky Jerk colour Helsinki Shad and a Fire Tiger.. very good video and explanations👌
Thank you for the tips. I recently found a body of water near my house I didn’t know was there and assumed it had bass at least and I accidentally caught multiple pike on a Texas rig sanko and a Ned rig. I’m going to go back tomorrow with some of these and see if I can catch a giant
Biggest pike I ever caught was eight pounds on a black and gold panther martins. And one versatile lure for anything that'll bite is those pre rigged swim bait jig heads in the orange and black and the perch colors. For some reason they produce well for me I over and over from largemouth to musky to walleye to catfish and blu gill
My favorite has to be the heddon zara super spook jr. Caught my pb on it. A nice 36" 15lb northern pike. It also catches smallies like crazy and its really fun to fish.
chatterbait. i'm just getting back into fishing and i recall as a kid my best days fishing were catching northern on spinnerbaits and topwater buzz baits. i'm just getting back into it and last night i was killing it on a 3/8 oz chatterbait with a small swimbait trailer and caught 3 personal best size largemouth.
Agreed with you there here in N. Idaho....the size 12 in fire tiger husky jerk is top notch. 35 Lbs and 49 inches up here on one. Great video! Keep them coming.
@@samuelauten4738 this time of year it's the flashy silver spooned spinners...or one with orange chartreuse blades...Johnson silver minnow works good going through the weed channels as well.
Big spinner baits, with a paddle tail or mister twister thread on the hook. Beefs up the spinner even more, put a big blade on it for that extra vibration. Pike crush it!!
My most consistent lures for pike are these dollorama 5 inch baby pike lures (they look like a baby pike) spoons and inline spinners, including my home made modified inlines but instead of a feathered treble hook, you attach a small minnow jig head and a curly tail or boot tail. I have had small pike fight over those.
A good lure is blue fox. They are amazing a co worker let me use one for salmon and ended up catching a 45 inch northern pike. Should put it on the wall but imma eat it.
5 of diamonds is what I caught my largest pike on. Also, try head bangers as a change-up bait. Just something off the wall that the fish might get fooled by in pressured lakes.
Gold 3/4 Little Clio spoon , very fast retrieve 3 turns with a drop , outperforms all my pike stuff period, when water warms up . Pike is my favorite sport fish.
The lure that worked so well on last year's trip to Canada was a perch colored Rattletrap it caught trophy pike, Smalllmouths and even big perch. it came home very scarred.
Good list almost mirrors mine. But my largest pike a 47 came on a # 5 Mepp’s. Red/white blade and white dressed tail. The double bladed Mepp’s #5 are awesome as well. You can made your spoons more weed less buy changing hook to a single and you can put a small twister on or fly. Just trim them down so the spoon runs correctly. Mann’s Minus -1 5/8oz 3 1/4 inch casts well runs shallow and displaces a lot of water the fish key in on it. Colors white Yellow and Firetiger are what works why pike attack from below and what’s the color of the prey there attacking belly’s whitefish white, Walleye’s yellow, perch Firetiger. On your Swim bait on the weighted hook paint them Red on the lead weight.
some guy who fishes my local tiny pond with huge pike said the same, he used a size 5 mepps red and white and caught three fish on back to back casts after me and my friends fished the same spot with various lures for hours, said he'd fished there for 15 years and it always caught fish
That bit about dressing your spoons with plastic is a great tip. Probably my favorite candidate is a 3/4 oz Williams spoon, with a single hook and a 3" Mr Twister it runs true, a 4" twister will overload it a bit and make it plane towards the surface... but you can work it shallow and slow with lots of twitches to good effect. If you use a 4" double tail it will plane on the surface like a topwater. Deadly if you drag it across weedbeds and let it flutter down into the pockets.
Biggest pike I ever caught was on a big spinner bait with a fat head minnow and I also sprayed it attraction spray lol it was in lake James 39" and like over 20 pounds also caught several 25" in the same day also a couple bass all on same lure lol
Back in 1989, I went on a USAF trip to Cold Lake, Alberta for Maple Flag (joint USAF/Canadian Air Force exercise) and we got to fish on Cold Lake, which was reserved for military personnel and maybe locals. Caught a buttload of Pike on the Red Devil and Five of Diamonds. Even from the shore. What a great trip that was.
It's so funny, the biggest one I ever caught was on a tiny crappie jig! I've thrown and had success with bigger baits (spoons, rapalas, top water baits) but these predators tend to break the whole bigger baits means bigger fish. They'll eat anything lol n that day my lunker I got was after a lil appetizer not interested in the big meal.
Wondering if part of the Canadian Wiggler success is the fire- tiger. Have used many crankbait lures against the tried and true 5 of diamonds. Found the pike seem to absolutely crave the fire tiger pattern
If youre still active how do you feel about little cleo spoons mine I got is half bright light blue and half glow in the dark. Id appreciate you're opinion. I'm great with trout but this summe I'm going for pike and bass and it's new territory but i have some knowledge. I picked up a panther sonic wpinner and a few different colored mepps aglias in various sizes and also got a few feog lures of various sizes amd kinds, one spnner frog that makes it look like it swims and splashes, one super realistic one, one big realisistic popping frog, and one small popping frog. Mostly just want opinjons on the color choice ofnmy cleo and chances of cafching bass or pike woth the aglias or cleos. Thank you in advance if you get to me 🙏
My third fav is a jerk bait then spinnerbaits and my favorites are top water baits specifically frog baits because of the striking from the fish I get is just crazy
Yeah, I've had my best paddle tail pike action on a big 7 incher. Also, oddly, big pike and 'eyes often hit a smallish (3 inch, I think) bluegill swim shad. Dunno what it is about that swim shad, but it'll catch anything that can eat it.
Great video, I personally have had a lot of success with rapala floating lures while fishing for pike. Gold or yellow seems to work well. Insta sub btw!
My favourite lake is about 150 miles north of Lake Superior. I use a white Rapala and catch giant pike walleye and whitefish. The main pray for these large fish is small whitefish. My girlfriend tried every lure I have (I have lots of lures) and nothing catches them like the white Rapala.
I have every color and most sizes of daredevils and the funniest thing is I was using a big red and was just getting hits and then I changed to a small version of it and I caught 3 nice pike
i personally love using bigger buck tails and musky lures latter in the summer. I cought a 45 inch pike in lake of the woods a week ago. I really don't know what to use in the spring though
Real early I do best with big dead baits under a float, in back bays with a mud bottom and cattail shore. As the water warms I move to rocky shallow flats, and I mean really shallow... enough that the winter ice has carved the rocks up into bars and troughs, which is the best cover until the weeds come in. The fish are scattered so covering more ground with a Wiggler or spoon will out produce bait. My favorite is when the water warms up just enough to wet wade. You can cover a lot of ground from shore, the weeds are just starting to come in, and any time you start snagging a little of that first weedy peach fuzz, you can bet there are some decent pike concentrated around it. One day last spring I spent the day wade fishing several km of shoreline with only limited luck, about mid afternoon I started getting a little bit of weeds on my hook. I slowed down and started trying different lures, when I tried a 5/8 oz blue and silver Len Thompson things took right off, I ended up catching almost a dozen pike between 36 and 42" in just a couple hours, all in less than 100 yards of shoreline.
Top 3 for me would be spoons, spinnerbaits, and dead baits. I switch out the treble for a single on my spoons, and use various plastic trailers to alter the action, speed, and running depth. I dont pack Canadian Wigglers all year, but in early spring I've always got a couple. They suck around weeds, but over shallow rocks they are great. Something about that brass lip smacking off the bottom seems to set pike off, and for whatever reason they rarely seem to snag on rocks, unlike most other lures.
Yeah honestly dead baiting for pike works better than anything else. Pike are more or less bottom feeders half the time, I never really realized that until I started catching them on cut bait when I was catfishing.
Interesting, dead baits seem to work best for me early, when they are concentrated around spawning locations. Once they scatter I have better results covering more water with lures. I drift my bait under a float, and periodically work the float like a topwater to get their attention. Also had good luck flatlining the bait, no float or sinker, like a very slow jerk bait, maybe even letting it sit several minuets between twitches. I find using a float improves my hookup percentage though.
My best by far has been a #4 gold Mepps aglia squirrel tail but 5 is awesome too. 3/4 & 1 oz spinnerbaits are awesome and of course the tried & true red & white daredevil spoon.
Pike will hit darn near any type of lure that you throw at it. I grew up in upstate NY fishing for them and speak from experience. Top 5 blah, throw the cheapest lure at them because they're going to destroy it physically after time. The mepps black fury and comets have always produced for me. I saw some fools throw custom swim baits, glides, and depps and chuckled knowing those lures are trashed after a few fish.
...not trying to catch pike here in mid-MI but in last 2 yrs I've caught 3. one was a 11" baby. All 3 were caught on a 10" black and blue w/a chartreuse tip plastic worm.
Eppinger Red & White Dardevle 1.5 oz nickel is my "stranded on a desert island" lure. I've caught just about every freshwater species on it: largemouth, walleye, Northerns, and even perch! Make sure you use the real Eppingers and not cheap imitations -- they don't have the same action. They can be cast, trolled, and even jigged.
From UK, had a lure, it was cheap and poorly constructed, about 3.5 inch crankbait Floating and cranked down to about 8 inch with an aggresive wiggle, in spring on River Seven it took numerous pike to 17lb including a Zander on a Snny day at the surface, you know that is almost unheard of. Lure was a bright leaf green with yellow belly, this colour is deadly on sunny days. Lure was battered that much, what looked like car filler started to crack and fall off this lure, hooks were cheap and wire like got smashed, tried stronger hooks but altered lure action so it was retired..I call ed the Flying Banana
Spinners and lipless crank baits destroy pike. Specifically rattle traps that really vibrate. The only lake around me that has pike is a 107 acre flood control reservoir that gets overfished a lot during hard water season. Managed to catch two 30 inch 6 pounders the last two times I’ve been their on rattle traps, the key is to fish them hard and fast to really get them to vibrate and attract pike.
Same thing here, big spinners and jerk baits for 99% of fish.
To stop Suspendots to fall off, I 5min-epoxy coat them. Did that to the StikePro Busterjerks.
Got to admit the 5 of diamonds has worked - my PB pike from it!
No now I want another video about the paddle tail
LOL coming right up!
That used to be my favorite pile lure I’ve caught a lot from it

My grandpa always used those firetiger Canadian wigglers for pike. I got and took notes on many of his old lures

Great tackle box with plenty of space and dividers. Good price too, very happy with purchase!
Absolutely agree about husky jerk. What a thrill when they slam it on a pause! By far my favourite pike lure. I fish usually size 14. Great video!
Thanks for watching man 👊

I was fish for fish against my dad he all daredevils and I used silver minnow like my grandpa did with the uncle Josh pork trailer.

Great video, I personally have had a lot of success with rapala floating lures while fishing for pike. Gold or yellow seems to work well. Insta sub btw!
I've been hammering pike on a purple/chartreuse lipless crankbait
spoons and Kastmasters are SO versatile
I caught a 25 inch yesterday on a clack’n crayfish. Northwest Montana
Red devil spoons.. Rapalas.. Rattle traps.. Perch color plugs.. Sucker live bait.
How about a hear jig good white or yellow sartorius just wondering because it gets used by people in New Mexico.
Good lures ill have too try these
Top 3 for me would be spoons, spinnerbaits, and dead baits.
Rear hook keep getting wrap around lure but the bass was non stop fighting over it I even hooked 2 on one lure never seen that before get product
Loved this video it's really well done! You've got my sub 😁
Thanks dude!
little cleo’s are also very good spoons, silver and blue works best in my area
also gotta have a rapala j-13 and a f-18
1/2 oz white spinner bait! With a single Colorado blade. Bass and pike slayer!
Great video thank you
You can catch them in the winter on whopper ploppers too. Big ones
Guess i need to grab a buck tail mepps now too 😆
Would you recommend that I use a dressed or plain #5 Mepps Aglia? I’m looking to catch all sizes of pike from hammer handles to trophies
Husky jerk 14 in fire tiger and Mepps cyclops spoons have been pike candy for me
My best pike was on tail spinner
Pike will hit darn near any type of lure that you throw at it. I grew up in upstate NY fishing for them and speak from experience. Top 5 blah, throw the cheapest lure at them because they're going to destroy it physically after time. The mepps black fury and comets have always produced for me. I saw some fools throw custom swim baits, glides, and depps and chuckled knowing those lures are trashed after a few fish.
I totally agree all you need is a big jig head with a big fat head minnow works every time or maybe a cheap spinner with minnow
Are the lakes in the video abanakee lake? Looks like abanakee to me
Thanks for the info man! Nice content, liked & subbed
👊
I love to use the Red devil
...not trying to catch pike here in mid-MI but in last 2 yrs I've caught 3. one was a 11" baby. All 3 were caught on a 10" black and blue w/a chartreuse tip plastic worm.
I've never watched a top 5 pike lure video without any softbaits on it.
Sliver rattle wraps are good
Eppinger Red & White Dardevle 1.5 oz nickel is my "stranded on a desert island" lure. I've caught just about every freshwater species on it: largemouth, walleye, Northerns, and even perch! Make sure you use the real Eppingers and not cheap imitations -- they don't have the same action. They can be cast, trolled, and even jigged.
Bluefox mepp # 5 or six with a twin tail grubb on treble hook catches anything. Black swick and Williams warblers.
If I don't have the bluefox on I feel like I'm wasting my time.
Great tips What kinda line set up do you like to use ?
My go too is a spinner bait
Canadian Wiggler, floater or sinker?
I've caught a lot of pike on crankbaits specifically ones that rattle really loud
What is the best depth for mid summer pike fishing in ontario??
Same on 5
Red devils never let me down. Caught more weeds than pike though lol.
