🇱🇧BREAD: Roll the dough into balls. Flatten and place in the tandoor oven to bake.
🇱🇧MANCHI MALFOUF (Stuffed Cabbage): Boil the cabbage head, peel the leaves, and mix parsley, mint, and grated tomatoes in a pan. Soak the rice and add it to the mixture after mashing the garlic. 🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

Amazing video Sonny, you have a big heart my brother. I hope you see this comment or one of your team members share it with you - I love you my brother 🤍
It was an honor to be part of such an important video. I've been involved in the Syrian refugee crisis since a young teen, visiting camps and helping as much as I could with education, food banks, etc... I really hope this issue gets solved in the near future, as it is an important one. Syrians are full of potential, and their culture is extremely rich in every possible way. Glad Sonny and his team decided to shed light on the food aspect of it 🙌🏼.

I agree, I love this channel BECAUSE it touches on other aspects and not just food and how everything relates to one another. Food is one of many aspects of life and showing the full picture like Sonny does is brilliant and appreciated. Also, I used to watch other channels, trying not to mention names, and they just focused on the food which was not as interesting to watch anymore. @@anasevi9456 Syria is still divided between four different factions, as the civil war never came into an actual end, despite it being halted in most places since 2020. The country also suffers from heavy economical sanctions.

@@anasevi9456A better question might be: why hasn't the West done more to help Syrians stranded in refugee camps? After all, by Invading Iraq we turbo charged the Islamist extremists that these people are fleeing from. My family is Slovak. We make cabbage rolls but our recipe is slightly different. It's amazing how recipes change across the world. I pray for Syria and tgat the people can get their homeland back. There's no winners in war, only death and destruction.
Yeah, a common dish in Eastern Europe. Analogy to a grape leaf rolls in South Europe and Middle East.
We also have a version here in Norway, but a bit simpler. Think it was inspired by a turkish version during 1700 after a swedish king loved it and brought it back. Then it spread through Norway and Sweden
YES Tolma in Caucasus but is many variation best is not cabbage vine leaves with yogurt it is fantastic
In Germany as well
Cabbage rolls are very traditional food in most slav and nordic countries. In Finland it is traditional food.
I'm not Syrian but my God I feelnfor these people. I just feel like crying hearing about their story and seeing the way they live. Thank you so much for going there and sharing their culture and food with us , much love ❤
It’s because you are an angel
I had the privilege of traveling to Syria before the war, I was one of very few Americans without a family connection to travel there. The food there was absolutely incredible, some of the most delicious flavors I've ever tried. The people were also all incredibly friendly and welcoming, and excited to show us their incredible history.
Two stories stick out. One was a guy who saw my family walking and called out, "Americans! We love Americans! We don't like your government, but we love Americans!" Same buddy.
Another was I was trying to find a place I could buy some water. I speak no Arabic, so I walked up to some guy on the street and tried to hand signal wanting to buy some water and he just handed me the bottle he had.
What wonderful people. I hope I can go back one day.
U can easily say the same about palestinians... But ur government decided to make of them terrorists..

The difference is Bosnians aren't in mental slavery. They choose to move on and improve their lives, saying no to extremists using them for profit.
I am impressed how Sonny can manage to bring important political, economic, social topics into his food videos without being forceful about it.
And is able to make people conscious about things they try not to think about, to think about them.
This sets him apart for a most of other UA-camrs, and especially food vloggers who really just care about food normally.
He does it in a really great way. He deserved any of the 10 million followers he has, and I wish him more.
If he continues doing videos like this, his reach cant be big enough
(Which is maybe the only way to make especially people from his home country care about these things, Europe takes most of the burdens of those problems.. Not exactly the countries who caused them in the first place)
Nobody can fill the shoes of the late Anthony Burdain, but Sonny does come damn close. Great great work!!!!!
@@steffibluemel5082 So true its good that there's someone continuing Bourdain's legacy
I agree that the US bears a significant portion of the blame here but Europe's hands aren't exactly clean either. It was the UK and France who came up with the Sykes-Picot agreement that carved up the middle east after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Also Lebanon was a French colony for a time.
@@GC-ps9mn But the middle east situation we have nowadays, are joint "efforts" of UK and USA, trough their interventions in first Iran, then later Iraq Afghanistan and other countries. All those countries were doing well in the 50, no dictators and extremists inside.
Then Mohammad Mossadegh said, our oil is more important for my country and citizens, because I have to care for them first. The USA didnt like that, and this started a whole series of interventions. Even then, it was about gold and other ressources, nothing had to to with "helping" anyone.
That part of the world has had influx of wars since Persian empires.
As a syrian, this video made me cry. I was born in the United States but moved to Aleppo, Syria when I was 1 and lived there until 2012 just as the civil war got worse. I worked in North Lebanon. Despite all the hardships these families have to go through, I have been always amazed and delighted by their resilience and never-fading spirit. That food looks unbelievabley delicious WOW.. such a testament that even in the most unforgiving places, food culture endures and history survives ❤
Food is comfort, it’s home, it’s family, friends and the soul of so many.
A lot of people forget that it’s not just about sustenance and survival of our physical body, but also about our emotional and spiritual selves.
Food is one of the easiest ways to feel even one bit of normalcy amongst chaos and despair.
Sharing loved foods and cultural or traditional meals is literally the easiest way to show you care, to teach someone about your people, your struggle and to bring people together. It’s something that everyone, everywhere has in common.
The quickest and easiest way to trigger the parts of the brain that control nostalgia, comfort, security and feeling at ease are all effected when we share food/meals with others. We hear the food as it’s being prepared and that triggers happy memories of childhood, smelling the foods releases endorphins, tasting the food starts adrenaline flowing.
It’s so much more than just survival and this channel highlights that perfectly.
This felt like a very special video and unique insight into the life of these folks, and it didn't feel pandering or emotionally manipulative, just shared a small piece of life of some incredibly strong people. Thank you for this video, I hope something good comes from this for all of the refugees living in that camp.

Seeing the kids literally breaks my heart and makes me wanna cry. Overall great video and thanks for sharing it!
I think is probably the best episode of this channel. Very informative as well as respectful of the stories of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Thanks for your hard work.
Food always makes it easier for me to understand a person, their struggles, and their culture better than words could ever do.
I've never had one of his videos make me cry. But when they were talking about caring for their kids so much they were trying to send them abroad, I lost it. 😭
Sonny, just you showing this side of the way people are living is a blessing in itself. I’m sure the people were not offended if you didn’t bring anything when arriving. Love what you do bro!
I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for sharing the video about the people who lost their lives and homes. It was a stark reminder of the immense challenges they faced and the difficult journey they had to endure.
It is disheartening to see that the world seems to have forgotten about them, as if their existence has been erased. These individuals deserve our empathy and support during these trying times. It is crucial that we come together as a community to lend a helping hand to those in need, especially when they have lost everything. Greatings From Iraq.
Right in the feels. Its not often you watch a cooking show that feels like its shining a light on the living conditions and plight of a struggling people. At the same time, its wonderful seeing people come together to make the best of what they have, and that shines through in their cooking. How they cant/arent allowed to work jobs that elevate themselves out of their living situation, so instead they work tirelessly to farm what little they can and provide food for their families. May the divine uplift these people and find them opportunity.
Thanks for shining a light on these experiences through food and educating us more about the lives of other people.
Good for you bro, I applaud that move, not many people would be willing to go in these places, every person has a story and not many around the world want to hear these people's story
I don’t think saying most people don’t want to hear their stories is accurate. I think that “ignorance is bliss” applies, but not because they don’t want to know…it’s because they feel helpless when they do know.
I don’t know if you understand what I mean…what I’m trying to say….but I’m not very eloquent when it comes to expressing myself in short form.

Thank you for shedding light about such important topics and sharing with the world the struggles of eastern countries especially Lebanon. The videos u made here are incredible!
ما اجملنا نحن الشعب السوري حتى ونحن بأسوء الضروف الابتسامة لاتفارق الوجوه وكرماء مع الضيف قدر المستطاع.
This video deserves an award. I will someday give you one. Good job sonny. Breaking boundaries and showing us a true representation of these camps.
You’re doing such great work as a UA-camr, but more as a documentarian, and very much in the spirit of Anthony Bourdain. Also, the editing and audio are always on point. Congratulations, and thank you for what you are doing, Sonny.
Such a good episode. You are educating the world.
I am so sorry for the children who grow up in this situation. I hope the situation will get better for them and the children could live in a place where they can having a dream to achieve
It's different just hearing about the situation and seeing the situation. You have definitely given the people and their families a voice to tell everyone watching their story. Thanks for doing this.
14:11 she have money to *smoke cigarettes* 🚬😂😂👍 nice
Thank you Sonny and crew for making this video. I had no idea the extent of the Syrian's situation. It broke my heart. My prayers 🙏 go out to them and may God bless them ten fold.
14:11 she have money to *smoke cigarettes* 🚬😂😂👍 nice
Thank you for showing our culture, our struggle, and incredible food ❤
From Anthony Bourdain, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern now Best Food Ever. Sunny and his team has set the bar high once again. Well done 👏 👏 👏 👍
Totally blown over with this vlog. I have never known or seen this part of Syria. Looked more like a documentary with showed how people are still strong no matter what. Thanks for sharing this Sonny.
Sonny, bro, you‘re a legend. Much much love from all the syrian people❤
journalisim meets food!, Such a great way to veiw the many world issues whiel breaking down cultural barriers Bravo!
I just wish that nobody had to suffer, I don't care what your race is, your background, where you came from, I just wish everyone had enough. Thank you Sonny.
We all could. If we could stand up to the world's oppressors. Eat the rich, always eat the rich.
Thank you Sonny and Rob for bringing us this story!! Appreciate you sharing then links on how we can contribute
one of Sonnys best episodes so far. I never knew i could cry to a food show. Thank you Sonny for this
Hello, I hope you can deliver my message to them from India. My grandparents were refugees during the Indian Partition. The scenes were very, very similar. They lived in refugee camps, borrowed money, started businesses and built a city out of that camp. My grandfather built a mansion before he died. Today, thanks to him, I have a great life. This will work out for these ppl. They will end up getting rich and their children will live in a better, more prosperous world.
well said....i really hope things get better for them too and the conditions get better and better and they'd have a better life
Your channel is exactly like the name implies, truly the best ever food review show on UA-cam HANDS DOWN. Even by TV show standards, this is seriously HIGH level stuff, the way you tackle the subject of the human condition so enthusiastically, and never back down fromthe most exotic foods in the world, dare I say your show is on par with Anthony Bourdain’s.
This is where this UA-cam channel became a show. The cinematic aspect was very different. I guess, it hits hard because they're war survivors. Sonny's camera crew did an outstanding job, and Sonny as a narrator is always the best. UA-cam should make BEFRS the official food channel of UA-cam.
An extremely heart wrenching situation, and also heartwarming to see you guys visiting and providing those families with some money and food. I can not immagine the difficulties that they face day to day. Everyone in the US better consider yourself extremely blessed.
This brings back tears and ALOT of PTSD. The innocent children are so beautiful!
7:50 cabbage rolls are popular in the entire region and as far up north as Eastern Europe. You'll get them in the entire levant, in Persia, in central asia, and even in countries like Ukraine, Russia, Bulgaria etc. They may vary a little. One place will have them with tomatos, another with dairy, in the Middle East they are most often done simply with water or broth, seasoned with lemon or eaten with some fresh yogurt. Cabbage rolls are one food I can never stop eating once I've started, they are like drugs.
Hey Sonny! You are no longer just a food reviewer, you are making people aware of others' cultures, prospers, miseries, and everything in between! You are helping people around the world to connect to each other and touch their humanity sides!
Thank you and your team a lot for all your effort!
I’m Dominican and we do the stuffed cabbage too. We call it “niños envuelto”. We make it with rice and ground beef.
Thank you so much for continuing the work of Anthony Bourdain, if not intentionally then at least in spirit.
Your video was incredibly touching. Your compassion and dedication to shedding light on such an important issue make you a true example of a good human being. Thank you for creating awareness and inspire positive change. You're making a meaningful impact, and it's truly commendable. Keep up the fantastic work ❤❤❤
This makes me cry..... Sonny, thank you for giving them a chance, for lending them a voice, to be heard, to not be forgotten.
Today I felt bad for having all that I need for life. It breaks my heart to see many struggling in this world where there is so much to help. Happy to see many of these people every day put a smile on and continue with the life they have.
As a Syrian this episode was the most difficult to watch. Thanks Sonny for spotting some light on these oppressed people.
