Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said: "Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I don't think that is true, I had Rush albums and did not have to conceal them, as did many people I know. Back in the 70s people who liked rock freely liked Rush, there was no hiding, and they certainly did fit the mold because back then there was no mold, with so many diverse groups appearing. There were also many "complicated" groups around, e.g. Yes, who were really 'far fetched' and technically brilliant, as well as uplifting. I remember at a rock nightclub I used to frequent, one night they played 2112, which excited a lot of people, and we got up on the dance floor. Rush were part of the mainstream rock scene back in the day, the same as any other group.
Sadly many of the kids were fronts for the anti-gun democratic groups pushing them as I discovered when my niece was approached to join in a protest after the shooting at her school. I told them to get lost, she needed to heal with family and friends.

Aristotle the trees was also about the good old us of a. As Canadians they disliked the way that Americans always thought they were superior too them lol I agree with rush
Nature and Physics I know all about that. That who ended the wars again.. Canada!!! Btw that isn’t even what the lyrics are about you dope. Look it up. Neil said it wasn’t really about anything specific.
I grew up listening to classic rock, so this song's kinda played out to me. But I never get sick of listening to those drums. Neil Peart adds so much energy, urgency, and force to any track he plays on.
Neil when you see them live is all business while Getty and Alex are having fun showing off their incredible mastery of the instruments they play and do itwith a smile 😃
Harry why does everyone want working man the first rush album wasn’t really rush Neil wasn’t in the band yet and because of this the lyrics are very simple compared to the rest of Rush.
Don't know if anyone has already answered, but this song is from the album called Moving Pictures which was released in early 1981 - my junior year of high school. Yeah, I'm that old.
Seriously, if you want good rush you have to listen to their earlier albums. Anything before moving pictures is more “metal”. Sori had it right a few Rush videos ago when she was going to pick “ Natural science”. That is the song you should listen to.
My favorite part about this channel. The way Vin looks at the camera when Sori goes off on some tangent like Edith Bunker. The things she brings up to relate to a song. Just mind boggling. 🤘👽🤘
The original title of the song was called Louie The Warrior, lyrics by Pye Dubois, He worte for another Canadian band and friends of Rush Max Webster. The Drummer and lyricist for Rush Neil Peart did a little rewrite and it became Tom Sawyer. Yes the song is about the free spirit.
Please check out Limelight. It is one of their trademark songs. Also the bassist/singer Geddy Lee has described the lyrics to be perhaps the most personal for the writer, the drummer Neil Peart. There's also a great live version available, Limelight 1981 from Exit Stage Left.
God bless you guys. I saw the "Time Stand Still" reaction, and you've just done the "Tom Sawyer" reaction, so now it's time to go back to Hemispheres with the song "Circumstances". It has some cool time signatures and is quite different from much of the other music released by other groups in the mid to late 70's.
Guys, if you want to really experience Rush you should do YYZ. It's a song that really resonates with EVERYONE, not just those who love rush. Like Tom Sawyer it's the song that should be played to everyone who are just getting introduced to Rush. Circumstances is a good song but I wouldn't play it for you for instance
I picked "Circumstances" because of it providing a different style of Rush from their storytelling years. Yeah, I can see the case for 2112 or "Natural Science" and "Jacob's Ladder from Permanent Waves. I had considered "The Trees" but it's a wildly popular song among us Rushians. But even as popular as it is "Passage To Bangkok" would work, too.
Brios, I know you did not mean that. There is no 'worst song' on a Rush album. Many of us diehard fans LOVE "Circumstances". The more that things change, the more they stay the same.
This was barely in the 80s being released in 81 but it’s just awesome vintage Rush. This is one band that was just constantly awesome. Great work on the reaction video series too. Keep em comin.
8:13 "This is why I don't listen to Country..." I hear you Vin, I'm a metal head, most everything I listen to is metal, hard rock, or classic rock. But there are exceptions...Jason Isbell is a fantastic songwriter, he's Americana/Country, had a #1 Billboard Country album in 2015 for Something More Than Free. I've mentioned it several times, but you and Sori need to watch the Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - If We Were Vampires live from the Jimmy Kimmel show. Just a fantastic song. Don't even need a reaction to it, just go watch it :)
The M-16 was made by Colt Firearms in Hartford, Ct. in 1969 when I had mine issued to me. We did call them Mattel's because of all the plastic they were made of, and because of how light they were, but they were not made by Mattel.
The truth of the matter is that no matter if any President does a good job, you would never know it because the opposing side would do everything they could do to tear it down. We are the only losers here.
I absolutely love your videos, but I can't always watch them all the way through. Is there any way you can shorten them just a touch? Even to 20 minutes? Thanks y'all again, love your videos!
Hey guys!! So I'm 39. I've been to many many MANY concerts in my day. Everyone from Sevendust to Tori Amos, Cannibal Corpse to Herbie Hancock, Ghostface Killa to Vanilla Ice, AC/DC to Tim McGraw, Metallica, Pantera, Meshuggah, Ice Cube, Sarah McLachlan, Bruno Mars, Meg Meyes, Slayer, Lamb Of God, etc. etc. Rush is HANDS DOWN, far and away the best live band I've ever seen... Their concerts are fucking AMAZING!!! For a three piece band, those boys make a lot of noise!! The bassist/vocalist/keyboardist, Geddy Lee, plays bass, keys and sings ALL AT THE SAME TIME LIVE!!! Also, I heard you guys mention lyrics... Funny thing, most of their lyrics are written by their drummer, Neil Peart!! If you guys are ever looking for an AMAZING music documentary to watch.... Get "Rush : Beyond the Lighted Stage". It's so well done, and so in depth, but in a really cool and innovative way... Not in true (Mostly), boring documentary form... Keep up the good work guys!! You're Pal, Mr. M-Bag!!
Hey guys, I love your stuff, but when I hear the taken down of monuments, in my opinion, it’s no different then fascist burning books back in the day. You should really read the biography about general lee, he was a very interesting man. Lincoln wanted him to be General of the north, but he declined because he wanted to fight for his state, not against them, and by the way even though general Lee’s wife’s family owned slaved, general lee never owned slaves. He was a West Point grad and top of his class. he wasnt just fighting for slavery, but for the value of states rights which are still important to this day. I could go on and on and ramble, but anyway great job with the reactions and your breaking down of a song and it’s lyrics, it brings out good debates 🤘🤘
I won´t get into the politics or life of general Lee, simply because discussions get bogged down in such useless talk. What we really are advocating here is the destruction of historical monuments and pieces of art. When you get down to the principle of it, it really has fascistic overtones. Destroying art and history because it does not comply with your modern sensibilities is disgusting and fascistic. I would looove to get into the ring with Vin on that one.
Rush is a great band. Good lyrics and music together. Similarly, Savatage - St. Patrick has very good lyrics about mankind's dialogue with his maker. Please react
When it comes to Rush, you're probably more likely to enjoy pre-1986 Rush, which includes every album from the first LP all the way up to Grace Under Pressure. Everything after that is a deep departure from classic Rush.
They wouldn't exist because the inspiration of that song was Lee's mom's experience in a concentration camp. I'm guessing the commentor meant if she hadn't survived that, there would be no Rush.
Check out these songs: Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust NOFX - Generation Z and You Will Lose Faith Avenged Sevenfold - Demons, Tension and Until the End Stick to Your Guns - Amber, Better Ash than Dust, the Better Days Before Me and 3 Feet from Peace
Good to see Rush growing on you guys. I didn't even know it was possible to not like Rush until you guys reacted to them. Andrew Jackson Jihad - Big Bird Carcass - A Congealed Clot Of Blood Corrosion Of Conformity - Clean My Wounds Green Carnation - Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness
I have been to four Rush concerts and the cool thing about this song is that during the part where he sings "Today's Tom Sawyer he gets high on you" and "Exit the warrior today's Tom Sawyer" Getty Lee is playing that single bass note, playing keyboard with his other hand, using a bass pedal on the keyboard (essentially there are TWO bass instruments going on at once) and singing all at the same time. He is doing vocals and playing three different instruments at once.
I've been listening to this song since it first came out. In fact, it was this song that got me into listening to RUSH, and RUSH ultimately becoming my favorite group for a couple of decades. I must have heard this song a 100 times, but while listening to your conversation, something popped into my head. I've always felt like the verse(s): The world is, The world is Love and Life are Deep Meant just what you said. The world is made up of life and love, and that's deep. But it just occurred to me that they may be referring to something more like what's taught in meditation: The world IS. Is simply exists... it is what it is. On the other hand... Love and Life are deep. A call to not make things unnecessarily complicated... which encompasses the way that Tom Sawyer lived... the drifted down the river, taking each day as it came and just making the best of it... the world was simple and he just lived in whatever it was. However, there is an acknowledgement of the complexity of how we can define and try to manage and control things, how we model our life, how we attempt to understand love. Just a thought... but I think I like it... adds another layer of depth to an already awesome set of lyrics.
In the December 1985 Rush Backstage Club newsletter, drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said: "Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be - namely me I guess."
Joe Hogan - That's precisely why I thought 2112 would be a good idea; a theme album where the entire Side A is a single story, in which the musicianship and lyrical brilliance are sure to be appreciated.
I really enjoy your unconventional, unfazed approach. Subscribed! You should try out "Red Barchetta" from the same album. It is very interesting, both musically and lyrically.
A great, classic song! Glad you really enjoyed it. However, your analysis was slightly off on the Tom Sawyer aspect. Mark Twain wrote two novels with these characters, the first being Tom Sawyer and the second being Huckleberry Finn. "N" Jim was in the second book, Huckleberry Finn. He and Huck Finn went on the run together. It wasn't Tom Sawyer, that was a totally different story involving Tom and Huck being lost in a cave with Becky Thatcher, and everyone thinking they were dead. However both boys were rebels. As for other great Rush songs, listen to The Spirit of Radio, or Subdivisions, or Between the Wheels. DON'T listen to Natural Science, you won't like it.
@@Bucketbothead007 Because there are way better Rush songs than Natural Science for them to react to. I've been a Rush fan since the Seventies and Natural Science is one of the few songs by one of my favorite groups that I don't like. I want them to react to the best of Rush not the worst.
J. Jennings I've been a fan since Rush first came on the scene too. So what if you feel there are way better songs than Natural Science & it's one song by them you don't like. It's your opinion & that's it, your opinion. I respect your opinion, but you're not the Supreme Decider of what's the best of Rush & what's the worst of Rush. You're one dude in a sea of millions of Rush fans, that's all you are, plain & simple. Rush's best work is from '75-'84 imo. The debut is alright, but there's a big step up in quality with Fly By Night. They're a band that went through several different phases, & that 9 year stretch is their best music imo. The lesser works are from '85-'91 (Power Windows up to & including Roll The Bones). I don't really like Test For Echo that much either, everything after that is enjoyable to some degree for me. I can think of many Rush songs that are not as good as Natural Science to me, a lot of songs from '85-'91, & '96. Some more songs in later years too. But, that's just my opinion.
You are absolutely correct. It IS my opinion that Natural Science is not one of Rush's better songs. It IS my opinion that they should listen to other Rush songs, not Natural Science. Not every Rush song is a classic. There is not a single musical group in the entire world that has created a perfect catalog of songs, not even Rush. The thing is, my opinion is not more important than your opinion and your opinion is not more important than mine. I was giving them my opinion and my opinion is not wrong, and neither is your opinion wrong. They are simply differing opinions, that is all.
J. Jennings I respect your opinion, & I appreciate you sharing it. Your opinion is certainly true for you, you've made that quite clear, & mine is true for me, but they may not be true for some others, that's why they're called opinions. We don't speak for all Rush fans. Opinions are meant to be accepted, or rejected, although some people may also be indifferent to certain opinions as well. Some agree, some don't, that's just how it goes. When you share an opinion, that's what happens. You said that you've been a long-time Rush fan, & they're one of your favorite bands, & that Natural Science is the worst of Rush. Nothing personal here, I just don't agree with your opinion, that's all. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a harmless disagreement. I think Natural Science deserves to be recognized as one of Rush's best songs, & I just thought I'd tell you that, since you made what came across as a matter-if-fact statement about it being the worst. Your statement is actually a nonfact-based statement. It may be a fact that you think it's the worst of Rush, but it's not a fact that all Rush fans feel exactly the same way as you do about that song. That was my whole point.
Greetings from Brasil! In my country, this "Tom Sawyer" was used to open the MacGyver series (here called "Profession: Danger") in the 1980s! From Rush I also recommend the live videos of "Red Barchetta", and"Xanadu" from the show" Exit: Stage Left "!
I recently saw this song introducing Jordan B Peterson to a speaking event. I'd always liked this song, but the combination put it into a very interesting perspective.
@ Dennis Cooke: The irony of you asking it is in him being such a BS that many people are like you - seem confused when others tell them that he is a BS. In other words: he BS-ed you too, that's how. Or, alternativelly: you know he is a BS-er, but you want to play innocent here to BS more people by pulling them into a conversation.
I'm glad you guys appreciate this! I hold Rush very close to my heart! I will also say there's 40 years of back catalogue to check out here! Btw the Lyricist is the drummer Neil Peart! Also an author lovingly called The Professor!
I know this is old but the metaphor applies. this song was my entry to the "heavy metal" prior I had my famlies(dad's) Elvis(and clones) choices. I fell for Rushand Pink Floyd. This led to many later bands (Marilyn and Tool) that opened many a door. I appreciate y'alls sight into these songs. Have fun.

RUSH is only three guys and they pull off all of their songs perfectly live. You should check out Spirit Of Radio.
started watching, had to grab my bass, start over and do a bit of a play along. i remember when i really got into rush, they really took my bass playing to the next level
"Tom Sawyer" is a metaphor for the United States of America.
Michael Von Drake Neil wrote another song about the US. Beneath, Between, Behind. I don’t know what his obsession was, but it wrote great music
Aristotle the trees was also about the good old us of a. As Canadians they disliked the way that Americans always thought they were superior too them lol I agree with rush
Wrong.. "His mind is not for rent"? About America? "Not Arrogant"? America? Nope, so many lyrics don't fit that interpretation.
Phil Holt we are superior to you. Who ended every major World War, keeping you safe. Not Canada. How would you like to be on a border with China????
Nature and Physics I know all about that. That who ended the wars again.. Canada!!! Btw that isn’t even what the lyrics are about you dope. Look it up. Neil said it wasn’t really about anything specific.
I grew up listening to classic rock, so this song's kinda played out to me. But I never get sick of listening to those drums. Neil Peart adds so much energy, urgency, and force to any track he plays on.
Neil when you see them live is all business while Getty and Alex are having fun showing off their incredible mastery of the instruments they play and do itwith a smile 😃
Now please do WORKING MAN and LIMELIGHT PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Harry why does everyone want working man the first rush album wasn’t really rush Neil wasn’t in the band yet and because of this the lyrics are very simple compared to the rest of Rush.
Good suggestion
@@beckysherly8872 Because that riff is that awesome.
The working man solo is flawless imo
Only if it's the "All The World's A Stage" version.
I'm so glad you both liked this song. It shows a little more of their depth. May I suggest xyz live next. No lyrics.
Luv you guys. Thnks
I was never a huge Rush fan, but Tom Sawyer is a badass song.
I love watching people hear real music for the first time
I love this song and this was one of my favorite breakdowns you guys have ever done. Bravo! (Soilwork - Drowning with Silence)
I wouldn't say Circumstaces is a bad song, but it's far from Rush best. And it's the worst song on Hemispheres.
Band Name: Uriah Heep , Song: July Morning, here's the link. ua-cam.com/video/grSWdLdp7po/v-deo.html Seriously a beautiful song.
Aaaaactually, the M-16 was made by Colt, Mattel only made the handgrip :-)
yup, I was like WTF are you talking about vin, and i looked it up to be sure.
The drummer Neil Pearl wrote all the lyrics and the bassist and guitarist wrote the music. Neil’s lyrics are very deep.
Rush - Subdivisions
Flying through reading comments and hit this gem. Nicely put.
It's all about party agenda, they could care less about whether or not something helps us...only if it helps further their side.
I absolutely love your videos, but I can't always watch them all the way through. Is there any way you can shorten them just a touch? Even to 20 minutes? Thanks y'all again, love your videos!
For another Rush song I KNOW you'll love is the instrumental YYZ. Listen to either the studio version or the Live in Rio version. Both are amazing!
Rush had so many great songs. Epic and intricate. Geddy was a true original.
Lyric wise Rush's Witch Hunt would be your cup of tea!
Music-wise too
Hey guys!!
You're Pal,
Mr. M-Bag!!
After forever- Black Sabbath!!!
One of the greatest bands of all-time. R.I.P. Professor, sorely missed.
Yes!
No other country that I know of has statuary devoted to the losing side of a war.
Vin that was a very insightful analysis. Keep up the good work.
Rush is a great band. Good lyrics and music together. Similarly, Savatage - St. Patrick has very good lyrics about mankind's dialogue with his maker. Please react
Came here for the song ( Rush Rocks! \m/)... but stayed for the discussion afterward... you guys are great! =)
So many good Rush songs, By-Tor and The Snow Dog, Tears, Xanadu.
My favorites are Anthem, Working Man, and a couple songs off Counterparts that I can't recall the titles of at the moment.
When it comes to Rush, you're probably more likely to enjoy pre-1986 Rush, which includes every album from the first LP all the way up to Grace Under Pressure. Everything after that is a deep departure from classic Rush.
I have a lot of favorite Rush songs, but without "Red Sector A" Rush wouldn't existed. That is the song written by Neal, about Lees parents.
What??? Dude Red Sector came out in the 80s. Smh
They wouldn't exist because the inspiration of that song was Lee's mom's experience in a concentration camp. I'm guessing the commentor meant if she hadn't survived that, there would be no Rush.
Check out these songs:
Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust
NOFX - Generation Z and You Will Lose Faith
Avenged Sevenfold - Demons, Tension and Until the End
Stick to Your Guns - Amber, Better Ash than Dust, the Better Days Before Me and 3 Feet from Peace
Epica - consign to oblivion live at the zenith please
Good to see Rush growing on you guys. I didn't even know it was possible to not like Rush until you guys reacted to them.
Andrew Jackson Jihad - Big Bird
Carcass - A Congealed Clot Of Blood
Corrosion Of Conformity - Clean My Wounds
Green Carnation - Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness
Rush forever! Detroit Rock city representin.
Right next to you - class of 82!
Bout time to have RUSh some respect! These guys are world class! Try Spirit if the Radio!
So happy you did another Rush song. I second the Circumstances reaction.
Scar Symmetry - The Illusionist
Deviate from the Form would be a better introduction to Scar. The solos are fucking amazing
I've been listening to this song since it first came out. In fact, it was this song that got me into listening to RUSH, and RUSH ultimately becoming my favorite group for a couple of decades.
I must have heard this song a 100 times, but while listening to your conversation, something popped into my head. I've always felt like the verse(s):
The world is, The world is
Love and Life are Deep
Meant just what you said. The world is made up of life and love, and that's deep.
But it just occurred to me that they may be referring to something more like what's taught in meditation:
The world IS.
Megalomania by Black Sabbath please
Yes!
One of the greatest Sabbath songs in my opinion.
Awesome song, great choice. \,,/_(-,-)_\,,/
Amazing song.
Perfect selection - Sabbath's magnum opus.
Or the much heavier remake by Venom
"Tom Sawyer" is a song by Canadian rock band Rush, originally released on their 1981 album Moving Pictures
Carcass - Heartwork
No ThanX.
Glad you found a Rush song you like. :)
Holy Crap! Seriously?! 🔥😲
Candlemass - Solitude
FYI - It was just the handgrips that were made by Mattel rest is Colt
You should check out Natural Sciences or Which Hunt.
Definitely
People say: "have an open mind, but in reality they're saying agree with me." Love this!
I live stream album review would be great - RUSH 2112 would be a treat.
Rush is 1 for 3 with these guys that I have seen. Let's find a few more songs for them to enjoy before suggesting they listen to a whole album maybe?
If they don't like a song, so what.
React to Epica - consign to oblivion live at the zenith
1981 indeed. My older brothers had this album Moving Pictures.Loved it at 9 love it at 49!
I recently saw this song introducing Jordan B Peterson to a speaking event. I'd always liked this song, but the combination put it into a very interesting perspective.
Dr. Peterson is the man.
But also and foremost he's a quack and bullshitter.
@@ThomasShatter how is he a quack or a bullshitter?
@ Dennis Cooke: The irony of you asking it is in him being such a BS that many people are like you - seem confused when others tell them that he is a BS. In other words: he BS-ed you too, that's how.
Or, alternativelly: you know he is a BS-er, but you want to play innocent here to BS more people by pulling them into a conversation.
Leeloo Minai By speaking like that all you serve to do is make him listen to Peterson more.
I'm glad you guys appreciate this! I hold Rush very close to my heart! I will also say there's 40 years of back catalogue to check out here! Btw the Lyricist is the drummer Neil Peart! Also an author lovingly called The Professor!
Amen by Sepultura
I know this is old but the metaphor applies. this song was my entry to the "heavy metal" prior I had my famlies(dad's) Elvis(and clones) choices. I fell for Rushand Pink Floyd. This led to many later bands (Marilyn and Tool) that opened many a door. I appreciate y'alls sight into these songs. Have fun.
