- The Wall by Pink Floyd is one of the most successful concept albums ever recorded yet it came at the terrible price of tearing the band apart. On today’s episode, we begin our three part series on how Pink Floyd made The Wall with part one, the making of the record.

There was so much to talk about the making of The Wall that it made the most sense to break up the video into three parts, with each focusing on a different aspect of the project. I start this week with the making of the album. Look for parts two and three, the making of the tour and the film, coming soon. Thanks for watching!
These Pink Floyd Videos are Great. Hope for more about the Tour as well as The Movie version that scared the pants off as a kid. I love it though. Also, Hope for a History of The Residents and Gorillaz.
I'm glad that you decided to break this up, and I'm looking forward to part 2. This is a fascinating story, and you obviously did your research. Excellent use of visuals and video clips as well.
this is good stuff. would love to see more in-depth looks at albums like this

Okay, did you actually read Comfortably Numb (Vernon's book)? Because it clearly states that Rick did record parts with James Guthrie during the evenings at Super Bear, by Guthrie's own admission. Despite the interpersonal issues, Rick did play on nearly every track of the album. This is one of the myths which continues to be perpetuated regarding the album due to commentary from people who weren't even present at the sessions.
nick mason was just chillin when all the drama was going down

I always think that Nick is the nicest guy in Rock history.
So, he was basically the Ringo?

David James Respect the performer and you wont have this problem.
@@nickmaloney2824 I've no idea how you come to that conclusion, but maybe I should 'respect' my neighbours cat so that it's nightly screeches will cease to be a problem.
@@nickmaloney2824 good grief no, buy what's wrong with that? Waters is a great musician but sometimes a loser, like when he spat on members of the audience, he was often whinging about his fans, sometimes for no reason other than cheering, most artists can handle they are not God, waters is just a dick at times, he's not someone I would automatically give respect to just because he is a 'performer'.
I´d be on Waters side if you were just screaming at the stage.
nick mason is me avoiding drama

When Pink Floyd were recording The Wall, they actually built a wall around the studio they were in. Brick by brick, they became surrounded by this concrete construction.
And by the time they'd finished the album, they found themselves trapped in the studio and couldn't get out. 22 people died when Roger ordered them to fling themselves
against the wall, in a desperate attempt to make a crack in it and create an opening. All to no avail, of course.
The band only got out because Richard Wright was told he'd be fired from the band after the next tour, and he got so pissed off that he simply pushed his piano through it and went home.
What are the 22 people who died while making The Wall?
@@teddyfurstman1997 Jesus' 12 disciples, the 3 wise men of Christmas and Snow White's seven dwarfs.
@@SpaceCattttt That's not true. The seven dwarfs were contracted to Walt Disney - Snow White did not own or manage them at any time. They did die as you state, however. She was in the south of France at the time though. Coincidence?
@@stuartmiller7419 They were under contract to Disney, it's true. But Snow White and the dwarfs were also Freemasons who only signed on with Walt in order to
usurp the company from within. But they underestimated the power of the mouse house, and were forced to flee to the south of France, where they were
mercifully met and sheltered by Roman Polanski. Himself a naughty fiend on the run.
But while Mr. Polanski eventually moved on to the safe haven that Switzerland could provide him with, the dwarfs instead decided that it would be wiser to split up
in case the law came breathing down their necks. Which it did. The result being that Snow White was burned at the stake for cartoon witchcraft.
So the dwarfs contacted The Rescuers and were smuggled across the English channel on the wings of a small squadron of albatrosses.
And once in London, they spotted a newspaper ad asking for a school choir to sing backing vocals on a Pink Floyd track, which they immediately answered.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
@@SpaceCattttt To be fair, just because THEY say it's history is no real reason to believe them. We all know that the Freemasons determine what is written as history but that it rarely involves facts. Also, I think you'll find that the collective noun for albatrossesses is a rookery, not a squadron.
I had no idea that Richards life was so tragic
Roger certainly did not make it any less vexing.
YEAH, SAD SO SAD. TO HAVE PINK FLOYD-YOU NEED ROGER,DAVID,NICK & RICHARD!
Gavin Cox - Agree. Roger was a heartless egomaniac, very similar to the same attitude he bashes in Trump.
The irony though is that he ended up being the only Floyd member that actually made money from the tour since he participated as an employed musician while the rest of the band had to suffer the losses (the tour actually lost money due to the extremely costly production).
@@MLennholm unfortunately all that money ended up wasted in a Fail solo Album and a cocaine rehab. Eventually he agreed to return as a musician in a Momentary Lapse of Reason, found working without Waters was the therapy he needed and fully joined the band for The Division Bell, which IMO is a far better album than Momentary Lapse of Reason.
Snowy White was not a "roadie." He was second guitar for most of the seventies (including recording appearances on Animals).
You can hear Phil Lynott on Thin Lizzy album's call on Snowy White to play his riff.
_Pigs on the Wing_ was originally a single track with a soulful lead break that is quintessential Floyd. Snowy White was the guitarist recorded in that original version.
A balanced video, not just blaming Roger Waters for the de facto Floyd break up. Waters was undoubtedly a very demanding person who could be rather ruthless. But Rick Wright was a very troubled man, of his own making. His marriage was breaking down and according to different sources, he was nursing a rapidly escalating cocaine habit at the time. Not a good combination.
I think Roger had been down that path before with Syd, for one thing. He'd been in the situation, in his mind, of having to pull things together when someone was going off the rails.
For a second thing I don't think Richard's situation flew very well with Roger as a reason for non-contribution. Richard's marriage was breaking down, but Roger had been through the same thing only three years before. Richard was a troubled man, sure -- Roger no less so. Except for Nick they ALL seem like troubled men.
That said, Roger was entering a period of his life where he was at his least diplomatic. To put it gently.
@@brandonbutler7204 Yeah but Roger was being a total ass about it and Rick wasn't he just wasn't contributing too much
@@brandonbutler7204 good point. Roger had already been through a divorce and managed to pull through with arguably no dip in production or quality. But I'm sympathetic to Richard given his struggle with cocaine. It was just a bad situation all around. But I don't blame Roger for doing what had to be done.
Finally a video that talks about the spitting incident that USES the audio from it!
Ikr
Wright was also dealing with a fairly heavy coke habit at the time of The Wall sessions.
It's also worth noting that, according to a few sources, Gilmour could be just as "difficult" as Waters.
@@sumego4180 you're just butthurt about his politics oy vey.
@@sumego4180 Thank you for your opinion. You may sit down with the rest of the class now kiddo.

*Showy White wasn't a roadie. They brought him as a touring guitarist
Snowy White also played guitar for Thin Lizzy.

Came here to say this. An esteemed collaborator. Of course he also played on the wall tour. There is a great clip of him playing the “note” during Hey You in Roger’s recent tour footage of the wall. Great player who also contributed memorably on Rick Wright’s solo work.

Falling In Zero Gravity also thx for defending me my dude
I've been a Pink Floyd super fan for over 20 years. This is one of the absolute best documentaries I've ever seen. Super well done and more detailed than anything I've ever come across. Bravo!
Fireworks and spit would be a great name for a Pink Floyd cover band.
I love the "Pros and Cons of Hitchiking" in the background.
It's a good album
One of my all time favorites along with Amused To Death.
@witchjumper you have a great taste in music
A freaking masterpiece of an album
Bro you deserve more subs dude, keep up the grind!
As a Pink Floyd fan for over 40 years all I can say is what a fantastic video and can't wait for the next parts. The scope of the information you provided is incredible. To anyone who is new to the Floyd story these videos will be must see and to us old timers who lived it, icing on the cake! Thank you!
I always loved Richard's piano pieces. How can one not like 'The Great Gig In The Sky'? I had no idea that he didn't do well by himself but did better playing with others. (I knew Roger was a sort of pretentious prick genius, but didn't know he used poor Richard as a punching bag.) His classical background always shined through with a jazz influence (Scott Joplin was one of his favorites). RIP Richard.
And Richard’s work on the wall was great, the piano solo in the opening of the Thin Ice is heartbreaking. And not to mention Nobody Home
One of the first rock songs I can remember hearing was "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)". The solo is still one of my all-time favorites. Something that struck me about it recently is that it bears heavy influence from a guitarist I didn't know about until later, Danny Kirwan. Funny that he became one of my favorites before I noticed that.
Speaking of Danny, you should check out Fleetwood Mac's 1969 album, Then Play On, of which he wrote half. (the UK version, not the US versions. That version was re-released in 2013 on vinyl and CD)
What surprised me was that he played the gtr solo on a pre 1957 Les Paul, not on a Strat or a Tele.
Didn't see that coming...................
Every member of a band will tell you its like a marriage they spend more time together , than their own family . The artistic differences and fights in Kiss, the Rolling Stones , The Who ,Queen Deep Purple etc. The list goes on and on
"Artistic", Kiss? 🤣
I knew about Richard being cut and then being hired as a musician back, but never knew why! I've actually read Pink Floyd biographies and still didn't know some of the material in this video - great job, Eric!
I like the empathy of the text writer, who can get into any band member shoes and see the situation from their perspective. Good reporting skills!
Love this video! You clearly did your homework. I would consider myself a pretty big Floyd fan and I still learned so many new things. Can’t wait for the next part!
I think people don’t realize, part of the reason “Another Brick In The Wall Pt II” was such a big hit single is because it was DISCO rock, just like “Billie Jean.” Disco had its place at one time, top of the mountain for a little bit. It’s influence was more important than people realize.
Yes indeed The Stones, Kiss, and many others all made songs that were very much disco in that era .
I'm so glad, that you're doing so many videos on Pink Floyd's The Wall. It's one of my all-time favorite albums and The Wall film is one I've watched over and over.
This channel needs so much more attention than its getting. Really awesome videos!
I'm a subscriber from the beginning on. Makes me really proud how much this channel has developed since 🙂
You nailed the 1979 apartment theme guy. Good stuff.
what a coincidence just a week ago I decided to listen to The Wall in it's entirety after many years. can't wait for next parts
I found The Wall exactly one week ago today thanks to your awesome review, and now I’m enveloped in the story of how it was created, The Tour, and the film. I cannot WAIT to hear you cover the tour, the crazy props and inflatable puppets that were used are amazing to look at, if I’m honest. Will you talk about the 1990 Berlin Wall shows as well??
I’m not going to lie, you’re my favourite music UA-camr. You have something that other youtubers don’t; thank you for working so hard on these videos and I hope to see UA-cam become a great success for you in the future! You truly deserve it!
A friend of mine was at that infamous concert in Montreal. He said it was a zoo!
Ironic, since they were performing Animals at the time.
“The last time the four original members of Pink Floyd played together.” ... so... we’re just gonna forget about Syd Barrett?
David Gilmour joined when Syd was still in the band so he is considered an original member.
@@devinthierault David can not be both a an original member AND join the band when Syd was still i it. Syd is the original, David came in and eventually replaced Syd when Syd could no longer function as a guitarist. He would play a gig by just standing and maybe hit the guitar. Frustrated, the other 3 members just didnt pick up Syd for a gig, got David and rest is history.
To be fair when Syd Barrett left they became a very different band stylistically.
It's kind of like how people refer to the 'original' lineup of Fleetwood Mac when Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were two of several band members who were drafted in to continue the band after Peter Green got spiked with powerful hallucinogenic drugs at a party and became mentally ill.
It pisses me off when people forget about Syd. He gave the band it's iconic name for goodness sake, to name one of many things.
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967)
a Saucerful of Secrets (1968) (Featured On 2 Tracks)
You deserve much more subs. Can’t wait for part 2
It's too bad that they didn't put When The Tigers Broke Free on the album. That's an amazing song.
I've watched hundreds of hours of rock docs & interviews and I just have to tell you that was fantastic, especially the psychoanalysis of the Right/Waters relationship.
I always expect such a complex album to also have such a complex creation
If you have some Dire Straits in your collection, l’m sure your analysis would be super interesting:
I’d suggest either the debut album from 1978, or Making Movies from 1980.
Brothers In Arms from 1985 is maybe too identifiable… still great songs on it.
Mofi have re released the back catalogue and they are great!
‘Hope to get your analysis on Dire Straits sometime!
Until then, all the best to you.
The way you put these 3 videos together is absolutely brilliant. Your very succinct and well spoken words about the details of the current subject are extremely well put together.
Bravo, my friend. You truly did something very wonderful in more of a 3 part film rather than a “few vids”. That would be putting down your efforts.
Above all, it is very apparent that you are a very smart individual with the gift of the “it factor” when it comes to you being played back after being very well filmed in an environment you are clearly comfortable in.
Now take a bow please sir.

Mr. Geek you knocked it out of the park again.I've seen zillions of 'making of' docs but this is among the best.

Do more Videos on The Wall, Please! Love Pink Floyd!
Back when The Wall came out I loaned my three week old album to a friend. I thought it was awesome that the cover had no writing and was just a plain brick wall. So, when I got it back I saw that he put the clear sticker that came with album on the front cover. Well... I made him buy me another copy and told him he could keep the other. In the end he was a good friend. I still have the copy he bought, a little worse for wear but no sticker on the front.
I've got a copy with no sticker included. I'd always thought the sticker was on the outer plastic and not on the the actual cover itself. Was it just included inside the album on the original release?
I know later releases had the Pink Floyd The Wall logo stamped or stuck on the album cover or plastic wrap, but the first release included a clear adhesive sticker inside the album.
edit: just checked out my copy and you are right. The sticker has remains of the shrink wrap on the back. I must have cut the plastic around sticker and then kept it in the album sleeve. Hey, it was the 70s and spent a lot of time in an altered state of mind.... lol
It makes you really appreciate all that went into the making off The Wall with all the tirmoil brewing in the background.
As much as I love the album I must say that I absolutely adore the way it is in the movie, it flows beautifully and and is sonically more intense in my opinion
Damn... This is very well researched and delivered. Well done.
as a old dude that still loves his childhood music.....I respect and enjoy your shows @ Vinyl Rewind.
Another terrific video, eagerly anticipating the next two.
The film is one of my favourites of all time; even the menu of the DVD got me excited (the option names are all plays on Pink Floyd songs)
Great delivery. Very informative. Going to Pt. 2 right now!
out of an agonizing experience came so much advancement...Rogers moment of rage birthed a rare and beautiful beast
thanks for this series. it means alot to me as i am dealing with my own wall right now, making this album all the more powerful and relevant.
This is an amazing video, you just earned yourself a new subscriber! Can't wait for part 2 and 3
Thank you for all the work you put in this. The album deserves to be listened and experienced!
I agree with that part, Dave and Roger both knew, one is musical genius and the other lyrical, so bitterness as it may be, but you need to have both of their creative inputs to make great songs.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to do this! This is top content!
Just discovering your extremely well made and very engaging channel. Love how you presented the information and your personal input on some facts. You have made a fan of me, thank you.
Wow.. so much stuff I didn't know about PF and The Wall.. even though we did a local The Wall show back home where I come from in 1997. It was magical, not as good as the original, but for 18-19 year olds being allowed to perform the entire The Wall was a huge thing for us. My favourite Pink Floyd album of all time. Good times! Stoked about part 2 and 3 man! :D
Great insight about the Wall album. Lighten up people, this video is not about the history of Pink Floyd, it’s about The Wall album and the circumstances in making the album. Almost every fan knows that Syd was the original Floyd guitarist. Cheers!
I just listened to both LP`s beginning to end with some good Brandy and immediately arrived here. Love the content.
Thank you for revealing that this band wasn't just a music-making machine but, that it is four parts of a whole. Creativity, whilst under the gun of contracts with time limits, has got to be extremely difficult to master but, they did it very well!
Love these videos!
You should do something like this for Let it Be or Magical Mystery Tour, you really know how to make a tight, concise video about the story of albums and the process of making them
Great video! This is my favorite pink floyd album of all time and it's nice to hear the backstory.
i like the deep story telling on this channel its so dam good. 10/10

Definitely one of the greatest albums ever made - of ANY genre! Yeah, & I've STILL got my copy with the infamous 'missing song.' I love to fire up the old record player! Nothing like vinyl, man! Love it! Shine on, you crazy diamonds... tavi.
Gotta tell you the truth. I don't even like Pink Floyd but I'm watching because I know you will make it interesting to me. And you did! Love the channel -

And there's still 2 parts left.
Hey john squidward
The Wall may have had the most dramatic affect on me as a young man - only discovering Dylan was bigger than discovering Floyd - specifically The Wall - great video 🔥
Love the album man! Thanks for picking it! Can’t decide if this or Animals is my favorite album.
The wall is greater, but animals is better.
It’s like picking a favorite child for me which I can’t lol

Nice to see Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking, Wet Dreams and Gilmour's self titled album on the back shelf
Love the Pros and Cons album in the background. I purchased one of the original pressings at the time of release - unbarred. One of the few records I held onto.
I love the Pros and Cons LP in the back .. such a great complication of feelings
Love your content you edit so well!
I recognize that footage! It's from the Cleveland Municipal Stadium concert in 77!
Caught this channel by happenstance. I love the set. Great work on part one, I can't wait to dig into the next parts.
"The Wall" came out two weeks prior to another double LP which defined the 1980s, despite the fact both it and "London Calling" came out in 1979. They changed rock to the point neither act found themselves displaced by the forces they served to unleash.
Cool story on Pink Floyd , love seeing the vinyl lp's in the background , ( still have all mine ) , Shout out to the stereo equipment in the background , Realistic from the looks of it . Turntable same as mine ,got the bigger brothers on that receiver & speakers .
Amazing channel. Not really into music reviews, but all the aesthetic of the videos and your music tate & knowledge made my just suscribe.
This is phenomenally done. Good job!

OMG! I had no idea this was coming! Can't wait to watch the next two parts!
Great video, Vinyl Geek. So glad you were objective about the band's difficulties an splits and didn't take sides or ascribe fault or blame. Refreshing.
Well done video. I am a huge Floyd fan and read books on them yet you managed to tell me a few things I never knew. Fantastic!
Best ten minutes I had this week.
Snowy White was not a roadie for the band. He even contributed a guitar solo on the 8-track version of "Animals" on an outro on "Pigs on the Wing" I think it was.
*Hey VR,* these videos on The Wall have been great. I've actually never heard the album from start to finnish. Luckily enough I just snagged a copy of the recently Remastered edition on vinyl at my local record store for only £15. _Can't wait for part two._
2:17 also apparently they threw numerous bottles on stage
This was my first time watching Vinyl Rewind and I loved The Wall series. Great research, perfectly presented.
Great stuff. I used to read a lot about Floyd in college, but forgot a lot of it. This was a nice reminder and some good new stuff. Thanks.
Brilliant work, you took me right back on 1979/80, absolutely nailed the set!
