    After watching a few videos on this topic, I have to say this is by far the best! the still shots are much more helpful than a shaky video.

    You get an "A" from this old tech teacher. The Subaru manual says to let the silicone cure for 6-8 hours before starting the engine.

    Great video, thank you. As a few have mentioned, it’s important to install RTV on the “head” side of gasket, in those 4 locations, it’s required to seal up the corners where there is another joint. Subaru dealership tech said they use Toyota RTV because it dries fast and allows them to run motor right away, it’s expensive so I used Permatex “the right stuff” which dries quickly also and I’m sure is more than adequate

    Great detailed video, thanks for posting. One thing though that needs to be cleared up. The rubber RTV needs to be applied between the rocker cover gasket and the cylinder head. it should not be put in the slot on the rocker cover where the gasket goes in. this is used to seal the transitions for the gasket to the cylinder head where it make sharper corners to assist the oil seal.

    • @nappyjim
      @nappyjim  3 роки тому +3

      Im confused. So are you saying @10:29 which is straight from the subaru manual, they have you putting it in the slot. Are you saying it shouldent be put in the slot?

    • @treklawler6255
      @treklawler6255 3 роки тому +6

      @@nappyjim correct. the sealer goes on the head where the rubber gasket meets it. you even show it in the video where it was on the head from the factory. if you look at the manual you will also see where they instruct you to remove the old material with a scraper. the picture you show from the manual where to apply the sealant is to be applied to the gasket once it is installed in the rocker cover. in most cases it is applied to the head and then the rocker cover with the gasket is put on it so it will fill any voids where the angles are.

    Great how to video. Clear photos, great explanation, and no distracting music. But I do agree with previous comment of where the silicone should be applied. It should be put on the head at the seems. That is why the gasket was stuck to the head when you removed the cover.

    I just did this job at 116,000 miles for my moms 2015 Outback. She never serviced it at 60k miles. It had 300, 302 misfire. Took me about 14 hours to do both valve cover gaskets and plugs. My back hurts so bad I need drugs. Seriously, this is too much labor to change 4 plugs. I can do the same job on my 1995 Prelude in under a hour. Subaru isn't a Porsche but the Outback cost the same as a Cayman to service. Now I got to replace the fuel filter. I did use antiseize on my new plugs and it did help installing them. Made it easier to install them by hand and twist them.

    hey man I know it's an old vid, but when I changed my plugs this past weekend they had oil on them. I didn't lift up the engine and it took me 2 hours to try and get the right socket combos to get the plugs out. Would pulling off the whole cover make it easier to get to the plugs? Or should I expect an even longer process than last time? Tight schedule so I'm just trying to figure out how much time I need to change my gaskets

      2016 Outback 2.5, 130k miles...same plug change revealed oil in the plug tubes. Drivers side change out requires removal of the battery, battery tray, and tray mount to get the extra clearance and room to work. 6-14mm bolts(steel mount), 2-10mm long bolts(battery hold down), 10mm battery post nuts. I also found access to the lower half was so much easier with the undercarriage splash guard removed. 3-12mm bolts and 11 large plastic body panel retainers, and 6 small ones(3 on each wheel well) I'd recommend marking the holes where pulled them prior to removal with paint pen so you can find them easily during re-install. You'll be glad you had the extra room, especially when cleaning off all the left over gasket from the case.

    Were the valve/rocker cover gaskets bad too or just the tube seals? I've got oil in the wells on my coils as well, but wondering if the tube seals can be changed alone so solve the problem without pulling the valve covers.

    • @haywardkong1213

      you have to pull the rocker covers off to get the tube seals. So at that point you would have to replace the Rocker cover seals too as well as the tube seals.

    I was looking for the 2014 Outback valve cover replacement. Yours came up. On the 14' you have to lift the engine up. Do you have to lift the engine up to get at the cover on the 15'? I know it is a different body but this is much different. Thanks

      You don't need to left of the engine for FB25, FB20, or FA20 according to MrSubaru1387 for changing spark plugs. I think for the BRZ you'll have to do do a slight lift. Yes Having various sizes of extensions helps a lot I had to special order 1 inch extensions from Tekton which helps get into the tight areas.
