Same! Being a 90's kid was truly awesome, I feel like that was the last great decade in America when it peaked and then slowly went downhill from there. Now in 2020's it's the worst! Might as well not even be America anymore there's barely anything American about it :(
+Comical This trailer is not bad. Not all older trailers are bad. Take Alien, it has the best trailer ever made. Total Recall the movie is not bad, but not great either.
Trailers still and always had spoilers! They still have them today such as what happened with the Terminator Genisys trailer. There's only a handful of trailers that come to mind that contain little spoilers such as the Matrix, etc. This was probably an awesome trailer for the time. It makes me want to see it again myself! I have heard it was rushed or something but it still is preety cool!
How... How was this movie so fucking good? I just watched it again as a 33 year old. I’ve seen it a few times but THIS time I actually paid attention to the story, the characters, writing etc. This movie had absolutely NO business and I mean NONE being that fucking good. This just jumped past a lot of sci-fi films to become one of my top 5 favorites in the genre. This was magnificent!
It's based on the Phillip K Dick story "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale". They did over 40 rewrites to get the story right. I recommend the other two good Phillip K Dick adaptations "Minority Report" & "A Scanner Darkly". The former has Tom Cruise as a policeman arresting citizens forecast to be future murderers. The latter is a 2006 film with Keanu Reeves as a Drug Enforcement Agent investigating himself, Robert Downey Jr. & Woody Haroldson to stop production of Substance D in what is an eerie anticipation of the criminally induced Opioid crisis. You'll understand if you see that film's ending.
It's smart with a ton of twists, but it assumes the audience is intelligent and will keep up, so it never gets bogged down with exposition. It's an unapologetically sleazy and balls to the wall violent exploitation film but has excellent structure and clever dialogue. Also, the special effects are great for 1990 and they still hold up today.

To anyone looking at the comments, and thinking "oh so it will spoil the movie so won't watch it tonight" i watched it for the first time right after watching this and it didn't spoil it at all. Few scenes were less of a surprise but the plot worked just as well. If you don't know what detail to pay attention to you won't put it together.
Unless you have a really good vision in your mind of what to do in those scenes. I can imagine what I want in the scene and see if I can do it without using CGI.
Practical effects generally look better than digital effects imo. There are exceptions, but I'd much rather watch a movie knowing that when it was filmed the actors were actually interacting with things and not just standing in a room coated in green.
Total Recall was a true Classic and movie art, Jerry Goldsmiths outstanding music score and amazing special effects 🙂. Arnold was amazing in this movie and Paul Verhoevens master directing 🙂. This is one of my favorite Arnold movies and Verhoeven movies . I watched it on Netflix and i can’t believe i havn’t seen it until 2 years ago and i never regretted it 🙂
This trailer is way better, then remake :D I remember watching original movie back then... It was a total mind blow... And i still love to watch it from time to time... Verhoven is one of the most iconic directors of all time:)
I watched both movies, the new one is not bad and pretty fun to watch, but it's not on the same level of the old one. The 1990 total recall is a classic. But I don't agree with people that say the new one is total trash, It's really not a bad movie, if you don't compare it with the old one, it much better than most of the movies made in 2012.
I am not going to bash the new one since I haven't watched it, but this movie is just awesome, and dare I say, perfect. Mind games, Mars colony, triple boobs, and plenty of action. This is the kind of movie that defined my early teenage years back in the 90s. This and T2....
Wow man, Paul Verhoeven really made some of the best movies! Including: - Basic Instinct - RoboCop - Starship Troopers (his best movie imho) - Total Recall
You should definitely check out his early dutch films. "Turkish Delight", "Soldier of Orange", Spetters", "The Fourth Man"... a definite underrated genius filmmaker of all time!
Love that great character actor Michael Ironsides as Richter. 2 bad Roy Brocksmith as Dr. Edgemar passed away at age 56 from diabetes in 2001. He was a great comical actor as well.
+TheHorsenation +moakley it's not, someone took the teaser trailer and the theatrical trailer and put them together with additional scenes from the movie
1st time seen in theatres, before the movie you paid to see, and not able to rewatch 100000 times on your phone, which was attached to the kitchen wall back then......shocker! didn't really Spoil much. ugh.....
It is the year it brought Tiny Toon Adventures. TMNT live action movie. Before Sonic was created. Paul Verhoeven made the best sci fi thrilling movie of the decade. What a classic.
I finished watching this today and I laughed more at the humor in this movie than Thor: Love and Thunder. And, this movie was released before I was born and I enjoyed it.
Just saw the movie again today, and... it is just amazing how awesome it still is, like... so many new movies coming out can't even match it in story, action, props, all of it. Where the hell did proper movie magic vanish to? I am gonna have a marathon of 80's and 90's movies the time ahead, it is all just so much more entertaining than most crap these days.
A very good movie that has a real plot, interesting characters, plot twists and some real thrills. So much better than Schwarzenegger's usual "brainless biceps" movies that spend too much time on Arnold's lack of acting ability. Also great music by Jerry Goldsmith.
This movie actually blew my mind... i did not even watch any part of the remake, since they literally had nowhere to go but down with any attempt at a remake of this true mind-bender movie. In 1990 was almost to sci-fi what "star wars" was in 1977; consider it used no green screen and almost no CGI cheats. One astonishing scene after another, and in a rare year with a whole lot of great movies (1990) this was at least in the top 5. Fantastic, diabolically clever movie in the view of somebody, namely me, that's almost totally jaded on movies in general.
.Schwarzenegger's best movie! or at least in my humble opinion. it's lots of violent action, beautiful women, visual effects, James Bond action sequences, plot twists.
I still don't get it, does Dough (Arnold) have a dream about being a secret agent, or is he really that agent whose memory is erased according to the movie?
I like to think it was real, because it's kind of sad if you go the dream route. he was just a normal quiet dude who wanted to go to Mars and ended up getting a lobotomy if it was a dream. but he's just a normal dude who gets turned into a badass if it's real lol
Many people here are saying “for that year the special effects were really good”. Bullshit! They were literally the very best they’ve ever been. Soon thereafter, Hollywood shifted to full on CGI. Don’t get me wrong. GCI is good when used to improve things, not make them from scratch. Any movie with over-reliance on CGI ages like milk. The rebooted Planet of the Apes, just based on the look of the apes is a Jurassic Park-esque family movie, it’s hardly older than half a decade, and already looks poorly conceived. Whereas the old one, almost half a century old, still creeps me out, and the script doesn’t offend what little intelligence I have. Heck, no need to bring other moves into this, just look at the rebooted Total Recall. Try saying that the effects match the ones in the older version.
The cast of "Goodfellas" got drunk and accidently walked onto the set of "2001 Space Odyssey," and was given the film-script for "Airplane". Watching "Total Recall" twenty-six years later, I am lmao. Over the top!
My favourite Arnold Films 1982- Conan the Barbarian 1984- The Terminator 1985- Commando 1987- the Running Man 1987- Predator 1988- Twins 1990- Total Recall 1990- Kindergarten Cop 1991- Terminator 2 1994- True Lies 1996- Eraser

This movie was truly phenomenal!!!!!! I miss the nineties so much!

for a movie that was made in 1990, the special effects were really good, i always liked this movie

I actually find the special effects from the 90's better than nowadays! The CGI effects weren't so much apparent so to speak.

It was based on a Piers Anthony book. He was way ahead of his time.
