  • Honda CBX Cylinder Head Disassembly - Found More Problems! I have finally made some time to work on the CBX restoration and continue with full engine disassembly after a long break. In this video I disassemble the cylinder head and address more issue with it. I remove a broken cam cap retainer bolt, find an issue with an exhaust guide, form plans for stripped threads, and file some damaged spots near the spring buckets. Next up is getting the engine components over to be vapor blasted before reassembly.
Previous episode with repairing the cylinders:
    • Honda CBX Cylinder Rep...

Fixing old stuff is what 'sustainability' is all about.
Bought my Honda 305 Dream at a JY for $150, spent a few hundred cleaning it up, was my daily rider/commuter for four years, still use it to run errands -- too much fun! Old Hondas are forever bikes.

Hi and thanks for your videos and excellent standard of workmanship. Just a tip with that broken bolt: i would have put a close fitting drill down through the dowel to get a good centre mark to then drill for the easy out; because, as you would know, getting the drill hole central is imperative, especially if it comes to drilling the bolt out completely. :) cheers, Neil

Evening Buddy. That was really interesting and fantastic getting that snapped bolt out 👍🏻 I’m
now 66 and was brought up in the 70s on Honda CB motorcycles stating with a club 50 then a CB 175 electric start lol 😆 Then a CB 250 super dream old and new then a CB 650 tourer. Then a couple of K Hondas 550/ 750. And a few others. I then got a Honda super bike the VF 750 and came off at 110 mph. I’ve never been on a bike since but I do like watching guys like you restore the old Hondas that I loved 😍 I can remember dreaming about the CBX in the showrooms along with the Suzuki 750 kettles lol 😆 I had lots of other bikes from the era like KH Kawasakis Yamahas ect. but Hondas was my favourite by far. You are doing a great job and great videos! For broken studs or screws I love left hand drill bits. It doesn't change anything from your method EXCEPT very often the broken part start getting out BEFORE you end the drilling. Even if it doesn't... it makes nothing different. And as I got a small lathe, I can make a custom drilling guide every time I need ... and it makes the drilling much easier!

Hi, great series, looking forward to the next episode.
A tip for marking the centres of the bolts where you have a guide dowel or a deep recess.
Use a transfer punch, a properly hardened one unfortunately not HF as they are to soft, sized for the inside of the dowel and get some left handed carbide spade bits.
Experience has shown me that sometimes you need to heat the immediate area with a small tipped oxy/acetylene torch to get as small a heat spot as possible so you don’t anneal the aluminium in the area to much.
Keeping the wood and self tapping screw count to a minimum is always a challenge.
    Take care.

The more I practise, the luckier I get. That's as true for BHB as for anyone. A mistake lots of people make with screw extractors is to drill too big a hole in the broken bolt, assuming that a bigger extractor is bound to be better. But the bigger the hole, the less material is left and the broken bolt can be expanded by it to grip tighter. Still, I would have used heat too to be on the safe side. I've only broken one extractor - the first time I tried to do the job - and the pain of rectification means I go really really careful with them now and use them as the second to last resort. The last resort is to drill right out and retap for a a helicoil or timesert. I've given up with extractors when there's no sign of movement and a risk of snapping them to move on to that last resort.

Even though I understand you're busy, it's a shame this was the last CBX video a year ago now.
I have never seen an engine rebuild, but always been curious. Seeing this engine get the treatment you have given it, is an eye-opener. Have watched every CBX video in order that you have made. That sort of says something, that I am genuinely gripped by this.
FWIW I thought you would have done an engine rebuild on the CB750. Just for love and to make sure it's tuned 100%.
I'm kind of partial to the Kawasaki GT 750. They were built about 1980 - 1990, but almost all of the examples we see now are rough.
However I saw a vid of a mint GT 550, that was for sale. ua-cam.com/video/N0IVDwiAdFE/v-deo.html
Also someone riding and showing a nice loved one. ua-cam.com/video/GZ7Cx3fy2G8/v-deo.html

It is a shame its been a year. That was never the plan but I have not had the ability to see it through yet with all I have going on. For the CB750 it runs like a top with 165 PSI compression on all 4 cylinders, no oil usage, and clean oil filters so honestly no need. I also don't want to rebuild it as that means the bike would be off the road for a long time as evidence by this CBX rebuild lol

    • @greenbow7888
      @greenbow7888 Рік тому +1

@@BrickHouseBuilds I remember in the CB750 hour long video that you said there was very low mileage on it. hence no need for an engine rebuild.
I don't have even 1% of the bike knowledge that you do, so I was not being contradictory to you.
More just watching for fun coz I love bikes. Like I am not specifically a fan of the CBX, but due to loving bikes, it's impossible to pass that video. The engine strip down was brilliant.
What's also cool is your appreciation of older bikes. Quite a few new bikes leave me cold, especially the ones without a proper pillion seat. Something that older bikes never got wrong. Many new bike pillion seats make me annoyed that they designed them looking uncomfortable. Whereas your Bandit seat is what bike seats should be like. Eyewatering bike.
Anyway, best of luck. Your Bandit is incredible. If I were a jealous type person, I would for sure be envious of that. As I am not a jealous person, it's nice just to know it exists and is in great hands. (Nice to have seen it.) The chromed side panels that you painted black, look excellent.

Shocked by how bad overall this engine is.. it must have smoked more than my bro.. with his cigars billowing out smoke.. cough cough splutter ... 👀😀those valve seats ???? WT?! 😗Good to see the valve compression tool you made up.. for newbies/novices.. bought tools can be mega expensive.. patent tools MAJOR expensive..
