      @Musicians Paradise It definitely will! Im thinking that I want to do it before I go on a trip, as I’ll be taking my MPC Live with me. I’ve already made multi sampled keygroups of my ESQ-1, DSS-1, and Yamaha EX-5, as well as drum programs of my various drum machines. RX-5 (my favorite) included. If I’m able to successfully multi sample a good electric guitar, it’ll be like having my entire studio in one box! I think I’ll record my Fender Jazzmaster through a 5 watt Champ, recorded with a 57 and good room mic. If only there was such a thing as auto sampling non midi instruments!
      BTW I use your Rogue and RX-7 samples all the time. I’m pretty excited to check out this new keygroup. Seriously, you provide an amazing service to the production community and I very much respect your dedication. Do you have a patreon?

    Sorry for flooding you with questions, but you seem to be expert on MPC keygroups:
    1. Is there a way to merge multiple keygroups? I've sampled mono synth with different settings, and would like to make it velocity switch. I would also like to make layered instruments this way
    2. Is there a way to do round-robins with velocity switching? It seems as if they're mutually exclusive, i.e. 4 round-robins across single velocity layer or 4 velocity layers with single round-robin layer. There is a work-around by adding more key-ranges on same key, but velocity start and end don't work in cycle or rnd mode.

    • @MusicianParadise
      @MusicianParadise  2 роки тому

      1.Yes, but you will have to assign the samples manually to the sample layers, and it will may take a lot of time
      2.No, at least to my knowledge.

      You can map attack or cutoff to q-link, BUT ONLY FOR SINGLE KEYGROUP. So if you want to play with cutoff, you can't, it would work only if you have single keyrange in the program. Pretty embarasing, for the creators of S5000 I would say

      Yes, I think AKAI will implement at list note recognition one day. But recently I found even better solution - inexpensive Preset Maker software for converting .wav and .aiff multisamples into MPC's sampler format. It greatly simplifies the whole process, including note recognition!

  • @juliansimmons7700
    @juliansimmons7700 Рік тому

    On a technical 'note', if sampling directly into the MPC ONE/LIVE the sample rate is 44.1kHz
    and all official sample packs contain 44.1kHz samples. Supposedly the MPC is locked to 44.1kHz ? (maybe due to it's DACs).
    You recorded at 48kHz, does the MPC then need to carry out resampling?
    When I save a project in the MPC and your waves also saved/duplicated in the project, they are still 48kHz.
    I can also export a wave of the program to SD card as a 44.1kHz, 48khz or 96kHz wave file, I presume these are upsampled from 44.1kHz. But in the case of your 48kHz files, if I save a wave file of a program to SD at 48kHz I assume no conversion has taken place, leading me to think the MPC can internally process 48kHz and 96kHz files, and it doesn't reduce everything to 44.1kHz.
    Looking online it seems a lot of people are asking this same question - as Akai aren't giving any info on it. What happens to a sample loaded into the MPC at 48kHz, is it internally processed at 48kHz? or is it resampled down to 44.1kHz - as small jumps in resampling are never a good idea i.e. from 48 to 44.1kHz. Then when exporting a program at 48kHz, is it then resampled back up to 48kHz - that's a lot of resampling and quality loss, down then up again for no reason.

    • @MusicianParadise
      @MusicianParadise  Рік тому

      Well, this is one very good question - I was surprised my 48Kz files worked in my MPC Live straight away. MPC internal clock fixed at 44.1Kz. How it deals with 48Kz files? No idea...I'll do some tests - maybe MPC reading those files as 44.1Kz at expense of pitch?
      I had to re-tune my keygroup to A=440 because the square piano I sampled was tuned at A=420, but probably I compensated for a sample rate without even noticing that?

    • @MusicianParadise

      I did some tests today - I loaded the same sound as a 44.1Hz sample and as sample and 48Kz sample into the drum program. No noticeable difference are audible on playback, but as I found out in the MPC sample editor, 48Hz sample was pitched up automatically by 0,13 cents, which seems very interesting to me. I don't have the expertise to make a valid conclusion, but it seems MPC reading 48Hz samples by clocking those at 44.1 and auto compensating by retuning the sample to match a correct pitch!

      @@MusicianParadise ok, I think the MPC is holding the 48kHz sample within it's memory as 48kHz, and will then save it as such, again, 48kHz, in a saved project.
      As there's more samples per second in 48 than 44.1, if it were to play that at the 44.1 rate the pitch would drop. So it's playing them faster, actually 1.088435 x faster, which is basically resampling on the fly. The issue is, this must result in some interpolation quality reduction, though maybe not much.
      On the whole it might be best converting to 44.1 (with a good re-sampler, r8brain or iZotope) before loading into the MPC, though that's aiming for perfection which is not really the point of the exercise? ;-) I know guys who record at 88.2 then resample down to 44.1 for CD as that's a pure 2x reduction in sample rate, clean. Actually I've done this, so I'm one of them.
      BTW I'm now interested in that Neumann mic you have - and just to say your square piano - on the MPC - is REAL!!!

      @@juliansimmons7700 Yes, really good points taking here, definitely, recording at 88.2 and downsampling to 44.1 for MPC seems like a very good advice, I'll try to do that in my future projects! The mic I'm using is Neumann TLM 102

    great job, but there is a mistake when you set up the velocity ranges: if your first range is 0 - 40, than the second range should start at 41, otherwise if you press a key at 40 velocity value, you're going to hear two samples at the same time

      Copy folder with the files on SD card and insert it into MPC. Open some project. Go to the browser and navigate to the SD card and to the folder with the files. Make sure drum/keygroup tab is selected (four squares) under "Search directory" title. Now you can see my keygroup. Tap on the keygroup and hit load. Go to the main screen. On the track tap the keygroup shortcut (small keyboard). Keygroup must appears below, under "keygroup program" Hit bank C - now you can play the keygroup on pads. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

    is it still this cumbersome to make an instrument on the MPC? I mean, isn't THIS what Akai should focus on making a very easy operation on the MPC? Regards

      Well, it's not as bad as it may seem from this quite old video. Since then, I have learned a few things:
      1. Sampling acoustic instruments is most difficult, and MPC is not tailored for this job. You'll need a good microphone, preamp, audio interface, and most of the work is done in the DAW.
      2. There is additional software, such as "Preset Maker," which was not available at the time I made this video. The "Preset Maker" can take all of the tedious work shown in the video away, automatically renaming and converting the audio files into MPC .xpm format.
      3. I had extremely good and fast results using MPC's built-in autosampler, which is a joy to work with. It automatically samples the synths that have CV or MIDI with no additional hardware or software needed- this is clearly the thing AKAI was focused on.
      The more I do of sampled instruments, the more I learn about how certain workflows and tedious tasks can be optimized and automated. I recognize a big difference between how professionals approach this kind of work and someone like me - I'm basically documenting my learning process!

      @@MusicianParadise Just wanted to add that it would be super interesting to see something where you use this Preset Maker with the MPC. Making your own instruments for sure but mostly making your own version of existing Kontakt libraries etc, its so convinient to not have to use the computer and have a standalone version of our libraries. Even if they are more light and simple. Just a suggestion for content. Cheers :)

      Well, at least AKAI added a tuner to the MPC lineup! Setting the tuner to "resample" mode will provide you with the note name, MIDI note number, and fine tune deviation from the 12 tet temperament tuning. It would be very nice to be able to automatically rename and tune the samples using the information gathered by the MPC tuner!
