J.S.Bach/M.Dupré - SINFONIA from Cantata 29

  • In this video I play J.S. Bach's immortal Sinfonia from Cantata 29 (BWV 29) in the transcription of Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) played on my Hauptwerk organ. I have chosen to use the sample set of Caen, created by Sonus Paradisi.
    The Sinfonia is from the opening of Cantata #29 and is originally written for orchestra. It has also been transcribed for organ by Guilmant but the version by Marcel Dupré remains the most played organ arrangement. It is festive piece which leaves no room for pause for the performer. And I love it :-D

    What a lovely registration you've chosen. Often the Sinfonia is done with such bombast (Bombard?) that one misses all the subtlety. Not so in your performance. 🎶

      Thank you so much for commenting. I agree! I regard bombarde 16 and 32 to be the most effective when it's used for long sustained notes. Some organist use them in fast passages which really isn't to my taste. So, I use those deep reeds in the pedal where carefully.

    BRAVO! I love that arrangement and have wrestled with it more than once. And now I've heard it with Cavaillé-Coll sounds, as Dupré must have imagined it at St. Sulpice.

      It is a fantastic transcription by Dupré. I hope you’ll get to finalize it someday. It is uplifting!

      Dear Benjamin. Thank you for your comment. Yes Hauptwerk is indeed incredibly useful for us organist. I can really recommend you getting a practice organ. I should have bought that even earlier in my career!!

      Hi @@philipaggesen Sorry for taking long to answer. You are right, it is in major. What I meant to express is that not all pieces in minor are sad and in major are happy. Better example is ua-cam.com/video/9dJve17_uvE/v-deo.html which is in B minor yet almost ecstatically happy

    Phew. What a wonderful rendition of this well-known but not so easy piece! Really well played, especially in terms of articulation. The registration surpassed my expectations with the choice of Caen and your distinct use of the swell pedal. All changes are very smooth and sound logical. Really very high quality, Philip. Bravo! 👍👍👍

    I'm torn between which transcription is better. How did you chose Dupre? Do you also play the Guilmant? I want to learn it (someday) but which one to learn is a difficult choice!)

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  6 місяців тому

      I would definitely go with the Dupré one because it feels "lighter" to my eye. Guilmant is more heavy and perhaps not an agile a transcription. But again. They are also very alike!

      Hey Joshy. Are you thinking of the colors of the keys 🎹? I actually don’t pay attention to how the look but only how it feels when playing. Thanks for reaching out!
