Demons souls has by far my favourite lore in the game, a great balance even between Eldrich monsters, commentary on human nature and the morality of life.
"You must not let trifling matters sway you" Ah yes. It's almost as if the very FABRIC of the world is being destroyed by the fog. But tis a trifling matter.
Thank you for the credit mention and the video. Honestly the ending of this game is what makes this my favorite Souls game, as your efforts are not in fact in vain and you can actually save this world, unlike in Dark Souls or Bloodborne where the endings are more ambiguous or the dark fate is inevitable and can only be postponed. Though that being said Artorais is still my favorite character in the franchise.
Of course! Thank you for sharing that knowledge drop before. :) Artorias is fantastic, especially with the mix between the legend and discovering the reality.
Man I love this game. Loved it in 2009, love it just as much now with all the improvements and trimmings. Great video! Please post more about Demon’s Souls.
@@DaveControlLive I have a question regarding the representation of God in this game. Remember on PS3, how the Flithy Woman made mention of Maiden Astraea, and how the men idolize her as The Virgin Mary? Do you think that was added in (PS3 version) as a translation ad lib? Because in the remake that was removed, and to the best of my knowledge there really isn’t any mention of Christianity that I can recall off the top of my head? Even with the Archstones, the spheres look more like arch demons souls (Maiden Astraea boss fight, how she’s holding one) than say the Globus Cruciger? I always wanted to ask someone if that was intentional or if someone translating the script added it because the original source material didn’t have a 1 to 1 Japanese to English translation?
Well, that was perfect timing, I finished my first play through of demons souls at pretty much the exact same time this was posted. Thanks Dave for another great (and thorough) video
It's always exciting to see another of these videos go up, because they never fail to really get me thinking Right now, what you said about the Monumentals using Soul Arts to become these semi-immortal beings was really sticking with me, so something that struck me was the line from the Monumental at 24:24, "Man's memory of history is ever-shortening, and before long, he repeated his mistakes. The Monumentals perished, and the Archstones were forgotten" It's really interesting to me that it was said in this way, like humanity forgetting and the Monumentals dying were connected. Could that imply that the Monumentals and their mission to watch over the Old One used to be kept alive by humans in a way that they now are not? Like by using the Soul Arts and/or the Maiden's abilities to take souls from people to extend their own lives?? If so, this could be another reason for the Archstones and their teleportation power. So that willing worshippers, or maybe even unwilling sacrifices, could be sent to the Nexus by the various leaders they gave them to If that's the case, maybe the Crestfallen Warrior wasn't too far off. If the last Monumental's life depends on being given souls, but the people have all forgotten why they should, what better way to convince them than to make them afraid of the Old One again? Find a sucker like Allant who's strong enough and destructive enough to want to wake the Old One, let the demons cause some chaos, then find a heroic sucker to lull the Old One back to sleep. All you'd have to do is betray everything you're supposed to stand for, and hey, the Maiden might even go along with it knowingly if you tell her, "Help me and this time I'll let you sleep too and finally be free of your prison" (or I guess in a slightly less sinister interpretation, the Monumental tried to recruit Allant to start offering souls to keep the last of them alive by telling him about the old one and its history, not expecting him to wake it up, and then had to switch to plan b when he did)
Just to help wit ur nexus theory. If u notice in that picture of the pillar building hovering above the old one....it looks like it’s hovering upside down. When u are in the nexus if u look up there’s a giant statue of a woman upside down as well.
Thanks to amazing people like you Dave, I can experience these rich universes even when they are platform restricted :< Thanks a ton, and merry christmas, sir! :)
Just discovered your channel. Wow is all I can say. Demon's Souls is my favorite game of all time starting with ps3 as I lost many hours of sleep do to that game. Thanks for the great informative videos. Look forward to the rest. A+ content. Subbed!
It sounds like they never lulled the old one to sleep during the first scourge. It sounds like they just survived it by playing dead. Like how some rodents do for cats. The humans prohibited soul arts and bound The Maiden in Black, the strongest demon. If the Maiden was the last demon, then they, the Maiden and the Old One, must've been soul starved which could've lead to the old one going into a hibernation until the food, souls, come back. It was only during the events of the game do we actually forcefully lull it to sleep with the Maiden's soul sucking ability which would also put her to sleep since demons need the old one awake to function. This could explain why soul arts still existed after the first scourge but not the second one. As well as bring more hope into the good ending since without soul arts, we can never wake the old one again, and even if we do, we'll have the Maiden there to instantly lull it back to sleep. I'm curious why the 2 strongest demons we see are actually both maidens, Astrea and The Maiden in Black. I wonder if there is actually a correlation there.
Very well compiled! Compared to Dark Souls and Bloodborne and even Sekiro, there is very little lore for Demons Souls on UA-cam. I'll recommend this video to anyone picking up the remake. Personally though, Im just now playing through the original PS3 Demons Souls. My fiance got it for me as an early Christmas present! ❤
The fact that I knew and understood all this information already just shows how good they were at storytelling in this game. The Dark Souls series had me needing to watch lore videos but this one taught me nothing new, which is a compliment to both you and the writers for the game.
The more I watch this video, the more I draw parallels to the lore of Elden Ring. It's insane how much FromSoft connects unrelated games through lore ideas.
Awesone to see you doing some more Souls content, your vids are always of high quality. I will be binge watching these later now that I finally got a PS5 a few days ago and just beat the game earlier today but I have no doubt Jared has already beaten me to it. This was the only one in Soulsborne that I've never played and loved almost everything about it, the main issue I have is having to use fast travel to get to different regions, I vastly prefer DS1's implementation, the other issue is weapons not having their own techniques like in later Souls games.
20:30 : There is good reasons in the game to believe that the Old One is the God that created the world, now deprived from it's soul by the soulsucking art and the Maiden. It create demons and request for souls in an attempt to regain it's own soul dispersed. Should you reunite the Old one and the Maiden, his soul re completed, it disappear and become once more God. Should you kill the maiden and take the souls accumulated, depriving the Old One once more, it extend it's fog further in an attempt to get more souls.
Believe what you want but I think it’s much more likely that the maiden in black was the result of a spell. If I had to make a wild guess I would say the monumentals probably fused a colorless demon souls to a maiden. It simultaneously created the nexus as a prison/receptacle for her purpose. Her chains were probably put on her to restrain her movements during the casting.
I think the implication is you become a demon the moment you get a demon's soul with the ending being if you give into greed or become a monumental to maintain the world from that point on. The maiden saying new demon is merely you haven't been a demon long, even Allant considers you a demon after the false king fight.
If the soul brings clarity, is the candle wax that blinds the Maiden in Black representative that the Monumentals clouded that clarity and gave birth to her candle maiden persona whose purpose is to return the old one to slumber instead of her true self which was a deadly demon? That would be really cool
I'd love to have some sort of video explaining the Unknown Egress. It has an archstone shard, implying that the Monumentals know about it. And the structure itself also seems incredibly old. There's pillars on both sides of the Dragon God, and yet they look ancient. Speaking of, why is the Dragon God there in the first place? The environment really doesn't look like Stonefang. Sure there's volcanos around, giving it a lava appearance, but the Dragon God archstone is incredibly far underground in the mountains. It makes you wonder where it could be placed in Boletaria, and also what it's purpose is. And with both the Dragon God and the Vanguard being placed on the path that entering travelers would take into the fog, it could easily lead you to the explanation that it's a trap set by the monumentals to trap demon slayers in the nexus. Would love to see a proper explanation, as my head cannon has loads of holes
I'll have to re-explore the environment the Dragon God is found in Stonefang a little bit, but there is an interesting statue in the Unknown Egress of what looks like some sort of King. If that's found anywhere else in the game, that might be some sort of strong link/clue. Otherwise - there were bones of the Dragon God which the demon took over to form the Dragon God - so maybe similar to the Vanguard Demon, there were actually 2.
@@DaveControlLive Oh that's a fantastic point, I hadn't even thought of that. The only issue there, is that the Vanguard is a greater demon, not an Archdemon like Dragon God. But, maybe it is possible to have duplicate archdemons. Who knows
I don't know what the original translation in Japanese was, but,1) the souls arts being lost, 2) knowledge of the soul art is lost, 3) the souls being banned, these three things don't have to be mutually exclusive they could be one in the same. to ban something is to prohibit it's use, and if the soul grants clarity and the souls are manipulate the soul, is it not outside the realm of possibility that the monumentals striped the knowledge of the soul arts from man, meaning it would be prohibited, and lost. Edit: the more I think about the more I think Dark Souls is a direct sequel to Demon's Souls
Amazing video Dave! I still don't quite understand the demon surges... Were they the effect of awakening the Old One or are they unrelated? My confusion comes mainly from the intro saying there was a scurge of demons and then the awakening... spawned powerfull demons... Is there a source of demons both in Boletaria (The Old One) and in the outside world?
So one thing that still confused me is this, if the arch stones are the only remaining areas of the world not consumed by the colorless fog and destroyed during the multiple scourges, what “world” did Vallerfax tell of boletarias plight if there’s not really much of a world left?
I don’t think fromsoft does much without intentions behind it. That said I think there’s a reason crestfallen said what he did....because it’s true. If only there were more to that story to find out...I wonder if there is
I've never played Demon Souls, and I've only ever played Dark Souls but some things in the Demon Soul's lore and Dark Souls make me think there may be some credence to theory that Demon Souls and Dark Souls may take place on the same world just that the events of Demon Souls happened several Millennia ago, or enough time for any traces of past civilizations to fade away entirely...
Now a theme that I don't think any time is spent on. If demon alant and true Alant have both halves of soul/demonbrant...It could just be symbolism of the separation of self. Granted there is ALSO the symbolism between the two pretty much being charity vs selfishness and the joined blade being the alleged manifestation of a theoretical balanced state of clarity. Thus he had it combined until finally confronted by the old one and the demon him...left with demonbrant.
I wonder, did God create the Old One or did man create the Old One? I almost feel like the Old One was designed to enhance the soul arts that united the world; maybe designed around the idea of Primeval Demons and how they work. A lust for power to enhance the soul arts becomes man's undoing when the Old One starts devouring souls and changing reality.
imo God created the old one. my understanding is that God granted man, soul, and as the intro states, it in turn gave man clarity. what this means imo is that it gave man the ability to harness the soul to its fullest potential. Man then began lusting for power. Yuria says “if there is a god, he gave us souls to do good, not practice witchcraft” those are curious words, makes me believe that the art of sorcery and witchcraft alike, have long forgotten to be considered taboo. it was the society of the monumentals who discovered, worshipped and eventually awakened the old one, by practicing sorcery, directly causing the first scourge. mans insatiable lust for power is not what god had intended, and so it was met with a being who had an unquenchable hunger for souls. i believe the old one is gods do over. that once the fog completely takes over, the universe fades to dark and god can start over. like creating the dark souls universe. this means, that i believe the true canon ending of Demon’s Souls is the bad ending. this allows the old one to wake up, spread his fog and fade everything away. learning from his mistake, god introduces humanity*. now, humanity* or the lack of it is what causes man to go insane rather than the lack of souls. and as we know from dark souls 1’s intro cut scene “in the age of ancients, the world was unformed, shrouded by fog... a land of grey crags, archtrees, and everlasting dragons” fire was introduced in this dark fog, and with it came souls of lords. perhaps this fire was that of the maiden in black, for it granted man the souls of lords past, perhaps even, the very souls of those she’s tended

What a way to start the week! Great video! This was a thorough covering of the lore, paired quite nicely with the superb editing and King's Field Music. Its quite interesting seeing how the story has been fleshed together more with time. The scale of the timeline might not come close to DS, but its so interesting seeing how things were forgotten or passed to myth within the shorter period.

Trying to find the lost jaw breaker
What a way to start the week! Great video! This was a thorough covering of the lore, paired quite nicely with the superb editing and King's Field Music.
Its quite interesting seeing how the story has been fleshed together more with time. The scale of the timeline might not come close to DS, but its so interesting seeing how things were forgotten or passed to myth within the shorter period.
